Visited Sparta restaurant on Memorial Day and they did not disappoint. For starters them being open was amazing and the prices are very affordable. Upon entering we were promptly greeted and sat. We had a fantastic server that ensure we were taken care of although it wasn't busy due to the holiday. I had the breasted chicken and upgraded to white meat only, and broccoli. For the starter I had a salad and it was just very basic nothing to highlight, I maybe could have gotten an alternative dressing to make it better. The broccoli also wasn't anything to rave about unfortunately either. However the chicken and fries were extremely delicious and filling. Overall I'd definitely go back and would highly recommend this spot. I'd recommend not upgrading to broccoli though and trying a different dressing than the balsamic vinaigrette. read more

We got in to the restaurant and was seated right away drinks came right after that and our order came in about 5 minutes. That was so fast. I had a skillet but it was awesome. Definitely the best spot for breakfast lunch and diner in Sparta. A family owned restaurant with great customer service. The place gets pretty packed on Sundays and I don't blame them. Most of the food here has been freshly prepared and always hit the spot for myself and the rest of my coworkers. My favorite has been the house breakfast skillet. It will definitely hold you up for a long time. Portion sizes are very big, especially the country's fried steak! which is one of the favorites in my group. Really spacious restaurant and wanted to try some of the pies but was so full after my meal! The food was very good. The restaurant was clean and very well run. I in fact received a free piece of pie for my birthday from the Manager ( maybe owner ). The big negative for us was that our waitress was clearly not happy that my wife is Asian. She was engaging with all other guests. She just abandoned our table. They had plenty of choices and everything we tried was good. The soups were hot and well seasoned. The pork chop dinner was well cooked and not dry. Normally we have pretty good service and their breakfasts are yummy but the last two times we've went I ordered salads and both times the lettuce was sub par. Wilted and brown. Not appetizing at all! It was incredible that this restaurant was packed on a Saturday mid-afternoon. I had heard it was the best restaurant in town, and by the number of people there it must be! Service was quite fast for how many people were there. The waitress brought warm, fresh, homemade bread and spread - it was SO GOOD and definitely homemade. I opted for the baked cod and side of mashed potatoes and vegetable. My portion was generous. The cod was cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were topped with a delicious gravy, and the corn was cooked to a point where it tasted like it was taken off the cob and not swimming in butter. The service was great and we didn't feel rushed. Prices were extremely valuable. The atmosphere is that of a Perkins or Country Kitchen, but the food is MUCH better. I've been going to the Family Restaurant my whole life and it's really never done me wrong. Even when they're crazy busy, which can be often, service is quick & food is good. I change up what I get often, their chicken tenders are always fantastic & I love the Alaskan Waffle for breakfast. Everything is definitely great for the prices. Good family restaurant with big portions and cheap prices. We walked over from our hotel in the same parking lot. I had the pork chop, which was bone in a flame grilled, which I was not expecting. Salad left a lot to be desired, so I recommend soup if you're having dinner here. Our bill came to $20 for two full meals, so I don't have much to complain about.... besides slow service, but I believe that was a miscommunication between servers as to who had our table. We must have arrived on a very bad day, or perhaps there has been a radical changing of the guard. I just can't comprehend such a reversal of such a history of good experiences. Yesterday was an offensive disappointment and a waste of our time. We arrived expecting the usual ambiance, speed of service, friendliness, competence, preparedness and attention to detail. I already knew what I wanted to order, and my wife had an order in mind as well. We stood and waited in a nearly empty restaurant while one waitress randomly and PARTIALLY cleared and cleaned dirty tables and another actually waited on seated customers. In all the years I've been eating here, from time to time, I'd never seen this one waitress that was bussing. I have NEVER seen such scatterbrained incompetence in bussing tables either, and I moonlighted in food service for 20 years besides my management years. There were racks in part of the dining room that made it look more like a work area than a dining room. Most of the guests (few though there were) looked perturbed. They're NEVER unhappy. I didn't know what to expect and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Was this a sick joke or what? We stood there for about five minutes, during which not one table was completely cleared and cleaned, including the one that this skittery, scampering waitress, who acted like a first-day rookie, brought us to. There was still spilled water on the table, no napkins, no silverware, and we ordered coffee and orange juice as we sat down, hoping to reduce the wait. The waitress acted like we were a burden and an interruption of her more important work.She was rude, terse and unaware of her surroundings and options.The coffee she brought (and spilled) was unsatisfactory but was okay with cream (I am a black-coffee-only drinker). She didn't seem to care. We waited ten minutes for her to come back to our table and take our order, no new customers had arrived in this usually busy time of the morning. With my order, I asked her for garlic rye toast. I *ALWAYS* have garlic rye toast there. It is very easy for any competent cook to accommodate that request, and EVERY competent wait-person there knows that. There have been times when they saw me coming and already knew to make it that way. The waitress was beyond clueless and couldn't figure out what I was ordering. I re-explained it and re-explained it, as politely as possible, no unkind words, no harsh tone or demeanor, and she acted like I shouldn't even be there. Finally, five minutes later, she brought me a souffle cup of garlic salt and proceeded to lecture me about it. I said that was fine and I would look forward to my meal. Five minutes later she tersely told me they couldn't make my order because a key ingredient was missing, which ANY competent waitress would already have known before I ordered, so I asked her for a different order, again, politely, despite her abject lack of manners and professionalism. Then we looked at the time and realized we no longer had the time to wait there for this shoddy service, so I asked for the bill for our drinks and we prepared to leave. The cashier repeatedly told me there was no need for us to pay for our drinks. After several attempts to pay for them in good faith, we walked out the door, whereupon Miss Manners chased us down as though we were deadbeats and declared loudly, in front of other arriving guests, who promptly drove away, that I had "been nothing but rude" to her. I explained to her that we were happy to pay for the drinks, had offered repeatedly to do so, and had not been the least bit rude to her despite her deplorable customer service. She said she had been waiting tables for 25 years and knew her job. I said that she should have known how to provide BASIC customer service and sent my wife in to pay the bill, since Miss Manners didn't seem to have a problem with her. We had to scramble and pick up second-rate fast-food somewhere else. I don't plan to go back there for a while. I still can't believe that horrible experience from this place. It makes no sense. Clearly she had a bad day, but she has no right to take it out on the guest. If I ever return and get that horrid level of service, I will certainly not be so low-profile as this in publishing my experience. Shape up. There is no excuse for that behavior. read more

Food did not live up to the reviews we had read. It was bland and overcooked. My order was incorrect but I would rather not complain, so I left it as is. The beer batter fish tasted fine, but it was not crispy and could have used more seasoning. Every thing tasted like it came out of a can. The bread basket was 2 slices of wheat bread and 5 packets of crackers. For what dining is available here I guess it would be acceptable. read more

It's still awesome. We walked over from the hotel and got seated right away. The staff is super friendly. I was glad to see it doing well - the place was packed. I got a hamburger and a cup of their creamy chicken soup. LOVED the soup. I'm always on the look-out for good creamy chicken soups - wild rice, especially. This was great and I wish I'd gotten a bowl. The burger was tasty. Nice big serving. Plenty of fries. My husband ordered an omelet with a waffle and the waffle was the size of a dinner plate. Our son got chicken and fries and cleaned his plate. Everyone left full and happy. Still haven't tried their wonderful looking pies. Next time. :) read more

We stopped in this morning and they weren't very busy and the waitress took 5 minutes to come to us and all she did was drop off water and left. We waited another 5 minutes and still no waitress. We used to like coming here but they will no longer get our business. All she had to do was take a drink order and go from there. We took our business to the Greenwood Cafe in Tomah. Worked a long day and wanted a good home-style cooked meal. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I ordered beef dumpling soup, salad, and baked turkey dinner.
