    Mmmm macarons!
    Ruth C.

Sweet Sammie Jane's back in Chili! Woohoo! This is my first time visiting and I was a happy camper. My daughter is getting married and wants macarons for the reception. We set up a time for a tasting. They were set out a dozen macarons for us to try. One was better than the other! We could have tried more, but I was getting a sugar overload lol. The cookies were light and tasty. My favorites: Espresso, Caramel and Raspberry. They were out of peach and orange cream (like a creamsicle you say??) but I will go back for those. Pricing is reasonable. They do have some other desserts as well: cupcakes, brownies and other goodies. Do yourself a favor and stop here for a treat!

My review of Sweet Sammie Jane's is based on a catering partnership she had with my wedding venue. I am not a huge cake person, so aside from the traditional wedding cake, I added a Sweets Finish package with lots of little goodies such as cannolis, coconut macaroons (not to be confused with French macarons), mini cheesecakes, cookies, and tarts. The presentation of all of the sweets was wonderful, and I enjoyed the little cheesecakes immensely. I prefer Sammie Jane's coconut macaroons to the French ones she carries in house. The little brownie bites were tasty as well. I am glad she relocated back to Chili.

I was very excited to learn that this cute bakery moved to Park Ave. I tried some of their French macarons when they were distributing them to Veritas, so I was eager to try some new flavors. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in all of them with the texture of the almond meringue shell and most of them with the flavor. The outside of the cookie should gently crack against your teeth, and as you continue to bite through to the center, you should experience a soft, moist, chewy layer before experiencing the complimenting flavors of the filling. I'm not sure if it's because they're old or what because I've had a similar experience at another bakery. I asked which were the freshest and got an answer that it's best when they sit at room temperature for about a half an hour before eating them and that the flavors blend together better the next day after baking. So....which are the freshest again? The friendly baker also mentioned that they will have their main, core flavors, but also add rotating flavors to change it up. I tried 9 out of 12 flavors, $1.85 each. Here's my ranking of SSJ's best to worst French macarons from Friday's batch. EXPRESSO - Had the "best" texture of them all. The crushed coffee grounds added a nice balance to the soft cookie shell. The downside was that the cream was a little too sweet and overpowered the rest of the flavors. RASPBERRY - The jam reminded me of the Italian cookies with the dollop of jam in the middle so it was the "best" filling. The cookie was softer than most, yet slightly grainy/crumbly than moist. I thought the flavor of this was the most balanced, but it was also the smallest macaron. MINT CHOCOLATE - The fragrance was pleasant and true to mint, but the taste of it was mediocre. There was chocolate ganache in the middle and white minty cream around the edge. PEANUT BUTTER - Strawberry jam and light whipped cream center. Again, the filling was tasty, but the shell wasn't right. BLUEBERRY - This bright florescent blue macaron filled with a white cream attracted my attention. The flavor reminded me of Fruity Pebbles cereal rather than blueberries. ALMOND- Harder than soft shell, but the light whipped cream was good. PISTACIO - It was just okay, but I think it would be better with chocolate ganache filling instead of white cream. I suggest they sprinkle some crushed pistachio on top just to add some contrast and more pistacio flavor. LEMON - It was implied that I should like lemon to enjoy this macaron, so I assumed she meant there was a strong lemon flavor. I really like lemon desserts so I was looking forward to this one, but it was mild flavored with a hollow shell. RED VELVET - This was the first I bit into and was by far, the absolute worst. I bit into the big, extremely hard, hollow shell and grimaced. It didn't seem like a macaron at all, but a crunchy cookie that didn't taste good. Overall, I can't say any of their cookie shells were French macaron quality. They all were harder than they should be, but each at different degrees. Either the shell was hard or the flavor was off. With that said, a friend of mine said the macarons that she tried a couple of weeks before were tasty, but the ones I had were not so good. Consistency may be a problem. However, I appreciate the double flavor fillings. I've been spoiled (or cursed) because my first experience was my best experience and it has yet to be topped. I can't even recreate that experience because Bake It or Cleave It stopped making French macarons. Seriously, I'm sad about it every time I take a bite into a disappointing French macaron. My hunt for delectable macarons continues.

Found this place though a google search for "macarons, rochester, ny". Had no expectations, but oh my! Got a dozen different macaroons and they were just amazing. This place is a gem!

Let me preface this by saying I have a personal relationship with this bakery. This by no means sways this review. This has slowly continued to become my absolute favorite bakery. I have never had a bad anything. There are staples that are always in the bakery like the brownies and most of the bars but the cupcakes change. The macarons also are pretty stable but there are new flavors seasonally. Macarons are my absolute favorite dessert and sweet sammie Jane's takes the cake for the best that I've had. They're cooked perfectly and the middle is so creamy and delicious. Again, I have never had anything bad here. Currently, they're only doing etsy orders just for macarons. Order. You will never ber disappointed

Sweet Sammie Jane's concept deserves 5 stars on its own. I love that they have a huge variety of 1-2 bite desserts so you can satisfy that sweet tooth at a fraction of the calories + cost ($1.50 - $2.00). Unless of course, you get 4 of them. In which case, you get to sample a great variety of desserts. This is what I call a win-win situation...except for maybe your health. They seem to do an overall good job with the desserts. The salted caramel chocolate ganache tart was a good size and totally hit the salty-sweet spot. The tart shell did look slightly underdone. The key lime pie was perfectly tart. The raspberry chocolate cake was unfortunately bland. Everyone loved the coconut macaroon but I didn't sample it. The macarons were a mixed bag. The chocolate cherry one was tasty but lacked cherry flavour and the texture was not quite for me. They have a large variety of flavours so I am open to trying another! You know, for science. They are open till 8pm on most days so you may have to stop and pick up dessert before your dinner (some may call this a first world problem). This place is a great addition to Park Ave and a fantastic alternative to the other bakeries around there serving cupcakes with a tonne of overly sweet frosting!

These macaroons had that perfect crunch when biting into them and very flavorful fillings. Our favorites were the Orange Creamsicle, Blueberry Cotton Candy & Cookie Dough. Sweet Sammie Jane's has a great variation of flavors!

SSJs is the only place I will buy french macarons in Rochester! I purchased a slew of macarons for a party we were hosting and I was delighted they had a cookie tower we could rent for the event. I placed all ordering details electronically via email which was extremely convenient. They will work with you based on color palette/ theme or based on the flavors you like. I did a combo of both! Delightful to eat and do business with. There were no cookies left at the end of the party, so I know they were well-received as I expected. My local favorite!

I'm not a sweets person, but when I have a craving for a treat I always choose to indulge. I heard Sweet Sammie Jane's was moving to Park Ave and knew I had to try their macarons. Although, walking into their tiny storefront shop, I was faced with decision anxiety. They have way more to offer than their macarons, including chocolate tarts, cookies, 7 layer magic bars, etc. I chose the lemon macaron for myself and the chocolate ganache tart for the bf. I devoured the bite of the light citrus sweet like it was the fluff of a cloud. It wasn't overly sweet but still satisfied my dessert craving and I actually wanted more (not usual for me - one bite usually does it for me). My bf had the tart later that evening and was so surprised how rich and delectable the tiny treat was. The rich ganache melted in his mouth. We'll be back for more. I came back for more enroute to a wine tasting and picked up some macarons. While the flavors were yummy (espresso chocolate, raspberry, salted caramel, and PB&J), they weren't as fluffy as they were the first visit, pretty crunchy even. Their tarts and other cake-like treats are wonderful so opt for more of those on your visit. I think this spot will be great to nab affordable treats on your way to a party (most items in the display case were under $2). They do custom orders as well. Their store window display was adorable, with beautifully decorated tiered cakes, flowers and knick knack gifts. Might be worth seeing what they have displayed there for a cute housewarming gift or for a bridal shower -- books, kitchen towels, serving platters, etc.

I waited to review Sweet Sammie Jane's until I had tried the other macarons available in Rochester (Bake It Or Cleave It and Village Bakery & Cafe). After trying all three places, Sweet Sammie Jane's has the best macarons in terms of flavor hands down. I have tried almond cream, espresso, sugar and spice, chocolate cherry, pineapple and chocolate ganache (with chocolate shell) macarons. Every single time I go in to pick up a few macarons (okay...so it's more than a few) I find something I LOVE and can't stop eating. I haven't had that experience anywhere else. (If you have the opportunity to try the almond cream or sugar and spice -- go for it.) In addition to the macarons, my family and I have also tried their cupcakes, a chocolate ganache tart, cannolis and neapolitan cookies. While we really enjoyed the chocolate ganache tart and neapolitan cookies, Savioa's still has the best cannolis in Rochester and I wasn't too keen on the vanilla cupcake (the cake was delicious but the frosting didn't have enough vanilla flavoring for me). The owners are both really friendly and down to earth. This is one of the bakeries that I will miss when I move from Rochester. I hope to try out their coffee and lunch items before leaving.

a text message to her baby

My best friend requested a beautiful marble blue and white "cloud look" cake with a bear on top and writing at the front of the cake in her baby's name for her baby BOY shower. See image sent in a text to the business. What she received is the plain white cake with writing in sloppy and hard to see silver on TOP and PINK sloppy minuscule sprinkles. When our friend who picked it up for the mom to be and opened it at the venue, you can imagine all of our horror. When she called the owner, instead of the first thing the owner should say which is, "I'm sorry," she immediately began to blame her employees who made the mistake and asked what does she want her to do she can't remake it as she's an hour and a half away and to just scrape the top off and serve it still. Atrocious and disgusting response. What a shameful response. You are the owner and should take 100% responsibility and the way you responded was beyond unprofessional. We even tried breaking up blue flowers to cover the pink sprinkles but it was just so awful we hid it in the kitchen fridge and never brought it out except at the end to show a few people what a joke the cake was. Everyone makes mistakes so hopefully this is a learning lesson for you to do better moving forward.

I really enjoyed their salted caramel chocolate ganache tartlet. The macroons were not as soft as I had expected but we did come at the end of the day. The fillings were mildly flavorful. I like to be able to grab just a bite sized sweet.

    Katie N.

Today we tried 6 different macaron flavors; all of which were unfortunately crunchy, dried out and lacking in flavor. For $1.85/macaron, where each is 1.25 inches diameter at best, I thought this was a huge rip off. I suspect I was given old macarons, as the girl pulled the ones I wanted from a box in the back rather than from the display case in the front. If you're looking for great macarons, head to Leaf and Bean on Chili Ave. They're twice the size, way more flavorful, and always fresh! They're a much better value.
