Mr yu went out of his way to fix my and it was worth the $300 dollars he even went to the home depot to to do touch up too

It's been nine years since the last time Yu fixed something for me. My review from 2015 was about some shelving/carpentry he did for me (6 stars!! - master carpenter...really). I've been looking for someone to simply install a complicated showerhead for me and Yu just finished it up for me. He really is the best - from carpentry to plumbing and probably lots of other stuff I haven't used his services for (yet...) - definitely will be using him way before another 9 years have passed. read more

Had an emergency rats related smell activities on Chinese New Year day! Needed to find someone quick to open dry walls, in addition to the exterminator. Joe responded quickly & opened up walls around the radiators. Found a large hole near a radiator, he plugged the hole with liquid foam to block the urine smell! He suggested the smell should be reduced with the plug. Patched up the wall back up, costed $400 for 3 hours of work in 2 trips! The smell continued to be there after 2 days. Proceed to ask him to return to open up the dry walls in basement. He hammered a few holes on the dry walls and left, charged me for another $300. When I asked of him to follow-up to complete the job, he was not responded. He responded to ask for payment, he claimed he completed the job. I can't tell if I ended up contacting the same Joe as everyone else. The Joe I spoke with was rude and didn't know the last thing about communication. It sounded like he was interested in the job but he was very spotty with answering my messages. We set up to meet a couple of times but it didn't work out, and that was fine - I get it, it's busy season, and schedules don't line up. But when he finally told me one day at midnight he would be able to come take a look at the apartment the next day at 5:30-6pm, I thought everything would go smoothly. I messaged him the following day to confirm because I would have needed to leave work early to meet him, but I received no confirmation. I figured he had my cell number (but he did not provide his own for me) so he could always call to let me know during the day - but I did not receive a call. I got home at 5:30-6pm and waited just in case he would come, and finally left at 6:45pm to meet friends for dinner. At 7:15pm I get a text message from Joe telling me he was on his way. When I told him I was no longer home, this was his response: "I just want to let you know I charge $50 to see a job if you're not home I'm not coming." So... Joe never confirmed he was coming. He was on his way after 45 minutes after his quoted window. He never advised there was a $50 charge. And now he's giving me attitude? I really wanted his help in 3 projects after reading all the Yelp reviews. Maybe the jobs I had were more than what he could take on and he was unloading some busy season stress onto me? My wall had a very poor plaster job done and it looked extremely uneven and the bumps were very prominent and noticeable, it looked like a mess. Now it looks brand new and so smooth! My boiler was not working so I called several handymen. Some never responded, some called the next day. I had to baby sit for my 2 year old grand daughter and was afraid she would get sick. I called Joe Wu and he came immediately. He not only fixed my boiler, he called me the next day to make sure that the boiler was still working. Rather than giving me a random quote he asked for additional pictures so he can determine what the issue really is. I had two A/C's to install. I was surprised at how fast Joe got this done. I was worrying that it was going to take weeks to find someone, and when I found this Yelp page I thought it was going to take a really long time because of all the 5 star reviews. Actually he responded within an hour or so and came over the next day. Joe got them both installed in less than an hour. He also provided his own window support brackets, which was great because I had no idea these were required by NYC law, and I hadn't purchased them ahead of time. Joe was a lifesaver in this situation because I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to assembling or installing anything. I look forward to hiring him for future projects. read more

I highly recommend Joe. We gave him a call about hooking up a dryer and ended up having him fix a multitude of our house issues. He is definitely a jack of all trade and worked relentlessly until he solved the problem. He checked every nook and cranny, and thought outside of the box until he found a solution to our problem. this is an update to my last review. I emailed Joe and asked if he can put in a lock and assemble a coat rack with shoe storage. After sending him all the pictures and info he asked for, he wanted to do it the next day at 9AM. When I texted back that I couldn't do it (on Thursday night) and if he is available the following week, he stops responding to my text and vm messages. Finally, I text and asked if he just doesn't want to do it and he said no, he doesn't. Joe is wonderful and I highly recommend! He is responsive, kind, and does great work! I had some old wallpaper that was going to be replaced. He walked me through how to take it down myself, a super tedious task as it was very old, to avoid being overcharged if I hired someone to do that portion of the project. I felt that he really had my best interest at heart and he then helped me see the project through - patching the wall and painting. I owe Joe this review, but make no mistake - this is not a conflict of interest. Joe is the worker whom my landlord sends to make respond to outrageous emergencies and make impossible repairs at the shabby Park Slope brownstone railroad apartment where I have resided for the past five years. So, our interests should be diametrically opposed - I have high demands and don't even pay him directly; he has to put up with myriad difficulties and answer both to the panicked shrilling of tenants and the bequest of the landlord for an unknown number of units and properties. The staggering list of things that Joe has done for my apartment over the years is all that's kept me from writing this review sooner. Just some of these things include: -Answering our call AND showing up around 3 to 4 a.m. last September when I woke up to frenzied knocks on the door from a tenant downstairs who alerted me to the fact that an upwelling of water was rising constantly at an alarming rate in all of our sinks, forcing us to stay awake through the night bailing it out. He answered. He arrived. He somehow figured out the problem, and stayed until it was solved -Pumping an ancient amassment of "number two" and god knows what else that had apparently clogged the cheap toilet over many years, and leaving the bathroom clean and unharmed -Replacing our toilet entirely when my ROOMMATE encountered the same issue and tried to fix it himself with a cheap snake pump from the corner store, badly scratching the interior -Replacing our toilet AGAIN (though grudgingly) when the standard model he'd purchased was too tall -Setting up mouse traps around the house when no one was even there and none of the designated exterminators could do the job when, for the first time ever, a rodent issue had emerged and I couldn't rest until something was done -Fixing my roommate's locks and screens immediately after being asked directly to do so I'm sure he's done scores of other things that I'm forgetting right now or wasn't even ever aware of. But the standout scenarios above should be enough to attest that Joe is responsive, professional, respectful, quick, clean, empathetic in his own matter-of-fact way, and most of all, effective even in the shittiest (ugh, literally) of environments. He is a miracle worker for the little people, who are supposed to just make do with expensive, slum-like conditions. He'll be there when no one else is, and achieve what others say can't be done. Make sure you're a better customer to him that I've been - give him a break and know he's a very busy man, too, resolving abhorrent issues with aplomb. Try to find a way to be there when he bends over backwards to make it. Take care that you communicate exactly what you want, and take agency in the process so as to avoid needless re-dos later that have nothing to do with his skill in completing a job/repair. And try - really try - not to take the horrors of NYC living out on him. And thank him profusely, because he really deserves it. I was in desperate need of a handyman when I saw my girlfriend's post (Jazmin T.) about Joe. She and I are very particular about who we let in our homes. She gave Joe rave reviews. I needed some handy work and plumbing in my bathroom, but could not be around to supervise. My friend informed me that Joe was reliable and could be left alone to work. Needless to say, my toilet is fixed, the tub is re-siliconed, new bath faucet installed and he even fixed a leak in my kitchen. Is he pricey, not really. You have to plan on him coming to your home for the day about 5-6 hours to work. He is a handyman and needs to earn his day's pay. If i could give 6 stars i would. Joe is hands down the most responsive and communicative contractor i have met in my 24 years of property ownership. I had a bathroom shower sheet rock repair job that I had fielded out to a few recommended handymen including one of the workmen from a job site next door . Good luck trying to find someone who will come to your home for a small job and actually show up! Or who alternatively show up, give an estimate, and then fall off which is what happened with the guy next door. At my wits end I decided to take a look on YELP. Joe had amazing reviews so I decided to give it a shot. I sent him a text, telling him how I found him, and attached a picture of my issue (see picture attached). He responded within 45 seconds! He asked if I was sure the leak was fixed? He didn't want me spending $$ on the sheet rock only to have to open it up again. I said i would get back back to him after confirming with my tenant. Joe reached out to me to follow up on the response. Usually, it's the other way around. My tenant was not 100% certain the leak had stopped and said "it looks dry to us". Given that information, Joe and I agreed on a price and some parameters around it and a guarantee to a full explanation and justification of the cost once accessed . Since this repair was for a tenant we had to find a mutually convenient time for everyone which was 9:00am on a SUNDAY morning! Joe came on time and with all materials on-hand. Once the ceiling was opened (i wish i would have taken pictures of that) we saw that the leak was still a problem. I got on the ladder myself to see the water dripping from the upper floor...and while up there I noticed that the vent for the bathroom fan (new construction - 1 year old) was not connected to anything. Together we found the source of the leak and devised a safety precaution for any overflow. Joe found the vent hose that was haphazardly pushed to the side - he opened up another space in the ceiling to reconnect the hose properly to the fan. Before any work was done we revisited the repair cost with the new information. Joe's prices are more than fair. He's not a bargain basement repairman who you would never call again. He came at 9:00am and finished after 4pm. He closed both cuts, taped, plastered and painted the entire ceiling for uniformity. His attention to detail and clean up are outstanding. I cannot detect where he made the cuts and I was there when they were done. No wonder he's a busy man. He was worth every cent...and my tenants were completely impressed by his professionalism and his demeanor. Joe is a gem of a contractor, rare and difficult to come by...- my only concern is that he's so good I hope he'll always make time for me. read more

Joe has changed in the last couple of years. When we first started to use him, he was hungry for biz, showed up quickly and was able to handle a lot of stuff. He was nice. Always stressful to work with; he comes in like a whirlwind, is in 5th gear all the time. He got the job done, usually. But never with a receipt, even when I wrote it out for him. I hired him to do over $10,000 of work in the last year, on my 2 apts upstairs. The work was good. But he was charging down into my apartment like a manic person all during the day. It was difficult to deal with, but I knew he meant well. I needed the work done. One thing was replacing a track on the first floor, where the renter had taken off a sliding door. When he replaced the track, he did not follow my instructions to reinstall the 3rd sliding door. It's an expensive set of wood doors. Instead, he followed the renter's instructions. I was not happy for that door to be at risk and asked him to install it. He refused. Since then, he doesn't return my calls, or texts, and refuses to work for me on other things. I need some sheet rock he put in replaced, but he won't do it. He was supposed to have fixed a leak, but he didn't. The leak got worse, and the sheet rock got wet. Now the wall and ceiling are open, because I had to call in a plumber. He is not willing to back up the work he did. I need that sheet rock done, and the painting (which he did, so he knows what to use.) He won't even answer my attempts to communicate. I miss the old Joe, he has clearly gotten too big and important for anything but the big jobs. And doesn't back up his work, and has left me hanging with a ceiling and wall cut open. read more

If you need ANY type of handy work done in your apartment or home, Joe is your go-to guy! I found him on Google & Yelp in search of a handyman right in my neighborhood, specifically to have some painting done and brick-styled wallpaper installed in my living room and bedroom. Making an artificial brick wall look authentic is quite a challenge, but Joe was able to exceed all my expectations. His paint work was also very neat and clean--there were no random specs to be found anywhere. He pays close attention to detail, works very quickly and diligently. He was able to finish the entire job in just two days! I trusted him with my keys and when I returned home on day 2, I was flabbergasted by his work! He is phenomenal, dependable, and affordable. Poor communication - needs to improve in customer service engagement. I had to contact Joe via email, text and Yelp messages to connect. And, he was unable to respond in a timely fashion. It took over 3 weeks to arrange for an assessment. Joe was only willing to provide a quote on the parts of the job that he was willing to undertake. I repeatedly provided the written list of things I wanted done, and the address of where the work was. Yu came up with a highly original idea for the first part, an idea that saved me a lot of money, because instead of replacing an entire shower frame whose base broke up he found an original and aesthetic solution to patch up the broken part and cover it with a nice metal frame. He completed the other parts of the job as promised in a timely manner, worked cleanly and gave me no headaches. I needed hooks installed in my extremely tall ceilings to hang light pendant lights - Joe was quick, really nice, and charged a fair price. Not responsive. After reading the positive Yelp reviews, I thought I would have no issues speaking to Joe about a few small jobs in the apartment I recently moved into. After taking the time to take and send photos of what I was looking to do per his request, I never heard back. I needed a TV mounted on a wall and so I called Home Advisors and they recommended a couple companies in bay ridge including Yu Handyman. Joe came right away with a wall mount & hung the TV. He was kind and courteous & cleaned up after himself. I have small children & live in an old building, so he was very cautious about the dust. I was so excited to meet Yu, a Brownstoner recommended handy man, we spoke at the beginning of the week, he told me to call him to remind him of our meeting for this Friday, which I did...and when we finally speak again he tells me " he charges a fee for estimating the job" He must be very busy to blow off an opportunity to meet with a prospective client, or couldn't come up with a better excuse as to why he couldn't come over. What a waste of time with him! Update: Since I posted the review, Mr Yu called me in remorse, apologized for the misunderstanding, acknowledging that he should have mentioned his "fee" up front, and made time to come over and give me an estimate ( free of charge ) The one star review was based on a misunderstanding which he has since corrected, If I give him the job, I will post a new review and hopefully raise his stars.
