Woke up one morning with the need for a new look. I grabbed some images on my phone, made an appointment for that morning. It was my first time at Space, and they were obliging and friendly. I sat down with Shampa, and gave her my idea for a new cut, providing picture reference from my phone of the asymmetrical bob I had in mind. She was patient and communicative, being sure we were on the same page before we began. She checked on my during to be sure we were still on the same page. (She didn't chat during, but I am more than fine with that. Salon small talk exhausts me.) And when were done, I have a great and original new do that combined my ideas with her expertise. She gave e some tips on styling, and suggested I return to get a pop of color. But no hard sells on anything. I'd been cutting my own hair for years because I'd been burned before on bad salon experiences. But Shampa made everything so painless and easy, I'll definitely be back. This is a good salon for both the neighborhood and the price. I've gone back 3 times and have never been disappointed (but it would be fair to mention that I have a very simple style). I've been going to top salons in Manhattan since the 70s, anywhere from Kenneth, John Frieda, Brad Johns, Frederik Fekkai, etc. Well, I got tired of paying anywhere from $250 to $400 for monthly coloring so I went onto the internet and lo and behold found Space in Astoria. Adela is my colorist. No, I'm not fond of taking the train to Astoria but it's a mere 30 minutes and the pricetag makes it worth it. My double process coloring costs about $70. At that price, I could take a limo out there! And not only that, but my color is BETTER than when I went to the more expensive salons. Adela knows what she is doing. It's also a pleasant space without all the snobbery and attitude you get in Manhattan. So take a ride on the train, last stop Ditmars and get your color done for a fourth the price. If not, I can only say my color is better than yours!!! read more

Stay away from this place. I went in for highlights and a cut. Before I even spoke with the hairstylist, she had the color mixed without even talking to me first. I showed her pics of the color I wanted, and she still used the original color she mixed, which was nothing like what I asked for. The cut was horrible too - she cut a bunch of chunky layers that did not blend with each other. The whole process took 3 hours because she left me sitting there in the middle of things to take other clients. The staff seems unprofessional too - my stylist was dressed like she just woke up, and one of the others was drying her own hair in her chair when I walked in. Save your money! read more

I really wanted to like this place because it's just a couple of blocks from where I live, and the price is lower than the stylist I've been using near my office in Manhattan. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed with the results. The layering was poor and uneven, making my hair look unattractive and hard to comb. I was recommended by a family member to come see Bianca because she has done amazing work for them. From the moment I walked in everything looked professional I love the atmosphere I love the layout of the salon but most of all I was extremely happy with Bianca professionalism and understanding of what I wanted to do with my hair. She gave me a couple of her ideas and together we found what works best for me I'm so glad that I took her advice and this is the color that I ended up with. My past experiences I was never able to find a color that worked for me but no longer do I need to go anywhere else. Sitting in Bianca's chair was a pleasure she was awesome to talk to relatable and we had a lot in common. Get yourself a colorist that hypes up your color process every time they go and check on it. She styled my hair exactly how I've always wanted it. I don't need to go anywhere else after my first experience. She definitely bring something special to the salon. Her warmth kindness and attention to detail was appreciated and much more than she knows. Make sure you only asked for Bianca when you go to that salon because is the hair color guru She won't rush you, she will take her time with you and what's important for me was that i left there feeling beautiful during a moment that was very grey for me and for that reason I am thankful for my experience and meeting her. read more

I went for the first time today. There was great energy and everyone was really friendly. I just got a cut. So, I was really disappointed that I was never shown the back before I left and when I got home and looked at it it was 5 different lengths. I have very fine hair, and a bob, so the error is very noticeable. When I called to let them them know they offered to fix it - when I told them I was too nervous - they said ok thanks then and hung up on me. I won't be back. read more

I brought in a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like, we discussed the options and she did exactly what I wanted. She was also a whiz with the blow dryer! My hair is bouncy and shiny and beautiful. Not only that, at this price, the style cannot be beat. Save yourself the time, energy and money it will cost you (double or more) of going to Manhattan, and get your haircut at home! I love coming to this salon! I have been coming here for a few years now and I absolutely love it. I took a chance 3 years ago based on yelp to see if I can finally find a good salon and I did! I'm always greeted cheerfully when I walk in the door. I have the amazing RUDY do my hair every single time I come in. She is super professional and completely knows how to handle my hair. Let me give you a little run down. I have thick, curly, Dominican hair. I usually go down just to cut my hair and I don't even have to work hard. I tell Rudy the idea of where I want to go and she always delivers. I've started coloring my hair and its the same feeling. Never have to work hard explaining myself. She is very detailed and gives professional responses based on what will look more flattering on me and I always appreciate it. I love coming down here. I commute all the way from the bronx down to queens just to get my hair done by Rudy. Aside from her all of the stylists here are amazing. I've recommended this salon to most of my friends and they all have the same feeling. Their hair is always cut the way they want it and styled to perfection. I love coming here. I have been going to space salon (formerly known as georgios) since I was 10 years old. I am going to be 40!!!!. I admit I moved from the area and tried many different salons but they are still the best. Bob the owner is fantastic, Mary the manger is a delight. I forgot my hair clip the other day. They went out of there way to call and let me know they had it and I can pick it up at anytime. But the star of the show is Katherine. She is amazing. 2 years ago I went there with beautiful long hair. It got so damaged and dry. I was ready to chop it all off. Thankfully her and Mary decided to give me a Brazilian blow out. OMG it was amazing. I also dyed my roots and added some blond highlights to almost black here. The reaction I got was amazing. I have gone in a few times since for touch up on the roots and highlights and they have always been amazing to me. They have went to put quarters in my parking meters. Offered me drinks and even lunch. The prices are way worth it for the service you get. I got an up do last Saturday for my best friends wedding. It was $65.00 but let me tell you something. As of yesterday, I still had the same hair. Those curls did not come out until I washed them out. The place is amazing and it's a very friendly environment. You have got to try it at least once. Went to this salon for the first time today and never again!!! Overpriced! I didn't ask for no styling)))) they simply added 20$ for drying my hair after cutting my ends( which took 3 min!) Plus to everything person that cut my hair has a lack of intelligence whats so ever! Screaming at a client and asking what is wrong with his face! Wow ! I think her name was Janet! My fiance got me a gift certificate to Space for my birthday last October and I've called about 4 times and tried to make an appoitment for a massage. All the times i've called they were either booked or didn't have anyone on staff for a massage. I've tried both weekends and weekdays and am extreemly frustrated. Space Salon & Spa is the best salon in the 5-Boroughs. It is everything you want in a chic salon without the high prices. I started going to Space several years ago when I lived in the neighborhood and now travel 45minutes to get my hair cut and colored. All of the stylists are excellent. I am faithful to Stella who cuts tricky curly hair and colors and highlights to perfection. I cannot say enough about Stella's skills and knowledge. She's also open to hearing what I want and listens and always gets my color and cut exactly as I describe. The entire spa is staffed with extremely pleasant and professional staff, from Grace at the front desk to the stylists, manicurists and hair removal professionals. If you live in Astoria, you are very lucky. If not, t his place is worth the trip! read more

On Wednesday, Oct. 8th around noon went to Space to have hair washed and eyebrows done. The woman washing my hair said I needed a haircut. I mentioned I already had an appointment on the 18th with the owner to have my hair cut done. We kept on talking about what I was looking to get done as a haircut goes. She said she could do it and sounded so confident, I thought I could save time to have the haircut done at that moment. I explained I wanted long, lite, uneven layers and nothing above the shoulders. I showed Praya/Prama (do not remember her name) a photo of a haircut I will like to have from my blackberry. She reassured that she was clear on what I was looking for. Long, lite, uneven layers and nothing above my shoulders and only one inch short on length. I had a long hair almost to my waist in layers. The shortest layer was a bit below my shoulders. I ended up with with the shortest layer 4 inches above my shoulder and in length. I had a doctor's appointment so i needed to leave. I said to her, that wasn't what I was looking for and left. After my doctor's appointment I came back and spoke to the owner who said he could fixed it either the following day or another day. I came back the following day. When I sat at the chair after shampoo, one of the first things he wanted to do was to cut the top layer (?????). Since I refused, he said there was nothing he could do (?????). The right side is chopped soooo different from the left side. I could not help, but cry. I had bad haircuts in the past, but this is the very first time I am writing a review. That is how bad it is!!!! No only that, on Thursday after the false attempt to fix my hair from the owner, I took a closer look at my eye browns. I need glasses to be able to see closer. The right one is soooo bad done, it is shocking she claimed she could do it, but that the salon, have her doing eye browns. I had not done my eye browns for over 2 weeks hoping that a professional will fix them. Well, I will have to start all over again. The only reason I am writing this is because I do not want anyone else to go through this bad experience. Note: Praya/Praha is the worse and still had the heart to comment she liked what she did. I am the one wearing it. If she wants what she did to me, she can have it done it to herself. Do not practice on me. It is three days and I despise it each time worse than the previous. I'll be miserable thanks to Praya/Prana until I get my hair fixed which can't be right away because the top layers and the right side are sooooo short, it can't be fixed right away. read more

I went to Space Salon this weekend for a haircut just to clean up my ends. I have long, thick, curly hair so it's hard to find someone who can really work with my hair. My appointment was with Stella and she was outstanding. My hair has been especially dry these last few months, so she gave me an olaplex treatment. I'd never heard of that before, but she assured me it would leave my hair feeling soft and looking healthy. Stella did not disappoint. She followed the fantastic treatment by adding an angle and layers to take some weight off and leave my curls bouncier. Stella did an amazing job and my hair has never looked healthier! read more

Adela is the BEST! I actually found her on CitySearch about 5-6 years ago and have never been happier. First off, the salon is great overall. There's a great, friendly energy there and the service throughout is awesome. Adela loves what she does and it totally shows in her work. I've changed colors with her numerous times through the years and she ALWAYS nails it. Her cuts and styling are also top notch. She always gets you looking just the way you want or even better. After being with her for so long I've learned that whatever she wants to do is fine with me. She will never steer you wrong. Last night I just got the new brazilian keratin treatment with her, Brazilian Blowout and I am in love with it. No messy 3-day wait without washing. It's all done there, same day! So the only reason I gave this salon a 4 and not 5 is because I thought they took rather long to get my hair done, but if you don't mind waiting a little to have really great looking hair go for it. I'll def go back. I have dark black (blue) hair and wanted to go lighter but im terrified of having brown highlights go red or worse having it look like zebra stripes. Todd who used to work for Bumble and Bumble took me and no wonder he was so busy he's really the best. He made my hair look super natural and mastered that brown so it just lightened my hair but you can't tell anythings done. I love that natural looking hair and he really has the technique down. Everyone at the salon is really nice which is always a plus and the place is clean - its the kind of place you feel comfortable at (plus they give free cookies). I bought a groupon to go to ion studio in new york and will prob use it at some point or another, but i really can't wait to go back to Todd. Love my hot Mila Kunis hair!! read more

I've been here once and I find it over priced. If you have really curly hair don't waste your money because you won't be too happy with the results. I got my hair cut and colored which I was satisfied but not with the blow out. I had to go home and pass the flat iron over my hair. They specialize in straight to wavy hair not profusely curly like mine. I wont be going back but they a have a nice staff & it's a really nice salon. read more

Wow, had a great experience, beginning to end. The receptionist was super friendly, and got me in as a walk in last minute. the stylist, Nicole, was friendly, and very knowledgeable. I've been going to Adela at the Space Salon for couple of years now and she is THE BEST hair stylist and colorist ever! The highlights and color always look great and the price is always right at the Space Salon... not those exorbitant Manhattan prices! I used to go to AKS Salon UES but the prices are not comparable and the service provided is way more superior at the Space Salon. This place was a positive experience from start to finish. Now, I only needed a blow out for an event I was working so I can't attest to the hair cutting mastery of the stylists, but after my experience, I'd be willing to give them a shot! This place does not skimp on customer service. The receptionist was friendly, helpful and warm from the initial phone call to the moment I walked out of the salon. I was a tad early but was immediately sent off to get my hair shampooed by an equally friendly (and handsome!) man. I didn't catch his name because I was too busy admiring his swoon worthy hair. Then I was sent to Edna with a glass of ice cold lemon water to get my blow out. Edna was fantastic! Had me relaxed and laughing with her sarcastic but light hearted personality. I went to Space Salon for a hair cut and was very disappointed with the end result. I explained to the stylist KATHERINE that I was not happy with the back of my hair which she chopped up !!. It was a shock when she gave me attitude and was being defensive for her lack of skills. I'm really surprised that the owner/ manager are not focused on how rude their stylist behave with good clients. I had to go to another salon to get the hair fixed temporarily till it grows out. They were shocked with how the hair was cut in the back. It was supposed to be a sleek bob hair. It end up looking like a freak show in the back of my hair. And it explained why the stylist was hiding what she had as she was cutting my hair and kept delaying to show me the back of my head!!!! I'm so disappointed with their lack of professionalism . Went there for a mens haircut and left with an uneven chopped up look - not what anyone wants. The reception staff was nice and friendly but as for the rest, its 2 thumbs down. It was my first time and they told me to go wash my hair. After walking around I found it on my own but there's no one here to wash my hair, oh where did she come from, oh okay ill sit. It is very hard finding a good hairdresser who KNOWS how to cut curly hair. Rudi happens to be a GREAT hairdresser who knows how to cut curly hair. I had my third visit to the salon after moving to Forest Hills back in October. Rudi somehow managed to keep my hair espresso brown but mixed in a tinge of the shade lighter so it does not look flat. I love it. As for her cutting - she has the precision of curly hair down to a science. For the first time in YEARS, I can wear my curly hair down without having to place a clip in it to make it seem even. She also does a great blow out for special occasions. Not sure what all the negative reviews are about. I moved from Long Island and went to a top salon there...still didn't get the care and attention to detail as I get here. And for anyone griping about the prices, have you ever gotten a cut in NYC? Its still twice as much! read more
