I have a trunk that broke at the hinges where the lid connects. I contacted SFS and they replied quickly and told me I would have to buy the replacement hinges for the trunk and new fabric for the upholstery work if I wanted it. I wish I would have received a little guidance from them on which hinges would work best because the ones I bought weren't compatible with the trunk, but the piano hinge they ended up using works fine. The trunk came back beautifully repaired and I love upholstery work. It took almost three months to get this piece back though. We are in a pandemic, but that's a long time for a repair. read more

Solid work, terrible customer service. Missed appointments, not calling when they said they would, and charging me more than their quote are not the best customer service practices. At first I was told I'd have my couch cushion back "by the end of the week" (this was on a Monday). I called on Thursday, left a message, heard nothing back. Called Monday, finally got ahold of someone, and was told "end of the week" again - I pushed back, and the answer changed to "late tomorrow afternoon." The guy arrived early afternoon, and then charged me $125 when their first email clearly stated $120. He called the big boss, who claimed he opened his email and that it said $125. I didn't have my phone on me, but when I checked it, I saw what I had told him: $120. The $5 isn't the biggest thing in the world, but it's indicative of the kind of people that run this place: people who would lie about $5. read more

Professional, high-quality service at very fair prices. My dog ripped a decent-sized hole in one of my couch cushions. I emailed SFS through the website on a weekend and Ruben replied the same day. He explained exactly what he needed to do and answered all my questions. He came to my apartment a few days later (on time!), took the cushions, and then estimated two weeks for the job. It ended up being almost three weeks but the quality of the fix was so good that I didn't mind (also he put in extra effort to find fabric on the cushion he could reuse, rather than buying new which would have cost more). I had a very unique sectional couch that I had bought about 3 years ago that fit the space perfectly. After spending weeks and months trying to find a replacement with absolutely no luck anywhere, i started looking into getting it reupholstered. I called 8-10 different guys and not one person gave me a quote that was less than the original couch cost brand new so I decided to go ahead and have Ruben come out and take a look at the job. He came personally to look at the couch and after going through what would be required he thought he actually might have known the manufacturer for the original couch. He asked me not to get my hopes up but that he would make some calls and see what he could find. He ended up finding the couch which is 8 individual pieces!!) for a few hundred dollars more than the re-upholstery would've cost! They were even able to work with me to come deliver it at 9pm on a Thursday which fit with my work schedule. I am so very fortunate that I had a problem with a piece of furniture from Ethan Allen because they sent me Ruben of Special Furniture Services! That one job led to several more. I pulled a lamp out of my closet that had been sitting there collecting dust for 2 years because everyone said it couldn't be put back together.but not Ruben he fixed it for me as new and delivered it back to me within the week at a very fair price. The lamp now sits on my desk no longer collecting dust! Now for the big job my Dining Room table 17 years old and looked it. A longer story short once again Ruben out did himself. I have a table that looks better than when I bought it. This is a fairly large oval table when closed seating 6 with 2 leafs underneath and a large base Not a small table and not a small job. Ruben did all the research on the table in order to get the job done right. He knew more about the table and manufacturer than I did. Although the job turned out to be bigger than he anticipated he honored the price he gave me. He came along with the trucker to deliver the table personally and to make sure I was happy. I was thrilled! Ruben is responsive to your needs (which is very important to me) and very talented. I highly recommend him. Fast forward to end Jan 2016 and I noticed a problem with my dining table that Ruben had refinished. I sent him photos of the issue and yesterday Feb 2 a representative of his company came to my home and spent 5 hours on site doing the repairs needed. They explained everything beforehand and showed me all of the work they did repairing and strengthening the table. I gave Ruben a Danish modern chair to refinish and to repair the webbing on the base. The work included patching some dents and nicks in the arms, photos of which I sent to Ruben prior to his bidding on the job. In my email asking for prices, I stated "There are a few nicks but there is no need for other repairs." The chair came back nicely refinished with the webbing fixed. But none of the dents or nicks had been touched. After I complained, Ruben repaired the nicks. The repair was okay but not the quality that I would expect from a professional furniture repairer. I contact Special Furniture Services to repair an antique desk. I sent them several photos and received a quotation of $700 for its restoration. One week later I received a call from Ruben stating that I needed to pay an additional $200 fee to restore the leather top. I never received any documentation or explanation stating the extent or limitations on the restoration work. I mentioned this to Ruben. Apparently that is not how he works. When I was repeatedly asked to pay cash, I became suspicious. I offered to give them a cashier's bank check with no reply. Then I agreed to pay with my credit card along with their "additional 4% surcharge for processing". When they delivered my desk the top of it was still pot marked and quite damaged. Clearly the leather top was never fully restored. I complained to the delivery men. Their reply was "payment is cash only". I insisted on using my credit card. After taking my credit card number, they then claimed it was declined and that I must pay cash only. Again I insisted on using my credit card and I called my bank card company. The credit card company claimed no amount from Special Furniture Service had attempted a processing. Luckily, our building's handyman happened to be on our floor. He came by my apartment to let these guys know they were no longer welcome in my apartment. Shockingly, the credit card miraculously processed the total agreed fee including the 4% processing fee. I've paid the full amount demanded even though they only partially restored the antique desk. To add insult to injury, I found this whole process extremely intimidating. I've contacted the Better Business Bureau to let them know about these excessive demands for cash only. read more
