Second time coming here and I was not disappointed. I went a little bit after 5 PM and it started getting busy. We were seated instantly upon entering and waited a little bit before being asked what we wanted to drink. If you're craving a delicious steak and in the town of Okeechobee or close by this is the place to go. One of the best French onion soups I've ever had, It was the cheese that was inside of it, and the onions gave it a great flavor with the broth and the fresh bread that was in it. My steak was cooked, medium rare it was juicy and tender. The Steak Gorgonzola tasted very fresh and that breadstick that accompanied it was so buttery and had a nice crisp on the outside. My friend had this steak Caesar salad and she said she gives it a 10. She said her steak was very tender and full of flavor considering she got it medium well, I think this restaurant could use a little bit of music inside. You could hear the conversations of everybody in the restaurant but, other than that I would definitely go back. Wife's filet was good. My ribeye was terrible. It took 1 1/2 hours from time we ordered to get food. Only had limited slection of bottled beer nothing on tap. No foo foo drinks for wifey. A favorite place for dinner. My husband orders the filet and I always get a ribeye! The steaks usually do not need additional seasoning of any kind. They're perfectly seasoned and cooked. Our last visit - just a few weeks ago - the steaks weren't up to the usual standard and lacked seasoning. That was a first for us, and since they were busy.... Could have been just an off night. It won't affect our returning. Service is always excellent. It's not a fancy place but, it's quiet and you can actually carry on a conversation without yelling or straining to hear. Very nice. I'd like to suggest that they pay a bit more attention to the appearance of the plating and subsequently, posting on social media. There's no effort to wipe the plate surfaces clean or arrange food attractively. But then, I don't always do that at home either.... It doesn't affect the taste! Pass on the "steamed vegetables". They're mushy and over cooked..... but do NOT pass on their hand cut fries. Excellent and a tasty addition to fabulous steaks. Hands down, our favorite place to eat. One more thought! The steaks were a pretty good cut (T-Bone) and cooked to the correct temp but had no seasoning. I salted mine when I got home. Everything else tasted like the cafeteria. The restaurant itself is very drab, dark, and dirty. The staff is kind but man are they slow. You can hear the chefs yelling and cursing. And you will absolutely go home stinking of fryer grease. 7 of the literal 10 tables in the first half of the restaurant sat absolutely filthy and empty for over 25 mins which was gross. They weren't busy and didn't appear understaffed. I asked for grilled onions with my to-go and got fried onion rings instead (which I don't eat). An hour after placing my order, I'm told soups can't be to-go so it'll be replaced with a salad (which I never got). The pasta cheese sauce had a bitter and almost rancid taste. I wouldn't spend money here again unless it was completely redone. It's honestly pretty damn expensive ($40 for a t-bone with the wrong side I couldn't eat and they forgot my salad) for VERY below par food. You can absolutely spend the same or less at the grocery store and make an even better, more passionately cooked meal at home, and I recommend that over eating here. read more

The Speckled Perch was recommended by several people during my stay. I had the ribeye and vegetables with a side Caesar. Salad was a little heavy-handed on the dressing, but fresh. The ribeye was an excellent cut (honestly, the cut was so good that the price doesn't reflect. It could be $10 more and still be a bargain), but too lite on salt which would have boosted the beefiness. Some coarse sea salt would have really raised the steak to a much higher level. The vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots) seemed bought frozen in a bag and severely overcooked to the point of being mush. They are the biggest disappointment of the visit. The ambiance is both fancy and 1970's lounge, and it is dark. If you have issues seeing in dark places, you will be functionally blind here. There are no windows and the lights are set to the dimmest setting I've ever encountered in a restaurant. The 70s come in at the bar, which is two dining rooms away from the entrance. The bar has a black, vinyl-covered, padded-edge top and carpeted riser with metal-bamboo swivel chairs. The ceiling above the bar is sealed particle board. The Perch is also quiet. There is no background music. The noise you and the other patrons make is the music of the night. The lone tv in the restaurant was off, so no distractions there. Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive; exactly as it should be. There was no dedicated host, so I had to wait for the first dining room server to finish taking an order to discover the bar was in the back, through the second dining room, and out of sight from the entrance. I expect servers to tend their tables first and seat people second, and I happily waited. Overall it was an OK experience with the steak - that seriously, supremely excellent cut of steak - that brings us to three stars. The lack of even light background music or noise to cover the sounds of chewing and other tables' conversations, too little salt on the steak, and the horrible vegetables really hurt the rating. Friends and I were staying in Okeechobee for a Spartan race. It's our tradition to always get a steak for dinner the night before a race. I'm generally in charge of finding the place. I found the Speckled Perch on Yelp and true to the reviews don't judge a book by its cover. It is a hole in the wall local spot and was crowded as reviews said on a Friday night. Im glad we made reservations. I love local places over chain restaurants. We met a local at the door who gave us recommendations and she wasn't wrong. She even came back to find us after her party sat down to see how we were enjoying the food. The French onion soup had cheese that went on for days and was tasty. My ribeye was cooked to my expectations and well seasoned. I was very pleased with my meal. Our waiter was great and friendly. Who knows if I'll ever be back in Okeechobee but I would definitely return for a meal. read more

When we first arrived at the Speckled Perch I thought we were at the wrong place. It's a dusty nightclub that, at first view, looks abandoned. We drove around the building twice before seeing a hand-lettered sign on a door that says Restaurant Entrance on an old cinder block section of the back of the building. Inside the decor is straight out of decades past, an odd mix of linen tablecloths protected by paper place mats. If you like steak, you're in luck. If you don't like steak, your options are limited. You'd think with a name like Speckled Perch there would be seafood on the menu but, if you want fish, your only option is the bait store at the gas station across the street. I had the bone-in rib eye and my wife had the filet. Both were cooked as ordered and came with a baked sweet potato, an option I always appreciate. Portions are generous but the cooking is a bit unimaginative. Prices may be similar to the coast but you get a real, thick-cut steak the likes of which I haven't seen in years. It's a pity the preparation doesn't rival the quality of the steak. My overall impression was that it felt old and reminded me of a time when nightclubs had to show a certain percentage of their income from food. Despite its name this restaurant specializes in steak. Four of us dined there. Our drinks were served promptly and the waitress brought a small relish tray. You are given a choice of soup or salad. Three ordered the onion soup which they reported was terrible: the soup had no flavor according to my friends. I ordered the salad which was ok. I ordered a ribeye steak which was cooked how I ordered. However the steak had quite a bit of gristle. The steak was tasty. Another ordered steak Gorgonzola which he said was good. Another ordered sirloin and another fillet mignon. They said their steaks were good. . Service was good and for a steakhouse they price reasonable. The only issue was with the clam chowder two ordered. One individual got only a piece log clam in it. The other had sufficient clams in his soup. However neither thought the soup was good. read more

This is definitely an example of "Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover". I was in the mood for something different than your normal eateries. So I looked on Yelp and I saw The Speckled Perch. I'm not going to lie and say I had second thoughts about going in. I accidentally went through the wrong entrance and came in through the back where they have storage. I guess I missed the Restaurant Entrance Sign. So i finally saw the sign! I don't know if they were going for the "Abandoned" look, but that's what it felt like. I've lived in Okeechobee for 2 years and never saw this place. I've passed this building many times and never thought it was a restaurant. Again I won't lie when I say "It gave me a shady feel during the day". I'd prolly be more hesitant at night and definitely take my chances somewhere else! BUT!!! Let me tell you when I entered that place... I felt at ease! It had a "Relaxing" feel once I entered. All my anxieties stopped and I felt like I actually entered a small city "Fancy" restaurant. The wait staff were courteous and my food came out in a respectable time. I ate alone so the timeframe will be different with a party of course. I ordered a 10oz Sirloin Med-Rare with a Baked Sweet Potato which came with a soup or house salad. The Steak was great! Slightly under seasoned but succulent! I love A1 and steak, but if the steak is seasoned perfectly... no need for any condiments. Then again... many like the fresh taste of beef slightly seasoned. The Baked Sweet Potato was really good. The House Salad was mediocre unfortunately. I love a good salad! They serve you complimentary bread and a small veggie assortment with a ranch dip which is great! Some things that I would change just to give it that next level of "Steakhouse". Better plates! It's a Steakhouse not a Diner. Plates say a lot of who you are as a restaurant. Lose the diner plate... lose the diner salt and pepper shakers... lose the small city look and look like a 5 Star Steakhouse. Nice plates, Sea Salt and Pepper Grinders and Presentation is KEY! Excellent food in the middle of nowhere. Excellent steaks, crudités and good service. It has three ambiences. The entrance is just an inconspicuous door, but as you walk in you encounter a clean place and friendly people. The first ambiance has dim lights. The second ambiance has bright lights and then a cute and happy bar. The bathrooms are clean as everything in there. Loved the tidbits with onions and mushrooms. You can choose several other sides. I stopped here on my way to the East coast of FL and knew that I wouldn't make it to my destination in to catch a restaurant there. I got on Yelp and punched in Okeechobee FL as that was the only decent sized town between where I was and where I was going. It was exactly as described on Yelp. A hole in the wall restaurant with better food than atmosphere. It's basically a slightly run down cowboy bar with a restaurant in the back. The prices were very reasonable, the quality of the food was for the most part . . very good and the service was decent. The steaks were very very good and cooked exactly as requested. I will probably stop in again along the way. Please note that it's just an old building that probably hasn't changed inside or out in 40 years. Nothing fancy but good food. The only negatives were the onion soup was just so so and their beer options are limited but other than that, it's definitely a safe stop along the way. The other thing I found extremely odd was the NAME. The Speckled Perch. There is NO seafood on the menu at all. It's just a steak only restaurant. I'm still scratching my head about this. Went there on Saturday night for dinner. Was a little skeptical (not too much though) after reading reviews here on Yelp. For starters, they fixed the entrance confusion. Now there are arrows on the building pointing to the entrance and a huge sign on the door. There was a wait, which is I guess a good sign. After 20 min we got inside. To be honest, I expected it to be much worse. Yes it's an old building with all decor. But it gave us the country feel. Everyone was super friendly and fast. Ordered ribeye and filet. All was cooked to order. The meat was of excellent quality and the portions were great. Nothing fancy, very simple but super delicious. Steaks were perfectly seasoned, got mushrooms and onions to go with them and baked potato. We were pleasantly surprised and def will go back. read more

We made it to the much talked about steakhouse in town. To be fair, we arrived at 6:30p on a Friday (which I assume is their busiest shift?) Server was super nice and we got drinks, salads, bread and a complimentary small veggie plate soon after we were seated. We then waited at least an hour and 15 minutes for the food to arrive. At this point we just wanted our food so we could pack up and go. We ate a few bites of our steaks and they were seasoned well and cooked a little over the requested medium on one and just right for the medium rare on the other. I went to the Speckled Perch when I was visiting Okeechobee Florida. They were busy that evening and the server named Briony waited on me. I was still looking at the menu and she ask me if I would like a drink while I was looking. She ran and got the drink and I mean hustled. I ordered a steak medium well ,potatoes, and salad. The meal was excellent and the waitress did a great job. The other server in the front area was also very busy and took the time to ask me how is everything. They even said have a good night and come back soon. I have been to many restaurants in Florida and can say the restaurants season food blandly, but not this place. I would say top notch. The only issue I had was finding the entrance door. So if your ever in Okeechobee stop on in, it's worth your time. Was told this was the best steak house in Okeechobee but I was definitely not impressed. Lighting is horrible, there was only one waitress working and she wasn't very friendly and it sounded like there was a party in the kitchen because the music was blaring! As far as the food goes, if you're charging $25-$30 for a steak then you can afford a head of lettuce. The salad that we had was old and you could definitely taste it as well as see it. One person ordered home fries and the came out looking like oily pasta noodles. Whatever they put on the home fries ruined the flavor of his steak. My baked potato was fine, kind of hard to mess up, but for the price of my steak I shouldn't have had to use steak sauce. The meat seemed to be over seasoned and a little gritty but I was able to stomach most of mine.
