I used to be a big library person when I was younger. Raising kids and working full time in a…read moredemanding job meant that me time was at a premium and my love of reading was temporarily set aside. When I relocated to Colleyville and went to vote in person, on a whim I went downstairs and got a new library card on the spot. They laughingly told me that new users often ticked up during election season for them. Now, the best parts. The only portal makes it super easy to request books, and I can swing by the handy dandy drive thru and pick up during library hours. They have a wonderful service where you can submit a request for a list of recommended books just for you based on what you share about your interests, favorite authors etc. I'm on my third list and Kara has nailed it every time. I've found some great new authors and enjoyed some books I never would have found otherwise. Just another reason living in Colleyville is pretty awesome.

The Colleyville Library is an outstanding library. They put on great events throughout the year,…read moreespecially in the summer. Their storytimes are so fun for littles. Most of the storytimes are not drop in - You have to register in advance and commit to an 8 week session. I think this results in a higher quality storytime - the librarians get to know your kids, they have crafts and other fun aspects to the storytime, and it's never overcrowded. Many other events offered do not require registration. The kids play area is the best I've seen at a library. There is so much to do! My kids all still love playing there, and will happily move from table to table building and playing for HOURS (even the older ones!). I do think, since this is a small library, you really have to utilize the online hold system if you want to pick out specific books. Especially when it comes to popular kid's books, it's unlikely that you're going to walk into the library and find it on the shelf. That's ok with me - the hold system saves me time because I reserve it online, the library tells me when it's been turned in and sets it aside, and I swing by the drive through to pick it up. Through the interlibrary loan system, you can get *almost* any book or movie you want, even if the Colleyville Library doesn't have it. I utilize the interlibrary loans regularly and have only ever requested ONE book that the library wasn't able to procure for me. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. Two negatives I'd point out: 1. The new "no late fees" policy. Because there are no longer late fees, it's essentially "choose your own due date!" and the result is very long wait times for some book series. When I scroll through my list of holds, more than half the books are often overdue. The library should be collecting fines for this to encourage on time return of books and use the money to purchase duplicate copies of books in popular kids series. 2. Holds are capped at 20 books. This isn't really an issue during the school year, but during the summer when more kids are checking out books, you pretty much have to wait for every book that comes to mind. With 8 people in our house, we reach 20 holds very quickly. I'd prefer if they did away with the 20 book hold limit. Those negatives aside, this library has my heart! We are here at least a couple times a week picking up books and I am immensely grateful for the way the library has enabled me to foster a love of reading in my kids. We LOVE the Colleyville Library!!!

That said, I REALLY enjoy the Roanoke Library. My wife and I moved to Roanoke in July 2011, and I kind of stumbled across this little gem. Here's a summary: - It's small. Cozy, but not too small - every time I go, there's only one or two patrons in the whole place. - Free Wifi. A lot quieter to study/work here than Starbucks. - They carry fairly new items (in my category of interests, anyway). I managed to secure the Steve Jobs biography on hold, within a few weeks of publication. Beats spending the money on Kindle. - A part of the TexShare program, which allows me to borrow books from other libraries after being a local cardholder for 6 months. - Good movie selection, and blu-rays. Current stuff, stuff I would think would be "too new" for the library. Also, the week-long policy for movies is a plus. - Decent online holding and renewal system. I can check out a book for 2 weeks, but renew it up to 5 times online. Wow! That's cool. All in all, this childhood place of memory has re-entered my list of favorite places - good resources, friendly staff, and a quiet environment.

The management of the library system seems to be doing some great new things. Each time I go in, I am able to find new books that are current and are of interest to me. There are a lot of computer terminals for those individuals looking to gain access to the internet. The new library also has some great work stations with power at each station in the center of the table. This is a very comfortable library now and a strong library system for such a small little community.

While the NRH Library isn't as modern and expansive as some libraries in larger cities like Dallas or Austin, there's a simple beauty in its organization, cleanliness, and welcoming/helpful staff. The staff are always welcoming and helpful in finding or directing you towards the book you're searching for. Their websites is one of the easier library sites to navigate, they include an event schedule separated into sections for adults, teens, and children--which is a small but helpful feature. They have a drive-thru type of book drop off, so you don't have to physically walk into the library to drop off your library books. They even host the Mid-Cities Teen Book Festival which features various events along with a free lunch that our entire family looks forward to each year! The MakerSpace is an area for arts and crafts and other events for teens and kids, they have Study Rooms for studying, and occassional book sales. It's also close by the NYTEX Centre (ice skating/hockey) and the NRH Centre (arts and recreation) which is very convenient! Highly recommend this library.

If you haven't been in the past few years, B&N started a loyalty program in 2023 to make its prices more competitive. For free, you can earn "stamps" that result in discounts (currently $5 off for every 10 stamps earned), and for a reasonable yearly fee you can upgrade to be a Premium member and earn 10% off everything every day. As an avid reader with a family of readers, it is totally worth it, and (do the math!) usually cheaper than competitors (*always* cheaper when I'm reading more obscure stuff).
