We went to explore possibilities for ourselves as we get older and need to make a plan. The consultant was very articulate and guided us thru several Options that seemed to make sense. We left with homework to complete and we need to bring back the information . I personally found it fascinating and constructive.. seems as if the sooner you get this done, the better for our survivors. It simplifies their lives. I never saw it as clear.. In recent memory, my family used Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos three times; two of those times, I was heavily involved in making the arrangements. Staff: Most of my interactions were with Gary Brown and I wish I had his patience and overall demeanor. Most meetings I had with Gary, some of my more rowdy relatives were with me and I am amazed at how Gary remained steadfastly calm through all the questions, interruptions, people talking over one another, etc. Pricing: Gary provided sheets that showed the pricing for every item, there's no hidden fees. While there are packages, the ability to pick specific items to fit our needs was very appreciated. Paperwork: Getting copies of the death certificates, communicating with the hospital and the medical examiner, notifying Social Security, etc, Spangler is prepared and have all those papers for you to sign. I can't imagine trying to track down all the papers I need to sign, I'm happy they have all of that on hand. Locations: We chose the Los Altos location because it was closer to the cemetery, but was further from our residence. The crematorium is located at their Sunnyvale location, and they were flexible, we can pick up the remains from Sunnyvale which is closer to where we live. We also were able to drop off personal effects to the Sunnyvale location as opposed to driving to the Mountain View location which is where the make up is done. I can't say enough how comfortable I felt and how grateful I am that Spangler took a lot of the weight off my shoulders during such difficult times. read more

Gary at Spangler helped me and my sister through a very difficult time.We lost our beloved Dad this July and Gary held our hand through some very difficult decisions that needed to be made.He is honest, direct and genuinely cares about people. He gave suggestions without imposing his view. He arranged for a priest and even managed to have the military there to honor his service in the Korean War. Well, this is definitely not a review I ever wanted to write, but I've been thinking a lot about my experience with this business, lately. The beauty of Yelp is people's ability to promote and encourage small businesses that might otherwise go unappreciated or unknown. When I lost my brother last year we were in need to Spangler's services. Their staff was acutely professional and truly compassionate toward my family and their needs. They met with us several times before the funeral services and walked us through the process of obituaries, donations, funerary traditions and casket selection. They did everything they could to take as many burdens away from the funeral process, as possible. They treated my brother's body with respect. Fortunately, we had the means to give my brother a full catholic funeral and reception. Unfortunately, many families are not in the same secure financial situation. But Spangler's offers a variety of packages so any price range can be accommodated. They are sensitive and tactful about finances. No on will leave feeling they have spared on their loved one. The funeral business is often an untrustworthy one. We've all heard about the scandals on the news. Many places see people at their most vulnerable and take advantage of that vulnerability and despair for a profit. The Spangler's have created a safe and dignified family-run establishment which treats their clients with respect and compassion (a too rare thing these days, unfortunately).. read more

I'm writing this review because oddly enough I ended up on yelp when I was looking for a mortuary for my father's cremation and funeral services. People don't tend to write about death and I was struggling to figure out how to choose a mortuary that would best support the Hindu rituals we needed to perform. The staff was great. They were very knowledgeable and even advised us on some of the Hindu rituals they had observed, things we could not figure out from the priest. Aside from being emotionally unprepared, we were also very unprepared for the rituals with very little information available online and unclear instructions from our Hindu priest. So the staff stood by and handed us all the random things we needed for the Hindu ceremony but had not known to bring along. There is a crematorium onsite at the Sunnyvale location and their space is large and accommodated over 200 people. If you're looking in anticipation of your loved one's passing, I would strongly recommend arranging beforehand. I'd heard that but you never quite understand until you go through it. There is a lot of paperwork and Spangler was great about emailing all the forms and taking faxed and scanned copies so I didn't have to get down there and leave my dying father. You'll be going through an extremely difficult time and I was grateful to be able to leave the services in their able hands. read more

Gary Brown at Spangler Mortuaries in Los Altos was exceptional in every manner and regard in assisting my family in facilitating our beloved Mother's final arrangements. He and the staff were caring, compassionate, and acutely sensitive to our needs. He provided comforting counsel and patiently explained every detail, including coordinating with another mortuary to arrange long distance transport and final burial in a local Los Altos cemetery. At every step, Gary provided caring and sincere support to our family, and provided us immense personal solace and comfort during a highly emotional time. He was immediately available and highly responsive to all our concerns. Of immense satisfaction was the gracious respect afforded our Mother and accommodation of family wishes for sentimental items to be placed with her. The loss of a beloved parent is a "dreaded" moment for everyone, however, the trauma of our loss was immensely alleviated by Gary's experienced assistance and guidance in navigating a discomforting process. We have been using Spangler for multiple generations/services. They have always been exceptional and easy to work with, and this time was no exception. My grandmother unfortunately passed away during Covid, and although the restrictions and difficulties made for a challenging experience, Kevin Hutchison and the Los Altos location made it easy and painless and despite it not being the full services we pictured for our Grandmother, given the circumstances, it was as best as it could be and Spangler was wonderful. They do their absolute best for you. read more

These people are SO special! They handled my grandpa's vigil, ecort to the church for the funeral and escort to the cemetary for the burial. They even helped be pallbearers, as most of the pallbearers were around my grandpas's age. They were around, but not in our faces about anything. So helpful and professional! read more

The people at Spangler, Los Altos, helped me through a very difficult time. They were consistently sensitive in how they dealt with everything. They were especially wonderful at the Celebration of Life held in their chapel and reception room; Geneva took care of all last-minute details (such as finding an electrical outlet where needed)---even passing out our printed programs and photocopying them when we ran out. My only suggestion to Spangler is, if your customer asks for the use of a piano at a function, please explain that what you provide is not a real piano but a small portable keyboard with no pedals. All in all, however, I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to everyone at Spangler. read more

This is from my experience with Spangler about 10 years ago. My grandmother passed after a short battle with cancer around 2 am. We called Spangler and they sent someone out to pick her up. The man arrived in a nice, clean and pressed shirt, well groomed and EXTREMELY RESPECTFUL to both my family and my grandmother. He was really gentle with her and was kind of enough to respect her person. We had a small memorial service and the staff was really nice and helpful with the services. I wasn't involved with the planning and arrangements - that was another family member's job, so I can't speak as to the prices and all that. I would use them again, should the need arise. Elizabeth K. was very helpful and clear with the costs, which in my book were WAY out of line, the only things they did was pick our loved one up at the local airport, get a permit and transfer to a local cemetery. This came to close to $3000!! FOR WHAT!!! I talked to Tim trying to lower the costs a bit, and I didn't find him very friendly, almost rude and a bit upset that I was removing an item. I believe I will choose a different mortuary next time. read more
