Previous well contractor from Lamoille County had serviced our wells and water systems for over 20 years but nothing was ever done right, and they would have to make a return visit to correct their issues. To be sure, Spafford has ultimately gotten the job done for us on two occasions. However, the service on the way there has been lacking in clarity, professionalism, and transparency (as well, to some degree, honesty). We needed a new well dug on a tight timeline several years ago. Spafford did the job, but there were several moments where we thought "Huh? Is this really how this business operates?" Big steps in the process were taken without letting us know. One morning we were out and got home (not all that late) to find folks wandering through our home with the doors wide open. Sure, in the end, the work got done and it was the work that had to get done, but these were just little moments of feeling not great about the service. It's a long story, but towards the end of the job, Spafford neglected to complete a super important and major step. On the phone, they tried to frame it as if it was something they'd have to come back and do, if we wanted to set that up (implication: pay more). We pushed them and made it clear that this key step was, of course, part of the plan all along. Spafford's folks admitted as much, even essentially conceding that if we hadn't called them out, they would NOT have addressed the mistake. Fast forward a few years. Our pump controller went out, maybe in a lightning storm. We called and they were there that day. Awesome. We had turned on and off some breakers to try resetting the system before Spafford's folks arrived. When they arrived, I said I was just in the other room and if they needed anything, to come check with me. All of a sudden I heard power tools in the crawl space so I popped my head in to ask what they decided they needed to do. The technicians told me they were replacing the unit. I asked if they had confirmed that it couldn't be reset and that the unit was actually totally fried. They said that they didn't need to check because I had already checked. This struck me as a bit terrifying, when thousands of dollars were on the line - the professionals didn't double-check that we actually needed a costly replacement before they started the work? And they didn't check with me to at least let me know the step they were taking before they jumping into that work? Again, in the end, maybe this actually was what we needed and we are happy that the service happened quickly. But it's an unsettling feeling to not be completely certain. Of course, they were halfway into the project already. After my questions, they seemed to say that yes, they were sure that's what was wrong, but I also know they never did turn off the breakers to try resetting the system themselves. At no point did anyone give me an estimated cost until they were leaving the house, when the technician just said "this thing is pretty expensive...expect a big bill." He said it would be something like $1,500. It was actually more like $2,300. I want to be clear about the ways in which we don't feel great about Spafford, and also what we think they do well. We're grateful for their speedy service. We're grateful that we've got good and reliable water. But at several turns in our work with them, we've been left feeling like we can't entirely trust their work or their professionalism. But alas, there aren't many options around, so we'll probably find ourselves using their services again. read more

Fantastic service and no doubt some of the best customer service you can find. We found ourselves in the terrible position of having little to no water in our well. The crew at Spafford and Sons fixed the problem in what I believe to be a very fast time frame by hydrofracturing our well, saving us thousands. Imagine: it's the hottest day of the year, your in-laws are staying, your water goes out, the sun is going down. Such was the perfect storm that arrived at our home recently. I called Spafford and they were total pros. Tom arrived at our place in an hour and fixed the problem in 30 mins. Fees were very reasonable, especially since we were clearly interrupting his weekend.
