I am exceedingly disappointed in Eric at Specs of Darien. None of the story below would have been necessary had he simply looked up the actual invoice for the glasses I purchased from him. Other reviewers have noted how Eric has cleaned and tuned up the glasses he sold them. May I add that other retailers who didn't even sell me the frames to begin with, have touched up and adjusted frames just because that's what you do if you are in the business (e.g., Morganthal Frederichs in New Canaan -- helping me and my husband on a few occasions, and Eyes on Elm in New Canaan -- the staff at both of these shops are quite attentive, competent, courteous, punctual, exacting in attention to detail and their business "hygiene"). Other reviewers have noted Eric's courtesy and attentiveness yet all the bon homie in the world cannot supplant actual competent customer service. Please note that this is my first Yelp review ever and it is made with a reluctant sense of responsibility to other potential consumers who have a choice of optical shops from which to choose. About a month ago, shortly after my Titanium Bevel glasses purchased from his store bent out of shape, I called him to ask if I could purchase a replacement frame. He said "Sure," and mailed me a pair of Masunaga Acetate frames. I called and told him I had never bought Masunaga frames and he attributed the error to the fact that I had looked at the Masunaga frames but had actually purchased the Bevel ones. He said he'd get right on it, but when he called again he said the frames "were such a popular color and model that the company is sold out and even if another retailer had a pair it is unlikely that they would send it to me." "They won't be making that color and model until October, 2021. Do you want to get a different frame?" I said, "No thanks, I'll wait until October." But my husband went online to the Bevel site, spoke to someone at Bevel in an effort to find the correct model, and then I went on the Bevel site, spoke with a manager at Bevel, sent that person a picture of myself wearing the glasses to confirm the model and color with Bevel, and he said, "We absolutely do have that color and model in stock." I asked for another authorized Bevel retailer in my area and conveyed to him what Eric had reported. Bevel gave me the name of Sound Beach Optics and I spoke with Dr. Poe, related the above story to him, he double checked with Bevel that they had the frame and color I wanted, and called yesterday to say the frames had arrived. When I told Eric today that I was around the corner and was now a good time to drop off the Masunaga frames he had sent, he said "Yes," but three minutes later, the door to Specs of Darien was locked with the message that he'd gone to the Post Office. After hanging around the door a while he emerged from the back, seemingly on the phone with someone. I politely told him the above, he seemed flustered and said he'd look into it. He then called and left a voice message in which he maintained that someone named Val confirmed that Bevel was out of the frame model and color and, Eric continued, he didn't know who I was dealing with. So, Eric, I am dealing with Dr. Poe and Bevel. I don't know who Val is but it's quite easy to find Bevel, my frame model and color online, and another optometrist. As I am relatively new to this part of the country, I had not yet established a relationship with an optometrist and was referred to Specs of Darien and Eric specifically by a Dr. Talbott in New Canaan. Eric took a lot of time fussing over the shape of my face and opining on the proper glass shape, then recommended the Masunaga frame. I wanted Titanium and I wanted a steel blue color and he finally produced the Bevel frames that I ultimately purchased (and then had to replace owing to my clumsiness). I am looking forward to a new relationship with a more efficiently run retailer, managed by transparent and accountable staff who communicate well. read more

I recently moved to the area after buying a pair of glasses where I had been living, just before we left. Needless to say, the glasses weren't fitting appropriately, so I needed to get them adjusted professionally. I'm thankful that Eric spent time adjusting them better than I've ever had glasses fit before; he clearly knew what he was doing and took the time necessary to get it right. Eric is a super star. In addition to demonstrating amazing customer service, he is a top rate technician who knows how to find frames that truly look the best on a person's face and fit difficult prescription needs. I am legally blind in one eye and have always had crazy thick lenses. Eric worked closely with me for several weeks to find frames that would help minimize the thickness of my lenses and then personally oversaw the crafting of lenses that are as thin as those of people with normal prescriptions. After thirty years wearing unattractively thick lenses it is so wonderful to be able to wear stylish frames with thin lenses. I didn't think it was possible! I will never go anywhere else to get glasses and highly recommend others go to Specs. Eric is a genius (not to mention a gem of a human)!! read more

Eric. A truly knowledgable, courteous, above and beyond employee. Last week I entered the shop behind what appeared to be a gentleman quite down on his luck, who hadn't cleaned up in a while. Eric treated him with utmost respect, fixed 2 out of 3 pairs of his broken glasses cheerfully, as best he could, and promised to see what could be done about the third pair. He didn't know the man. Most upscale shops might have treated the man derisively, or dismissed him as quickly as possible. Eric allowed him to sit a while in the comfort of the shop after his repairs were complete. You just don't see that very often. He has a great eye, is honest in his appraisal of how a pair of glasses might look on you, and has never based his opinions on the price of an item. He takes his time and knows his wide inventory better than most. Other employees sometimes seem rushed, or steer you towards something easy. I wanted a specific style, not terribly common, and another employee gave the perception that what I was looking for was too hard to find and I should instead consider what was right in front of me. Eric also never presumes you want or need the most expensive bells and whistles. Other employees sometimes do. Overall, the shop is incredible, I recommend them all the time, but I think a big part of what makes them better than the rest, is Eric. read more
