You would think it's very small inside, but actually it's decent size (surprised me). The staff is very friendly and attentive. Portions are large and the prices are reasonable. Free popcorn to start - woot ! :) I had the Philly chicken sandwich, Chicago style. Never heard of Chicago style before, I believe they told me that it included lettuce and tomatoes, which was exactly the way I wanted. It was pretty good, had a marinade on it that was a little odd, but I liked it. Other family members had the fish - which is beer battered. Some loved that, some preferred a thinner coating. They have a large menu, and it's nice to support this local business. (They have a bar and pool table as well).

I'm glad I finally did to check this place of my to try list. From the outside, it looks like a typical hole-in-the-wall bar in the Johnstown area. I had no idea where parking was because every time I drove past here I would be doing it at a pace I couldn't see. I was happy to see that there was ample parking behind the street facing building. Entry from the parking lot takes you up stairs or a zig-zagging ramp that looks fairly new. This area is also connected to an outdoor seating area, can't really call it a patio. Or, you can enter from outside and take the stairs up into dining room. This is a seat yourself establishment. Once you are seated, you are greeted and given menus. What an extensive menu it is. The amount of items on the menu, if you haven't been here before, can be daunting. It took me a few minutes to just give it a once over. When the server came back around to take our drink order she asked if we needed a few more minutes, yes, we did. When she returned I was ready to go. I ordered the Pickle Chips as my appetizer and the Howler as my main. The Pickle Chips were served with a side of ranch for dipping and they were amazing. Perfectly coated, not too much and not too little. Dipping in the ranch cooled them down just enough to be enjoyable. Now, the Howler, is kind of an experience. The Howler is one of their signature burgers. Half-pound patty cooked to your liking. The set toppings on this burger is bacon, choice of cheese (American Cheddar, Swiss, Provolone, or Pepper Jack), meat sauce, and a fried egg. You also can choose to add lettuce tomato onion and pickle. For mine, I went American for the cheese, lettuce, onion and pickle. There really wasn't any need for condiments as there was already so much on the burger to give it flavor. It almost comes off as either a breakfast burger or a chili cheese burger. Although I did as for medium, they overcooked it a bit. What was a nice addition here was the side. You can go with the traditional fries or go for one of many that don't seem to have an upcharge to it. Tater tots, slaw, applesauce, or nachos and one item for an upcharge, onion rings. I went with tater tots. Overall, this was an enjoyable meal. Our service was impeccable. Atmosphere was lively.

My brother and I were allowed to check in a little early, since they knew we were arriving ahead of "the wave" on a busy weekend. Our rooms were spacious and clean. Every one of the staff was friendly and helpful, but I have to give an extra thank you to Michael Christie, who was so extra helpful when I forgot a large bag of leftovers I wanted to take home, leaving it on a bench outside. Someone brought it to the front desk, and it was set aside rather than being thrown away. Michael assured me it would be there when I called, frantic that I had lost my saved lunches for the next few days. Thank you for being extra helpful, Michael!

We stopped for lunch at a place that was a regular fir the 6 months that I lived in Johnstown, PA. The Haven sits across the street from the old Atlantic Broadband call center in Southmont and is known for their gargantuan sandwiches, like their rueben that's as big as a takeout box. But you know what we were there for... Brrrrgrrrs! I got the Bacon bluecheese swiss burger and Dana ordered up the carolina burger (hold the carolina - meaning no bbq sauce or cheese) but with double coleslaw. The Haven gets it right! Just like I remember! The burger patties are seasoned and cooked just right, laying on the perfectly soft bun. the blue cheese "sauce" on mine mixes with the swiss cheese to make the most interestingly awesome bitter and stinky mix then picked up by the smokey crisp bacon. The only description i got from Dana was "YUM!" another winner of a burger place!

Only in Johnstown, Pa. would this happen…read more.. My Mom had passed away and to make a long story short, it took weeks to get her ashes, because of an ordered autopsy, even though the autopsy and cremation was performed in Johnstown. The weeks were dreadful for the entire family and once we got the remains and were able to bury my mother it was a bit of a relief. Having the church service certainly helped as well. Many went back over to the cemetery, prayed and said our goodbyes with flowers and then we went back to my mother's house. My good natured and fun loving sister in law piped up, "let's go to the American Legion" Some jumped at the idea, others like myself said, nah and she said " Mom wanted us to celebrate, not sit here bumming out." I didn't want to be a party pooper so I agreed and it was right down the street. I said okay, I will go for one. ha ha ha ha ha! My father was a member here for years and we all used to go to the annual picnics and my brothers belonged, so we were pretty well welcomed and everyone shared with their sympathy's in the loss of Mom and Gram and bought us drinks! I ordered a Chardonnay and they laughed hysterically and offered me some kind of wine from a gallon jug. I passed and had a vodka and squirt when they couldn't make me a margarita either. The room has a large bar and a lounge area that is half the size, the rest of the area has a pool table and a free popcorn machine! Hello, I forgive you for your wine and cocktail selection. They also had a help yourself hot dog station where you were trusted to take your fifty cents to the bar. Did I say that I was only going to have one? Silly me, this is fun and forgetting all about my woes was nice. I shot pool with my brothers, did shots of tequila with my nieces and sister in laws, ate a couple of dogs and had lots of free popcorn. American Legions do allow smoking so be prepared for that and the drinks are priced incredibly low. After this evening I was surprised to drive by the legion at nine or ten in the morning and see the parking lot fairly full with regulars there having their "breakfast" drink! We laughed, shared stories and cried. It was great to spend time like this together with my brothers and their families. I'm so glad that I went. .
