I saw Dr Tam at the Walmart Vision Center in Manor. I was not a current client, but my daughter had an emergency need for contacts on a Saturday, and her regular optometrist was closed. Dr Tam and his staff were caring and concerned, and without hesitation gave us a temporary supply of contacts to get her through until she could see her optometrist. Ooh la la. Check out DITA brand sunglasses.... This place is very boutique with lots of fun, colorful and designer frames not one is alike. The variety is great and you will surely find something to make you happy. The staff is very fun, knowlegeable and can really help pick some frames that suit you. Dr. Tam has the latest in eye technology and is very helpful in getting your vision needs met quickly. They take most major insurance too. If you need an appointment call them they have very flexible times. I can't wait to get my fun glasses :) read more

I have an eye doctor Ive nbeen seeing for many years, but when I went to get my anual eye exam, I could NOT find a SINGLE frame that i liked! They were all "MEH"... I wanted something cool and special and unique! A friend suggested I look at the selection of frames at SPECATCLE on Burnet Road- Now I had a NEW problem- there were so many frames I LOVED, it was so hard to choose! That's a much better problem to have! I had to sleep on it and emailed them after hours when I made up my mind - and I was totally surprised they responded to me on a Friday night long after closing, and pulled the frames I wanted to hold them for me till I could get there in person! I ended up going with a paid of La Fonts and I ADORE them! But I keep on looking at the photos I took of the other 5 I seriously considered! I might have to buy a second pair! read more

I don't have eye insurance any more, but my eyes are my investment. My initial thought was to go to someone whose service was agreeably appreciated. The yelp deal made for a nice introduction. Dr.Tam is awesome. He is personable, intelligent, and most of all, completely genuine. My preferences for a good doctor are sincerity and patience. His exam was thorough, unrushed, and informative. He educated me of what is going on with my eyes, advised me on homecare (with samples! ) and gave recommendations for opticals. Wow factor, beyond expectation. The technology is a plus. Customer service is another plus (and Jana was sweet). These are all accessories though. What brings me to a 5 star is the vibe-- Dr.Tam goes above the standard of care for vision. After living in Austin for several years, I've found an official optometrist to keep long-term. I have used glasses/corrective lenses for roughly 15 years, which equates to dreading my annual eye exams. Not. Anymore. My visit to Spectacle Eye Design takes the cake, and I couldn't be happier with the new pair of glasses I picked up my earlier today. You can tell that Dr. Tam holds high standards for his company when you walk in the door- everything is clean and the decor is Austin chic at it's finest. The front room is stacked with the perfect selection, combining various colors/styles of both mainstream and unique/foreign frame-wear brands. The staff made my entire experience of selecting new frames exciting & timely. They even had my insurance information printed out beforehand, to show me clear pricing breakdowns for my options. Having moved here from Oklahoma, I had to find a new place for my yearly eye exam. I searched Yelp and found that this place had wonderful reviews, and even though it's not in my neighborhood, I decided to give it a try. Spectacle Eye Design did not disappoint! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, the interior of the building is lovely, there's a wide selection of very unique frames, and the whole appointment was stress free (and it started on time, woo!). When you first walk into Spectacle, it's definitely a new site in terms of optometrists. This place feels fun and funky and the staff match the personality they want. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. They are trying to make everything paper free and electronic and it's reflected in their up to date technology, including no air in the eye!! They were able to schedule me quickly and there was no wait when I showed up for my appointment. They specialize in unique eyewear and some of it is a tad beyond my personal budget but if I wanted the thicker rims, cat eyes, or fun colors that are quality glasses this is the place. I found a pair I loved that was a bit more toned down and can't wait to go pick them up!! They accept most insurance as well! I would definitely recommed Dr. Tam and the entire staff at Spectacle Eye Design. They are fantastic. I'm glad I found an optometrist in Austin!! read more

What can I say about this place that isn't the same ol' same ol'? JANA! That's what. This lady had me at Hello. So nice and helpful. She didn't bat an eye when I mentioned my budget. Besides being quite a fashionista herself, she has a great eye for helping find something that looks good on you. She helped out with the insurance bit with a smile, makin fun of the dreadful hold music. Did I mention that I walked in at the end of the day with no appointment? I'm 47 years old and have never had glasses before. Nervous and anxious about the whole process... I scheduled an eye exam for both myself and my daughter after hearing several people brag about how well Dr. Tam took care of them. I was pleased with the entire experience. The staff and Dr. Tam were very pleasant and there was no pressure to buy expensive eyewear. Options were presented to us... my daughter was actually excited picking out her own Calvin Klein frames! What a great staff! Everyone is very attentive and easy to work with. I normally don't enjoy optometrist appointments... the puff of air in your eye, trying not to blink when instructed, and getting pressured into buying glasses... that is what I am used to... none of that here! No wait, no puff of air in your eye, and the staff is really helpful, and not overly concerned about selling frames. On top of that Dr. Tam was very patient and answered all of my questions without getting overly technical. Appointment was easy to set up and there was no wait. It's always an uneasy feeling to visit a new Dr.'s Office, and get reacquainted as a new patient, but I am glad I found this place. Jana greeted and helped me as soon as I walked in the door for my appointment. She was super nice, friendly, and made me feel welcomed. Dr. Tam was very easy to talk to as well. He was able to explain everything to me without all the medical jargon I might not otherwise understand. I visited Spectacle yesterday for the first time and man, did it make an impression. This place is cool! Not only is is decorated like a Vegas hotel (my favorite place), but the instruments are state of the art! Remember that old eye pressure test where they blow a big air "ball" into your eyes? No longer! with a simple little device, I felt barely a tickle and was done. The whole set up is automated, and makes the exam easier. They have a fantastic selection of frames and I was able to pick out a new pair or reading spectacles with ease. Dr. Tam was great and the office staff was courteous and professional. They even gave my 5 year old an exam (which I was a little nervous about) and he giggled and had a great time while finding out he is in excellent ocular health. I visited Spectacle Eye Design a week ago and was treated with world-class customer service. I came in for an eye exam as well as a contact lens exam. Jana was extremely professional, accommodating and made me feel at home. Jana did the initial screenings using what appeared to be very modern high tech equipment... then Dr. Tam brought me in for the eye exams. Dr. Tam also made me feel very comfortable and at ease. The exams were quick and painless. Once completed I was able to browse through their large inventory of modern and trendy frames. I will continue to see Dr. Tam yearly for my eye examination needs. Update: I will edit my review to reflect the superb customer service Spectacle eye design and their staff have provided since my review. Although, they were not in-network, they generously offered a no-cost exam and/or discount on my glasses if I've already had my exam. They explained a staff member called out and someone had to be called in. I presume that is the cause for the attitude, I too would be less than happy to be called to work on a Saturday. Regardless, I would return if they were in network. Dr. Tam is very knowledgeable and will happily address any concern/question you may have. They also have THE best frame selection I've ever seen! Over a year ago, when I was a new patient, this place was awesome, the two receptionists were very helpful and friendly....but that was probably because things were moving along 100% fine. THIS TIME I schedule and appointment, on a Saturday like last time, and they were not so thrilled to see me. The older receptionist was really low-key snobby. While making the appointment, whomever made the appointment failed to verify my insurance and address changes. Odd, because it's been over a year and generally those kinds of things can often times change. So of course when I show up, she is clearly annoyed because my insurance couldn't be verified - oh why didn't you call me? I never receive a missed call or VM from them asking if my insurance changed. Then when they ask for my address I tell them it's changed, the same annoyed lady earlier scoffs as if thinking "this lady is unbelievable". At this point, I've about had it with her attitude. She runs my card, which I know is my medical card but apparently could be used to find my vision plan. All in all, I don't blame them for the situation. I'm upset because the attitude I was receiving was unreal and uncalled for. Yes, I probably should have remembered those things change but I'm not mad that she forgot to ask. I'm mad that she was snooty, unhelpful, and rude. I'm also appalled that she, after stating my deductible is 5K, asked if I wanted to move forward with the exam and just submit the receipt to insurance hoping I'd get reimbursed. HELL NO LADY. I'm not chancing getting stuck with a bill like that and I totally know you wouldn't either. Have a nice day lady because you are never seeing me again. Note: the other younger receptionist was very helpful and nice through and through despite a troll being annoyed with her too. TL;DR only good place if everything goes according to plan and you are immune to old lady snob. Three stars for superb service last time but shitty service this time. read more

I called in to see if they take walk ins and they said yes. Had some free time so I went in to get a new prescription. I didn't have my insurance card so I called my health plan and walked in with a piece of paper that contained my BCBS ID and minor details. She kept calling the Texas line to verify my benefits when I insisted that it's not Texas and that she should call the Florida one. She wouldn't listen, and could not admit that she was wrong. I kept telling her to call the Florida line and she made the whole situation so uncomfortable. Said that she didn't have a number for them to call and that she needed my ID but yet has in front of her a fucking computer to where she could have easily googled?? Her fucking smirks and attitude made it extremely frustrating just to go see the optometrist. I've never written a review before, but holy shit I felt so compelled to about this encounter. They need to get rid of her. I thought I was the only one until I read another review but didn't think much of it since it mostly had positive feedback. To end it all, I told her to finally give me my paper back and that I'd go somewhere else. she nodded "yea I think that's best" smiling from ear to ear with sass and I walked out.
