I really liked going to this YMCA especially since this location has an indoor heated pool and hot tub, great for winters. However, the past few times that I have been here, the hot tub has been closed off and I also ended up getting an ear infection for the first time :( Makes me question the hygiene and sanitization practices at this pool. They even have painters come in during pool hours so the entire enclosed space is filled with paint smell and fumes. read more

Even though it's okay here, I'd still recommend this YMCA. Just a few odd quirks here and some undesirable effects. First off the parking here is a challenge. Spaces are too small, and you can guarantee your car getting dinged. Mine already has, and I was even in the car when she did it, I confronted her and she just gave me a nasty look and did not apologize. I had to leave it at that since she had a small child with her, but she apparently didn't give AF. I've noticed similar behaviors with other patrons who park there. I use the pool here - it's outside. Most of the inside of this place is carpeted, which is quite odd, when you come in from the pool or the spa or indoor pool you walk on carpet and the carpet gets drenched. Not good. I detest that you have to walk all the way through various hallways and by the gym and the other pool to get to the locker room if you're coming / going to the outside pool. Kinda feels like you're at a hotel and having to walk down the carpeted hallway bypassing several rooms / areas in your swimsuit, or if you're wet with a towel. The indoor pool is fine, but when they hold those Zumba courses there - that Zumba instructor is - how can I saw this - irritating to say the least. She has forced a rule - you cannot turn on the jacuzzi jets during her classes because it's too loud and they cannot hear or talk to each other. This has been a bothersome rule for years now, and many of us have complained, yet this Zumba instructor wins all the time. I get it when you have a full pool of people, but some of her Zumba classes have only 4-6 people attending, they take over the whole indoor pool, she blasts the music so damn loud it's like you're at a club, and they don't talk to each other anyway so WTF?? They could use the other half of the pool (away from the jacuzzi) since there's only 6 of them, so everyone can use the facilities, but after complaining about this - I was rejected. I was also informed by several other members - they have complained too but have also been rejected. It's irritating AF and it's not respectful when there is no compromise. The basketball court is smaller here. The weight room is open and carpeted. The showers are okay, the bathrooms at times could be cleaner, the men's locker room is on the smaller side and quite compacted for space. The outside pool - it's heated during the winter time and it's open all year round. Swam the other day - it was 75 degrees outside temps and pool was 88 degrees, it was nice. But once you get out of the pool - yikes. But it's a nice change of pace here. They just updated the deck space around the pool. Service here has always been nice. Never had a bad experience with the any of them, all very responsive and answer my questions and good customer service. I don't frequent here as much but will go sometimes if it's convenient for my schedule. Can we just work out the Zumba lady and jacuzzi jets please? read more

I absolutely love this YMCA. I homeschooled my children for many years and the YMCA gave me a great refuge to also take care of myself to get a quick workout while my children enjoyed their friendly childcare. I now teach my sons about the benefits of weight training and my oldest even works here as a lifeguard. VERY RUDE BRANCH MANAGER!!!!! Came to this place on 5/31/23 told staff that I was a volunteer coach and they charged me $10 for a 6 year old to shoot ball for 30 minutes. I showed proof and was looked at like I was crazy. The YMCA is a scam, they charge a upward of $160.00 per sport per kid and need Volunteer coaches. How bout you pay volunteers for their time? This league is for beginners, nagging parents and horrible refs. This is a non competitive league and the kids won't learn fundamentals. I have been going here for 8 years. The only reason I still keep coming here is their prices are more reasonable than some of the other fitness centers. However, you get what you pay for. Let's breakdown some of my key gripes about this place. 1. Parking: It's horrible. When I set out for a workout, my goal is to get that endorphin rush at the end. But when the lack of parking gets my blood pressure up, no amount of exercise is going to help. With the SUVs and minivans taking up all of the places, parking is just impossible. I haven't dared go here between 5-7pm (as I can only imagine what the situation would be like) but did end up going between 8-10am a few times and it caused me extreme amounts of stress. 2. Workout area: Let's dispense with what's good first. I like the number of treadmills and ellipticals they have. Never have had to wait for one (maybe that's also a function of how I time my workouts but I will give them props anyway). The rest is all downhill though 2a: The teenagers on family accounts who gather around discussing their latest social media feeds while hogging both the workout benches and the free weights. This is more a fault in parenting than the Y's fault but more free weights would mitigate this issue. Then there's the leg curling machine hoarders who watch an entire movie without budging from the machine. 2b. They recently "upgraded" some weight machines. Some upgrade! For example, there used to be a machine that could be used for both the 'reverse fly' and the 'pectoral fly' but now that's been broken down into 2 machines hogging more space. Plus, the 'reverse fly' machine no longer has grip bars. It is very unnatural to perform this exercise without grip bars. They also introduced an extra 'lat' machine when there was already one existing. Poor choices. 2c. Several lockers are broken. C'mon now, you maybe cheaper than other places but that $95 a month you aren't that cheap to not be able to upgrade the lockers. 3. Swim lessons: They have decent swim lessons for early beginners but keep advertising their swim lessons as if they are the best in town. Not so. When I looked into swim lessons for my older (8-10 years) kids to improve stroke mechanics there was nothing on offer. You are better off going with a specialized swim school. Overall, I am increasingly beginning to feel I am not getting value for my money here. One of these days I may just switch read more

I had belonged to a Y in Illinois which was awesome. Huge indoor track, lots of brand new machines, towels to use, disinfecting spray at EVERY machine. So of course continuing at the Y when I moved to Austin was a no brainier. However I feel this Y is really lacking in many areas. The indoor track feels very small compared to the Y I had been in. Often there are children playing on the track interrupting those who seriously want to walk or jog. I understand the concept of the YMCA is all about family, however when a dad and his eight-year-old kid are kicking the ball around the track it really impacts those wanting to exercise. The machines in the weight room seem very dated and there is not one bottle of disinfectant to be found anywhere, despite signs everywhere of "please wipe down your machine". Yes, there are the wet wipes you can pull out of the dispenser but that is a real pain to have to go get one after every machine use! Lastly, the location of this Y is an absolute nightmare. Trying to get out onto the frontage road at any time of the day, especially rush hour, it's near impossible! The parking lot is very small and overflow parking is across the street in a very gravely Rocky lot that belongs to a tire company. read more

I've been a member of the YMCA since 1993. I used to come to this location to swim; but starting in July 2019 someone started vandalizing my car in the parking lot of the day care center just east of the main parking lot--there is almost never any parking in the main parking lot. The first time they let the air out of my rear passenger tire. This cost me $100 to replace. But the second time they loosened all five bolts on my front driver's side wheel (the mechanic who repaired my wheel assured me that all five bolts never come loose all on their own). It cost me $300 to repair it. The good news? The wheel didn't fly off while I was driving on Mopac. The bad news? If that front wheel had come off while I was driving, at 70 mph, it might have bounced over the median and struck an oncoming car, also going 70 mph in the opposite direction: a wheel flying impacting a car at 140 mph--a cannonball that could have penetrated a windshield and killed people, even in the back seat of their car. I consulted the police, a district judge (I'm a retired attorney), and lawyers who specialize in criminal/psychiatrically-disabled defendants. They told me these things: 1) Whoever did it is a criminal; 2) Whoever did it is dangerous; 3) Whoever did it probably has a criminal record or has been imprisoned before, or has been psychiatrically detained by the law; 4) Whoever did it will probably do it again; and 5) Whoever did it is probably still there. I still belong to the Y, but I will not go to this location anymore. In fairness to the Y I did not report this to them: I just left. read more

Staff is very friendly and helpful. Classes are hit and miss for quality and some of the instructors are outstanding. Three stars related to cleanliness of the indoor and outdoor showers and spotty functionality of the women's outdoor restroom showers. Inconsistently clean, oftentimes only one of the outdoor showers works and the sewer gases coming from the indoor womens showers are overwhelming. Gym equipment station cleaning equipment (spray disinfectant) was removed several months ago. Membership costs are reasonable enough for a gym, classes and outdoor pool but the lack of cleanliness has sent me to other locations or just going for a quick rinse off after a swim- no lingering. I'm injured and need to use the pool for exercise right now. It's not filthy and it could be improved. Again, great staff- always welcoming and helpful. read more

All the Austin YMCA's are great places to work out and a great place to do activities as a family. The Southwest branch has a great 6 lane heated lap pool outside. Early in the morning are friendly staff and instructors. I love going to the 5:35am cycle classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wonderful instructors. Parking at the Southwest branch is not as bad as Townlake. There are more classes offered at Townlake, but the Southwest the class size is just perfect and you get a lot of one-on-one instruction from the instructors. Joined recently, and it's been great. Convenient location, clean facilities, and friendly staff. My only upset is that for the past few days they have been playing Fox News on one of the televisions. It wouldn't be so bad if I could avoid it, but it's a small gym and if I want to do cardio, there it is staring me in the face. I brought it up to the front desk and they said other people had complained, so I guess it's good to know I'm not alone. They also said there was no way to change it, and that they didn't even have the remote available to them. I'm not sure who made this change, but please reconsider. We've been so apprehensive leaving our pandemic baby with anyone. His first experience being watched by anyone besides family was here. I was in this YMCA for2 hours Sunday. The whole time Fox News was on the TV in the common area. I couldn't get away from it. Needless to say, it was not a stress free day. Maybe a less biased news station would have been better. There was an old white haired man in business clothes sitting in front of it the whole time. It was very loud. I love this YMCA. My family has been a meme we for years and years! When Covid happened we were disappointed but understanding when they closed up for awhile and overjoyed when it opened back up! The staff is awesome and friendly and they're great about making sure everything stays safe! My one complaint is which the hours. 8:00am to 7:00pm. So basically when a lot of people are in school or at work. Why can't they open at an earlier time? I mean they used to open at 5:00am y'all. I can't go to the gym anymore because they open too late and close too early. I'm not a big complainer but would 6:30am be awful? I would literally be in there every single day with my brother if that were the case! read more

I have been debating for over a year on joining the Y. I hesitated since I really did not want to pay for a gym membership, but I discovered that my employer, PAREXEL (the best employer in the world) offers a gym benefit of $150/year and that encouraged me to make the move to join the Y. Plus I can pay for my membership with my Health Saving Account! So, I am saving mega-bucks! I am a person who deplores children. Why? Because "some" parents let the children run around like wild dogs in the summer and spring break and fail to get them involved in fruitful and enriching activities. The Y has youth/children programs and I love it! Why? Even though a person has to pay for the programs, the Y has financial assistance programs so REGARDLESS of your financial situation your child can participate. No excuses parents. Have your child or children release some of that energy at the Y. The same goes for memberships. If you are not able to afford their low cost of membership, there is financial assistance. That is fantastic as there goes that excuse. Now for the actual facility in Southwest Austin. There is an indoor/outdoor pool. I think the outdoor pool is a lap pool. The cardio equipment is great (treadmills, bikes, elliptical, etc.), weight area, indoor track, fitness classes including Body Pump (Oh yeah!) and Spinning Classes. After much thought and deliberation I decided to become a contributor to the Y, since I hate children without viable means for their bountiful energy, and the Y is at least making an effort to provide outlets for the little devils so they are not driving me nuts in the summer and weekends. I can't say enough about this gym. If i could give this a 6 star i would. I love the Town Lake Y because it of the architecture design and all the lighting it offers, however this Southwest branch is really hard to beat overall. First i have to say that they have probably one of the nicest outdoor pools around and a huge playing area to go along with it, neither which the downtown offers. And not to mention a computer lab and an indoor track also neither which the downtown location offers. But without getting into comparisons this gym is really great, especially once they address the parking issue with offering additional parking options as well as parking traffic guides, yes Y is so committed to addressing members concerns and issues that they have at least 2 people during the peak hours controlling the parking helping people find empty spaces, LOL. How can you not love that? The best thing about this gym is the second level of this gym which i recently found out about. They basically have another whole gym up there, so many rooms for all sort of different classes, and their second workout area with dumbbells, exercise balls, stationary bikes, and about 8 or so kinesis machine, yes '8', kinesis machine's. And the best think it is very secluded and a great place to work out if you just want to focus and get away from the crowd. It is great, i can't say enough good things about this place. read more

This YMCA location happens to be seconds away from where I am staying right now which makes my life so easy! To me the YMCA isn't just a gym and that's why I love it so much. The YMCA is a family oriented Christian based origination that really practices what they preach. This location has tons of classes offered, children programs, indoor and out door pools, a rebar center, a lifting center, and much more! The way this place is laid out makes all the difference in the world. It's easily accessible for anyone wanting to come workout. I have fallen in love with this place and all that it has to offer! Also, one thing that I should touch on is pricing. If you are a student they do a student membership of $36 a month no contract. Yeah I said it! NO contract!!! I love the outdoor pool., park. The childcare staff is so caring and sweet. They have fun on the preschool park. My kids always have fun. I like the class instructors. I like how the staff guides parking in busy hours. I do not like the impossible parking some days. I do not like how the child watch is limited an hour. I do not like how child watch will not change diapers. I do not like how you can't use the hot tub jets during the time aquatics fitness class is going on. This YMCA location is perfect for me! A staff member greeted me and asked if I were a member or would like a tour if we were interested and took us back right away! They had all the answers to all of my questions regarding classes and memberships and so on. The price isn't terrible if you're on a family membership just splitting the tab. I have gone at all different hours of the day and it have never been crowded where I couldn't workout! I have attended a few free classes that were awesome and met some really great people there too. I however do with they had a steam room and maybe slightly longer hours, but other than that I say it's a win and I'll continue to go! read more

I have been going to the Southwest YMCA for the last ten months, since I moved to Austin. The facility has up-to-date equipment, more classes than you can keep track of, and multiple areas for exercise. This YMCA has an indoor and outdoor pool, two large weight rooms, an indoor track, a basketball/volleyball court, children's play area, lounge area, and much more. Because I go at least three times a week, I have seen most of the staff at one time or the other and they are consistently friendly and helpful. Free classes are offered on a variety of topics and the monthly fees are reasonable. You are also able to apply for a reduction in the monthly fee if you have financial hardships. Equipment is maintained, and the facility is immaculate. I plan to be a member at this YMCA for years to come. read more

I started going to the YMCA 6 months or so ago and truly enjoy my time there. The facilities are very clean and the staff is super friendly. I generally go from around 6:30pm-8pm on week days. The parking lot can get a bit full during this time. I notice a big difference in attendance between the summer season and when school was in session. The good news is that most of the people there have their kids out in the pool. The cardio and weight equipment is always available even during these busy times. I've never had to wait for a machine. Everything seems to be in good working order other than the lone rowing machine which makes me a bit sad but I understand most people aren't interested in that particular machine so I let it slide. The cardio room has a nice wall of TV's to keep you entertained while you sweat. There is also a great spinning room that while there is no class you can use alone and put the TV on the channel of your choice! I can see that the child care is probably the crown jewel of the YMCA. I don't have kids quite yet but believe me, when I do they will be chillin' at the YMCA while I work out! The kids always seem happy to be there and having fun. There are often kids around the gym as well working out with their parents. It's just a very lovely family friendly place. My main/only complaint would be that the teachers for the group classes can be a bit disappointing. I've spent the past 2 years exclusively taking group classes vs. "working out" in a typical gym environment. So, I suppose my standards could be higher than the average person. I love Zumba but I went to one night time class and just couldn't deal with the teacher. She put way to many moves in to her songs and made it confusing for those not familiar with her routines. Zumba can be pretty simple if you stick to what the actual Zumba Fitness people are teaching. I wish they had more options of teachers for those evening Zumba classes in case the personality of the one constantly teaching doesn't quite fit with your taste. I've also taken a few spinning classes and find that I get a better workout in on my own. The RPM class plays awful techno music that made me want to walk out immediately. The Interval Cycling class was awesome once when a pregnant lady was filling in for the normal teacher. Wish I got her name because she was great and her music was on point. The regular teacher plays music that has a beat that in no way correlates to the speed you are cycling. I find that incredibly distracting after having taken spinning classes from great professional teachers that take the time to pick out music that actually pushes you to keep going. She has even run out of music at the end of class. I mean...you know how long the class is, how hard is it to pick out the music to fit that time period? I do it for my own workout on a regular basis! So, to sum things up: if you are looking to take inspiring classes this might not be the spot for you. If you want a good value for the money to use cardio and weight equipment and a great environment for your kids this IS the place for you! read more

I love all the things this location offers, lessons, private trainers, tons of equipment....but if you go at peak time, you will park on the street and walk half a mile. This place is a LIFESAVER. I bring my kiddos here daily! The childcare is excellent (they're all so sweet), the pool is so much fun, the new outdoor park is awesome, the staff is friendly, they offer a wide variety of classes, and have an overall welcoming space for everyone. Personal Training with Christine H. here has been great. I've had several trainers before (one even at the YMCA) and she's by far the best I've had. In the last year since working out with Christine I've lost 90 lbs. She's great at adapting the exercises to what I need or want to work on. She's been amazing to work with. read more

The gym is okay but most of the time the antibacterial wipes are out.I just found out I have ring worm on the back of my thigh and I never sit down on the benches without wiping it down and I always wash my hands before I leave the gym and when I get home I shower. So I feel like the staff aren't doing their part in sanitation. I don't want to pay to go to a filthy gym every day. read more

I joined with a family membership, but was given the wrong information about classes. When I went to one of the classes, no one even showed up. I assume this was a fluke, but upon talking to someone higher up I was informed that the class wouldn't even meet my needs. So, I had to cancel my membership. The facility is very nice, and not crowded. If they really did offer the classes I was interested in, I wouldn't have cancelled my membership. read more
