I've done business with Al since the late 1960's. Back in those days when I was a pauper, I'd buy recaps. For $50 you'd have basically four new tires. They would last for 10,000 miles. Now it's a little more expensive, but the service is good, and they don't beat you with heavy handed pricing. Some yelper's grouse that the service reps are unresponsive; not true. After Saturday's (1/9/21) horrible experience with Mavis Tire in Riverhead I visited Southampton Tire Center today. An unexpected surprise. Although I was told they were short two mechanics today my vehicle was serviced within the promised time. Very polite staff and the price was very reasonable compared to Mavis.They had a reputation in the past of being more expensive than other shops and the owner and wife were not the friendliest. They are still family run with a younger, much friendlier family member running the business. Will not hesitate to visit them again when I purchase my tires in the spring. Beware of the con! After getting my front brakes done here 8,000 miles ago, I brought my car in for a front ball joint replacement. I was surprisingly told I needed (gasp) $1,100 of service!! Knowing this to be about double what I should be paying I asked to see the work itemization and low & behold they had "New Front Brakes & Rotors". I explained they had just done my brakes only 8,000 miles ago and that they were fine. I heard a "That's impossible" as the old lady walked back to check the car. She came back dismissively saying that they did the back brakes, not the front, which was an absurd lie. I nicely told her I can show her their receipt for the front brakes & that I had JUST gotten the back brakes done 500 miles ago elsewhere. The old lady got flustered, realizing she had been caught, and then put on a sudden zealous cranky attitude & said "Well if you're not going to do ALL the things on the list, due to liability I won't do any work on your car." My jaw dropped with the continued absurdity as I had just used my one free AAA tow to have the car towed there. So basically the bottom line was: if they couldn't rip me off for brakes I didn't need, they wouldn't do the ball joint replacement at all. Not exactly the quality you look for in an auto repair center. I paid for a 2nd tow ($$) and got the work done at a shop a couple miles away and the entire bill was only $575. When I asked this mechanic about the front brakes he said they were in good condition, were only half worn, and the rotors weren't even close to needing replacement. Beware of the STC con! Since this happened I've caught wind of several other similar abusive incidents where STC insists on unnecessary repairs, and blurt out similar "it's their way or the highway" or "have to do it because of liability" BS. They probably didn't count on a bad Yelp review when they spewed their old-school ripoff terminology. Only positive thing is that they didn't hold my car hostage when I had a tow truck show up to have the car taken elsewhere. On a final note, the STC mechanic who I spoke to also had a rather doomsday attitude, truly "putting it on" to make my car seem worse than it was. I think his first lines were (shaking his head) "oh man, it's bad, it needs new everything". After 30 years of car owning I can smell BS when I see it and I was kind of surprised to see it here. I could tell in 30 seconds he was exaggerating the situation when his explanations to my questions weren't exactly viable ("you must have a bad brake caliper"), and immediately got a 2nd mechanic shop's opinion (see above) which was roughly half their estimate and brakes were reported as "good". I would give zero stars if I could. I recently brought my car to them with a tire bubble. They told me that my rim was bent as well. I told them that I have rim insurance. Since they do not take rim or tire insurance, I advised them that I would go through my dealership and to not do any work. I go to pick up the car and the rim and tire are off of my car and the donut is on it. I did not authorize this. When I question them they say that they could not re-seat the tire on the bent rim. OK, fine ... but I never authorized them to do anything!!! I am told that if I don't want to work through them that my key is in the car and the old rim and tire are in the trunk. So, the next day I bring the car to my dealership to have them fix it. When the dealership attempts to work on the car the original rim and tire are not in the trunk! I call the clowns at Southampton tire and the response was, "Yeah, we must've forgot to put it back." Considering the dealership is in Smithtown and my rim is in Southampton ... this was a huge inconvenience. When I went back to pick up my equipment all I got back was my rim ... the tire was off of the rim and gone. Granted, it needed to be replaced. But again, I did not authorize them to do anything. The customer service here is awful, the parking lot is a nightmare and the work is subpar (i had an alignment done by them on a separate visit that I had to have fixed by a competent mechanic). "Don't bother" complaining, they said. So glad they prance around with rubber gloves to protect their delicate hands. The owners are incredibly rude, especially the woman at the counter (Carol?) who replied to nearly all of my inquiries with snide remarks and condescending attitude. She took a call while helping me and was noticeably rude and condescending to that person as well. When she hung up she turned to an employee and said something along the lines of "they just get stupider and stupider." I should absolutely NOT hear the owner of a business call a potential customer stupid for asking questions about a subject they might not be as educated on right in front of me and several other customers. Otherwise, the service from the mechanics was acceptable but disorganized. Overall, I would steer clear away from this place. I had a slow leak in a tire and called to see if they had the same tires I have on the other rims. I was told they had 2 . I said I just needed one and asked about an oil change. Got the price and was told it would take about an hour and a half. I came in and as had happened before was ignored by the owner who never even has the courtesy to give you eye contact. I told him I called about the tire and thought it was being taken care of and gave him my key and wheel locks. Last time they searched my glove compartment without my permission so this time I made sure to give them the wheel locks. 15 minutes later when the guy I spoke to on the phone came in I asked about the tire and found out it had not been put on the work order line up. An hour and a half later I saw Al( the owner) pick up my key and wheel locks and thought the job was done . It HADN'T EVEN BEEN STARTED ! I was told the mechanic would be back in 10 minutes. No apology or notice to me that it would now probably be another hour at least. I was in the waiting room the entire time. I hear the old guy tell the mechanic to check the other tire. 5 minutes later I'm told I need 2 tires . "Or do I want the other tire with the screw in it to be put back on. " I inspected the tire and there was a new out of the box screw in it. Curious? 3 and a half hours later I now had a bill for $ 325.00 instead of about $ 160.00 . Then when the mechanic was asked if he was finished with my car, ( I had to go up and ask after seeing the mechanic hanging out at the counter for 10 minutes) he made a reeling in a fish mime action . I asked what that was supposed to mean. The guy at the desk said he didn't know. I paid and drove off pretty sure how that the other tire had their help getting damaged. Then I saw there was no oil change sticker. I went back and was told "they ran out of stickers " again no one told me about this. The one helpful guy there Jerry told the mechanic to look in the back for an oil change sticker. The mechanic came back with one. I asked him what that reeling in the fish response was about ? He said " Don't you like to go fishing? I love fishing."
