We were in town to see the wife's family and decided to give this place a random try. I was surprised. It was brunch time on a Saturday. They were not very busy but the food was surprisingly good. My wife had the egg white omelet that she said was very good. My wife is also a coffee snob and was pleasantly surprised to find that she loved theirs. I had eggs over easy, scrapple with homefries and it was all good. My two year old had French toast and devoured it so I assume she loved it. A must try here surprisingly is the homemade bread that you can request for toast. All this and only paid $22. The service here is quick and friendly. read more

My husband and I were driving from Shirleysburg, PA back to Cleveland and decided to use Yelp to find something fun and could not be more pleased with Spanky's although we did have to drive around the block to find the Courthouse. :-) I had the corned beef, home fries, and eggs over easy. My husband had two eggs, home fries, and links. The best is the homemade bread - huge planks of yummy goodness. The creamed chip beef and sausage gravy platter going by looked steamy and yummy too. We travel from Georgia to different states every year but only occasionally write a review. This cafe deserves this review. The food was delicious and plentiful. I had scrapple, eggs, and thick homemade toast. Absolutely delicious. Toast was an inch thick. My husband ordered the creamed chipped beef over home fries. Lots of meat in his meal. Probably the most beef I've seen in this dish ever. The service was fast and very friendly. Prices are very reasonable. My meal was just $5.75 and my husband's was $8.00. Just passing through town when we literally stumbled upon this place. This is everything you would expect of a hometown dinner. The atmosphere was clean and comfortable with a huge hometown vibe. The patrons were mostly local folks out to grab breakfast with their friends and family, and yes, everybody knew their names! We were welcomed in and made to immediately feel part of the family. The food was copious and very satisfying. Homemade breads and real corn beef hash, meat and potatoes (not the canned type). Wish we had a place like this in our hometown. If you are passing through town and need a home cooked breakfast, lunch or dinner, we highly recommend! Our Reuben was fresh and so well made. The Cole slaw was some of the best I've ever eaten...great place to stop while traveling along I 80.

After reading a review that said "Largest omelet...." that's all it took for me to head that direction. But my experience was horrible. Long story short, our waitress forgot to take our order, then forgot our meals were in the window, forgot coffee refills, and then forgot the check. My coffee ran dry several times, and I was asked in the middle of breakfast rush hour if "will you want another cup later, I'll put another pot on?" I mean it's the breakfast rush, there should never be a dry coffee pot in the joint! Of course I'll want a refill. Well that refill never came. My potatoes/hash browns were cold. And last put not least getting the check took forever. $22 for breakfast of three, and i hand her $30. "Do you want your change back?"....... are you kidding me No go ahead and keep six dollars for yourself!!! She received a dollar, and the establishment receives 1 Star. Maybe if you live in that little town, where like cheers everyone knows your name service might be different. read more

Found this place by chance on a coast to coast roadtrip. It is a local's cafe, where everybody meets for breakfast before going about their daily lives. Huge portions, good price, delicious food. The waitress we had was friendly and attentive to our needs. It pays to drive off the fwy, and explore the towns that line it. I'll be back someday. read more

Just traveling through after a Penn State vs Ohio State football game. On a Sunday morning for breakfast my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast! The usual things that other breakfast diners offer but few establishments ever get it right. Home fries, biscuits and gravy. Very few restaurants can equal what was served up for us this morning. This was a good way to end a great weekend in Pennsylvania! Nice waitress and friendly patrons. The bread was homemade as well as I'm sure the gravy. Home fries were not the frozen variety. If you are traveling through and want to experience something other than Denny's or Waffle House it is definitely worth the 15 minutes out of the way! Five stars is what I give it because I cannot give Six! read more

Best breakfast in town. One of the only places left where you can really sit down and eat a home cooked breakfast. The cream chipped beef is great. My friends and I would bike here all the time as kids and get wings, believe it or not. Friendly staff and great prices. I was recently in town over 10+ years later and took my grandparents for breakfast. Hasn't changed at all, luckily. Can't wait to go again when I'm visiting next time. Went for a quick breakfast on a weekday and it wasn't too busy, we were able to sit at a table right away. The waitress was so friendly and the service was very quick. Delicious coffee and omelettes...but the homemade toast???? It was so delicious that I am still thinking about it days later. It was so thick and fluffy and soft and just so delicious, I can't say enough good things about it! I found out when paying that they sell it by the loaf to take home too. Stumbled across this place when getting off Interstate 80 looking for breakfast. Went into the downtown area to have a look and it was quiet in town. We saw a postman walking delivering his mail, rolled down window and asked his advice for best breakfast in town. He said two blocks down and on the right at Spanky's, best you'll ever have. He was right! Best eggs over easy with 1" thick fresh made whole wheat luscious toast and best corned beef hash (chunky peices of corned beef and potatoes - not a mash of goo) I have ever had! Decor is out of the 50s and it was cold inside on December 29 so most people kept their coats on to eat, but it was so worth stopping to eat here and the price was extremely reasonable ($6). We bought two extra loaves of bread to take home! Can't wait until we drive through PA again and can eat there! read more

Probably the worst service I've ever had going out to eat took 30 minute just too get a drink and a hour just to get breakfast food would not recommend going here endless you have no plans for the day and just wanna sit there and wait for food all day. I have worked in the food service as a server and feel the most important thing is customer service. The server was incredibly annoyed to even be serving us, no smile. We felt rushed to get out of there and she was irritated by my order. The chicken sandwich was just a piece of chicken and two slices of bread. She never asked how I wanted my burger cooked. I was not impressed at all. Everyone has bad days, servers need to at least slap on a smile until quitting time read more

This was by far our worst restaurant experience. We were traveling with our two kids and wanted to eat at a local place instead of the typical fast food options. We enter the restaurant which was less then 1/2 fill at 1:00 and waited 45 minutes for our food (two sandwiches and 4 tacos). When our food was delivered one sandwich was missing some toppings. When we asked the kind waitress if their was anything that could be done considering our wait and the error she came back and said the owner would not do anything. We then asked to speak with the owner. The owner came out and imdately said, "Oh, what you want a discount for your missing cheese!" She completely missed the point. We had a bad experience and she came to argue, "oh, i'll take $0.25 off your bill" instead of smoothing things over.
