I looked online prior to coming in. It is recommended that you fill out an adoption application prior to coming in so you'll be pre-approved which makes getting the cat of your choice more likely. It isn't required though, you can pop in anytime they are open to see and meet the cats available for adoption. I'm glad Holly has pissed some people off! When I was there there were a couple of groups of people that came in with kids/teens who didn't respect the cat's boundaries. I saw a boy trying to play with a cat by batting at it when the cat had already popped him and it's ears were lying flat back on it's head. There was zero awareness from the boy (mid teens) that this cat did not want to play with him, he was just terrorizing it. The cats roam freely through the facility, some like attention others want you to leave them the fuck alone. Take a hint when it's given and you'll be fine. From my experience and based on the questionnaire for adoption Hermitage is just trying to get these cats into reliable, loving, stable homes. When I dropped in yesterday I had no expectations that I'd actually be able to bring a kitty home. Whatever hoops they require a person to jump though is in the best interest of the kitties. You are not entitled to whatever cat you want whenever you want it just because it's in a shelter! I am so grateful Holly let me adopt my sweet boy yesterday but I would've completely understood if I had to wait and potentially miss out on getting him. I showed up at 4 pm just planning to look but prepared in case I found "the one". When I knew I found the one I went back out to the lobby and filled out the adoption application on my phone. Once submitted I asked how long the approval process takes. Holly said it varies and recent background checks through my employment might have sped that up. I asked if I'd be able to take him home that day or would it be Tuesday when they reopen, if approved. Holly told me it depended on whether the people there before me were adopting and how many. This was because the cats have to get a checkup before leaving and there's paperwork to be filled out. The shelter closes at 5 pm on Saturdays. Completely reasonable!! So I just hung out and played with cats until I knew for sure. Luckily there was only one adoption in front of me so Holly had time to work me in. This place is wonderful and I am so so glad I wasn't dissuaded by the mediocre yelp score. There are some very petty people and they really mess up the reliability of yelp. I do like them when they have a proper home and people who care about them. I went here with a friend of mine who lost his cat and wants to get another one. As someone who has volunteered there for over 15 years, I can attest that there are 3 separate large areas for different populations of cats (adoptable/sanctuary cats, Feline Leukemia cats, Special Needs/less than social cats) and each area typically houses between 20 and 30 felines. There are multiple rooms with screened in porches for the cats to enjoy, benches for visitors to sit on, and the only time I've seen the cats "swarm" is at the end of the day when cleaning is finished and they're expecting their treats. The post in question also claims that there is an online schedule of hours indicating that the shelter is only open to the public one day a week for 2 hours. I haven't been able to find that; instead hours are listed on Facebook as shown in the image I'm including. PAWSitively CATS is run by just a few staff members (some part time) and a few dozen dedicated volunteers. The cats are well cared for and happy.

I am someone who ADORES cats, the type of person that will take in a stray and rearrange my whole life to care for them until their last breath. My love is so great that it pains me to see these adoptable cats living in such an uninviting space. This shelter is open to the public one day a week for TWO HOURS. I thought it was an error when I saw that schedule online, but it's true. Upon entering, the building is flooded with adoptees, and for a cat lover you'd think that'd be a dream, but instead of excitement I felt a wave of anxiety. This shelter has dim lighting that doesn't allow you to see the cats clearly, and there's no space to really connect with any of them. There didn't seem like any sort of organization to pinpoint which cat was which, and since a lot of cats do look alike, you could only hope the one you bonded with is the same one you're adopting. As I tip-toed around the cats to look at the ones in cages (for medical or behavioral purposes), I could just sense the discomfort in their eyes. Safety measures seemed nonexistent in this place; anyone could easily step on a cat's paw or trip with how many swarm around you. The worst part was when I had a tour of a backroom where countless cats were fighting for a spot to feel the fresh air from a screen window. It was like looking at a can of sardines; I can't imagine any cat could present their best selves under these circumstances. Not only is there an extremely limited window to visit this shelter, but when you do, it makes you feel unhappy being there. You'll feel just as cramped and exposed as these poor babies.This situation could be the incentive for more people to adopt here, but I don't think that's fair on either side. The cats don't have any room to get to know their future owner, nor will they behave calmly when they're fighting for the spotlight. As for visitors, they'll feel more inclined to rescue the cats out of pity more than genuine connection. I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here, but then again, I almost wish you do come to decrease the population inside the shelter. I advise those who run Pawsitively Cats to work on expanding their business; a huge reconstruction of the place so there's more room for cats to live comfortably side-by-side. I am aware that there may be financial concerns involving this, so in that case, I'd suggest relocating these cats somewhere that can better cater to their needs. I'd rather that than have those innocent fur babies trapped in a dark and bleak shelter any longer. I understand that this shelter was built out of love for animals, I truly do, but for the sake of their wellbeing, Pawsitively Cats must improve. If not, people will not be inclined to help out, and the cats will be in no state to become someone's lifelong friend.

We found…read morea dog on a Sunday at 11:00 am, we waited until Humane Society opened at noon to take him in. They wanted $35 to take the dog in, but told us we could opt to keep the dog and try to find the owner ourselves. Which is what we decided to do. The Humane Society took all of the dog's information and put it into a database that they said would also be listed on Found!, a local pet finder service. The HS gave us a control number and told us to take photos and email the photos along with the control number to Found!, which we did at 2:37 pm on Sunday. I also put a listing on Craigslist to help expand the search. We also kept checking the Found! website throughout the day and evening on Sunday to see if the dog's listing was posted. It was never listed. Well, we found the dogs owner through Craigslist the very next day. The owner said she called the Humane Society several times and kept checking the Found! website, but with no result. It was on a whim that she checked Craigslist on Monday. We never heard from Found! until Tuesday at 3:37 pm by email. The executive director, Bruce Cameron, emailed us asking for the same information that we gave to the Humane Society. I emailed him back telling him we found the dogs owner through Craigslist and gave him some objective criticism about the speed of his service. He then responded very quickly to me (15 minutes after I sent my email) and proceeded to tell me that it was my fault because I did not provide the correct information. Now I admit I do not know how this service works with the Humane Society, but there appears to be a huge disconnect on both ends. My reviews purpose is to inform other fellow pet owners who have lost a pet and people who have found a pet how this service currently works. I also hope this service can take this criticism to heart when trying to improve itself. A full two day response is a disservice to lost animals and is unacceptable. I truly wish this needed and valuable service improves it's track record.

It is a shame that these organizations say they want to place into a good Home however, never bothered to follow up.

Second time visiting HKL-first time for "wine glass painting" and second for a comedy show. Both…read moreevents were great and just what I expected. The best part of course is visiting with all the cats and kittens. I love that the money I am using to attend the events go towards the Lounge and helping the felines. My friend and I have talked about visiting after work to spend some time together and hang out with the kitties. There's also a cute little gift shop with items for people and pets. Drinks are available and some snacks. The Lounge is clean considering all the cats there are. I am excited to return!
