This restaurant is for sure 5 stars in my book. Will rate it more if I could! The atmosphere is amazing. The owner is so kind and super hilarious! The cashier was so kind and helpful pointed out which one she likes the most and which one she recommended! My husband got the toro loco and it was BOMB! super Delicious and fresh. Had stopped for a bite to eat and treat to go. Hamburger were really good but cooked through. Fried mushrooms were not what I expected but they were good. Onion rings were good. My husband and I went here June 24, 2018. We both hated it. He got a hamburger that was the most bland thing we had ever tasted. The hamburger tasted like it was just boiled meat and didn't have any flavor at all. Along with that, I got a chili cheese dog there that was the most pitiful thing ever. The bread kept falling apart and there was more chili than hot dog if that's even possible. The cheese looked old on it. I couldn't finish it because it tasted like it was reheated in the microwave. We waited so long for our food to get there, only for it to taste disgusting. We read so many good reviews about this place but we left extremely disappointed. I tried this place for the first time and was disappointed with my " Philly cheese steak" that I order. This so call Philly Cheese Steak was an imposter, no where near to a true Philly cheesesteak style hoagie sandwich. What I order resembles more of a shredded brisket or pull pork texture and they used yellow cheese, you can get away with yellow cheese instead of the traditional provolone or American cheese (white cheeses) but the unfortunate problem was the minimal use of cheese. You could barely see the cheese and when you mixed it with the shredded meat it disappeared and boom!!, no more cheese. Also no bell pepper or mushrooms. I was truly really disappointed because I wanted a cheesesteak but nevertheless I tried the sandwich, hunger got the best of me, it was super bland, No Flavor At All. Forcing myself to eat this abomination at least half way, trust me it was a challenge. Spoke with the manager to at least educate him on what consist of a real Philly cheesesteak style hoagie and his excuse which I quote, "we've been open 15 years and nobody has complained" which I seriously doubt that, lol. To his credit he was not rude or mean matter of fact everybody In this establishment was nice . Spanky if reading this, you need to rename this sandwich to better fit what you're selling because it's false advertisement plain and simple. read more

I've been here several times and always thought it was pretty good food, BUT this time when we started eating our Salad there was a roach inside mixed in the the veggies and stuck to cheese. Extremely disgusting!!! What's worse is I called the business up about 20 mins, after picking up our food, to ask for a refund and said I had taken pictures and would even be willing to take the salad and the Owner stated that since it had been 20 mins already they didn't know for sure if that was what really happened (as if I have time to be messing around taking back a partially eaten salad just to fight for my $20 back). Long story short the Owner refused to refund me my money, so I am posting this for all to see how disgusting Spankys really is behind the scenes. Manager who I first spoke to also was extremely rude and defensive, as if he knew for a fact I had to be lying and refused to believe me until I said I had pictures and I still had the salad with me then he forcefully gave me some half-@$$ apology. Spanky's is a casual burger and hot sandwich place near downtown Brownsville. It is pretty much the only non-chain burger place in Brownsville that was recommended to me (besides Big daddy's which I have not tried yet) and I am a huge burger fan, so I tried it. I had the avocado burger (swiss, avocado, pickles, lettuce, tomato, mustard) and a side of fries for about $7. I enjoyed the meal and liked how the burgers and fries tasted freshly made and not like they were frozen and dumped onto a grill and into a fryer respectively. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice: lots of light, many tables. I few notes on my review: I am giving Spanky's 4 stars for burgers in Brownsville, but would probably give them 3 stars if they were located in any larger city. Burgers in Brownsville tend to suck. Like, a lot. Restaurants have a tendency to overcook their meat and not ask how you want the burger done. They just assume well done is the answer. Wrong, meat chefs. So wrong. Medium or medium rare is how to cook a burger. Spanky's was guilty of this well done meat problem. They did not ask how I wanted my burger done (even though they cook to order) and when I bit into the patty it was certainly still juicy and not some dried out mess from mcdonalds, but I want to see pink in that meat! My one recommendation for them (and would put them at 4 stars in any city to me) would be to make the meat patties slightly thicker and let customers specify how they want the meat done and then actually serve according to medium-rare/medium/well done specifications. read more

Probably the best bin chain burger place in Brownsville. The location is relatively easy to get to but the parking is limited and tight. The menu has expanded. We are always looking for the best burger in town. Spanky's serves a really good one. We ordered classic burgers to test out the restaurant and loved the results. The hamburger patty was hand formed--not frozen or pre-pressed. The meat was very juicy and tasty. We ordered the doubles and they were plenty. The combo came with fries and a drink. The fries were piping hot and had a great flavor. No added seasoning and that's what we like so you can actually taste the potato. Service was friendly and efficient. We will be back! read more
