We are a family with fairly healthy teeth, practice regular hygiene and dental cleanings, and had no significant issues 10 months (long stretch due to Covid) prior at our prior long-term dentist--upon seeing Dr. Gaddis, multiple cavities, root canals, and others services were promoted, many of questionable need. Pros: Good location, nice office, new equipment/technology, thorough hygienists, nice staff (for the most part), good bedside manner (for the most part) Cons: 1. Wife was referred for THREE root canals, ALL of which our endodontist told us he has no idea what Dr. Gaddis was referring to. Gaddis also referred us (like all her clients) to an endodontist that has many poor reviews, which was an early red flag, and why we ended up selecting our own (that is highly reviewed). It also raises the specter of potential quid pro quo between the two practices. 2. Gaddis told me my daughter needed sealant because of her baby teeth cavities being an indicator for her proclivity to cavities. When I said my prior dentist told us baby teeth are not a good indicator for cavities in permanent teeth (because they're weaker, less enamel, etc), she said "I don't recall hearing that in school". After a quick Internet search, I confirmed it is well known amongst professionals in the field that baby teeth cavities are NOT a good indicator for the health of adult teeth, leading me to conclude Gaddis either doesn't know some fundamental facts in dentistry or is intentionally discarding what she knows to promote more services (consistent with Con #1)...either of which is not good. 3. Front office staff can be a bit edgy/dry/cold...not outright mean, but not generally warm, like our prior practice. It's not a deal-breaker on its own, but coupled with the other issues not helpful. We were really hoping that we'd found a new dental home and allowed benefit of the doubt several times, but ultimately too many red flags have pushed us back to our prior practice until we can find a better local option.

His office staff was very nice and easy to work with. His hygienist Hannah was phenomenal. Here is my problem, in those 7 years, Dr. Nelson repeatedly found cavities. I had fillings on multiple teeth at least 4 times. I never questioned it. My last visit with Dr. Nelson was right before I moved out of Durham, he said he had found more cavities that needed to be filled. I went to a new dentist when I moved to get it addressed and he said I had no cavities. I went back to my childhood dentist for a third opinion and he also found no cavities. In the seven years since I left Dr. Nelson, I have seen 5 different dentists and no one has found a single cavity. So I have a mouth full of fillings that I suspect was never needed. That makes me sad.

Dr…read more Service is very personable although after my first appointment in which he took new ex-rays and really did a whole check-up I haven't seen him more then ten minutes during the appointments. Betty has a great personality and does a wonderful job with my cleanings. She and Dr. Service do a great job giving recommendations and answering my questions. The cleanings cost $135 per visit and the only thing I'd recommend is to make sure you have your insurance straightened out. I'm still on the parental plan and the insurance checks are mailed to them directly instead of the dentist office (insurance--ugh). You just have to remember to send the check to Dr. Service because they won't come calling until you have a interest fee, just be aware. I like the way the appointments are made, you can either schedule them six months out or receive a phone call a month in advance (which is more convenient to me as I'm not always sure what six-months out looks like). I've never waited long in the office for an appointment but if I did I'm not sure I would notice because I'm too focused on the tank of lovely fish and many magazines for browsing. I'll keep returning to Dr. Service for all my dental cleanings!
