This is one of my favorite places to see bands. You have the opportunity to be up in person with some of the bands. The last few shows I've been to I've been able to stand right at the stage. They do have a bar there for folks that drink or they do serve water as well for folks that don't. Sound is pretty good there as well. I've seen bands such as The Spill Canvas, Pete Yorn, Smile Empty Soul, Kamenar, Hearts and Hand grenades, Mom rock and so many more. This is a stand up concert venue. Arrive early so that you can snag a seat along the wall (long bench). Otherwise, you will be on your feet the entire concert. It's my understanding that there host events that are seated, but ask that question before you make a purchase. I enjoyed the concert I attended. I felt safe and the drinks are on point! They pour for adults so if you are a lightweight, bring a designated driver along. The staff are friendly and just want to do their job well. The photographers are there to snap pictures of the crowd and the band, so let them work too. Great spot!! read more

Great selection of beers on tap and cans/bottles. They get some great artists. Some big names and this is a great place to see them. Most if them mingle with the crowd before and after their sets. This may be my favorite music venue in all of CT. So intimate and you can see some great bands that stop by between New York and Boston. I've seen countless artists here but my favorite shows have been Future Islands, Sunflower Bean, Mike Kinsella from American Football, Luna, Waxahatchee, and Yeasayer. I'm just upset with myself that I only discovered The Space after I moved out of Hamden. Such a hidden gem. Staff here is friendly and bartenders are great. They've got coat check during the winter months. Plenty of parking in the venue but just watch out for potholes. Bar has tons of options and the bathrooms are clean! read more

meh. The sound was horrific in this place. it's a TINY place despite the building. I don't understand why so many good comments. The sound guy had no idea what he was doing for the Kids Prince show. The volume was WAY high. People kept asking to turn it down. all the families hugged the back was for 45 min till they finally fixed it. Still a tingly sound in this place. For a place located what seems to be in the outskirts of nowhere,The Outer Space is clean and homey, giving off a "feel-good" vibe ideal for non-niche bars. There are only a few beers to choose from any one point in time, but what they have is mostly all craft and highly selected for. I cannot say the same for the food which seemed thrown together and cheap, akin to " let me go to Stop and Shop with 20 bucks and throw something together" level. The big draw of TOS is the live music and decent stage sound management. The acts that cycle through here aren't your typical local high school garage band, and sometimes you'll surprisingly be able to catch really hot talent. Along the lines of entertainment, they also have Ms. Pacman in the corner. Classic. We saw Sunflower Bean here the other night and had a great time. My sister said she felt like she was on the set of an indie movie. The bartender was very helpful with explaining the gluten-free drink options. I had a delicious hard cider. We liked the signs in the bathroom, for example: "Whatever, just wash your hands." Please be mindful of the people's level of intoxication at your events. Last night I had a man leaning on me with most of his body weight. Looking behind me he had at least 3 feet of space, and did not need to physically be touching me. As this was a hardcore show I am well aware that push pits and crowd surfing exist however this was a targeted attack. I am a small woman 5'6 and approximately 115 pounds. This man wanted to physically obtain my spot in the front and saw that I was the easiest target. He not only refused to stop putting his body weight on my back but he gestured the middle finger at me , and told me FUCK YOU multiple times. Prior to the headliner, I realized he finally left. Unfortunately, several minutes later this drunken disaster was back with a full beer in hand spilling it everywhere. Purposely In my space once again. He then started coughing obnoxiously into my hair with his mouth uncovered about 5 to 6 times in an effort to repulse me or to get me to turn around so he could cough in my face. I didn't budge. Then once the band started tuning he held his beer at an angle with the top of the cup facing my body so that way when people started moshing his drink would pour on me. He was intoxicated, and violent towards women. Why he wasn't escorted off the premises or off of me is a different story. It really stinks a woman can't go enjoy a show without feeling physically uncomfortable. I'm pretty disgusted. The venue is nice , but there should be security near the stage, not only at the entrance. bartenders should also be better trained especially how much they serve. Not only was this individual so visibly intoxicated he couldn't stand without leaning on people, he could barely keep his eyes open. Once the pit was going for the headliner he fell into multiple people because he couldn't stand. At that point I was happy he was away from me. I drove from 2 hours away to attend this show and had to drive home wet from beer and germs from his coughing in my hair. I attend shows regularly, and I've never been so disgusted in my life. read more

Bad blood and bad vibes have now haunted this place. While I'm glad it didn't cease to exist, I'm sad the way it had to happen. Whether or not it's a misunderstanding, the damage is done. This place is a real gem in the music scene, beer scene, and food scene. The outdoor patio is a real treat as well. As a kid, I used to come to The Space to play shows and hang out with other cool music kids. As an adult, I've found everything I loved about The Space is alive and intact within The Outer Space. Many people have commented about the significance in the music scene and the beer, but there's something far more important that needs to be said. This bar offers the best cheeseburger in the state. Period. I don't grant this accolade trivially; I've eaten many other cheeseburgers from places like Plan B, Ted's, Corey's Catsup and Mustard, and Max Burger. The Cheeseburger from the outer space handily beats all of them in taste, presentation, and value. The seasoning is perfection, and the tender beef oozes some amazing juice all over the Cajun fries if you let it (and you should unless you want to miss out on heaven). Anytime I am craving a cheeseburger this is absolutely the place you will find me. read more

This is my 100th Yelp review. I wanted to save it for someplace cool, and it doesn't get any cooler than The Outer Space. Really. I've always loved The Space for its fun atmosphere, quirky decorations, and great shows. Now that I'm over 21, The Outer Space is a welcome addition for the ability to walk across the parking lot from the all-ages venue to enjoy a beer in a just-as-cool, but more relaxed and grown up atmosphere. It's a great stop on its own, too, whether you're going to The Space for a show or not. The Outer Space also hosts its own live music shows and open mic nights several nights a week, and on regular nights, it's a great place to stop in for a beer. There's only a few beers on tap, but they're all good, quality beers, and then there are a bunch of bottled beers to choose from. During happy hour from 5-7, drafts are only $2. They only serve beer and wine, but that's not a problem for me because I'm more of a beer person, and there's a lot of beer to choose from. There's plenty of seating, too, from bar stools to comfy couches to tables, and there's a great outside patio. I haven't been able to visit The Outer Space as much as I would like because of my schedule this semester, but when I do find time, this is one of my favorite places. The owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming, and it's a good time any night of the week. I made it to trivia one Sunday, and it was a ton of fun. This has become my go to bar. It's really a diamond in the rough!! They have good food, and service. Always have a great selection of craft beer available (if you are feeling adventurous try and tackle their 30 in 30 challenge) One of my favorite things about this place is that it is not full bar, beer and wine only. So it's a great place to avoid that "shot" crowd. Kick back and relax with a few cold beers in a quaint and normally fairly quiet atmosphere. I visited the Ballroom at The Outer Space on Friday for the Pete Yorn show. I had never been to the venue before and was definitely satisfied. Great place to see a show-small, intimate--like being in someone's basement. The decor of the ballroom, as Pete Yorn put it, is "octoberfesr-ey". Not a lot going on with the decor but then again, I was there to hear music. They only serve beer and wine and have a really great and comprehensive beer selection. I'd love if they had a few more wine choices. They really are limited in that department. I did see food going past, but never looked at a menu so have no idea what the offerings were. The Outer Space and The Ballroom are great little finds. Really a good venue to hear live music. I'm looking forward to going back. I hope Pete Yorn cones back again next year! I've enjoyed this venue on a few occasions for some pretty good concerts. Had some drinks had a good time, but I have never eaten here except one time. Well, I also never do reviews. THIS latest visit however, has compelled me to A) review, and B) make sure to continue to visit to eat! The graciousness with which I and my girlfriend were treated was refreshing to say the least. We were given a couple beers to try which were astounding. The food suggestions came and I was blown away. The pretzels were delicious and the beer mustard was delectable. The fried pickles. My. Great shows if you like indie rock. Saw some big names here and it wasn't even crowded sometimes. That's what happens when you get obscure but great artists in a small city like New Haven. If it was in NYC, forget it. You wouldn't even be able to get in. You have a great owner and crowd. Great selection of wines and breweries. No hard liquor though. My favorite hang out. Went here to see some live music with a friend. Right away I liked the place because of ambience. Cool decor and felt like you were a part of a secret club. But when we walked in, you could tell this place catered to a lot of regulars. What I mean by that is they werent welcoming and didnt seem to like strangers. The very bartender was sort of short with us, and seemed annoyed when we didn't know what was on tap/available. There was also a credit card minimum and restrictions on where you could bring your drinks. The actual concert was great and the space had a great sound system. I would go back. read more

Small venue in an industrial park. The place is tiny, funky and lacking refinement. Perfect for a Kyle Kinane show. How was this possible in such a small venue? The beer selection was quite good, the bar food was tasty (we only had fried pickles, so hard to comment on more than that). Our server took special care of us (Jamie). Incredibly disappointing - do not expect 4 stars even though that's what it tells you. Waiting 20 minutes- then had to get up and get a waitress. We're there for 1 hour before our food was served. I attached a picture of my "nachos" aka corn chips. My 7 year old niece could have made better nachos. My husband had a buffalo chicken wrap DOUSED in hot sauce. This place is great and it's within walking distance (ok so maybe that part doesn't help you). It does though, have an excellent rotating craft beer selection and live music pretty much every night. There is an outdoor area, some comfy seating, bar seating, as well as tables. Everyone there is very friendly and it's a very comfortable place to just hang out regardless of the time of day/evening. They get some surprisingly good bands there. They also have an expanding menu of solid food to soak up the excellent (and well-priced) beer. These guys have a great selection of beer and plenty of great entertainment. Lots of rare beers, and although pricey, hard enough to get that it's justifiable. The menu changes every day, sometimes more. The food needs a lot of work. It's certainly overpriced for the quality and the chef frequently makes mistakes on order. Can't say enough about what a fantastic spot this is. The bar has tons of different craft beers including some of the best local brews in the area. They have a brand new menu with lots of great choices and can even cater an event. My daughter's fourth birthday party was at the ballroom right next door and they did a fantastic job with the venue and food. The look and decorations in the place are awesome and just checking out all the stuff is a blast. They also have a very laid back closed off patio that is a great for chilling outside and hanging out. And along with their other location next door, they are known for having some of the best new local bands in CT. The staff is super cool and this is a locally owned business that is definitely worth supporting. I plan to go back and hope that everyone else does too read more

I've seen several bands here. It's a good little spot. It's pretty tight, but we managed to find room enough to do a little dancing when our friends' band was playing. They don't always charge a cover, so I've seen shows pretty cheaply. I always have a hard time reviewing bars since I don't drink, so I feel I'm always leaving something useful out of the review. But, there is a bar. I hear that you can purchase alcoholic beverages there. read more

This is a great little place for some amazing beers. I was out in this region for my buddy's show at The Space, which is a small music venue just across from The Outer Space. We headed into this tiny little bar to find a very large and fantastic selection of craft brews. I unfortunately had to drive home, so I didn't get to try everything I wanted listed on their magical brew board. It was a bit tight at times, but because it is a super cool place to hang out. If you like drinking beer and talking to your friends I highly recommend a stop here. My first negative review on Yelp. I tried to love this place. I love music of all kinds, and craft beer, and with The Outer Space so close to home, I wanted this to be my new happy hour spot. Unfortunately happy hour is not so happy here. The first time I tried, I walked in and immediately felt a bit out of place... or that I was interrupting the regulars. Sitting alone, I ignored the vibe, enjoyed my beer and chicken fries, and decided to give happy hour another shot a few months later. Brought hubs next time who came hungry. It took a good bit of time to place our drink and food orders, and after an hour from when we walked in the door, we had to leave without our food due to time constraints. Regulars were still not overly welcoming. I shortened this review, because my first pass was a little ranty. But long story short, if you are hoping to grab a "quick" bite at a new place after work for happy hour, this might not be your place. But I do hope to try a show sometime, as the outer space seems to bring in rave music reviews. read more
