Cannot recommend this place highly enough! I have had PT a few years ago and found it to be so unhelpful that I simply stopped going. I really didn't have much faith in PT after that. I recently had two injuries one of which put me in extreme pain, both of which I was worried were permanent. On my first day at Spear, I was very happy to learn that both could be repaired through massage and proper types of exercises. Charles not only explained to me in detail what was going on with my injuries, but was able to pinpoint many, many exercises that I could actually feel working the EXACT spots that needed it. During massage as well, he had the uncanny ability to find the exact muscle that was spasmed(sp?) or tight and get it to release. No matter how miniscule or ridiculous my feedback or questions felt regarding an exercise, a pain, or even a sensation, he always listened attentively and took anything I had to say very seriously. This established a balance between our observations which gave him the ability to further focus on which muscles needed work and how, and made me eventually understand what had lead to the injuries and how to avoid them in the future. Often an exercise he would prescribe felt like something a specific muscle had needed for years. I was consistently impressed with his knowledge and precision. Not only was I able to recover relatively quickly from my injuries, but I also gained insight into proper alignment and use of the injured areas which I had been doing improperly for years. Spear not only facilitated my healing, but also changed my understanding of how my body works and to use it properly. It is almost a blessing that I was injured in order to gain this knowledge. All of the staff was consistently cheerful, helpful, and sometimes very funny, a good atmosphere to be in while injured, and a very inspiring one in which to work your way back to health. After experiencing severe hip and thigh pain last winter that was preventing me from working out (I'm an avid runner and biker), I was x-rayed and diagnosed with a bony abnormality in my hip (and possibly a torn labrum). My doctor referred me to Spear and I started working with Jake. From my first visit there, the experience was phenomenal. Jake helped me physically recover, through the combination of exercises and manual therapy techniques he used, and also helped me regain my confidence. I had gotten to a point where I thought I might never be able to run again. After a couple months of working with him, I was well on the road to recovery, running short distances, biking pretty long distances and lifting weights regularly. He gave me some great take-home exercises and routines so that I could continue to work toward full health on my own. A few weeks after ending my PT at Spear, I could run my goal distances (2-3 miles) again pain free. A few months later, I'm up to 5-7 miles still with no pain. I continue to use many of the stretches and exercises Jake gave me for maintenance or if any of my symptoms flare up. They seem to work every time. I would highly recommend Spear (and Jake in particular). The staff were all friendly and Jake was highly personable. They handled quite a few issues with my insurance company with ease as well. If I ever find myself injured again, I'll definitely be going back. read more

Where would I be without Spear?! At the behest of my doctor, I signed up for PT at Spear to heal hip and neck issues. I was highly skeptical at first about the benefits of PT, but I am thrilled to share how wrong my skepticism was. I was fortunate to me matched with Steve, who specializes in Hip and Neck/shoulder issues. Steve has incredible touch, smarts and intuition that helped identify the problem, and provides ample personal attention that I have heard is rare at other PT places. Steve had a genuine interest in improving my health, and was there for me on multiple occasions when I had "emergency" pain, squeezing in a time slot to help get me better that day. He would even encourage me to text him at off hours and weekends if I had any issues or questions. This particular aspect was important as there are plenty of "at home" exercises on the path to recovery. Importantly, Steve never pressured me, and even worked with me to find ways to reduce the amount of time spent on-site to work with my time and budget. It is beyond refreshing to have this kind of personal care, particularly in today's healthcare landscape. The rest of the staff I have interacted with is also incredibly friendly. The facilities are impeccably clean, and importantly, very conveniently located in midtown. In other words, go to Spear! You won't regret it. read more

I had an accident that caused a shoulder injury - a SLAP tear. I was very concerned about the arthroscopic surgery and the long recovery that I was reading about but I decided to do it anyway. Luckily, quickly after the surgery, I stared my physical therapy with Jason Ury at SPEAR PT office at 44th street. The gym space is nice, well organized and everyone is very friendly and pleasant. I was able to see progress each day and I quickly started feeling better - much faster than I expected. Two and a half months after my surgery, at the beginning of the follow up appointment with my surgeon, I asked if he thought that I had recovered enough to go on a skiing trip the following week. My doctor thought that it was a ridiculous idea - that was before he examined my strength and motion. After examining me he seemed surprised and corrected himself saying that he didn't expect this type of recovery and that I actually had recovered enough to go skiing. My surgeon is an arthroscopy specialist; for him to say that I recovered much faster than expected confirmed that I had immense luck with Jason as my physical therapist. Less than 3 months after my surgery, I had a full and healthy recovery; thanks to the dedicated professionals at SPEAR PT, I was skiing down the Alps - the best trip ever. read more

I did prehab and rehab here with Amelia over the span of about 6 months for a hip labral tear repair and pincer femoroacetabular osteochondroplasty that I had done at HSS. Having worked with handfuls of other physical therapists over the years for various injuries, I can honestly say that Amelia is the most involved and caring PT I have ever encountered. First and foremost, Amelia goes far beyond her core job responsibilities. She put in A LOT of extra time with me and was always extremely responsive to texts/email/etc., even on weekends. This, along with her charisma and compassionate attitude while treating you truly makes you feel like she is invested in you reaching your goals, as your success is her success. In addition, as a former DI athlete Amelia brings a lot to the table in terms of general fitness knowledge outside of physical therapy. It is very unique to find a physical therapist who understands your PT goals as related to training and athletic performance. She was a huge resource to me in this regard and was an awesome role model. She is also constantly pursuing various other forms of continuing education to better her treatment methods and expand her knowledge base. Amelia is extremely knowledgeable, hard working, and hands-on. I highly recommend her. read more

Tore my ACL and went to a PT location near my apt (UES) out of convenience. Went to my first post-op appt and asked my doctor if he could refer me to someone to rehab my ACL and referred me to Justin at SPEAR. A lot of PT's tell you what you want to hear and then give you 10 minutes of input and give you exercises for you to do on your own. Justin is hands-on and gives you honest input. I wanted a fiery, energetic PT who pushed me to achieve results. Usually chicken sandwiches and awesome guacamole excite me, but rehabbing torn ACL's excites Justin. While a lot of PT's cut your time short or want to get you out for their next appt, he encourages me to come in earlier to get extra work done while he works with his regular scheduled patient. Who else would you want to go to? Easily the best decision ever. Facility is excellent and everything that you need (considering it's a midtown NYC office). Staff and PT Aide's (especially Johanna and Sameek) are personable, friendly, and genuinely give a shit about getting you back to 100%. I hardly write reviews but such was the professionalism, expertise and welcoming nature of the staff that I had to share the experience. I worked with Justin and Cathy mainly, but had several sessions with others too (Kaitlin, Jeremy, Jason, Amelia, and Arielle). They not only gave clear advice and instruction on how to improve my current situation but explained the medical and physiological reasons behind it. This was my second surgery, my first being in the UK. The UK physiotherapist was very good and I had an awful experience with one in the US (not part of the SPEAR group). The SPEAR team are by the best experience I have had. The locations around Manhattan are so convenient to get to, the opening hours are extremely accommodating to a busy work schedule and the flexibility of the staff to move appointments at a moments notice was very much appreciated. They pushed me and challenged me in just the right way to get me to back to where I needed to be. I cannot recommend them enough. I will be forever grateful to my surgeon for recommending this SPEAR location and expert PT Phaeleau Cunneen for my post-surgical physical therapy after a complex right elbow reconstruction due to a devastating injury. From the time I first consulted with Phaeleau about a plan for restoring movement and range of motion, I was confident that I would eventually recover because of his positive attitude. Once I began regular sessions, the process got under way with results that helped me to stay focused and motivated throughout the weeks of recovery. I have been to other PT facilities over the years and this one is the best I have encountered. The atmosphere is upbeat, the staff greeted me warmly every session and expressed an interest in my progress. I personally learned alot from Phaeleau about how to manage my particular recovery challenges and how to do exercises on my own. He was encouraging and resourceful. Overall, my experience at SPEAR was such that I was sorry for it to end, though the end meant I was next to normal and I give them credit for my success. read more

I tore my ACL in February 2015 and was faced with the prospect of surgery to fix it, which wld have entailed several months of rehab. I was initially referred by my orthopedist to another physical therapist who was significantly more expensive, and in searching for more affordable options I found a Spear location on 44th street just a few blocks from my office. Jacob and his colleagues were brilliant, from the friendly faces at the front desk to the other therapists who would always jump in and help if Jacob was busy with other patients- it's a great team atmosphere there, and they all seem genuinely invested in a successful outcome for their patients. Jacob gradually ramped up the intensity level of the PT as my joint was still not flexible enough for the surgery, and when I eventually went back to the surgeon he concluded that I did not need surgery after all. The knee has continued to heal and I am now back on the tennis court- huge thanks to Jacob and his team for all their help and encouragement- I am now fitter than before the injury! read more

This is long overdue... After an arthroscopic knee procedure I was an absolute mess and am now far less so! Post-surgery I was walking with a cane; was incredibly swollen; in pain; and had little to no muscle tone. In came Mr. Justin Farnsworth to the rescue. He is an amazing P.T. Justin does a great job and seems to genuinely care about his patients' progress. He is easy to talk to and answered any and all questions no matter how ridiculous, in a clear, realistic, and informative manner. He pushed me and helped me stay positive. Although my recovery was a slow and arduous process, after a few months I improved immensely. Even when all was said and done he did the nice gesture of setting me up with exercises to continue on my own. Also, I should mention all other staff I encountered are incredibly nice! Although physical therapy is not something I hope to repeat again, if it has to happen I would definitely go back to Spear! read more

Messed up my shoulder flipping on a trampoline. Yeah I'm that guy. First Doc wanted to operate, in 2 months when he got back from vacation. Needless to say I got a second opinion. Second Doc sent me to SPEAR for physical therapy. This was the BEST recommendation that could have been made. Carisse Graham is an amazing PT. As an athlete I've spent a lot of time in PT. This clinic is professional, friendly, organized and prompt. They don't tell you to bounce a ball in a corner and forget about you. They take time with each patient and really watch what you're doing to get you better FAST. If I would have done surgery I'd have been out for the season but with 2 months of PT under Carisse's direction - I'm ready to hit the slopes to test my flipping skills on the mountain. So that'll be fun. Bottom line I can't recommend SPEAR highly enough. And try to get Carisse, she'll get you back out there fast! read more

After my MVA in 2013, I still had dysfunction to multiple injured areas. I suffer with multiple cervical disc herniations, shoulder tear, and TMD ( known as TMJ , with a dislocation and recapture ). It has been incredibly difficult to find a PT like Amelia Rivera who specializes in TMD in NYC. Amelia not only understands the dysfunction, but also identifies the correlation between the cervical spine injuries and TMJ. In my treatment course, I have been able to strengthen my TMJ, cervical spine and relieve my chronic pain associated with this disorder including occipital neuralgia. Amelia is professional, "gregarious" and extremely focused on her patients well being and advancement. The office is well maintained and office staff is very accommodating. If you are are looking to get back to your active lifestyle and to your best self after injury, I highly recommend Amelia Rivera and Spear Physical therapy! read more

I had an excellent experience with SPEAR, and I recommend them for any physical therapy needs. I worked with Joe Costello for a few months on a persistent knee pain that has bothered me for years. Pain would come and go, but it generally came on due to exercise. I can now say that I have been pain free since finishing my course of treatment a few weeks ago. I have learned to change my gym habits -- I avoid the specific exercises that caused me pain -- and I've incorporated the exercises that I learned during my time at SPEAR as preventative measures. (I also do a lot of yoga now to keep my joints healthy). It's important to find someone like Joe and a place like SPEAR because you're going to spend a few sessions a week with them, perhaps for months. And their office culture is great. All of the therapists are very welcoming and warm, regardless of whether they are treating you. A++ for these folks. read more

The SPEAR team is the best experience I've ever had with physical therapy. As an elite athlete training for the 2016 Olympics in fencing, I came to SPEAR from great recommendations from my teammate. Cathy is a rock star. She has tailored so many exercises to the odd body demands of fencing and whenever I'm in the office I have a smile on my face. All the therapists, aides, and front desk team know every patient by name and everyone is friendly. There's a ton of 1 on 1 attention, which is rare to find in PT in New York. With such an athletic staff background (elite gymnasts, ironman-ers, marathoners, long distance runners) I feel not only supported in my own athletic endeavors, but also inspired. The front desk is extremely helpful and always attentive to figuring out all insurance questions. And the massage therapist, Cat, is the best masseuse I've ever had. SPEAR is fantastic. I had gone to SPEAR for rehab on my elbow before and after surgery and worked with Amelia. She was great -- not only did she help me with strengthening and recovery, she helped me stay mentally focused since my injury was chronic causing me grief for several years at that point. She was very knowledgeable about the muscles, tendons and ligaments involved in the elbow explaining things to me over the course of my therapy. She customized the therapy program for ME which is an important indicator of receiving proper care. Everyone's situation is different and SPEAR's methods seemed to focus on each individual patient. I have been to many PTs before and I found the environment at SPEAR to be the best. You get proper attention and everyone is friendly and pleasant. I hope I don't have to go to PT again but if I did I would definitely go there. read more

Before visiting SPEAR I had been to 3 other physical therapists for my acl tear and I can easily say that SPEAR was by far the best. I have a background in science, so I had done a lot of research on acl tears and treatments, and before SPEAR, I felt that every other PT I visited knew less about the topic than me and was basically giving me cookie-cutter answers. Working with Austin at SPEAR, I found him extremely knowledgeable as well as up to date with the latest research and rehabilitation approaches. He followed up with me regularly and was always available to answer (my numerous) questions. He also referred me to a surgeon at the HSS who was highly qualified. Spear PT has greatly improved my quality of life. I used to dread even minor physical activity because of terrible pain and reduced range of motion in my shoulder and knee. I considered undergoing joint replacement and then my orthopedist sent me to Spear and Carisse and the other members of their team enabled me to return to working out, swimming, jogging and hiking. They've not only significantly reduced my pain but have also helped me regain balance, restoring my self confidence. I've been to other PT centers over the years but none had a staff that were this pleasant nor did they take such a personal interest in me and my condition like the folks at Spear. I finished physical therapy today at this location. Jason Ury help me rehab from a fractured ankle. Jason is fantastic and a thorough professional. He has a lovely calm demeanor and I always felt encouraged to work hard and do all the exercises at home. I really would recommend Jason as a very knowledgeable and caring person. I did not find going to rehab at SPEAR a chore. The staff is wonderful from the team at the Front Desk to the young assistants Justin S. and The Entertainer, Johnny Efstathiades, who are both very helpful. Johnny is so much fun and he cheers everyone with his quick wit and one liners. There is a great atmosphere at this location which helps ease the tough work necessary for improvement. I tore my meniscus and it didn't heal as quickly as I thought, so I had to go to PT. I had painful bumps at the incision sites, and I wasn't able to get full extension on my knee. I went to PT at SPEAR twice a week for 10 weeks with Jacob Weissman. He was fantastic. He knows how hard to push you in each visit, and varies the exercises in each visit so that it does not get too monotonous. After 10 weeks, I was back to playing all the sports I had played pre-injury. And even though most of the people at the facility don't want to be there, by definition, since they've had an injury that requires rehab, it's actually quite a positive and fun environment because the staff is friendly, and helpful, and keeps the environment light. read more
