I know - 5 stars? ABSOLUTELY. The staff is friendly, a proper good morning to every customer through the door. The entire restaurant is clean, spotless even. No dust on the ceiling tiles or vents, no crud in any corners, stainless steel shining clean, hood vents in the kitchen are even spotless. My meal was prepared quickly, came out nicely presented; hot food hot and cold food cold. Quality ingredients cooked perfectly. I love a good diner. A friend and I ended up here after being disappointed and sent away from Wiley Gunters because they weren't serving brunch. I had an omelette with tomato, onion, bacon and swiss. It came with toast and home fries; all pretty tasty. The bacon was thick cut and smoky and all the ingredients were fresh. My fiancé and I have been avid fans of the southside dinner even when it was big mattys across the street. We try to come here at least once a weekend (if not twice). Nick runs this place and is the nicest and most competent manager I have seen. He always goes out of his way to say hi even when the place is super packed (which is most weekends) The food is great, the service is friendly, and as other reviewers have stated the place is super clean! Additionally, as a pet owner we were super excited when they recently added in a few outside tables! It seems like your typical dinner but the food is so much better than that! Not sure how much should penalize them for location in yelp being in their old place when they were Matty. Not sure when they moved but annoying when go someplace and location is wrong. Yelp lets one move it and I actually put in request so dot is in proper place. New place is more modern and open than what I saw in window of old place which still had chairs and sign in the building. Food was good though not great. Not a fan of the little smucker breakfast syrup. I know the stuff get when they pour it into 1 ounce thing or have syrup dispenser is no better. Waffle cooked well though tasted no different than what you get at a Hampton inn. Bacon well cooked as crisp and not too greasy. Service if anything was over attentive as asked every 2 minutes if okay. This is a decent diner in federal hill. Stopped in for lunch and had the open face roast beef meal. Food here is a little bland, but service is good. My coworker had a chicken cheese steak and said it was amazing, so maybe I just need to find the right thing on the menu. I went with my coworker for lunch. We both ordered the codfish cake platter. After waiting about 20 minutes, the waitress came over and informed us that they were out of codfish cakes. So, my coworker ordered macaroni and cheese and a garden salad. I ordered the onion rings. When the waitress brought out the salad it consisted of lettuce, onion and cheese. The onion rings were just okay (I mean, how hard is it to make onion rings?). The macaroni and cheese was perhaps the worst I've ever seen. It was more like cheese whiz soup with noodles floating in it. On a positive note, upon seeing how disappointed we were with the salad and the macaroni and cheese, the waitress took it off the bill. I can say that this is my first and likely my last trip to Big Matty's. My two stars is only because the waitress was nice enough not to charge us for the slop she served up. Today was my first time going to the dinner, it was a great experience. When we got there at 9:30am Sunday morning they were full already. Me and my guest were going to leave but the hostess talked us into staying and she got us a both 7 minutes later. Because they were busy I knew it would take them a little while to serve us; I was wrong. 4 minutes later they were taking care of us. Stacey was our waitress and oh was she awesome. She was pleasant, kind and very attentive. The food was hot and perfect in every way. HINT: Try the Chesapeake Benedict. Absolutely love this place! The portions are big, the food always tastes great, and the staff are so nice (baltimore charm). My family lives nearby and this is the go to place for breakfast or brunch. It's in a strip mall but there's so much parking and it looks new and fresh inside. I can't speak more highly about it. The bacon is delicious, pancakes are delectable, and the corned beef hash is out of this world. Ravens players always come in too because it's truly the best around. Great restaurant! I'm excited to go back! We came in on a busy lunch, and got seated right away. Service was fantastic, despite being busy the servers were right there to help us, filling drinks and bringing napkins immediately when we needed them. The food itself was amazing, reasonably priced with big portions and very good. We all ordered from the lunch menu, but i'm definitely trying the breakfast next time we go! I saw some breakfast plates go by and they looked pretty! At the end of the service, the owner came up to us and asked how it was, chatted a bit. Been going to Southside Diner since they opened. Great diner in Locus Point serving classic "diner" food. For breakfast, try the pipeline it will not disappoint. Always friendly service. Placed is usually busy on weekends but wait time is never more than 10 minutes. Love the bar seating too. read more

Love this place. Awesome food and service every time that I've visited. Can get pretty busy weekend mornings and seem crowded, but have no fear. They turn tables quickly and the food is definitely worth the short wait. As for the food, I've actually only gone there for breakfast so I can't speak on the rest of the menu. Everything I've had, which is pretty much everything on the breakfast menu, has been amazing. My personal recommendation is the pipeline because of deliciousness and incredible portions. I'm giving this place five stars because it knows what it is, and does it well. If you want classic diner fare with big portions for a great price then you will love southside. The staff is always attentive and great about refilling my coffee an unhealthy amount of times which I really appreciate, and the spartan omelette with gyro meat and feta cheese is amazing. If you're feeling hungover, or super hungry, or just want good comfort food in south Baltimore you will get more bang for your buck here than anywhere else. Is it Miss Shirley's? The diner theme is open and friendly. Some waitresses are nice others are poker faced. The food is good but the price is too high. When did eating at a diner or cafe become like eating at a fine dining restaurant. The price for comfort food shouldn't be so high. I had a roast turkey platter which was really good. Came here with my family for late breakfast/brunch on a detour from Washington to New York.Ordered the eggs Benedict which was ok- only ate one half.This was the first time i had ever had eggs Benedict so unsure of how good it should have been. My husband had the omelette with mushrooms and Swiss. Omelette was ok. The French fries and home fries were great. We were seated fairly quick- which was a plus. We were still in middle of eating when our waitress brought us our check which we didn't ask for. Apparently that's standard. Maybe I'm used to New York where you only get the check when asked for it. That way you don't feel rushed to leave (even though there was no one by the door waiting to be seated). I haven't had another breakfast delivered where the eggs are still cooked perfectly when they arrive. Also, best bacon, imo, that I've had in Baltimore so far. I love the home fries and I get them without the onions and they're still really good. I've also had the biscuits and gravy and they are good, not great, but still pretty decent. Far from your usual strip-mall diner. So good I ate here three nights in a row. Ambiance: Nothing special. Somewhat small, noisy, friendly feeling. Plenty of parking in shopping center lot. Service: Some of the friendliest and most attentive waitresses I've ever encountered. All three nights I had a different waitress but was treated like a long-lost friend by each of them. Just a bit of background here. I've been rooting for this place since it was Rallo's. It's near my house, and I really want a great diner near my house. I'm obsessed with Diners, not quite Bill-Griffith-Zippy-the-Pinhead obsessed, but still obsessed. Mostly because I'm too lazy to cook. Where were we? So before it was bought by Big Matty, the place was really run by the mean women of South Baltimore. They were even 'playing up' the mean South Baltimore woman thing, which was kind of cool because it reminded me of home. There was a woman named Marge who literally used to throw dishes at you. I used to take friends there just they could experience the whole deal. It helped if you didn't look around because the place was pretty filthy. I never worked up the nerve to go to the restroom. Then Big Matty bought the place and I let myself get my hopes up. I was a little worried because the place was only shut down for about a week, and there wasn't a lot of renovation and/or menu re-tooling going on. I did hope that he would at least by a broom and a mop. I went back the first weekend I was too lazy to walk to Spoons. He had cleaned the place up and changed some of the decor a bit. Maybe a few of the old pictures of Schaefer were taken down and replaced by kitchy signs, and he bought a couple of flat screen TVs. So good news is that he's really whipped the wait staff into shape. They're prompt and responsive, and they actually look around to see if you need a coffee refill. Try to get that kind of attention from the hipsters at Golden West. They've stopped being mean too. Once I walked in and a waitress gave me an enthusiastic "Hi Hon! How are you this morning?" Having heard the greeting, Marge looked up from the other end of the bar and advised, "Don't force it!" That was my favorite moment ever. The food has gotten a bit better, but not much. They seem to have learned how to cook bacon. It's not burnt or overcooked and it's pretty consistent. That's almost enough for me. If you're going to dine at Big Matty's here's some advice: 1. Stick to the basics and order the simple breakfast stuff. 2. Don't expect rosemary, or any other herbs in your breakfast potatoes. If you want that, walk to Spoons. 3. Be ok with coffee that tastes like water. If you happen to be Big Matty, here's some advice. I'm an expert on running a restaurant since I've watched a season and a half of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares: 1. Think about reupholsering the booths. I'm not sure if that's just old age or residual Rallo's dirt on the carpeting at the bottom of the booths and I'm tired of thinking about it. 2. Get some better coffee. I'm serious about this one. You could work out a deal with Zeke's Coffee in Baltimore, and put a big-ass sign in the window that you're now serving Zekes coffee. Since you have a parking lot, you could even draw some people away from the Starbucks in the morning. Everyone would rather support your business than the evil corporate giant, so meet us half-way on this one. 3. Think about upgrading a few ingredients. I would like smoked applewood bacon. Also how about getting some fresh strawberries and/or blueberries once in a while and throwing them on top of the pancakes? That would be really nice. 4. Keep up the good work, service is really top notch.The first time I see a fresh blueberry on the menu I'll bump up my rating. That's all for now. If this place gets too good I won't be able to roll out of bed at 10:30 on a Sunday and get a seat at the bar. read more

Wow. The worst :( Waited over an hour at our table with no update from the waitress as to what was going on. Saw a few other people very angrily walk out. Asked the waitress about our order and she had no info. Then the owner later said he didn't think our order was even back there. Eventually we walked out too.
