Not bad for the Westville/New Haven area. They make a really good spinach artichoke dip! The Happy Hour menu could be better, offer more choices. I have only been here once but enjoyed it very much. As mentioned, there is a bar and then a quieter area. I sat in the quiet area and it was quite pleasant. I did not have dinner..just a slice of cake and coffee. I found the atmosphere surprisingly nice and very relaxing. Of coarse you could hear the noise from the other area but it did not bother me all that much. The dessert was quite good and prices reasonable. The only thing I did not like is that it was freezing. I will have to read some other reviews to see if anyone else noticed this. Not a huge deal though. read more

Good beer menu, good food. It's pretty difficult to get a server in the bar sometimes, though. I do like that they serve the beers in the appropriate glass. The Restaurant has much better service - but there is no separate menu, so you've got your bar food, and your bar food diguised as entrees. We did have fun drawing on the paper on the tables though. read more

Just a couple quick things for those of you who may come in... When the bartender tells you that the menus are "all at the tables", what she means is that she's already given out her menus to people who asked her for them, and then they sat down at tables and are currently using them. I'm sure if you go to the hostess and ask her for menus she'll happily give them to you. Also, just because a bar has beer paraphernalia hanging up as decoration, it doesn't mean that they serve that beer, although they probably either did at one point, or still do on a rotating basis. If you'd like to know what beer Delaney's serves, there's a giant chalkboard with all the beers listed on it, a ton of tap handles to look at, and a printed beer list. I wouldn't let one person's bad review prevent you from checking this place out. read more

Ate at Delaney's a week ago for dinner, I got the NY Strip steak. First , the chef came out and said they were out of potatoes ... on a Saturday? Potatoes are essential to a restaurant- NO?? I subbed out for rice and the dinner was pretty good and the server was decent. Decided to stop on Sunday afternoon with my daughter for lunch. Parking lot was 3/4 empty , we walked in and only 4-5 seats were occupied. We stood around for 3-4minutes...no one in sight ...and finally a tall young guy walks by , I needed to flag him down and he tells us it'll be at least an hour to get food because they are short staff?? Like wtf? I don't get it, didn't this place just open back up?? Not a good sign ... read more

Such a complex character, this Delaney. On a Thursday night we walked into the actual "Tap Room" door and it was way too loud and college-aged. Not in a bad way, but we'd walked past the dining room a few times and we were anticipating that and this was definitely not that. We hiked around the corner, and entered the restaurant side. Better. But still odd; the hostess was having a telephone conversation of a personal nature that she couldn't quite tear herself away from to acknowledge us and seat us. Think Chevy Chase hosting Weekend Update. She was actually talking on phone with a land-line, not a cell phone, which heightened the Chevy Chase effect. Weird, but we smiled and moved on. We were then seated next to large, somewhat noisy party in the larger, brighter half of the dining room. At least ten men of late middle-age, who seemed to be realtors from New Jersey and who, at one point in the evening sang songs from The Sound of Music. I jumped to conclusions and assumed they were gay old friends. Imagine my surprise when the talk turned to a raunchy discussion of topless bars and the chances of impregnating girlfriends back home. Ew. I don't want to hear that while I'm eating. And while I'm eating a really good meal! Not exactly Delaney's fault . . . There's also a second section to the dining room, nearer the bar and more darkly lit and separated by a large pane of glass. I saw a party of (what appeared to be) frumpy older middle-aged ladies there and I applaud Delaney's for not seating them near the NSFW realtors and for having all this interesting space to work with. Our waitress was a bit frazzled by the constant needs of the realtors. She seemed put out when I asked for the prices of the draught beers, and when I asked where some of the US beers came from, specifically. These didn't seem like odd questions to me, but she was having a bit of a bad night. And, based on some loud discussion from the realtors, I suspect that the beer prices are not actually set in stone; I actually think they were charged more for the same beer than I was. Good for you, Delaney's, but is that really legal? Anyway, somewhere, deep inside this labyrinthine restaurant, behind all the noise and hoo-ha, is buried a good kitchen. The chicken on my salad was beautifully done, the salad itself was well-proportioned and dark green. Sally is right, the dressings are great. My husband's soup and burger were above-average and everything costs about the same as at a mediocre diner. And I wish Zinc, in New Haven, had this beer list - the selection of beers from New England and the Northeast is particularly good. 4 star food, 2 star service. Since this first, strange introduction to Delaney's, I've been back often enough. I still like the salads and burgers, if you're looking for a deal, but their more ambitious, and pricier, entrees and specials are very successful too. And the onion rings are some of my all-time favorites. But the service remains . . . awkward. Still, at 9:30 on a recent freezing Sunday night I asked them if the kitchen was open and they said, "Of course" like it was no big thing and brought me hot, tasty food and they were still seating and serving their delicious menu at 10:45 when I left. Almost anywhere else in New England (minus a diner) you'd be eating french fries or overcooked odds and ends and cursing quietly. read more

We stopped here for brunch recently, and I have some thoughts . . . The inside is nicer than you'd expect, and the service is far worse. I had eggs benedict, which was terrific, and boyfriend had the french toast with the cinnamon apples, which I think we can clearly state rated a 5 out of 5 for him. If only 95% of the service didn't completely suck, I'd give the whole experience 5 stars. If you only care about the quality/taste of the food, you won't be disappointed! read more

Delaney's is rad. I took my aunt here, she's a bitch, and she loved it! I'm a baby for the spicy calamari caesar. Oh damn, it treats me right. I love their beer selection. You can say, "hefeweizen'"real smarmy like and the servers don't bat an eye. Blam, you got a hefeweizen. Delaney's is my go to restaurant for everything from casual din din with the folks to proper drink fest with the gang. 1.) Just to warm you up: I came here one night to check out their beer selection. I heard the food was a hit or miss, but I did try some sweet potato fries from a friend. I thought they were cooked the way I wanted it, crispy. 2.) What your eyes may say: I came on a night time where all other businesses were closed in this area. It was packed. A very big college crowd, so you got the rowdiness in full force. This place has two pub areas, but one side seemed nicer looking than the other, a pool table was there. 3.) Beer: I had the Allagash Black and the Father Christmas. Though the menu displayed such a large selection, it appeared very thing was tapped out. I tried ordering the Black Boss Porter and the Imperial Chokolat Stout. "We are out." I tried ordering a wheat beer. "We are out." 4.) Service: Well, let's say there were about 30 people waiting at the bar.........with ONE bartender. It took me some time to get my first drink then gradually smooth sailing. 5.) Impressions: I give this place a 4 for the beer selection, but 2 or 3 for service, and the fact I couldn't try the other craft beer on tap or bottle. When I'm looking for a place to just chill and have a beer...this is the go to. In college, I went all the time to the point where the bartenders knew me. Even now, when I don't go so often, they still remember me. Love the darts and pool, love the beer selection, and love the free wings during happy hour. The food pretty much kicks ass too! read more

Delaney's is an interesting place that kind of sits on the fence between a few different types of establishments, but does everything it does well enough that you don't feel too weird about it. For instance, on one side is the tap room, which definitely has a divey feel to it, with a pool table, old wooden furniture, TV's with sports on, and the requisite Southern Connecticut students (the University is very close by). On the other side, you have a dining area which seems almost formal until you realize you can draw on the placemats with crayons. And the lounge kind of sits between the two stylistically, giving off a slightly classier vibe without feeling legitimately upscale. The beer list is pretty phenomenal. They have about 50 or so beers on tap at any given time, categorized by style. And if for some reason you can't find what you're looking for, the bottle list is also impressive. They also offer a variety of flights at different times which you can check on the website. The food itself is pretty standard pub fare, though they have some very, very good sweet potato fries. I believe if you just order them alone, they come with maple syrup, which is an interesting and delicious combination. The spinach and artichoke dip is also especially good. Delaney's has a little bit of everything, and is one of my preferred beer bars in New Haven. Good beer, good food, good atmosphere, and a single pool table that is surprisingly available make this one of the better options in New Haven, especially in the Westville area. read more

No place for 0, our server was horrible, our fish and chips was frozen pollock, and my pasta? No chicken when it says "loaded with grilled chicken". The server noticed I hadn't touched it and asked if I wanted it wrapped I said "no it's not what I ordered" she replied "it's chicken carbonara that's what you ordered" I replied "then where's the chicken" her answer " oh, I'll throw it out" not let me take it back, or I'll have my manager take care of that, or even your drinks I never brought you are on me!!! For Westville, Delaney's is the tops for wings and beer. They have a great selection of beers on tap and their wings are some of the best in the area. If you're just looking to grab a beer after work or on a non "party" night, the bar area is a great bet. Plenty of TVs to catch the game and more often than not you can find a drink or wing special to help make the night go farther. Also, while salads aren't my typical fare, I hear they actually have some killer ones on the menu - which is unusual for a bar. Parking can be a hassle, but that's Westville. Word to the wise, don't try the Webster Bank of Dunkin' Donuts lots. They're pretty tow happy. read more

Our server was so slow that our buzz died off between beers. It was par or sub par bar food, nothing special. The sweet potato fries that were mentioned here? Walmart sells them--they're McCain brand. I noticed that they have cheap beer specials on Mondays and Tuesdays though, $1-2. My brother lives in New Haven and loves Delaney's. it's such a good spot it was recently featured in the NYT Dining and Wine Section. If I lived in New Haven I would be a regular at Delaney's too! They have an excellent, reasonably priced menu and a huge beer selection! I had a very tasty salad and some type of peach beer. I loved that they have really cute outdoor dining. I've read about Delaney's on and off for the past few years in the Brew News and thought I finally had the time to get there and enjoy it. There was only one bar tender in the Tap Room around 4 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. She was earning her money well, short wait times when she could take a breath. They didn't have many tap lists which can be tough because there are so many great beers on tap. This was a complaint shared by the bar tender as well as the waitstaff looking for them for the restaurant side as well. Only got some snacks, cup of chili and chowder were good. Nothing to blow your socks off, but solid offerings. Order of spicy calamari left a lot to be desired. Served with spicy pepper but didn't seem to be cooked with them. Frying was pretty poor and they came out soggy. Everything was served promptly and hot but, not great. Seems like the problems we saw were pretty normal, the waitstaff seemed to be at odds with the management. They did a great job at being helpful in the face of it though. read more

Yay Beer! Delaney's Tap Room is the New Haven area beer mecca. There is an ever-rotating list of draughts, and bottles of some of the higher end stuff are available. This is one of the only places in CT where you might find a real barleywine on tap. To keep their "dive" status, taps of Bud, Bud-Light, and the High Life are strategically placed among Leffe, Dogfish, and La Chouffe. They've got darts and plain ol' bar-food, but the real reason to go is the beer selection and servers who actually know how to pour beer. If I were rating beer selection only, this place would get the full five stars. Later in the evening, when the real bar-crowd comes out, the place turns into a den of white hats, bad cologne, and college amateurs. These are not the folks to introduce to 9% alcohol beers. If you go, go for the beer. Get there early (afternoon pub-crawl?) and leave before seven. read more

This is a mixed bag - I find the Tap Room pretty gross. I've been in twice and both times there were loud groups of really drunk, really rude guys who were picking fights at the pool table. The restaurant is better though. I had a steak sandwich once I didn't love - but I definitely recommend the Delaney Salad and a side of sweet potato fries. This is a great place to go on a weekday or weekend. They have a decent menu, though they could stand to have smaller, cheaper appetizers. (They do serve sides, but don't list them on their menu). Delaney's is a surprisingly large restaurant with 2 bars and a dining room between them. They have a thorough beer menu you can spend a while browsing through. The bar typically has a good vibe and since it's in uptown New Haven, you'll usually find 25+ year old patrons, not so many 21 year olds. The bartenders are usually friendly and often funny. Bring some change for the jukebox. I always love a place that let's the crowd choose the music. Delaney's is one of the better bars in New Haven if you're not looking for the whole club scene. They have an ever-changing selection of beers, and some good food on top of it. They also have quite a few beer dinners here as well as other events sponsored by breweries. They recently renovated the tap room, and managed to make it more upscale without losing the character of the place. The servers are usually always nice as well as knowledgable about the beer they have on tap which is always a plus, if not a necessity when working at a place like this. Good for beers and lunch. Casual food is good and beer selection is great. I really like going here in the summer with my dog as they have outdoor seating. DO NOT...I REPEAT. ..DO NOT HAVE BREAKFAST HERE!!! They're breakfast is disgusting. I am a terrible cook and could have made better pancakes. the cornbreef hash was also tasteless. I went here tonight for dinner and a few drinks. I had their buffalo wings for an appetizer, and French dip sandwich for dinner. The wings were very good. I"m pretty picky when it comes to buffalo wings. A lot of places tend to make their wings more salty than hot. That was not the case here. These were some of the better wings I've had recently. I'd say just below Sliders and J Timothy's in Plainville. The French dip was pretty good, no complaints. The bred was on the softer side, with lots of roast beef in between. I can't wait to go here for dinner again to try some more things. read more

Delaney's has two faces one may say. One side is restaurant styled, quiet and relaxed with an outside seating area in the summer/spring. The other side is tap room, a sports styled bar, that can get quite rowdy one nights with drink specials and/or games on. The two sides are separated and regardless of what side you're on you wouldn't even know the other existed. Also the location is a little sketchy and parking can be a pain, but don't let that turn you away. They have a large selection of beers and the food is pretty damn good as well. Their burgers are delicious, and I am a huge fan of their brunch. Brunch specials come with a choice of coffee, mimosa or blood mary. Delaney's has a fantastic Pesto Primavera... I recommend it to all! As a matter of fact, when it comes to food, it's all been good here at Delaney's. 3.72 stars This is a solid Pub with an excellent selection of beers on tap and in bottle. There is an impressive knowledgeable staff, I heard a waitress and bartender giving advice and learnt a thing or two. The food is delicious, a cut above the run o' the mill pub fare. The space includes a comfortable bar, a dining room and another imbibing salon. neh "tap room". There are outside tables, but the traffic is busy at times with not much of a buffer zone. We had the spicy calamari (what I would call "RI Style" with da peppers etc.). The batter was very light, they were fried to perfection. For the main event we had a burger and a BBQ Brisket sandwich. The latter was an served on oversized bun/mini loaf of bread. A heaping pile of tender slow cooked meat smothered in a vinegary sauce. The "American" burger was simply served but cooked to order, medium, and quite good. * City lot with meters up the street, not many spots at their lot. * Truly distintive selection of beers. * We went on a lazy Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. I can imagine it gets crazy here on Thur, Fri, and Sat nights. read more

I've only been to this place for Happy Hour. In the bar area, it can get really crowded and service can be shoddy. Luckily the food and drinks are good, or I would give it a 3 for the service. This is a no frills beer bar. You come here for beer, and that's it. Luckily, they have a ton of it. The taplist is very good, as is the bottle list. If you're into whiskeys and bourbons, the selection is impressive. All the beers are served in appropriate glassware, and I've only had one beer from a dirty line. However that's where the accolades stop. The pub is a shoddy place, very much a college kid hangout. How college kids can afford to drink there however, I have no idea. I ordered a beer that looked interesting without looking at the elusive beer menu (there aren't many of these things). I handed a ten-spot to the bartender, got my beer, and she gave me my change: a quarter. I thought there was a mistake, but no, that beer really was $9.75! A heads up would have been nice, but the bartenders seem like burnt out old pros, who really don't care if they're pouring double IPAs or PBR. By the way, there is an actual restaurant of the same name next door. I accidentally went in there the first time, and it's amazing that these two places are the same business. The restaurant is very nice, even upscale. The pub next door is the night to the restaurants day. Delaney's is a good old fashioned dive bar with a tap-list that's on steroids. read more

The best hamburger I have had in eons! Guinness infused delight with a side of perfectly cooked fries and a generous slice of pickle. I visited Delaney's Restaurant as one of a group five at 8 pm on a Friday night. After parking in front of the restaurant, we were unsure whether this restaurant was a good choice for dinner. The tap room, which faces Whalley Ave, was very crowded and had a group of guys hanging out in front. We went around the side and found the entrance to the quieter and less crowded restaurant. Once inside, we were told that we'd have a 45 minute wait for a table in the dining room. We ended up being seated near the bar in about 20 minutes. Our server was very proficient at helping us with our beer choices. We provided him with a description of our preferred beer styles and he returned with draft beers that suited us well (I had the excellent New England Brewing Co.'s Sea Hag IPA). After finishing my first beer, I mentioned to our server that I couldn't decide between the Sea Hag and the draft Guinness Stout. He said "let me take care of it" and returned with a sampler of six beers currently on tap--and explained each beer to me. The food is a step above the standard pub fare. Since this was the week of St. Patrick's Day, Delaney's had a special menu with Irish foods. I enjoyed the Guinness beef stew in a bread bowl. The others in the party, including one vegetarian, said that their dinners were also good and that Delaney's was a good choice. Overall, the choice of beers was excellent, the service was very good, and the food was good. Parties of five or more may require an extended wait. read more

All right my feelings about this place are a little mixed. Now, I like a selection when it comes to beer, but prefer not to pay out the ass for it. Unfortunately I think Delaneys is a bit overpriced. Ive been here on several occasions with my boyfriend and he will ask for something off their draught menu and the airy waitress will go ummm I don't think we've tapped that yet and they've come back to say oh wait we do have that. I realize you have a few things on tap, but having a general knowledge of what you have could be key to your job, seeing that you work in a bar. I promise I wont think its tacky if you have a cheat sheet in fact i totally back you having one. Recetly went there, ordered their Goat Cheese & Apricot Salad, for ....10 dollars....mistake. Now if you like a side of oil for dressing and old sad looking lettuce go for it, but this is not a choice I will be making again. Ordered the Guinness burger before and that wasn't a mistake, so they do have good food there, just choose wisely. I've been to their chili cookoff & beer festival and that was good times. Delaney's is a business with two characters. One character/side of the building contains a rowdy sports bar and the other character/side contains a relaxed quiet restaurant. Both sections are separated by a thick wall and door. Maybe it was because we visited on the night before Saint Patrick's Day, but the bar section was a little too loud to our liking. Yea, that wasn't really a surprise given the particular holiday. So we opted to sit in the restaurant section. There we had some terrific hamburgers and french fries. The burgers were so good they could probably give Prime 16 a run for its money. They also have a truly phenominal beer list. I think that Delerium Tremens beer might have my name on it for my next visit. read more

I had a baked fish special - shrimp, scallops and tilipia over rice, with a white sauce. Was afraid it was going to be gloppy, but just the right balance of fish, sauce and rice. Here's the rundown from a recent visit. Drink: The beer selection and the beers are good. Food: Ordered a honey-chipotle burger which did not come with cheese, was soaked in a sauce that probably came out of a supermarket BBQ sauce bottle. It was overly spicy but not very flavorful. And it was served with sour cream. That is definitely a first for a burger. I tried everything I could to negotiate the taste. I even added a little sour cream and put a few fries on the burger itself but to no avail. I have to admit though that the fries that it came with were pretty good, however. I think their menu is far too comprehensive to warrant having any recommendable items. They should pare it down and make a lot more in-house. Service: I saved the worst for last. Our waitress was borderline rude, barely smiled, seemed like she did not want to be there at all and eventually just abandoned our table after we got all of our food! We were saved by another waitress who happened to come over to clear our table. I found the service awful from our original waitress. If we come back (and that's a big if) it'll be strictly for drinks. read more
