I just realized that it's been over five years since I have written a review for Southern Hands. I haven't been much lately. Today I stopped in for lunch because I was on the go and had an appointment on the same strip. I will say that the service was pretty quick. They had lunch specials available until 2pm, so I got the baked spaghetti plate. It causes with two sides. The spaghetti was not good at all. The cheese is what saved it. The cabbage literally taste like water. It had no seasoning at all. I couldn't even finish it. The beans were ok, but I was highly disappointed of all in the cornbread. That's always the main attraction for the brand itself, however, the piece I had today was hard as a brick! I had to put it in the cornbread to soften it up. I hope whatever is going on is rectified soon. They've been around for a long time and I would love for it to stay that way for them. read more

Just got food from this place for the first time and it was amazing. I ordered the Salisbury streak and potatoes with black eyed peas. Phenomenal. Cornbread is perfect. The place looks great and super clean. All of the staff is super nice as well. Thanks guys!! Will be coming back soon. read more

This southern dining has taken a step above the rest. Makes online pickup orders easy by leaving your purchases on a side table. Uses the "trust system"; that is Find your name, check you orders for sure, leave. The food is fine most of the time. I believe there are different cooks with different recipes. Spaghetti sauce is watery and strange; not the same anymore. Dressing needs work or some type of magic cornbread. Limited greens and some days 'no greens'. For the price, it will do. When I walked in the door, there was a long line, but I was through it in two or three minutes because they are fast. I had my food only a couple of minutes after placing my order and was on my way. The chop steak was very hard but tasted great. The spaghetti was very spicy like it had spicy barbecue sauce on it and I am not a fan of that. The dressing was good like Thanksgiving day. The cornbread was good and sweet. They threw in some cranberry sauce and it was pretty good too. It cost $15.94 for this plate lunch. read more

The only good thing here is the cornbread. Even the drinks are nasty and watered down. It's the worst place to represent southern cooking. Do your self a favor and skip over this place. Trust me you don't wanna eat here. read more

Very good food and a fine example of southern cooking at its best, the perfect definition of southern hands in my opinion is somewhere between cafeteria, franchise and hole in the wall taste, it's not quite Grandma's cooking and not quite a franchise taste either. Food is well seasoned, but not salty either, portions are reasonable and prices are on par, if not albeit a little cheaper than similar Soul Food restaurants. They even have a lunch menu with reduced prices, always a plus. Menu items vary greatly and represent some southern favorites; such as meatloaf, baked chicken, dressing, yams, pork chop smothered in gravy, cornbread, cabbage and much, much more. I have eaten at this establishment, and the food was pretty decent. The last time I went there for a specific dessert, though, they did not have it. Today, I went by there for a meal. The first thing I noticed is that Chicken and Dressing is on the menu, and is stated to be served all day. However, i looked at the side note, and it's only served two days a week. How interesting that it's served all day, but it's only served two days per week. Despite that, I went ahead and began placing an order. One vegetable on the menu is turnip greens. When I got to ordering the greens, the cashier asked if I would like cabbage instead, because the greens are not served every day. Geeezzz! Why bother to put it on the menu if it's not being served??? I cancelled my order and left to go some place that actually serves what it has on the menu. Makes no sense to me. It's probably just a matter of time until this joint is out of business. read more

Went for lunch today. Got there before it opened, so we were the first in line. He ordered Meatloaf with mac and cheese and yams, and sweet tea. I ordered wings with no sides. Little one got mac and cheese. Order took about 10 minutes since they make the wings to order. I tasted some of the meatloaf and mac and cheese. The wings were delicious. Spicy sauce with some sweetness. Super generous portion. I had plenty to take home after lunch. They got spicier as they sat and were quite warm when I finished them several hours later. You can get them plain, too, if you don't want the heat. They were not crispy, so if you like them that way be sure to request it. Meatloaf was so good. Nice seasoning and good gravy/sauce on it. Cracker Barrel ought to take lessons from this place. Mac and cheese was tasty. Not super-creamy, but good nonetheless. I had a sip of the sweet tea. It is typical Memphis tea. Good flavor but SUPER sweet. Friendly cashier. Very clean place. Would recommend to anyone liking this type of food. read more

I love the idea of supporting this business but today, 2.5 hours before closing on a Sunday and "out of baked chicken". Really!? The food here is pretty good. The online ordering system always leaves me with a negative image of the place. I order, pay, and get an almost immediate "order rejected" with no explanation. It takes my bank 3-4 days to release the pending transaction. Not good business for someone living a half mile away. read more

Overall the food is good. Love their fried catfish, but the greens always appear to be not cleaned good and they are usually out of them. It's always some gritty crunch to them as if not washed good. How is it that this location NEVER answers the phone?? On a Tuesday 45mins after opening and you still cant manage to pick up the phone for a to go order!? Sooooo Good! This is by far the best soul food in the city. I have been to all 3 locations and they are all fantastic! Meatloaf, candied yams, and cornbread are the best I've ever had. I try to patronize this business as often as I can but this is the second time I've had a complaint about this. I went yesterday and got a four vegetable plate. The greens appeared to be dirty. Every bite I would bite into some crunchy sand or dirt of some sort. It will be kind of difficult for me to continue to patronize this business. I think the costumers deserve better quality of food, especially for the prices they are charging for the small portions. $7.49 plus tax for four vegetables and a piece of bread and I wasn't a pleased customer. read more
