Nasty nasty nasty. Worst haircut ever. I brought a photo of a simple cut I wanted and the person must have needed glasses. It was so bad she stopped me a few days later in a store and apologized. The owner has a horrible attitude. read more

Thank you Elaine!! After a horrible, traumatic, botched color job, Special Effects saved the day... and not only that but did it in record time as this was last minute! Best place in East Hampton to get a hair cut if you're looking for great color and cut at a reasonable price. If you're looking for a "vibe" and pretension then go elsewhere. If you want an honest cut and color then Special Effects is your place. If you're like me and don't like sitting in a chair for hours on end, ask for Julie. She'll get you in and out in no time. read more

I had a pedicure there and found Margo to be excellent. However there were not enough COVID precautions, for example, they said they would take temp upon entry, did not; owner wore clear face shield without mask ( CDC says insufficient protection for others), and she spoke loudly out loud about taking enough precautions, saying if some people were unhappy with her precautions, they " should not come to her shop, just stay home and wrap themselves in Saran Wrap", etc. This did not make for a comfortable experience although I would highly recommend the technician who did my pedicure. read more

Special effects is wonderful and I highly recommend it. Recently, I worked with Elaine and she was amazing in turning my long drab grey/dark brown hair into beautiful lustrous blond. I've gotten compliment after compliment! In addition, the salon is squeaky clean and it appropriately safeguarded for COVID 19 and that is very important to me. Special Effects is so much more than just a convenient neighborhood salon to get a cut, style, color or beauty treatment. It's an intimate space where there is always a friendly familiar face sitting next to you. I am always so comfortable with Elaine, the Owner, who knows my hair and what I need to get my locks in the best color condition and style. I always walk out with a big smile, a gorgeous head of hair, followed by many compliments. And no snooty attitudes or absurd prices. Love them!! read more

I love this salon and can't believe they have any bad reviews to be honest. I've been going here for years and everyone is always so friendly and helpful. I've tried out a few different colors and styles over the years and they've always done exactly what I've asked for (they've actually made a few look even better than the photos I've shown them)! Prices are fair especially for the amazing end result. I'd highly recommend this place! read more

Nothing worse than a haircutter that does exactly the opposite of what you ask for. My hair just needed a little clean up. I came out with lopsided hair that turns under rather than turning up even though we looked at a very clear photo of the style I wanted It was also two inches shorter even though I was clear about the fact that I was letting it grow out, and after the debacle they charged me $45 which I refused to pay. I am looking at 3-4 months of re-growing, after which it will have to be completely restyled. Then they called the police to report "theft of services." Seriously? This is the worst. read more

You might want to ask for general anesthesia before your hair is styled because when I went there, the stylist yanked my hair very roughly and also scratched my scalp with her rather long fingernails. The cut looked horrible, with the bangs way too short and the layers kind of haphazard, so I won't be going back. read more

I booked a 90 minute massage immediately followed by a facial that I can only describe as a religious experience (Olga was AMAZING and I recommend her highly). I have used Dr. Brandt DNA (Do Not Age) products for almost 3 years, and they suggested trying a few products from their all-natural organic Eminence skin care line. I was never a believer in products that advertised they could make you look years younger after just a few applications, particularly with ingredients that you might find a chemistry set (except maybe for my religious daily application of Retinol that my dermatologist prescribed). I can say this with reasonable certainty, Eminence products are the best I've ever used. My day cream has sunscreen mixed right in, and combined with the retinol, things are greatly improving on my desert-worn face. Check out A-Studio. An awesome spa day awaits you. This has never been the case anywhere else I have gone for pedicures- I was shocked by her comments and didn't appreciate being spoken to in this manner, most especially in front of other customers. Secondly, I was not allowed to use a Spa 27 gift card, since my appointment was booked on line with my credit card. Receptionist was rude and not willing to help with this. The back of the chair kept coming forward and crushing me and at one point she moved the chair so far back my feet no longer reached the edge. Totally oblivious. She didn't know where the callus remover, top coat or bathroom were. I asked to add on a massage to which the front desk girl said she would check it she had time. I didn't get a massage and the nail place has cleared out and she has no clients so not sure why my request couldn't be accommodated. The pedi is fine but it's also supposed to be relaxing which it was not.

Instead, at least four inches were cut, and I left with choppy, uneven layers that looked like a combination of a blunt cut and an uneven mullet. I tried styling it for a few days to see if I could make it work, but I couldn't. I was devastated. When I returned to the salon to explain the situation, one of the two stylists was there. As I was describing what had happened, the stylist who cut my hair began telling the other stylist in Spanish that I had never shown a reference photo, never mentioned the length, and never said I only wanted two inches cut. Thankfully, I understand enough Spanish to know exactly what she was saying. I told them that I absolutely had shown the reference photo and had been very specific about the length. At that point, they immediately backtracked and switched to speaking to me in Spanish. Rather than acknowledging the misunderstanding, they told me it would be too difficult to fix and that because my hair was already so short, the only way to correct it would be to cut it even shorter. I left with no solution, no accountability, and in tears. More than anything, I was disappointed to be treated as though I was lying when I had gone out of my way to communicate exactly what I wanted. I had very long hair, and this wasn't a minor trim gone wrong--it was a significant haircut that I did not ask for. I wish I could get my money back. Based on my experience, I would only recommend coming here for a blowout, not a haircut.

Truly as good as it gets. Ive been a customers of Elaine's for 20 years because she is just awesome!! I"ve had it all too...short, long, curly, straight, highlights, keratin, toners, waxing...she did my hair and makeup for my wedding (while the other amazing stylist attended to my bridesmaids)...she can do it all...and when she's not available when I"m having a "hair emergency" I"m as pleased as ever when ANYONE (talent abounds at SE) else at the shop can squeeze me in (thanks Brooke for hiding my grey! & Julie for helping my boys head to the first day of school without a mop head). And to top it all off, they have the best "nail girl" in the world (Margo)!! I hate to even mention her because she's the only one & if I can't get an appointment Im going to be bummed. The assistants are also great! Pat is quick to offer you a complimentary beverage (highly suggested the chocolate coffee :) and a cool water rinse (if you're into that). I moved from NYC, and after finding every bad and expensive salon in the Hamptons, I finally found Special Effects. Not only does my hair look better than it ever has, the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly and doesn't feel like a gossip mill. I went to some of the best salons in the city, but get more complements now then I ever did then. Brooke does my hair, as well as everyone else in my family, but if she is unavailable, I have always been pleased with whoever has covered for her. If you want some time to relax, and come out feeling like you've just had a few hours of peace, make an appointment at Special Effects. They will work around your schedule, and if I forgot to tell you, the mani/ pedi there is incredible. It's like reflexology and massage included with perfect polish. Enjoy! read more

I have been going to special effects for several years now. I live in Amityville but have family in East Hampton. Quite a few years ago when I was visiting family I stopped in for a quick trim. Elaine did such a phenomenal job cutting my hair that I have been going back ever since. I go every couple of months for a haircut and color and usually get a manicure and pedicure while I'm there. I've also had waxing and other services and I have never had less than a wonderful experience. The services are all phenomenal, the prices are reasonable, and the people that work there are friendly and fun to be around. Totally worth the trip!! read more

Special Effects is a fabulous salon. I have my hair styled, cut and colored here. My hair, which is not easy to work with is always done to perfection.The stylist/colorist really listens to me and always give me great advice on taking care of my hair. They also have the best manicurist I have ever used and offer waxing as well. The ladies at the salon are lovely. I have been using the salon for years and always look forward to seeing the girls and being pampered. If you are in or near East Hampton, give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

I've been going here for years (even though I live like an hour away) the trip is so worth it. I get the works done and leave happy every time. Can't thank the staff here enough, it is the only place I will EVER go to get my hair done and the manicurist is awesome too (the only one to ever actually paint my nails all the way to the edges and ask me if I love them before she finishes!)Totally recommend this place! read more
