I have been in the shop several times. All the guys in there are helpful. They have looked at some of my equipment and given recommendations, discussed various stretches of the local rivers. I have tried to buy some tackle from them, but I am mostly spin fishing and their gear is all fly fishing. I would definitely recommend them for a guided trip, to purchase tackle. read more

We went out with our guide, Reed, on the South River and had a great time. I couldn't imagine finding a nicer more knowledgeable person. This shop is great and I don't ordinarily compare business in my reviews but I must say I was very impressed with the atmosphere and service here. I was welcomed when I walk in and the staff was eager to assist me with anything I needed. Even if it meant just chatting about the fishing in the area. Now I am an owner of Orvis products and South River Fly Shop really shined after my experience with them was over. I walked into an Orvis store this past weekend I was actually looking at fishing equipment (instead of cloths and things) several employees standing around not a single one attempted to engage with me. I stopped by the shop on a dreary Monday half expecting it to be closed, but was pleasantly surprised to see them doing a steady business. I had questions about a creek I was targeting and the guy I talked to knew it intimately, and was more than willing to give me great guidance on where to park, where to fish and just as importantly, sections of the stream to skip entirely. I asked about flies and he showed me a few selection options, all of which fit into my preferred approach anyway, and their prices were better than what I find up in the DC area. The shop was fairly large, well stocked (man, they had a LOT of rods!), friendly and appeared well run. Would definitely stop in anytime I head down that way in the future. read more

This independent fly shop is first-rate in every sense. For novices like me, they make fly-fishing accessible and don't talk down to you. They genuinely want you to have a great experience fishing. Our guide Reid (spelling?) was outstanding. He and the staff gave us good gear in perfect condition for our trip. What I like about this shop is the fact that they have a wide selection of everything you need but they're not in a hurry. You can run in and out quickly or you can linger and get advice on the latest gear or fishing conditions.
