I have been a customer of Southern Aquatics for 10+ years and have NEVER been disappointed in the service and/or the fish, plants, etc. that I have purchased. We are newer to the area and have not found a good aquatics place until now! I used to help run a fish store while in college and loved it, recently getting back in the fish game after a big move. We have tried so many locations around Atlanta and none felt like a good fit. Today we were in the area and saw the sign and thought we would give it a shot. So glad we did. When I walked in there I was greeted very quickly by a woman sitting on a stool, she then passed me off to gentleman named Patrick which was very helpful. They gave you more than enough information to ensure your tank is done properly which is great. I bought a rainbow shark at $12:99 a Colombian tetra and three neon goldfish. The first fish died four hours after I brought him home, another two fish died eight hours after, so (3) of the 5 are dead. I was not aware of the stores policy that they do not refund , give new fish , or have a guarantee on their fish like pet smart or pet co. I also looked at the price of a rainbow shark at Petco and it's literally $5.99 I was simply won't buy anything at this store for a few reasons. Their prices are out of this world , and they do not stand behind their fish. I am no fish expert, and I bought this tank and fish for my son's third birthday. I have very mixed feeling about this store. I started out a very happy customer. It's a beautiful store, great looking fish, wide assortment, helpful employees... everything that I want in an aquarium store. However, I've only been there this once, and spent $498 on fish that would have been a fraction of that at Petco or Pet Smart. I understood what I was paying and was fine with it because I am more than willing to pay more to support a local shop for their expertise and I know very well that running a shop comes with overhead. Before going to the store, I quickly skimmed some reviews online, that is where I really screwed up. Somewhere along the line I got the impression the store included a guarantee of at least some sort. Petco for example is 30 days. I had gotten the impression Southern Aquatics would at least have a bare minimum guarantee, 7 days at least - particularly for those prices. I expect part of the high prices to be essentially a built in guarantee that works in their benefit when most fish keepers do not have a problem. After acclimating and releasing the fish, they colored right up and were looking great. Still looking great and eating well four days later. However, the $20 pleco did die yesterday for no reason I can explain. Water parameters are all perfectly fine, he had been eating vegis, and I've been using SeaChem ParaGuard (also picked up at the store) from the beginning just in case. That's when I finally looked at the receipt and saw where it said all live stock sales are final. Let me reiterate that, "All live stock sales are final." Not a single time in the couple hours that I was in the store did anyone mention, nor at the register after ringing up $498 in fish, did anyone mention all sales were final. Maybe it is posted somewhere and I didn't see it? It's possible, but that is very unacceptable. No guarantee is one thing, but no warning of no guarantee while happily taking a half a grand at the register... today I am not a happy customer and although the remaining fish are looking quite healthy and gorgeous, I have to admit I'm a bit more nervous that I was. Guess I won't be getting the pleco replaced, and guess I won't be going back to buy anything else. All because of lack of guarantee and more so the lack of warning about it. read more

Great local fish store. The owners are always happy to help and very friendly. They have a good variety of both Fresh and Saltwater fish. My brother had these white rocky looking things on the glass of his aquarium. I described it and they immediately knew what it was. She told me they were eggs being laid by some of the cleaner fish he had in his aquarium. She also explained what he could do to get the eggs to hatch and survive. Also this place has the best prices on RODI and Salt water of any fish store in the area. I'm glad they are just around the corner when i need to top of my aquarium. read more

Amazing for freshwater and saltwater fish! I have freshwater tanks, and there was everything I could even look for. We got guppies, a snail, and some plants, but I saw axolotls/ varieties of bettas/ cichlids/ floating plants and other aquatic plants. They really have the livestock for beginner and advanced aquarium keepers alike! I'm not as much of a saltwater expert, but it was the largest selection I've seen. I wouldn't go here to buy supplies like food, but definitely make the trip to stock your tank. The staff is super nice and very attentive -- they regularly asked us if we needed help and were very ready to grab the inventory we needed. Also, I can tell that a lot of the livestock is bred by the shop itself, which is something I appreciate for the sake of transparency (and the conditions of that breeding looked decent). The prices are reasonable, and if the prices are more than a chain store, it's due to the rarity of the fish, so it's worth it. This place used to be great, and give us kind service but our visit today was so bad that we will not be returning. Firstly their prices were VERY overpriced. I was charged $13 each for peppermint shrimp that other stores sell for $4... Our cart ended up being $200 for just a few shrimp, some freshwater plants and a testament for pests... We saw Aquariums marked up to $15,000 which from being in the hobby for over 20 years we know is ridiculous. Secondly the staff did not appear to listen to myself or my husband. When we told them we wanted a certain quantity of something they would give us extra even when we said no basically forcing us to buy more than we wanted. When we walked in they were doing water changes, and they were removing asterina stars so I asked if they would be willing to give us some with our other purchases. The last time we visited this store they gave us some complimentary but this time they overcharged us $15 for 25 PEST star fish that most people have to remove and get rid of. I only asked for 20 and again they gave me more than I asked for and charged me a ridiculous price. We were served by a girl with pink hair and a girl with green hair. Both did not seem like they wanted to be there and were not very talkative when asked about products in the store. To say we were shocked and appalled at his experience compared to the last time we had visited would be an understatement. We used to make it a point to drive to this location over other stores. We will not be wasting our gas to give this store anymore business. It really seems like you don't respect your customers when you are trying to rip them off... To make a purchase you must give your phone number and before I got in my car I had already received two texts from them. The copepods I got were also more expensive than the ones at Optimum Aquarium. EDIT: Thanks for replying Taylor. The purchase price was mainly an observation, like going into a store and being disappointed by a small selection or not finding a particular product. I am new to the aquarium world but wanted to check this out and ask questions. This store is so clean and organized. I was greeted immediately upon entering and the service here is great! I at no point felt like no one was there to help me. Employees were throughout the store and eager to answer any questions. They were not pushy at all. Tanks were organized by fresh and saltwater varieties. So many beautiful fish! I was educated on caring for my aquatic animal and also maintenance. Things have certainly changed from my WalMart goldfish and glass bowl days! There was a young teenage girl who helped me and she was more mature and bright than people my age I know. Even if you are not in the market to buy a fish I would still recommend stopping in and checking it out. When I am ready to buy I will definitely be coming here! read more

Great store, great people! We bought 2 fish and a tank setup from a big pet store and the fish ended up being sick. Dropped in to see if Southern Aquatics could give us advice. Not only did they give advice, but when the situation wasn't improving, they actually took the fish for several weeks to wean them back to health! I love this store, I've known the store and owners for just over 5 years. The employees are super nice and knowledgeable and the store itself is great, they always have what I need. Yesterday I went in and got 2 vampire shrimp, one died the next day and I called and explained the situation. I came in and they tested a water sample I brought (for free). I stopped in when ive heard about new fish store in town from local reef club. I will say that the location is very convenient. Store is very clean and they have awesome well established 480? Gallon reef tank as well as one super unique tank holding critters ect. Price of livestock is definitely on the high end but they seem very healthy over all. read more

Very happy to have found this store, I just wish it was closer to where I live! We went up on an outing on a day off from work as my home aquarium was down to 3 fish. Everyone was very nice and let us take our time looking at their displays. The store is immaculately clean, and all the tanks are obviously very well cared for (no dead fish floating in the bottom like at some big box stores). They carry both fresh and salt water, and corals and plants too (which I am impressed with anyone that cares for those). I was helped making an appropriate purchase and they even explained a newer method for introducing my new fish to my tank (and threw in some extra tubing to make it work) Also, let me give a shout out to Cooper - the friendly white husky who followed us around while we were looking and was extremely friendly (even getting his front lets up on my shoulders at one point) so be prepared for the friendly guard dog experience. :) read more

The fish are beautiful and healthy, great selection, and the store owners greet you personally when you walk in. They were very helpful and super glad to answer any questions and also give advice. I went in today for the first time in search of some hoses for my canister filter and ended up buying the most gorgeous (huge) piece of drift wood for my 75g fresh water tank at a great price! (A surprise because I was very particular in what I wanted for this tank) I loved that they carried both salt & fresh water because I enjoy both. My boys and I stumbled upon this gem of a store about 6 months ago when we were setting up a new freshwater tank. When we walked in we were blown away by the selection of fish. One of the owners, Ashley, also really took the time with my boys and got down to their level to explain things. I was amazed at her knowledge, which is something you never would find at PetSmart. On that trip we got a few Gourami, some angelfish and my son's favorite...Threadfin. We have returned several times and every time we are treated like family. I've been to quite a few of the fish stores around Atlanta, but I've always been treated the best by the folks at Southern Aquatics. Ashley and Taylor, as well as the rest of the staff, are always so polite, helpful, and will bend over backwards to help you out. I've only been in the saltwater tank game a year or so, but no matter what question I had or what problem I ran across, I was offered no-strings-attached advice. What I've learned through research online, as well as with my discussions with the staff at Southern Aquatics, and they always seem to line up. As with most things with living animals, a lot of it comes down to personal experience rather than science, to an extent, and I certainly trust this crew. They're even so awesome with my kids when I come in, and trust me, it's hard to control my shorties when they're in a fish store - they get so excited! There are many places around town one can go to for their aquarium needs, but customer service is really the differentiator in my eyes. I've been to some places who may have a bit more selection, but I usually get treated like an idiot or even worse, just totally ignored. You'll get greeted by a sweet puppy or one of the staff as soon as you walk in the door! Not only do they have great customer service, but their prices are actually pretty awesome.
