Doctors are excellent, but the support staff and billing process have been extremely frustrating. I received a "First and Final Notice" for a bill more than two years after my visit. Despite multiple attempts, I have been unable to reach the billing department. When I called the office for assistance, they were unable to help and simply transferred me back to billing, where no one answers the phone. To make matters worse, the note on the bill threatened collections "Collections have begun". I attempted to pay the balance online, but the Phreesia payment system froze and would not complete the transaction. At this point, I have tried every available option: The billing department does not answer calls. The office staff cannot answer billing questions. Calls are routed back to billing with no resolution. The online payment system is not functioning. The physicians may provide good care, but the administrative and billing experience has been unacceptable. If patients cannot get answers to billing questions or make payments through the available channels, there are serious organizational issues that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, this experience has earned a well-deserved one-star review. read more

Dr. Craig refused to see my husband because of a "bad" Google review. SO incredibly petty and unprofessional. My husband arrived to the office for his follow-up appointment and was told that Dr.Craig is refusing to treat him. They could have called him to let him know in advance before driving to the office. I have never heard of anything so petty in my life. These doctors don't care about their patients. They care about their pride and that dollar. Find another business to get better care. read more

I've never been to a more money-hungry scam of a doctor's office. I came here for an epidural. Somehow, they have organized this place so that they can charge you independently for as much as possible by using 3 "different" offices. 1. Southlake. Which I was charged for the original (consultation) even though they already had my MRI, symptoms, and knew I was referred for an epidural. Then, they charge you for a "doctor finder's fee" to set you up with their surgery center before you even have your appointment there. 2. Medplex. Medplex charged me for the surgery and also wanted to "outsource" anesthesia (Sweet Dreams Anesthesia) which isn't even needed for my procedure. They tried multiple times to convince me to get anesthesia even though I insisted on local. (An epidural is virtually just a steroid shot for those of you that do not know) 3. A follow up. Never in my life have I been charged for a follow-up after a procedure. Especially one where all they're gonna ask is "did it help?". They wanted $400 to ask me a single question. They attempt to get away with this though breaking up everything possible into multiple operations rather than one procedure to hit your insurance (or you if you're paying by yourself) for everything they can. I've had epidurals before, and they have never done what Southlake is doing. Avoid if you don't want to be scammed. P.S. The epidural did nothing This was the review I left on Google after a poor experience. After getting what I needed for a follow-up, I was banned from the practice. They did not call me. They scheduled me. I came into the office. I waited 20 minutes in an exam room to be told I was banned because of my review and would have to find another doctor. Looking through the reviews, it looks like I'm not the only person that this has happened to. Rather than improve your experience, take the feedback, and make their practice better, they'd rather just ban the people they don't agree with. Save yourself the effort and look elsewhere. P.S. No complaints on the Drs I've seen. The nurses and post op care is atrocious. It is nearly impossible to reach anyone directly. Be prepared for an extensive hold time before you then hold once again or leave a message for the person you're trying to reach. It's insulting and displays a lack of regard for the patients needs. A minimum 1 hour wait past the appointment time to see the Dr. Post op this was a painful yet eye opening experience; one I will not repeat. read more

Who cares? This is how I felt after visiting the this morning at 8.30, Oct 30, 2023. I broke my left arm radius radial head on Thursday Oct 26. Went to Grandview Emergency where they performed xray,s and put me in a temp cast. I was referred to Dr Michael Smith, who even DID NOT look at my elbow!!! Wait, what? An orthopedic surgeon who even don't look at a patient's injury??? He said that their xray was so bad/fuzzy that he couldn't see anything really. Wait, what? Can make out anything from their simple elbow xray??? How old and outdated is their machine? Anyway, their charged me $50!!! copay just to tell me they couldn't do anything and refererred me to their buddy for a CT scan at a cost of $217 copay. I feel they are more in the business of greasing each others hands than really caring for a patient well-being. And NOBODY even cared putting back my temp cast/arm brace. Had to do it myself!!!!! Dr Kirchner is absolutely phenomenal. My daughter is on the spectrum and had been brushed off by another doctor because she was still able to run and play on her ankle while telling us that it hurt. Even after explaining to the other doctor that she has SPD and doesn't process pain in a typical manner. Dr Kirchner knelt down below my daughter so she was looking down on him. He was full of smiles and she walked out saying she liked him. Lo and behold, she had to have surgery. He was an absolute rockstar!!!!! The response time of the nurse phone line just isn't cutting it for my broken bone. The doctors seemed very rushed, so I suppose many people are hurting, but consider aid elsewhere. I haven't had a doctor talk about giving me a prescription without making sure to hand me paper before, but that happened and I left without pain meds. My boot fit feels terrible, I'm getting a lot of pressure and my heel is floating, but I wasn't asked how I felt upon fitting so I assumed it was right. I edited my emotional review. I think you can get help here, but somewhere else may be better. read more

Hard to even give one star. Waited two weeks for a call back (after leaving several messages) concerning scheduled MRI and insurance forms incorrectly completed by this office. Dr Heck left message for me to call him concerning my treatment and I was never able to speak to him or a nurse even though I called multiple times. All I can say is a waste of my time and money. A few years ago, I hurt my cuboid. I saw Dr. Krauss and promised myself I'd never go to this practice again. He disregarded my injury and put my extreme pain to the fact that I was overweight. After suffering, I got a second opinion, and the MRI showed it was still broken. Dr. Krauss wasn't willing to listen. A doctors job is to diagnose, not make assumptions. However, last year, my mom had severe pain and was referred to Dr. Booker via her Primary Care. If I had known it was Southlake Orthopaedics, I would have asked for another doctor. Wait times were long, but she got a shot that lasted 3 months. To get another shot after 3 months, I have called several times with no response. My mom is limping and in severe pain. Patient care is not their first priority. Birmingham has several places that put patience care and well being ahead. Avoid this place at all cost. read more

My experience with my hand was anything but good. First, the scheduling is horrific. My time is no less valuable than theirs and every appointment, I arrive early as requested and find myself waiting,always, at least 1 hour to be seen. I had an ulnar bone reduction because the Dr., Dr Bonatz, said that would fix my pain and movement issues. I had the operation and looked as if some additional wrist work was done. After 6 months I still had problems and the issue with my wrist was even worse. I requested a follow up to see what the problem might be. What I got was an X-ray showing me the surgery was done and the bone reduction. After explaining that it was not that the bone reduction was done, but, that it is now worse and I also have numbness and some elbow issues. The equivalent response was .... oh well. 9 months later it is still painful and I still have numbness. I would be better off, less pain, complications, had I not had the surgery. If you break it I expect you to follow through and fix it. read more

I popped something in my knee while I was down in Hoover Alabama on business. After this injury my knee filled with fluid and the pain was excruciating. I knew the procedure required as well as the qualifications of the attending doctor so I struggled while interviewing the medical facilities. I reached out to all the urgent care places including the hospital emergency room and none of them could accommodate my needs. When I called Southlakes it was clear they were the right place to go and I was able to get an appointment the same day. They quickly initiated me to their process and after finishing the paperwork they moved me right to a room. Katie was the treating attendant and she was awesome. She was sensitive to my pain and gentle as she drained the fluid. I almost hugged her when she was done because she dramatically mitigated my pain level. I appreciate how well I was treated and would recommend Southlakes to anyone needing medical attention. I am from out of town but they treated me like their next door neighbor. Unfortunately I cannot give a raving review to Southlake Orthopedics. I had an appointment April 29th that had been scheduled for several weeks with Dr. Bonatz. The appointment was scheduled for 1:15, I waited in the waiting room until 2:45 and still hadn't been called back. I had to leave due to other demands later in the day. Dr. Bonatz, I'm sure, is an excellent hand specialist, but the scheduling of so many patients to one time slot is absolutely ridiculous. Even at 2:45, there were 3 other patients ahead of me. I understand circumstances arise that are beyond our and their control, but that should be expressed to the patients waiting. read more

I had a bunion on my right foot that was removed by Dr. Kirchner on November 30 2021. When I talked with him pre surgery I asked what the recovery time was for this surgery and was told 2 to 3 weeks. When I went back for post op visit over a month later I still had major pain every step I took with my right foot. He sent me to rehab for 8 visits which helped a little bit but still in pain and having to walk with a limp. I made another appointment with Dr. Kirchner 4 months after surgery and was still in pain and still walking with a limp. I asked him why after 4 months I was not healing when he told me it was a 2 to 3 week recovery. He just said it was our goal to be pain free and just left the room. I called him back into the room and asked again why it was taking so long to heal. He just would not give me an answer. I believe with all my heart he lied to me about recovery time because if he told me it would take many months to heal that I would not have had the surgery. It has now been 7 months post surgery and I am still walking in pain. He has ruined a snow skiing vacation and more. I have ran and walked for exercise for 40 years and can't do that anymore because the more I walk the worse the pain gets. I always thought doctors would be upfront and honest about whatever surgery they are to perform on their patients, but this doctor isn't one of them. I truly believe he lied to me to get the surgery. First to Review I want to be clear with this review so all can understand where I'm coming from.. My wife went to these individuals (I'm not going to give them the courtesy of calling them doctors) and I got into a dispute over their parking lot.. I hope I can get this across right - This is an orthopedic clinic.. almost everyone who goes is incapacitated in some way.. crutches, wheelchair.. The morning of this little event I watched six people struggle to cross the long parking lot.. Meanwhile... right next to the building - EXTREMELY CLOSE - is "private doctor parking." I sat there and watched a young doctor or intern come in, park right next to the building get out...put his backpack over his shoulder and as he started to walk right up to the side door he looked out at the front parking lot and saw an over weight young lady with casts on both legs trying to get from the back of their lot to the door.. And this "classy" young doctor laughed out loud at this woman.. She couldn't see or hear it, but I did.. that needed to be told because everything that happened following shows this bunches' bad character.. Now, I parked in this area..it's not posted as a tow away zone.. it's not posted at all that it is private parking.. There are rubbed off letters that were names but it wasn't obvious.. So, I park and go in.. As my wife is doing paperwork a very rude receptionist or office support worker came up to me and threatened to have my car towed.."YOU ARE IN DOCTOR CRAIGS SPOT!" (and Craig is one huge a-hole..and either a liar or is very ignorant of the law..) Ok so I move my car down into a completely empty area 'but still in the same area' and stayed in the car waiting on my wife.. These sorry pathetic elitist doctors called the police out to me.. - while my wife is in their business giving them hundreds of my dollars, this a-hole doctor Craig came out and wanted me off the property and possibly arrested! (that's what makes me the maddest) Instead of just letting it go.. I was not doing anything except hurting these elitist doctors pride because I was parking in their area (right by the door) in an empty spot bothering NOBODY! They call big bad Hoover..who bumbled around not knowing what to do.. I moved off the clinics property and waited.. She had to walk a long way until I saw her.. Listen, if you've ever been to a real orthopedic group then you've seen the hugely accommodating parking.. St. V on 280 is a great example.. their doctors park way off the property to make sure their patients HAVE ALL OF THE PARKING AND ESPECIALLY THE VERY FRONT..CLOSE SPOTS! I'm sick of elitist doctors who get bent out of shape if you park in their area.. btw this was not a roped off or separate area.. it was just the closest parking spaces.. They have just given the doctors who are paid well, all the convenience... and all the patients who can't walk no convenience.. All the while taking their money.. Bad place ..bad doctors.. I like Dr Suddeth and his staff. But it's unacceptable for physician practices to consistently see patients after their scheduled appointment. I'm not talking 5 minutes. It was an hour the first visit before I was called back and 30 minutes the second visit. Third visit, still waiting. Patients are customers and their time is valuable too. Unless you have two hours of spare time to see a doctor, I'd suggest finding a physician at another practice that values their patient's time. read more

I've been going to this location for over a year now. This is a full service facility. There are doctor offices, physical therapists, and there is an outpatient surgical center. The doctors I have visited here have always seemed knowledgeable and polite. Unfortunately, even with an appointment there is a long wait time to even be placed in an exam room. The physical therapy is located on the 2nd floor. They seem to rotate their patients. I don't think I ever had the same one twice in a row but each are professional and seem to know what they're doing. The surgical center is in a seperate building and I have visited there 3 times. All staff members encountered have always been pleasant. My only complaint is they'll ask you to come in at 6am and not bring you back to a room until 9am. No wifi access makes this a terrible wait for me. Minus 2 stars for wait times exceeding 1 hour past appointment time and surgical center. They could at least offer wifi if they're going to make us wait so long since I get practically no cell reception inside. read more

I have visited Southlake Orthopedics on and off for over an year due to a car accident. informed that due to care accidents you have to see one specific Doctor and they don't do third party billing they will bill your major medical health insurance. if they are billing my Major medical health insurance then why do they stick you with a certain provider who has no regards for a patient's time. I have been to this office several times between 20017-2019 and I have never been seen on time, after 30 minutes of waiting in the front you are taken to the back exam room where you are waiting again for over an hour. The nurse does not come in and let you know the doctor is running behind. and you are just sitting there is discuss. the nurse comes in after over an hour and informs you the need to do an x-ray, that's just to kill more time. When the doctor finally comes in, he does not have your entire chart from the previous visits and does not go over the x-rays with you unless you ask. My last visit I heard another patient in the room across from complaining about the waiting time for this Doctor also. I have never seen such a disregard for a patient's time by a medical facility.I work for one which makes me appreciate them more. Be prepared to for you visit to be over 3 hours long or more..... read more

Two separate encounters here. I will start with the good. Dr Brookings. He and the nursing and admin staff moved mountains to fix the issue I encountered and I am very thankful to them. I had an appointment to see another doctor there, who I won't name as it isn't fair to them. After he cancelled my first appointment I got rescheduled for 2 weeks later which was the appointment this AM. My appointment was at 8, but I am told at 8:15 he is stuck in traffic and is still another hour away from arriving so I can either wait or reschedule again. At this point I was upset and ready to write off Southland. This is where Dr Brookings, the unnamed Dr's scheduler and all of the admins and nurses with Dr Booker stepped up and shoved me in the appointment line so I didn't waste a trip or time off of work for nothing. The willingness to go above and beyond is why this is a 4. If this was just them it would be a massive 5. If only the unnamed doctor this would be a 1. I am glad I didn't just walk out and give up in Southlake as they came through for me read more

This is the worst orthopaedics I have ever experienced.I had trouble with this facility the first time in 2008 but decided to give the physicians a second chance recently after being referred to them. I found the physician to be very rude and argumentitive . Upon leaving my appointment i scheduled a follow -up appointment for a couple months later.. when I returned for this appointment they had no recod of me having an appointnent.. I took off work for this and there were wages lost. The front staff was not helpful in anyway.I asked if i could see another physician because I had another appointment to make that day and they said I would have to wait.. My physician wouldnt even be in untill 9am and I was originally scheduled for an 8:30 appointment...I will never use this clinic again and I will make sure anyone I know needing Orthopaedic care knows not to come to this clinic. read more

The office staff runs the show at Southlake. I found the doctors that I saw at Southlake to be caring and concerned. However, the office staff did everything they possibly could to KEEP me from getting in touch with the doctors. I started seeing one doctor at Southlake and immediately had some billing issues. I came in, in-person, and asked to speak with someone in billing. They told me that the front office staff had not been charging me incorrectly. I was referred to another doctor within Southlake and things got worse. I came in one day for tests and stopped by the front desk to give the doctor a message regarding some new symptoms. I spent over an hour in the office and went to work. Several hours later, I received a phone message that I needed to go to the Emergency Room! WHAT?! I attempted to call the office the rest of the day, but kept going into a loop thru their automated phone system. I finally paged Dr. Craig after hours. He told me that he was told I just walked in and spoke to someone and left. He was genuinely concerned about my symptoms. I complained to the office staff and to Judy Blake the next time I came into the office. Apparently, this made the office staff mad. I could not reach anybody in the office by phone for a few weeks after that. I contacted the Grandview office. They argued with me at first, but did send an email to Judy. I got in touch with Brandy, there, who said she was an office manager. She told me she would send my email address to Judy so we could communicate that way. However, what she did was MISSPELL the email address that was previously, correctly, in their system. The next time I attempted to contact the office, Melissa was answering. I DID get thru to her, but she left me on hold, transferred me to voicemail, and even hung up on me once. When I went back to the office, I gave Judy my correct address and she stated that Sarah would get me set up in the Patient Portal to contact the office that way. However, when I went to the front, Sarah LIED and said there was NO MESSAGING through the Patient Portal. (There were other office staff present when she did this.) I got home and set myself up in the Portal, and, yes, there WAS messaging. Mind you, the whole point of me getting in touch with the office was to return Judy and Dr. Craig's calls to me because they were seriously concerned about my health. The last time I contacted Southlake, I called the Grandview location to ask them to send an email to Judy to let her what happened with Sarah. They argued with me and refused to, even hung up on me. One person alleged they were sending an email, but I don't know if she actually did. Unfortunately, it appears the doctors don't have much control over anything, the office staff run the show, and, apparently, decide which patients are seen. read more

I have had 3 surgeries at south lake and the first 2 went fine. Then there was the 3rd, I was told that I was going to have another herniated disc surgery on the right side this time.the dr.told me there would be another incision on the right side. Also I was told the recovery time and recovery process would be the same as my previous back surgery. After I returned from surgery my wife said the dr. told her he used the same incision as he used on the previous surgery. He also told her he did a different surgery than I was told.i was not aware of this till after the surgery. I later found out I would have pain for possible up to 6 weeks on this different surgery. After a week of much more pain they refused to give me any more medication unless I came back to the office to see the doctor. This after they told me I would be having up to 6 weeks of pain. I visited Dr. Sudduth after hurting my back in a car accident. After having X-rays done, he did the examination. At the conclusion the nurse administered an anti-inflammatory injection. However, he did not give me a prescription for anti-inflammatory tablets or a muscle relaxer, as is standard care. He gave me a prescription for physical therapy.... I asked the nurse if he had forgotten to give me a prescription for the tablets I needed, and she said to "call Monday if I was still in pain," and that they would call in the prescription for me. I was in severe pain all weekend (the injections did nothing), and I called the nurse Monday morning to ask for a prescription for a muscle relaxer. The nurse refused to have a prescription called in and said that Dr. Sudduth does not fill "narcotic" prescriptions over the phone. Why, then, did they let me leave the following Friday without giving me the tablets that I needed? And when did a muscle relaxer become a "narcotic"? PLEASE, for your own sake, don't go this clinic! They are just going to waste your time. I have had back injuries before and the standard of care was to prescribe PT, an anti-inflammatory, and a muscle relaxer. Never have I encountered such minimalistic care and rude nurses. read more

Great professional place to go to for your orthopedic problems. I have always had prompt courteous service and professional care. They seem to practice modern medicine, and while it has not always been what I expected, it turned out well for me in the end. That's why I keep going back. My primary care physician sends most of his patients to them and I see why. Their electronic record system is somewhat cumbersome and takes a little time for each visit but I was told that most physician practices have to do this in order to comply with government regulations. 1 star is too many. My primary physician set up an appointment for me at Southlake Orthopaedics for 2:45 today. No one from Southlake Orthopaedics attempted to contact me prior to my appointment today to confirm the time with me, but I knew the time my primary had set up so I didn't think anything of it. Naturally, I looked up this location prior to the appointment, so I was aware of the long wait times described by former patients. Since I knew this would be the case, I decided I would show up to my appointment 15-20 minutes early so I might not have to wait as long. I arrived at 2:20, and did not know who my doctor was so I went to the first reception desk I could find and asked them which doctor I was to be seeing that day. They directed me to the other reception desk, where the lady manning the counter was helping a gentleman fill out his paperwork. I was happy to wait, because I was early anyway. By the time the other receptionist behind the desk noticed me standing there and asked if she could help me, it was about 2:30. I was then informed my appointment was at 2:15, I was 15 minutes late, and I would have to set up another appointment because they have a "strict 15 minute no show policy." Based on the other reviews I see here, this is shocking to me. Never mind that I wouldn't have been late if they had called to confirm my appointment a week or even a day before. Never mind that I would have been within this 15 minute window if they had an attentive receptionist staff. But a doctor's office where they make people wait for hours while attempting to enforce a 15 minute late policy? It's amazing they are in business at all. There are other options available. Take your money somewhere else. Don't give it to people who act like they're entitled to your business. read more

I'm VERY disappointed with the care I rec'd from Dr. Craig & staff! While undergoing a ct with contrast at their office the nurse hit the median nerve in my arm 2 times. The next day I called back up there & told them my hand was burning/aching/stinging. I was told there wasn't any dye in my system. I waited another couple weeks & still in tremendous pain. I went up there & told them I wanted someone to come out & look at my hand because it hurts very badly. She called to back & spoke with the nurse. The nurse said she might have hit a nerve & I needed to see Dr. Craig. They made me an appt a couple of weeks later. When I signed in the tablet asked for my copay. I told nurse I shouldn't have to pay a copay for something that's NOT my fault. She said ok. I was called to back. Dr. Craig examined & said he was sorry. He orderd Xray & MRI & let room. His nurse came in and handed me paperwork & said I would be getting a call to set up appt. I told her my insurance has a $300 copay & I'm NOT paying it because they did something wrong. She just looked at me. I left. Nobody ever called. I went to a Neurologist at Brookwood. He ordered a nerve conduction test. The results came back that I have Carpal Tunnel due to pressure on Median Nerve. I'm still getting a $68.00 bill from Southlake Orthopaedics every month. I would NOT recommend them to anyone!!!! Now I'm having to pay another dr. to fix what they messed up. I had NEVER had any problems with my hand/arm before his nurse hit the median nerve in my arm! read more
