After sitting around with neck and back pain for a week I went to see Sandy at Spa on the Hill. I wasn't sure what to expect but she spent a full 60 minutes working on the exact spots that hurt. She even showed me a stretch to do on my own and gave me some tips to relieve the pain for when it comes back. I normally do not write a review but after my experience yesterday I thought I absolutely had to write a review. Yesterday I got a bikini wax after searching for years since my move to the area for a nice, clean and friendly spa. After searching on YELP, I was torn between Spa on the Hill and another establishment. After reading the reviews, I went ahead and booked my appointment with Arnetta at Spa On the Hill. I arrived early(as I do whenever I go to a place for the first time) and was greeted by the friendly and warm male receptionist(sorry I forgot his name). The atmosphere in this establishment was absolutely PEACEFUL and SERENE. Now the waxing part.... I warned Arnetta that it has been years since I had gotten my last bikini wax and she assured me that I would be just fine and it wasn't a problem. BOY WAS SHE RIGHT!!!! She really made me feel comfortable and seemed sincerely geniune which is always a PLUS. If you are looking for a first class establishment, this is the place. I adore this spa. I have been here for massages - my favorite is Jenelle, but everyone is excellent. The atmosphere is quiet, calm, and very welcoming. The rowhouse is like a little oasis! The option to schedule online is excellent. I have booked "spontaneous" massages on occasion because I checked the online scheduler and saw that there was availability. (It's a really nice feature when I'm trying to book from my desk!) Each time I have received a massage at Spa on the Hill, the masseuse sat down with me and discussed problem areas, preferences, massage history, etc. After the massage, I was given the opportunity to relax and/or shower and I received water, juice, cheese and crackers and a few sweets. I just had a body scrub there, and it was great. Nice atmosphere, great service, just a lovely experience. Very reasonably priced. I haven't found a good place for a body scrub since I left LA, and I will definitely be returning here. I had a therapeutic massage with Jannell yesterday and she is awesome! I told her the areas where I felt tense and she tore my back up (in a good way) and found knots all over. She took her time and did a great job, just firm enough pressure, but not too painful. The spa itself is in a great location for people on the Hill or nearby. It is a cute little house with different rooms for massages, etc. It is very tastefully decorated and clean, but you can tell that their main focus is the services, which is how it should be, I think. Everyone I've interacted with here has always been friendly and seemed genuinely interested in how they can be helpful or make your experience as positive as possible. I appreciate that you can book online, but everything else feels very personal. I had my first massage here with Silvia when I was about 7 months pregnant. It was an amazing massage and so carefully tailored to what my body was going through at that moment. I had my second massage here with Rudy, who was equally amazing and dealt with an entirely different set of issues post-pregnancy. Pregnant? Experiencing back pain? Don't come here! Spa on the Hill refused to schedule me for a simple 30 min back massage, and insisted I schedule the "prenatal" message which is more expensive and requires additional charges for special pillows. I strained a muscle in my lower back and wanted the massage to focus on that specifically; after a quick google search I found several places that would accommodate without the "prenatal" fees. read more

It is amazing what a good massage can do for one! I had Silvia and she gave me helpful tips to help me keep myself less tense ( apparently I had a whole bunch of knots and tension pretty much everywhere). At the end of the massage I was so relaxed I kinda wanted to just lie there and go to sleep! Best of all when I left I could feel the difference in my back just walking down the block. I bought an online deal for a bikini wax before a beach trip and was highly impressed. Not only was it the least painful wax, but she was very personable and great at her job! Arnetta is awesome. So awesome in fact that I was considering not writing a review because I don't want everyone in DC knowing how fantastic she is and rushing to have her work her magic, making it impossible to get an appointment with her! I went to her for my first full on brazillian wax, and was understandably nervous. The salon itself is very clean/saniatry- they clearly take that seriously. Armetta made made the actual waxing as painless as is possible, and is so professional and NICE that I was shocked that I found having a stranger smear hot wax all over my most private and sensitive bits no more awkward or weird than a haircut.. Seriously. I'm going to continue to have maintenence waxing done regularly by Arnetta (the best endorsement I think) and will definitely look to Spa on the Hill first for any other spa services I might need/want in the future. read more

The best facial everrrr... So, I attended Spa on the Hill Friday, February 13th. It was everything, but a nightmare!!! There wasn't anyone in the main reception area when I first entered, as I assumed everyone was busy. By the way, I loved the boutique like setting, very intimate and calming. Arnetta, then entered the reception area and greeted me and gave me the information sheet to complete since it was my first visit. Immediately following the completion of my paperwork, I was escorted to "My room." That was my first facial, and Arnetta set the bars high!!! It was very soothing, relaxing, and the facial massage was EVERYTHING!!! The next day, my skin was so clear, I was amazed! I was also able to expereince a body massage by Ms. Sylvia. She was great as well! Sylvia had expressed that she had 20+ years of expereince, and yes, it was evident. I usually like to be in peace while receiving a massage, but Sylvia was so personable and so sweet that I didn't mind. All in all, my experience at Spa on the Hill was everything I needed it to be. I wasn't planning to indulge myself with a prenatal massage until my husband's work cancelled our vacation and he insisted I treat myself to one. Boy am I glad he did! My pregnancy has been very easy so I didn't think I needed any special treatment, but the day after my first massage I realized that suddenly all my lower back pain was gone. I'd just accepted it as one of the normal adjustments I'd have to make during pregnancy, feeling slightly sore and tired at the end of an active day, but instead I felt easy and comfortable in a way I hadn't for months. I've gone two more times since then, about once every three weeks when the tension in my back has built up again and doesn't want to go away. Sylvia takes care of me every time and is a sweet and calming presence who I look forward to seeing. The style is a mix of typical massage and targeted acupressure which can feel a bit intense, but you can actually feel a tingling and releasing shoot down through the muscles, and I use the sensation as an opportunity to practice my labor breathing and focus on staying relaxed. The spa itself isn't your luxury hotel variety, but it is clean and mostly quiet and the receptionists have always been friendly. Highly recommend Sylvia and Spa on the Hill. read more

Signed up for Valentine's day couples massage. They promised a special package with champagne, fruit, select your oils and exceptional experience. Turned out to actually be water, a chocolate chip cookie and a sample size bottle of hand lotion. For $270 for two, the massages were not worth it and expectations that were set were not meet. Horrible experience. 1. Dirty carpet with stains on it. Didn't even want to take off my shoes. Felt unsanitary. 2. Charged me for a 60 minute massage when my friends and I got 45 minute ones, which seem to not even exist on their website.... 3. Charged my card on file and my credit card I presented to them so I was charged twice--totaling over $1,000. Went back to try to get my money back and they wouldn't give me anything back. Had to call and e-mail the owner several times and then had to get the bank involved b/c I wasn't refunded the correct amount.... 4. The massage was fair and they didn't even touch my neck, after I told her that was the only area I wanted her to focus on 5. My friend's mom had gotten her a gift certificate and they wouldn't validate it and said she had to use it next time she came back... 6. I was informed over the phone the "spa" was a "day spa" where my friends and I could all get treatments, drink champagne, and celebrate my friend's 30th but there was no where for everyone to even sit, besides the 2 chairs in the waiting area. 7. The staff was not accommodating when I voiced the issues I had. Awful place and a complete scam. Don't go here! If I could give this minus 5 stars I would; this place should not be in business. read more

Highly recommend Sharla for a prenatal massage! She was FANTASTIC! 90 minute of heaven, and for a really good price. I'm sure the other therapists are good too, but if you want a great therapist go with Sharla. I see some of the reviews about having a hard time scheduling on the phone, but I had no problem scheduling online. So I needed a Brazilian wax yayyyyy (not really) because my original go to lady is always on vacation ): .. I decided to check out spa on the hill. It was very nice inside, a bit too dark for me. (But I assume it was a very poorly lit scenery to keep you relaxed) I didn't like that I had to give my credit card information to them over the phone to book an appointment, I read on their website that they charge cancellation fees :/ I don't think that they're that busy to try and still make a profit off of you if you don't show up. but anywho Arnetta did my waxing which was absurdly painful, she attempted to comfort me but I could barely focus on our conversation because of the hot ass wax and the ripping sensation on my skin. They charged me $65 and ASKED for a tip. Who does that? I went home to a lot of hair patches on what was supposed to be a very hairless Brazilian. If she felt that I was not ready yet for the service she should have told me to come back in a few weeks. I feel like I got ripped off and I will not use their service ever again. read more

To begin, I really hate to give Arnetta a bad review. As a person, she could not have been any nicer to me from the beginning of my facial appointment to the end. She took great interest in my skincare routine and expectations of how I wanted my skin to look on my upcoming wedding day. She was professional, chatty at the right moments and generally a very sweet person. With that being said, I had a terrible experience with the actual facial I received. It had been a couple of months since my last facial, so I knew my pores would be extra clogged. What I didn't expect was how painful the process would be. I've had facials in the past, so I understand that the extraction process is uncomfortable and painful at times. The extraction process at Spa on the Hill literally brought me to tears. Most estheticians move around to different facial areas to minimize pain in one particular place, but Arnetta stayed in one spot for several minutes causing extreme pain and swelling to my face. The steamer she used was only aimed at the left side of my face, so when she started the extraction process on the right side, obviously nothing would come out. But she still stayed in one spot, irritating my face to an extreme degree. I woke up this morning in much pain with my face extremely irritated and blotchy. Their other spa services may be better, but I will not be paying $150+ for a facial here ever again. I also agree with the other reviews about the front desk staff. The young girl who took my payment last night was texting on her phone the entire time I was trying to pay and continuously smacked her gum with an annoyed look on her face when I asked her a question. As I said, I hate to give Arnetta a bad review because of how sweet she is, but there are definitely some things about this spa that could be improved. read more

I had a pregnancy massage today with Sandy, and it was all that I hoped for. I highly recommend her. I also liked the spa itself; clean, comfortable, soothing, and unassuming. I have had many massages, and I like a pretty firm, hard-working massage; I got this, with sensitivity to the particular concerns and discomforts of a pregnant woman. Sandy is not at all a fluffy, new-agey kind of masseuse; she's pretty no-nonsense, though warm enough. She barely talked during the whole treatment, except to make sure I was comfortable; personally, I prefer that. A bonus: the massage room has a full bathroom next to it, so you can take a hot shower afterward so you don't have to put your clothes back on while you're still covered in massage oil; I thought that - along with the strawberries and cookies and water and tea - was a great touch. read more

Just want to give a shout out to Janelle. I had a prenatal massage with Janelle and enjoyed that. Since giving pregnancy/giving birth, my lower back pain has been bad enough that I haven't been able to lift baby girl (now four months) into and out of her crib, and bending over to change diapers was pretty painful. After seeing a chiropractor a couple times and having the pain return within a couple days, my husband suggested a therapeutic massage. I went back to see Janelle for a therapeutic post-natal massage. I'll be honest, the massage itself was rough and I had to ask Janelle to decrease the pressure a couple times. However, having now been pain-free for nearly a week, I'm singing her praises. I couldn't be happier that she worked out whatever was bothering me and will be happy to see her again if the pain returns. read more

I went back to Spa on the Hill ONLY because I had another gift card to use. I knew I wasn't ever returning for a massage, so I booked a facial with Donna. What I appreciated: -The fact that Donna went over time, because we had started late, so I did get every minute that I paid for -That they store gift cards on file so I never have to print it out and bring it with me -The style in which the spa is done - this is a cute place! The bathrooms adjacent to treatment rooms are done so well and I love that they are fully stocked. -Donna did more extractions than typically "allotted", which I probably did need, and less of a massage ... honestly, I wouldn't have even noticed because there was a good massage portion, but I LOVE that she asked me if that was ok, rather than just doing it. What I didn't: -I was left sitting in the waiting room for 20 minutes while the receptionist and another staff member sat chatting and ordering lunch -Donna was very sweet, but I really just wanted to relax during the facial and didn't want to answer questions all the way through. Trust me, I know that she needs to know things about my skin, but she could've asked everything at the beginning, rather than throughout the whole facial. -The light that is used for close up work is BRIGHT. Like "my eyeballs are tearing up" bright. I know they need that light to see, but maybe we could cover my eyes with something more than a piece of cotton. -That I could hear whole conversations happening in the hallway outside the treatment room. -When I checked out I was charged $5 extra for my service. When I asked why there was the increase, the receptionist told me that sometimes things are different on the website than the brochure that is used in the spa. She did charge me the lower price but um what on earth. All in all, this experience was ok. It's really not the best facial I've ever had, and I still feel like I paid way too much for the service I received, even WITH the gift card. She was super flexible about the positioning depending on my comfort level (I'm really glad I opted for using the special cushions and being on my stomach, what a treat after 8+ months of no lying face down at all!), she focused on the spots I was having the most issues with (hips and lower back), with just the right amount of pressure. I have been a customer here for over a year and enjoyed many wonderful appointments with Rudy, however I think i will have to find another spa at this point, after several appointments being cancelled with 1-2 hours of notice. I understand that things come up for the individual therapists, but since the spa is very inflexible about customers cancelling, it doesn't seem very respectful of customers time for them to cancel so frequently without offering anything but a voicemail saying your appointment is cancelled in return. For budgetary reasons, I go when my back, neck, hips are getting painful due to stress, injury, or sprains. I wish I could go on a regular basis. And every time, I feel relief afterwards. I patronized this business on 5/10/15 for a Mother's Day special that I received via email. The email stated there would be light bites and Bellinis served, however, there was nothing offered. There was an empty table and a less than half full pitcher of water. When I inquired with the receptionist about the discrepancy she seemed aloof. Although I was happy with the services and enjoyed them as well I was very disappointed not only by the fact that the fare was not offered but more so by the lack of caring or assistance in addressing my concern by the receptionist. I just had one of if not the best massage EVER! I had a 1 hour therapeutic massage and my masseuse was Janelle. She was AMAZING. I had serious knots in my neck and shoulders and she got right to work. I didn't have to ask her to alter the pressure once. It was firm and direct, and she rubbed and pressed the knots away. She also used a lotion/oil that was not perfumey at all, and I didn't walk out feeling slick or sticky. I also felt like the face-down face rest was one of the most comfortable I've laid my head in. I am not a person who has massages on a schedule, but I'll definitely go back! The woman who greeted and checked me in was friendly and hospitable, and even got me a glass of water in a glass glass, not a water bottle. I felt like I was in someone's home. The only reason I hold back and give 4 stars is because there was a little noise from the street in my comfy massage room, but it wasn't too noticeable with the relaxing music. And also, I called Friday morning for a Friday afternoon appointment and was told they were booked but that I'd be put on a waiting list. I made my appointment for today (Monday) and asked them to call if they had any cancellation, any time, because i live 5 minutes away. They didn't fit me in earlier, and as far as I could tell I was the only person there when I arrived 5 minutes before my appointment. But like I said, my massage was great, everyone was super-nice, and I found the "homey" quality of this spa being in a Cap Hill row house quite charming. read more
