Two hundred and sixty-five dollars to look into my skull windows and tell me what shape of plastic disc belongs on my eyeballs. I did not walk into your office expecting a luxury spa treatment for my corneas. I expected a routine contact lens exam -- the same basic exercise I have had before, including through this same business, at roughly a quarter of the price. So when the bill came back at $268, I had the distinct feeling of being mugged in broad daylight by a phoropter. If this exam was going to cost $268, that number should have been made clear before the appointment began. Not whispered through paperwork. Not hidden in a fog of billing codes. Not revealed at the end like the final twist in a bad carnival scam. It should have been stated plainly, directly, and unmistakably: "Before we begin, this contact lens exam will cost $268." Had I heard that sentence, I would have stood up, thanked everyone for their time, and walked directly out the door in search of a business operating somewhere closer to reality. This charge is outrageous. It is excessive, poorly disclosed, and completely unacceptable. No reasonable person would expect a routine contact lens exam to cost $268 unless that price was made brutally clear in advance. I am asking you to review this charge and provide a fair adjustment or refund. And I want to be very clear about what happens if this is brushed off. I will not slink away quietly and absorb this nonsense like a beaten insurance animal. I will share an accurate account of this experience everywhere people look before choosing an eye care provider -- Google, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, neighborhood groups, local forums, and any other digital town square where people still value being warned before they are financially body-slammed over an eye exam. Call it social media shaming if you want. I call it consumer hygiene. I will not lie. I will not exaggerate. I will not invent a single detail. I will simply tell people the truth: I was charged $268 for a contact lens exam, the price was not made clear enough before the appointment, my prior exam through the same business was roughly a quarter of that amount, and I would never have agreed to proceed had I known the cost. Haven't been able to find an optometrist I like in my 5 years of being in Austin and I've finally got one! Had a wonderful experience at Great Hills. It's conveniently located at Costco with ample parking. I called ahead and booked an appointment, they were able to get me in within a week of calling. The space is quaint but has everything you need and is well kept and clean. Upon walking in I was immediately welcomed and they actually got me started early with some of the testing before seeing the optometrist. The examination was thorough, I felt the optometrist provided extremely insightful and helpful information- I went in experiencing some pain and am already feeling immensely better! read more

I received a courtesy call from Chloe when I was running behind. When I arrived I received a very smooth pre screening with Ana who was very knowledgeable and kind! Absolutely amazing experience. After 3 eye doctors got my prescription wrong I was looking for someone who would get it right. They got it right with the first try. And uncovered something that no other eye doctor had told me. I'm from out of town so I found them doing an online search. I called them and was greeted with a smile over the phone. Can't remember the lady's name but she had a great personality you that grabbed me through the phone. To be honest, she's the reason why I decided to go with this office versus the others I contacted and I couldn't have been happier with my choice. The office is clean. They have nice high tech equipment. The front staff and doctors are all polite and down to earth. The visit was efficient and there was not much of a wait time. Recently I had to get an eye exam in Austin for the first time in a few years. I came here because I saw the good reviews and it is really close to my house so I figured I'd give it a shot. The office here is super tiny. The entrance door is to the right of the Costco door. I paid out of pocket since I don't have eye insurance. I paid $208 for the contact/glasses exam, the eye scan photography thing they do, and the contact fitting. The first session I had was with Monica. She did great and was very sweet. Unfortunately, I went home with 3 different prescriptions and wasn't very sure which one was the prescription I should buy contacts based off of. I called and scheduled another appt with a new doctor, Dr Carneglia. He was very clear and was able to help with the actual prescription I needed. Front desk ladies are always super sweet, have little to no wait time, and the small waiting space is calm and quiet. I've now been twice, once for an exam and once for a medical issue. I dread eye doctors the way some people dread dentists: choosing between first and second lens flips drives me around the bend. My eyes never focus quickly enough. Everyone was wonderful and while the office is definitely no frills, the service was efficient. I'd rather be in and out than lounge around in luxury. Parking is an issue since it's right next to, or part of Costco, but it's easy to head to Costco's optical department to get a prescription filled. I saw Dr. Do when I was having some issues with floaters. I was able to make a last minute appointment which was great but her exam was awful. She took a million pictures and charged my insurance like crazy. Then she told me I had congenital cataracts which I definitely don't (I've asked multiple other eye doctors since). And she told me my eyes were totally fine. I saw my family eye doctor when I went back home for the holidays several months later and he said I had a serious, time-sensitive condition that Dr. Do definitely should have caught. He even looked at the pictures Dr. Do took and said it's "plain as day" in the pics and not a super rare disease so she definitely should have diagnosed it. If she had diagnosed it, it would have not gotten worse. Now I have irreversible damage because it worsened between seeing her and my family eye doctor. This could have all been avoided if Dr. Do had done her job. Idk, maybe she's fine if you have just need new glasses, but if you've got something wrong don't count on her to catch it. I went in to get an eye exam plus RGP prescription, since my previous provider America's Worst 2years ago didn't provide accurate service. Dr. Monica Do at Great Hills provided a comprehensive exam with the help of their friendly staff. Also paid $49 for a great picture analysis of my total eye health, which was very healthy. However I learned that my eyes have cataracts, which precluded getting fitted for contacts. Hence I was not charged for contact fitting and given a referral for cataract surgery. When I say that today was stressful, it's a bit of an understatement. The eclipse viewing? Fantastic, an experience I'd recommend to anyone. Finding out after the fact that my eye protection was graded for camera lenses and specifically *not* human eyes? Not so much. Great Hills Eye Care was there for me. They promptly answered the phone, told me exactly what I could do to see the extent of the damage, and made me an appointment ASAP. When I anxiety-rambled about my fear of going blind, they listened and helped me calm down. When I got lost on the way and called them nearly crying, they guided me to the office patiently. They explained every step of what they were doing when I asked, even when I asked weird, slightly off-topic questions out of nerves. They did the scans quickly and efficiently, gave me some eye drops, and told me exactly what the next steps were if things worsened (thankfully, my retinas turned out alright). I have to say that the technology used in his office was mind blowing and for the first time, my glasses were quite helpful than ever before. They got me in quickly, had WAY more advanced screening techniques than my previous eye doctor that allowed them to do MUCH more sophisticated screenings without even dilating my eyes, and all for the same price as my other doctor! They even allow you to chose which of the tests you want to do so you can make the visit as inexpensive or as thorough as you want. I think I got pretty much every test they had to offer and my total cost was still only about $137. The whole visit took 35-45 minutes compared to an hour and a half at my other eye doctor. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful and Dr. Provost was great about explaining things and answering my questions. This is my new eye doctor from now on!!!!! read more

Fantastic experience, completely recommend! They are like a fine-tuned machine handling patients, I was in and out in a little over half an hour. (Which is awesome to me because my previous experiences with optometrists have been I'm sitting and waiting in the exam room for 30+ minutes before the exam.) I highly recommend Dr Provost. Aside from his level of knowledge and professionalism he is friendly and personable. His office is located just outside of Costco's so there is plenty of parking and should you be inclined to order contacts or glasses you can walk into Costco and hand over your script all in the same day and at a fair price. His front office area is a little small so prepare to get cozy if a family comes in, or is ahead of you. The receptionist, Melody, is super sweet and friendly. My husband told me he had a great experience here, so I made an appointment and am equally pleased. This was the most high-tech experience I've ever had with any optometrist/ophthalmologist. You look into various machines and the machines quickly do much of what used to be a close-up experience with another person. I don't believe I will go back to getting my eyes dilated again-these new exam machines seem to be thorough enough. The price, even with my adding on an additional test (took a cool photo of the back of my eyeballs), was extremely reasonable. The front staff seemed very knowledgeable and explained the purpose of each test. Would definitely recommend. Quick, clean, easy, thorough. No eyeglasses are available in this location. I did however, visit Dr. Provost's store on Burnet road for new, interesting frames. It's called King and Rose Optical. Not bad prices either (but not cheap). read more

Second time I've visited this eye care facility. The front office girls are very rude. I had an appointment on a Saturday and I have contacts and glasses as a requirement to drive. I walk in and they tell me to take my contacts out and throw them away, as they will give me another pair as I leave. I ask them to double check the price and she says she will check while I"m taking them out. After I take them out they magically find the amount and indicate that my eye exam and contact exam will cost $69.00. This is incorrect as stated on my VSP insurance, on the VSP website, AND as stated by a VSP representative. I show them my insurance and the website and they refuse to take a look. The girl gives me some serious attitude and says I don't have to be seen if I don't believe the amount is $69.00. Excuse me? I'm blind now, and now I'm forced to be seen because I cannot legally drive home. How messed up are you?! Even my VSP representative was appalled when I told her they said that to me. That's seriously messed up and takes advantage of customers. I see the doctor who was nice enough and the exam was relatively quick. This office is the in and out type of office, and they don't waste their time asking you about your day. Personally, that's not a bad thing for me. But then I get up to pay and now its $79.00. What?! You just argued with me that its $69.00? Finally I at least get them to charge me an incorrect amount of $69.00, and I ask for a designated receipt with proof that their system indicates that price. All they would print me is an itemized receipt, no proof, no discussion, no customer service. I'm relatively pissed at this point. Leave, immediately call my VSP representative, and she states that the correct amount is lower. She has to call the office and then starts a chain of angry phone calls in all directions. I had to argue the charge on my credit card by the end of it to get charged the correct amount. I then went back and noticed that last year when I thought everything was dandy they ALSO overcharged me. I asked them to refund the difference from the old visit, and nope. I'm going through my bank once again because the girl is impossible to work with and honestly just horrible. read more

Dr. Carnaglia was so thorough with his exam. I opted for the additional service to take retinal pictures and he explained to me exactly what we were looking at and what the pictures meant. I felt like I actually understood what was going on with my eye health for once! The staff are all very cute and very knowledgeable. I remember asking a couple questions concerning my contact lens fitting and the girls in the front answered them all before I even saw the Dr.! They have set up the office with cute decorations for halloween too. If I could give 6 stars, I would. Great Hills Eye Care is definitely more than just a boring eye exam. I am a retired person who had an eye exam for glasses here. The visit was covered by Medicare. Immediately thereafter, I bought two pairs of glasses next door at Costco totaling about $850. (I made the mistake of getting photochromic tint, which takes about thirty minutes to completely change from clear to dark lenses. But that is another review!) I was told by the optometrist to wait a few weeks for my eyes to adjust to my new prescription. That was quite reasonable, of course. However, after a month, I still could not see very well with my clear lenses. I went back to a different optometrist in the practice. He examined my eyes at no extra charge. He told me that I had some visual anomaly that accounted for my blurred vision. Why this was not picked up by the previous optometrist, I do not know. (For their misdiagnosis, they offered me no refund of the funds they received from Medicare.) Thus I had to wait for 6 months before Medicare would cover the visit to an ophthalmologist. THE MORAL IS: If at all possible, go to an Ophthalmologist in the first place. They are physicians who have trained for at least 10 more years than any optometrist. read more

Let me start this by saying I HATE getting my eyes checked. After avoiding it for a while, someone finally talked me into coming to Great Hills Eye Care. Located right next to Costco (but not affiliated - you do not need a Costco card to get your eye services done here), the staff in the wait room was superfriendly and very efficient. I had to wait less than five minutes to get into my appointment despite being a couple of minutes late. In that five minutes, I filled out all necessary paperwork - just one page front and back, which also covered which services I wanted done. I had a regular eye exam with an additional eye scan, which takes pictures of your eyes from the front and the back. The regular exam was 79.99, and the additional exam was about 30 dollars. The technicians helping me with my eye exams were patient with my anxiety, warm, and helpful. They took as many pictures as needed until they were clear of blinks. I then went in for the eye exam. It took less than ten minutes! The woman performing the exam went through the trouble of explaining each and every step to me. Rather than just looking at my pictures, she went through and explained each one to me, including having them take an additional picture for more clarity. When I had a question about a dot in my eye, she took a look free of charge and cleared it all up for me. I walked out with my prescription and a clean bill of health, all in less than thirty minutes! I won't be dreading eye exams anymore, because Great Hills Eye Care makes it so easy! This place is awesome! I was able to get an appointment very quickly. The prices were upfront. The girls at the front desk were very welcoming and explained every part of the tests. I saw Dr. Carneglia, who was great. He took his time and wasn't ever in a rush. He listened to what I was after with contacts and the issues I'd had before and gave great options so I can wear them comfortably. They also gave me printouts of my prescriptions without me even asking, which was super cool, since a lot of places argue with you about that.
