Bought crawfish here for Mother's Day and 11 people got food poison. 7 of them went to Er because the pain was bad.

The crawfish are spicy and delicious and the crab legs are huge!!!! They get you in and out pretty fast and are reasonably priced.

Literally the best crawfish ever! I have been going here since I first moved to Atlanta when I was 14, and they have never let me down! The crawfish is by far the best thing-- super spicy and flavorful, even when they have to use frozen crawfish during off season. They also have king and snow crab legs in a deep freezer. You can pick the amount you want and have them cook it to your liking, along with potatoes, corn, and sausage if you like. I no longer live in Atlanta, but every time I'm home I HAVE to go here. read more

The place is a real hole in the wall joint where you CAN eat the seafood you order at a folding table with a can of grape soda and a paper plate if you want but it's hot and smelly in there like you imagine a place cooking seafood would be. Let me be clear though - this was the best dish of steamed Old Bay snow crab legs I've ever had. Three clusters cost me $20 and every single leg cracked by hand perfectly and you could pull the entire chunk of crab meat out clean. I was in crab leg heaven. I found Southern Seafood listed on Yelp and decided to try it. The picture of seafood showing mussels,crab claws and scallops in a broth look delicious. So I drove to the location on Lawrenceville Hwy in Decatur. I went to the counter showed the person the picture of what I wanted exactly what they had posted on Yelp as my order. He told noooo they did not make this dish. I said whatta but it is posted... They have a fake picture on Yelp.. I left very very disappointed. I will never go back there..Southern Seafood take down your fake picture it is misleading.. I read a post that this place is a best keep secret more like a best lie. read more

Let's put it this way, if you're from New Orleans and you're looking for crawfish berled right around Atlanta, this is your best bet. It turns out that my sister went in there to explain how displaced Cajuns like it - with lead soldering heat gawdammit! and they've been doin' it proper ever since. Walked in because they were opened on a Monday, Shrimp $11.99 a pound, asked if they peel and devein, they said no. I had two butter sauces .75c each....the total was $16.83....total rip off!! They don't tell you they charge to steam the shrimp!! Never going back there again...my regular seafood place was closed. Don't waste your money! Make no buts about it, Southern Seafood is a no-frills seafood market. It's not pretty, there's only one plastic table, and it smells a little. BUT, it does have darn good seafood. I've tried crawfish from here twice, once at a friend's house, and the other I bought & brought it home. They're tasty bugs, and can't beat the price at $4.99/lb. I also got boiled shrimp recently- they're humongous and fresh! I got the $6.99/lb one with head on (keeping the head on while boiling will seal in the moisture). They were so tender and tasty. When you order at Southern Seafood, they'll measure out the goods that you want, and cook/boil them on the spot. You can even specify the level of spiciness you want. We fed 4 people for under $50. We were so stuffed. No where else can you get so much seafood for this price. I'll be swinging by this place on the way home to pick up for dinner more frequently in the future :) PS- they are open until 8pm on most nights. read more

Based on the other reviews, I was prepared for the smell that I would encounter upon entering this place...or thought I was. The smell was alarming. Like it might crawl up your nose and take up residence. Despite this, the good reviews and a deep craving for crab spurred me on. I picked the crab legs I wanted from the freezer, took them to the counter, requested for them to be steamed and was handed a ticket. It only took about 10 minutes for the legs to cook. I ordered "mild" but they came out rather spicy anyway. That said, they were DELICIOUS. They tasted very fresh. The shells snapped easily and the meat removed easily. The seasoning, although unexpected, added a pleasant kick. I will definitely be returning. The reason this place didn't get 5 stars is that the service was a little sketchy (I was not given instructions on what to do even after I stated that I had never been there before so I had to figure it out on my own) and, even though I am sure there is a legitimate reason that place smells as it does, it is still rather...bracing. I had to give Southern Seafood another chance. The crawfish was so much better this time around. I had no issue with finding a half bag of empty crawfish. It could be because I went there when it was out of season? Maybe? The seasoning was never an issue and had lots of spice and flavor. You can't beat $5.99/lb!!! read more

The smell of this place is alarming. I mean I seriously almost walked out. It wasn't fishy, but it wasnt fresh fish. It was like a melange' of fish in various states of freshness and decomposition. Aside from that it's a very nondescript joint, definitely no frills here, and not set up for dining in. The only reason I stayed was because I've been meaning to try this place and I was in the area. You basically saunter up to the counter and tell them what you want. No menu, just straight free style and DIY on crablegs (which was another turn-off...there are 2 deep freezers along the wall-the kind serial killers keep bodies in-complete with rusty spots on the bottom-this is where the crab is kept and basically customers come in from outside grab a tray and reach their booger pickin in traffic hands into the freezer and select their crab and take it to the counter) No Bueno. Aside from that, no matter what your selection, good luck with getting any pleasantries from the broad behind the counter. Not feelin her at all, but anywho, I happened to want crawfish and shrimp which I guess was "safe" and threw potatoes and corn on for $1.20. I've actually had their crab as a friend of mine had a crableg spread at a party a few months back. Turns out they came from here. I remember them being too salty. And now that I've seen the set up I'm a little grossed out. I was asked if I wanted my shrimp peeled and deveined I stated yes. I was then informed that it would cost $1.00 extra...ummm ix-nay on the eel pay, thank you very much. (I didn't even get a lb, wasn't worth it) I should note here that when I went to pay I was trying to figure out how my total came to what it did...well they charge you $1.00 to cook the food. Um...that would be worth nothing as well especially if as the young lady stated "it's a common question" I sat and waited and looked around for signs of filth to justify leaving cause between the totally pedestrian decor and Miss Giggles that waited on me I was over this place. I didn't see any signs of filth per se but then I looked at the window sill where a few dead flies had apparently met their maker. No Bueno. At this point I've decided I will never be back no matter how good these damn sea roaches are. Well, no worries there. The sides I added were impessive for the price...I got 3 halves of small potatoes-not the little meatball sized ones you usually get with seafood. The corn was the standard half but it was sweet and good. can't complain for $.60 each. The crawfish were fairly spicy, but not as much as I'd expected. IMO they were more salty than they were seasoned. Not in a way where they were inedible, but definitley noticeable. Now the shrimp on the other hand were perfect. They were fresh, not too salty, not over done with flavors so you taste the shrimp. They were also perfectly cooked texture wise. I've died and gone to heaven.. and that heaven is filled with succulent crawfish. I moved to Atlanta from TX about 4 years ago and have always lamented not being able to find good crawfish here. I went to Crawfish Shack, which was just okay. Didn't try any other crawfish joints for a few years, then finally went to Fat Crab in Duluth a couple weeks ago, which was very tasty (flavor was slightly better than Southern Seafood's but on the other hand more buttery), but the crawfish were small and it was expensive. Then comes Southern Seafood. It's a seafood market, not a sit down restaurant, so you don't go there for the decor. However we were so eager to devour our crawfish that we decided to eat in. They have two long plastic tables with some chairs, one roll of paper towels. We got 5 lbs of their seasoned crawfish which was mildly spicy, great flavor. $4.99 per pound. Added on some corn on the cob and potatoes which were 75 cents each. These crawfish were huge! My husband had a nice time eating the crawfish claws. The next day when I woke up I was craving crawfish again. Hope that helps. read more

Go for the mussels! They can steam them for you and even make them all Cajun style spicy, which is how I get them. Those suckers are HUGE, too. I paid $13.98 for 4lbs, spiced and steamed and I think it's worth every penny. They also have crawfish (corn on the cob & potato on the side?) as well as seafood to take home and prepare yourself. The tuna is decent and reasonable and they have real gulf shrimp, too! None of that crap from China or the Phillipines. The people that work there have always been friendly and after you go a few times they remember what you ordered previously. If you want the steamed stuff to go, I highly recommend calling in your order in advance. They get really busy during lunch time and after work, so if you don't want to wait, call ahead. read more

Love this place! They sell fresh seafoods but I mainly come here for crawfish and if in season, steamed blue crabs. They're a little out of the way to drive for some crawfish but they're worth it. Cheap (when in season) and the Canjun flavor is so good. Super spicy but I don't mind it. However, if you are like me who like to make your own crawfish, you can buy the live ones and make them in your own kitchen. Just some clarifications for those who don't come here often: It's really more like a seafood market. I don't particularly recommend dining in since it's not really a sit down restaurant. They have two tables and several chairs, that's all. Get your order to go. Folks here speak decent English, but not perfect. And they do get busy sometimes. Please be nice about it. Don't assume you are being treated differently or being discriminated against because you are or are not Asian/Vietnamese/black/white/whatever. If they forgot about you, just remind them nicely. Great place to pick up fresh seafood for one person or ten! The food is very fresh and they will steam and shell it for a nominal fee. Prices are very competitive, about what you would expect from the DeKalb Farmer's Market. The downside is that it is often overcrowded and not much to look at. There are a few tables, but don't plan to eat in. Expect to see shrimp, crab, mussels, frog legs, crawfish and several types of fish. Potatoes and corn are available on the side. I've been in for skimps twice and both times the price was decent, the service was fast, the food was excellent, and the place was packed. I see lot's of recommendations on the crawfish. Mudbugs are most definitely next on the list. They have a wide selection of other seafood. I need to dive in and experience more! No fishy smell when you walk in! Fairly clean for a fish market. I have been traveling around 285 East to this place for a few years. Wish it were closer so I could pick up seafood every week. The crab legs are a nice size not like the small ones at Kroger and some of the Publix supermarkets. When you ask them to steam your food it is done just right. I have never had overcooked seafood there. Some of the other items I have tried are the shrimp and the crawfish, all very good! Prices can be a little higher than the grocery store when on sale but it is worth it. read more

This place is hands down my spot for boiled seafood. Hands down. Their crawfish reminds me of good times in New Orleans....what more can you really ask for? We went on Christmas Eve to stock up on boiled stuff for our Xmas Eve boil, and were not at all disappointed. They had tubs of boiled crawfish....but we opted for shrimp and king crab. Are crawfish back in season? Those things must have been frozen, but whatever.... This place is bare bones, and smells like seafood boil. All other comments about it reeking like rotten vajayjay are a bit much IMHO. When you ask for spicy....it's spicy. Corn and potatoes are yummy, and you can stock up on Camellia beans and more Zatarains mixes than I knew existed. I love this place. I've never tried any of their fresh fish, but the selection always looks a bit skimpy. One bad thing: everything was a little salty, which made me sad. As a native New Orleanian, I'm always looking for boiled crawfish come spring time. We tried out Southern Seafood this past weekend after reading the good reviews and were pleasantly surprised. They were hot both in temperature and spice and a good size. Nothing worse than peeling tiny boiled crawfish. My only complaint is the seating they offer which is very minimal. But it IS really a seafood market and everyone else was coming and going as we gorged on. If you just can't wait to get home like us, hope that the one table is open and waiting for you. Otherwise, to-go is your best option. Overall: GREAT boiled crawfish and constant traffic of to-go seafood orders, so I can only assume the rest is just as delicious. read more

Be warned: the crawfish is REALLY spicy. I ordered 3 pounds and left half of that uneaten because I finally decided that not wasting food was not worth the suffering of trying to finish, plus my stomach was starting to burn from how spicy it was. I read the reviews and have had crawfish seasoned on the spicy side before, so I thought I would be okay. But nope. A lady in front of me in line said she got a nosebleed from how spicy the crawfish were. I didn't take her seriously since she was back for more. I should have taken her seriously. Awesome crawfish, and great prices. The flavoring is spicy, but not overwhelming. The giant shrimp they offer was as fresh as New Orleans restaurants, although a bit pricey to me. I feel really disappointed when I ordered some crab legs on the phone, customer service said it $12.89 per pound, so I ordered ten pounds and he ask me if I want them to cook and I said yes, didn't realize that they charge me for cooking service.
