After seeing Special Occasions Bakery all over social media, I had to check it out for myself. There's street parking available, and the shop is small inside with limited hours, so plan accordingly. I stopped by this past weekend (Valentine's Day weekend) to try the viral fruit desserts I'd been seeing everywhere online. Each fruit has a hard chocolate shell, and once you crack it open, it reveals layers of mousse and a jelly-like filling inside. While they're absolutely stunning and beautifully crafted, the texture combination just wasn't for me. They're priced between $13-$18 each. That said, I've tried several of their other desserts and absolutely love them. My parents even commented, "It's not too sweet," which is always a good sign! Their pastries are balanced, flavorful, and beautifully made. I definitely recommend stopping by for gorgeous and delicious desserts. Al Bunn also carries pastries from Special Occasions Bakery, so you can find some of their treats there as well.

After seeing someone post about this place on Instagram, I decided to check it out. It looks like this area is trying to bring in more businesses, which is great, but the neighborhood still feels a little wonky. Inside, it's small but bright and inviting, with some seating. It has a bit of a "jewel box" feel. There's a board listing what they offer along with prices, though not everything on the menu was available. Heads up, English might not be the first language of the staff, but they're friendly. I believe the owners are from Eastern Europe, and the pastries are absolutely stunning. I got a Chocolate Paris Brest and a hazelnut-based pastry. I tried a little of the Paris Brest first--it was tasty, with a nice chocolate mousse filling that wasn't too sweet. The hazelnut one was interesting; I couldn't quite pin down all the flavors. It looked almost like a candy bar, with a marshmallow fluff-like filling, hazelnut flavor, and actual nuts. Now, let's talk price. I get that quality costs money, but these two pastries came to over $19 with tax. A bit much. It's the kind of place I'd go to for a special treat , maybe for a birthday or something but not regularly. Would I come back? Probably, but it's definitely on the $$ side. Also, note that it's on Meigs off Monroe, and there's no dedicated parking just street parking. The more you know!

The new croissants and donuts - they recently got a new baker who does these only on Friday and Saturdays.

LOVEEEE coming here!! There is always something different going on try! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, especially when you don't know what's in them! It's a small little shop easy to miss but keep looking for it!

Me and my daughter finally tried this place and it did not disappoint. The place was nicely decorated, simple and classy. My favorite decor was the old school radio playing music. The staff and owner were very friendly and eager to explain what was in each pasty that we asked about. It was hard to pick because they all sounded so good. Prices are high but understandable with the amount of effort that goes into creating all these sweet treats. We tried the mango, raspberry, passion fruit, pistachio and raspberry tart. The mango had mango fruit filling, mango whipped cream with a white chocolate shell. The raspberry had a raspberry filling, bubblegum whipped cream with a white chocolate shell, the passion fruit had passion fruit filling, hazelnut praline, cream filling and white chocolate shell. Pistachio log had a pistachio filling and cream with white chocolate shell. The raspberry tart had a short bread crust, raspberry filling , fresh raspberries and cream on top. This was my favorite along with the passion fruit. We enjoyed everything we got and can't wait to go back.

We absolutely love the sweets here. My favorite is easily the raspberry enccliar, followed by the heart shaped passion fruit cake, and tiramisu tart (both not pictured) The store is very small, but quaint and there is some seating inside. (NO PUBLIC RESTROOM) Servers are always nice and will explain what each item is if you ask. They should add descriptions of what the treats are however. Every time we come in my S.O has to ask "what's this... what's in it... ok what's that one..." please help us save time with short descriptions of whatever treats are available that day. Otherwise we recommend this bakery to everyone!

I wanted to go for a while and I was so disappointed, the service was terrible, the lady acted like she was bothered and annoyed she had customers. We got a quite a few pastries and it would have been nice to not be treated so poorly. Mango and coffee bean were delicious the raspberry one wasn't as raspberry as you'd think and pistachio was awful for being the most expensive.

This is a raspberry mousse cake with somewhat of a creme brulee bottom in the inside it was phenomenal

We arrived within the first couple hours of opening, so there was a large selection of goods to choose from; everything looked so good! ... And if smelled wonderful too! However, I did not like that nothing had prices listed, at least not that my friends or I were able to locate. It also would have been a nice touch if they offered coffee and/or tea to go with their items... but, since they are more of a takeout bakery (only having outdoor seating), it may not make sense for them. I opted for a savory option of a breakfast sandwich made on a jalapeno scone with egg, perfectly crispy bacon and melty cheddar cheese. My friends got a pastry and a muffin. My sandwich was really tasty & fresh; I thought the price was kinda steep, coming in around $15. My one friend enjoyed her pastry. My other friend had a very hard time getting the wrapper to peel off of her muffin, losing pieces of muffin in order to remove all the wrapper. I would consider visiting again, but would really like for them to have pricing listed somewhere.

While the filling was delicious, I felt like the pastry itself was a little dry and could've used more filling. There were gaps in the middle that did not have any filling. The pastry itself was also quite expensive for what it was - it ended up being $7. The person who was at the counter was very willing to answer any questions but I think it would also be helpful to have descriptions (for some of the more uncommon pastries) and prices listed with the pastries.

All the pastries were beautifully made, and not too sweet (the pinnacle of Asian parent compliments when it comes to sweets LOL) Jasmine and pear scone: fruity, a touch of florals at the end, and very moreish. I was supposed save half for another day...let's just say that didn't happen. Lemongrass panna cotta: very light panna cotta with a layer of coconut, ginger, and lime zest encased in lemongrass jelly. The flavors are very earthy and work well together Mango sticky rice pie: I loved the crust on their pies, it's just the right thickness and the crimping is super satisfying to look at. Again, not too sweet, with a rice-based whipped topping . I kind of wish the mango flavor was a little stronger, but it feels like the flavors are naturally achieved rather than with artificial flavoring so I can't complain.
