Avoid like the plague. My wife bought me a 3 expensive tangs as a gift. I dripped them with air stones and went to add them to the tank. I continually check salinity and ph to ensure they are equal before adding. 2 were added, healthy as all get out. 1, stone cold dead. My wife took water from the bucket since it never made it to my tank to return it. 2 were perfectly fine, eating, doing amazing. Apparently the guy at the register tried a number of antics like the salinity was too high, the PH was too low(even though it fluctuates due to buffers and my PH was higher than the bag it was sent in, and lack of gas exchange/buffers/airations which happens in water sealed can cause a PH drop). So the cashier used a lot of excuses on her and offered 50% credit. 50%, typically, it's 0 percent any pet store I've seen, short of a chain, if you did something wrong. So right there, red flag. I get a phone call from my wife, PH was the only thing mentioned, and I explained to him why that is not a great test. I also explained the water they sent it in was lower than my tank PH. On to the next. Nitrites.... There will be no nitrites in a tank with adequate filtration if it has been established. My one system is 420 gallons, established for over 4 years, and has over 100 gallons in it's sump with a 6ft bed of chaeto, and filtration that makes the Cybertron look outdated, so needless to say, I haven't had a nitrite problem since the first month existed, and probably not then thanks to fritz enzyme(which I keep on hand, just in case). So I tested the bucket water that I sent in. 0 nitrites in my tank. Checked the test expiration, 2027..... I did this while on the phone with OA, and told him, there are no nitrites in my tank when he said you need to give us tank not bucket water. Ok, I'll be in later today with tank water. Sorry, I'd still have to give you the same amount, 50%. I am actually breeding clownfish and stingrays as a hobby, and have a temporary license to sell fish. This required me to have my house and aquariums physically inspected by the State of Georgia. I know what I am doing. The sad thing, I know how much fish are marked up, it's a lot. I also know that they still would have made money off of me if they gave me full credit for the fish. Very bad business decision. especially since it would have been spent that day, and I'd likely be back over the weekend. These jokers lied, and lost a customer permanently. read more

While most of the tanks are clean and they always have a decent variety of fish, always ask for a receipt. Every time I've bought fish I've had to bring some back due to them dying within 24 hours of getting and acclimating them. While the return process for me has been relatively easy, It is entirely up to the person doing the test if your water parameters are "the cause" or not which can be frustrating. I have received several fish with ich but luckily caught it and separated the fish before it spread across my tank. Customer service inside the store can be all over the place, and if there are any more than five people in there good luck getting help. The gentleman with the longer red hair in my particular has been the absolute worst about getting help from, expect that you will be asking several times or multiple people for help, or waiting staring at tanks for. Their prices are great on their rarer fish however for the frustrations and out of an abundance of safety for my tanks, I will not be returning for anything other than feeder fish, at least the big box stores are more generous with their returns if something does happen read more

Bad experience. In the past I gave this business a 5 star review (can't remember which rating service I was on), but today... wow. I buy a lot of fish and supplies here since I got into the hobby 2 years ago. Most of the workers there would recognize me because I'm in there frequently for one thing of another. A couple of days ago I bought 5 cherry barbs, three males, two females ($4.99 each). Today, I noticed that one of the females was actually a veiltail cherry barb. I called and asked if I could bring this barb back, and get the correct fish (and buy two or three more, if they had them). At first I was told flat out "No". I pointed out that it was an honest mistake, but not fully my mistake. I was told when I bought, "ok, here are your cherry barbs you asked for". With the five of them swimming together it was not easy to discern, by me or the worker, that one was not correct. I'm not angry, I just want to take the wrong one back, get the correct one. After a several "Nos, and trips back and forth by the worker to discuss with the manager then me, I was told, again, "We don't do trades. But this one time, we will let you bring back the veiltale and actually get the fish you tried to buy the first time." This is just a terrible was to handle the mistake. I was really surprised as I fully expected something like, "Sorry about that. Sure, no problem. Bring it back, and get your proper cherry barb." I suppose it makes little difference to Optimum whether I give my business to them, or not. But, being treated like this does matter to me. read more

I have been here a couple of times recently and I was really impressed by the level of service I received and their level of care given to the animals. Never again. I really want to love this place. The prices are great and the people are nice, but every time I buy there over half the fish die. I admittedly don't quarantine because I don't have the space, but it's also just small relatively inexpensive fish. I bought 10 Cardinals, all died. I then got 10 neons and 2 Rams and 2 days later my whole tank had ich. The Rams died, but most of my other fish survived, but then the neons have been dying off one at a time. Most recently I bought 9 rummy nose and 3 hatchets. The 3 hatchets were gone in days and along with then my existing hatchets that been in the tank and healthy for 6 months died too. Now all but 3 of the tetras are gone. My existing school of Otto's and panda cories have been fine throughout, and so have all of my shrimp, it's just everything I get from here. Water parameters are perfect, the tank is so heavily planted even my nitrates are 0. read more

I went in to order a tank and stand. The first gentleman I worked with was great. He got all my info and said he would contact the owner and let me know on final price and ETA. I waited 4 days and called back and spoke to a different person. I asked if I could leave my contact info and have someone get back to me on the tank. He said no and that if they could have gotten the tank they would have called me back. He then told me I should go to another fish store and hung up on me. I emailed the owner about the issue and he quickly got back to me. He said he would address the problem and also find out about the tank and get right back to me. It's been two weeks and he has not returned an email or phone call. There are lots of other great stores in the area. As their sales rep told me you should shop at them. read more

Soo ... took a drive to this store to check the place out. At a glance, everything seems great. The fish look healthy, the employees were nice (even if they weren't sure of what the prices were on everything, which was weird). We've got a couple of tanks at the house, so we were looking to add a few new fish. We bought four fish. Took them home, let them acclimate to our tanks. Lost two of the fish for no reason. I found the first one belly-up this morning. The second one is in the final stages of dying now. No outward signs of sickness. Again, there is no reason for this to be happening. So I asked around. I had five different people in our area tell me they don't quarantine their fish. Three of the people lost every single fish they'd bought there (these were repeat customers, thinking it was something wrong with *their* tank), two people said "nope" after losing their first fish from there. Pretty sure we won't be back. We've got better stores closer to where we are, so we'll continue to go there to buy our fish. Plus, the prices at this place were decidedly high. A good 10-15 more than the stores near us. Nah, that's okay, we're done here. read more

We took a drive up here today to check it out, and it was hands down one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. Everyone was welcoming and professional, and the store was pristine. The displays were well laid out and the selection would be hard to beat. That in itself deserves a 4 star rating, but the 5 star rating is down to Ryan, who went above and beyond to help us with our questions (we had a lot) and eventual purchases. Coming from a retail and customer support background, I know how difficult it can be to seem enthusiastic about your work when you're answering a question for the millionth time, but he had no problem in talking to us about the various systems/plants/fish available. They have a large variety of fresh and salt water fish. They also have a decent selection of aquariums and supplies. Their pricing was way cheaper compared to most stores, which at times makes me nervous, especially with specialty fish. They had discus, flowerhorns, alligator gar, and Arowana. A lot of their fish were already partially or fully grown, which is hard to come by nowadays without paying an arm and a leg. Their tanks were all clean and I didn't see any dead fish while we were there. read more

I had been in on Saturday to look around (I was ignored then too, but I was just looking), came back today (Wednesday) to make my purchase, but literally couldn't get any of the 4 or 5 staff members to even make eye contact. I have asked them all sorts of aquarium questions, and they always have options for me, and not all of them involve spending money, which I appreciate. These employees seem to love the hobby and spreading their joy! I spent $300 with them and was about to drop several thousand on a new 120 gallon setup for my red tails . The fish they sold me died within hours . This is in a tank that has been cycled and was tested independently . I never asked for my money back on the first fish , though Greg the owner responded on another review he actually replaced the first fish which was a lie . He also made a comment on a heater , which I already had a heater and was just upgrading to a digital . Back to the fish . I took all the Advice on how to handle a peacock bass with a smile from his staff , even though I had researched . So I used the products that Greg's team recommends and bought from them . Fast forward the fish died with in hours. I have healthy fish in the aquarium and the testing shows no issues . I took the fish back up 2 hrs based on their policy of 24hrs for a refund . I only asked for credit for one of the fish I thought that fair . Their stafff immediately started talking down to me and lecturing me on cycling , even though I explained this tank had cycled and had healthy fish . My test strips show a healthy aquarium . Then then say that the testing strips are not accurate . Then they want to give a partial credit for one fish of $35 . Now they say my ammonia was to high . They claim my healthy fish have just adjusted to it . Only the owner acknowledged that with the product they gave me for dechlorination and ammonia only converts ammonia to a healthy form but still registers. One of the employees on day two maintain that the product the sold me would of made the tank bullet proof , and he has no idea why it did not . So the test they did with my water sample is not accurate. Do the math . On $300 of merchandise the markup is at lest $150 . So they were offering nothing , plus not looking at the buying power of a future customer . I would of dropped money on whatever they instructed as I was asking them what should I do. Their advice was empty your tank and let it sit for another month . The bottom line is stand behind your return policy and know your customers and create a relationship . Plus never talk down to your customers . It takes a smart person to play dumb . I would give 0 stars just on principle if I could . read more

I've tried this place a few times and the all the fish have died. I also tried getting some Apistogramma cacautoides from them and was put on a waiting list because they said they'd be in the next shipment. Got there a day after and I could tell they were not the ones I wanted but none of the employees even apologized for it. One of their main display tanks is overrun with Black Beard Algae but they could care less. Their tanks they sell are also way overpriced. They don't employee just anyone, everyone on staff are experienced aquarium owners and care about the hobby not the paycheck (although I'm sure it's important). I am very particular about where I buy my fish. Greg and his staff have definitely earned my business. The fish there always appear healthy, and there is never any algae on the tanks. I have been in some stores where they have not scrubbed the tanks in what looks like weeks (always makes me feel dirty walking into a place like that), but Optimum is not that way. We have kept many challenging species, but were shocked to have both of the expensive fish we bought the Friday before Christmas sicken and die within 3-4 days of purchase from Optimum Aquarium. Optimum Aquarium's strict 24-hour return policy is much shorter than the "we-stand-behind-our-fish" return policy of Premier Aquatics (which is measured in weeks, depending upon the fish). None of the other 40-plus fish in any of our aquariums are sick, or have displayed any symptoms or illness. We have been good customers to both stores, buying hundreds of dollars of fish, plants, food, and equipment over the past year or so. We both buy and sell salt and fresh water fish from our 3 saltwater and 1 freshwater (55-75 gals. each) tanks. We carefully watch salinity, and change 1/3 of the water every week (and re-balance the salt water ones). We keep the temperature at constant 80 degrees, and are careful about not overcrowding our tanks, and balancing "personalities" so that aggressive fish do not overstress less aggressive species. There were 3 fish in the 75-gallon tank where we put the new fish. When the wimple fish died, we were saddened, but were prepared to accept it. However, when the puffer fish died 2 days later, we began to see more than a coincidence. The best things we can say about Optiumum Aquarium is their attractive store and broad selection. However, our experience with them and their very short 24-hour return policy makes us wonder about the quality of the fish they sell. When we took the $40 and $50 fish bodies back to Optimum after 3-4 days, they refused to provide any form of compensation or replacement. Think twice before you buy from Optimum. read more

I had not opened it and still had the receipt but the date was past their normal return policy.
