The health inspection report says it all. Unfortunately I assumed from mostly positive reviews this bakery would be a decent neighborhood shop to grab a made on the premises sweet treat. A Morning muffin experience proved otherwise. Yuck. Literally tasted like one of the ingredients was bug spray! And for a few hours I literally felt sick after only consuming a small bite of it. While we have a number of good bakeries in the ROC area, Malek's does indeed stand out. Always lots of great and tasty items here. Most recently tried their Sourdough bread- OMG amazing. Off the road a bit next to the gas station on Monroe west of the 12 Corners, it's easy to miss. Parking both in front and back. It reminds me of the now-closed Genesee bakery with a good selection of bagels, danish, cakes, breads and more. I chose a loaf of rye bread, danish, and chocolate babka for a treat. I had just seen the babka on Food TV and decided it was easier to buy than bake! It was deliciously sinful. Service was prompt and friendly. I'll stop by whenever in the neighborhood. read more

Naf was wonderful to work with on a catering order for a wedding-- he went above and beyond, and created a dinner option (and delivered them himself) to a venue that otherwise would not have been able to accommodate our kosher guests. He made everything easy for us, and for a reasonable price for the work done (including real China plates that had been toiveled.) The Babka at Malek's is delicious! A small bakery that you could easily pass on Monroe Ave. if you aren't looking for it. The fresh breads and bakery items are very good but the Babka is hands down the best item in the place. I have gone in a few times hoping there would be a good soup (I've heard from others they have great soups) but haven't had much luck in their soup department. I stopped by Malek's last weekend, having heard about how great they were, and what I'd heard was true! There's a great variety of pastries and desserts available. I got a poppy seed pastry, a crescent shaped almond pastry and a chocolate covered chocolate cake log. I'm not sure what all of these things are called officially, but that's how I would describe them. They were all delicious, particularly the chocolate one. The woman at the counter was very friendly and patient as I asked about what was in the case. I was in Syracuse for the Jewish new year and was in charge of getting dessert. Being that there are no kosher bakeries in Syracuse (and ALL of the other bakeries are not very good), I decided to take the ride to Malek's. And boy, I'm glad I did! Malek's did not disappoint. Many times, kosher baking means not the best baking because butter is not used (only in pareve baking.). Malek's chocolate babka is classic. Moist, delicious, and loaded with quality chocolate. Kichel was light and airy. Chocolate chip Kuchen, cheese Danish, and almond horns were all fresh and delicious. You would be hard pressed to find better kosher baking anywhere, including the center of the Jewish world, Brooklyn! read more

A Bakery in the heart of Brighton. I stopped by today for the first time and was in awe of the selection. Absolutely amazing assortment of baked goods to choose from, I opted for the usual cookie. Cookie was great, not too chewy and not hard. It was just a tad bit dry but that's from me coming in later in the afternoon. It had the perfect amount of chocolate chips. You can see from my bite that the cookie stayed intact and was not messy at all. I wanted so badly to grab more from this shop but I knew I would regret it. The shop is small and the women behind the counter was very sweet and polite. I read reviews for this bakery last spring when I was planning/mapping out an area wide bakery tour to be shared with my wife and our dear friends. Unfortunately, the trip was slated to take place on a Saturday, and Malek's wasn't going to be open. Well, it was my wife's birthday yesterday, so we took a drive into the city, had lunch and I suggested we stop into Malek's on our way home. It was well worth it. I purchased two NYC style chocolate babkas and a few jelly donuts. We used one of the babkas as a birthday cake for my wife. Wow. My wife, three kids and myself were very impressed. So tender and flavorful and not cloyingly sweet. Just the right amount of chocolate too. Next week is my birthday. I want the babka. Don't delay. Malek's is definitely worth the trip. read more

We had some great items from here. I went in looking for babka, but we ended up with a couple of boxes of other stuff. The cherry- cheese kuchen was awesome...tasted almost like cherry cheesecake. Turnovers, nice and flakey pastry. Brownies, thin but so dense almost fudge like (yum!). The chocolate babka was good, although I didn't care for the stripe chocolate ganache on the top...I prefer a little coarse sugar topping instead (personal preference). It was quite busy (the last half hour of their hours) and they still had a nice selection. The ladies working there were very lovely and patient while we made our selections. read more

I think Malek's is one of the best treasures in all of Rochester. You'd have to go down to NYC to find a Jewish style bakery that could give them a run for their money. Once or twice a year, I stop by Malek's to pick up a large Chocolate Babka to take to work. I let everyone know the day before so they don't eat breakfast. Believe me when I say, the look on peoples faces that have forgotten and eat breakfast at home is priceless when I open the box. I literally have coworkers get out of their chairs and follow me through the office to the table in anticipation. If you've never eaten Chocolate Babka, you owe it to yourself to go to Malek's and get one for friends, family or work. You will be put on a pedestal for the day. It's that good, seriously. I've also had the Rugelach, Challah Bread and the Cheese Danish. I've only ever had Rugelach from Malek's so I can't compare it to anything but can say that it's delicious. I've had plenty of Cheese Danish in my life and Malek's is fantastic. They make several different Challah's which are the best you can get (if you've never had Challah Bread French Toast, you've been deprived of good French Toast). Malek's should be on your radar at all times, especially when driving though the Brighton Twelve Corners. Remember, Chocolate Babka makes people extremely happy. read more

I can't believe I'm the first to review this bakery! Malek's is the friendly, local, superior alternative bakery to the Dunkin Donuts across the street or the Starbucks at 12 Corners. Malek's has a great selection of baked goods - and many are Kosher, I believe - or they are labelled according to whether there is dairy involved - if you are so inclined to know for religious reasons. My favorite breakfast treat is the raisin scone, which you would think just sounds pretty simple, but something about it - probably the stick of butter involved in the baking process - makes me drool just thinking about it. They also have the best cookies - try their cow cookies or their smiley faces! The downside is their coffee isn't really great, but if you are just looking for a treat - or a little breakfast bite - skip the chains and hit up the real deal! read more

I stopped in on my way to the pizza place down the street and discovered some delicious desserts! They have cakes, pies, cookies and more and all for adorable prices. Now, I stop in all the time to buy they're scrumptious half moon cookies (those things are ADDICTIVE but sooo good). The employees aren't always the friendliest, but they're helpful when I comes to choosing your dessert. It would be hard to find a Jewish bakery that has better sweets than Mallak's... but they do say that the Brighton Jewish population is bigger and better than anywhere else (besides NYC obviously).
