Still rate these guys high for exterior painting, but cannot recommend them for interior. Bill bungled a bid for a large interior job. He was distracted and rushed (and rude) when he came to do the estimate. He barely looked at the rooms. No wonder, then, that he got the details wrong in the bid. He also recommended something that was unnecessary and expensive and, in my opinion, outlandish. I did not hire Spectrum for the job. read more

I'd warned Bill early on that I was very detail-oriented in case I was going to prove more than he wanted to handle, but he took it as a challenge to exceed my expectations, and indeed he did! Maestro Bill Schroeder and his expert team just completed a 3.5 week transformation of our 1898 William Weeks Victorian from a drab block of fading paint (and disguised wood rot!) into a shining jewel befitting the Queen (Anne) that she is. It had been 15 years since our home was last painted, and not only was she looking worse for wear, but we also wanted a totally refreshed look - going from a rather uninspired lavender/deep blue color scheme to something brighter and more vibrant - as we are hosting my son's wedding at the home in Sept. Our house has all the "goodies" - lots of intricate floral decoration on the turret and tympanums, as wells as dentils, corbels, and shingle work, - all in 3-4 stories, and all requiring meticulous hand-detailing. For extra fun, we wanted to retain the gold leafing on the house, so those areas needed to be masked off expertly, without pulling off the giltwork. I had no idea how to call out colors, or really, what colors would work together on all those little parts. So Bill introduced me to a phenomenal colorist - Patricia Carr - who created our palette, Together she and Bill worked out the entire color map of the house, down to the last trim piece. As if that weren't challenging enough, during his extensive prep process, Bill uncovered rot in several places on my main house and the Garage/loft/studio (which was also part of the project). He repaired everything flawlessly; even cutting and installing the new wood parts for an exterior window trim and door jam on the garage. Once the painting process began, I was constantly impressed by not only their professionalism and attention to detail (BTW, Bill worked on site, right along with his crew), but also the respect and care they took in working around my property - my beloved roses were covered or tied back, trash was always gathered, and unused gear stowed away. Spectrum Painting transformed my kitchen cabinets! They look brand new; the finish is gorgeous. In addition, Bill's crew painted all the walls and trim in the kitchen, dining and front hall areas of my home. The work was affordable and done completely on schedule--and there wasn't a drop of paint anywhere but where it was supposed to be. The crew was a pleasure to have working in our house and so willing to be flexible with us when we changed our minds about color or which areas to paint. They were polite, careful and very skilled. Our carpenter threw out his back in the middle of our remodel and Bill's guys were able to hang all our cabinet doors and drawer fronts in his absence. The two decks and some separate steps in my backyard needed re-painting. Bill Schroeder came recommended by my handyman, who was familiar with decks he'd seen done by Bill Schroeder's company, Spectrum Painting. Mr. Schroeder replied to my inquiry promptly and said he was booked up for two months. When I explained that I wasn't in a hurry for the work to be done but would like an estimate, he said he would come out, which he did within a few days. He measured the two backyard decks and the separate steps that connect the two areas of the backyard. A few days later he emailed his bid for $800. Since it referred only to "decks" and not to the steps (which are not connected to either deck), I emailed for clarification: "I know that you measured the steps up to the gate between the lower and upper decks but they aren't mentioned in the description. Did you include those? Could you modify the bid to reflect them?" His reply was: "All the decks are included in the back yard." That did not address the question of the steps. I then phoned him, left a message that said his bid was good, and that I wanted to talk with him to finalize the arrangement, thinking that a phone call would clarify the question of the steps. He never contacted me again. Also, I had asked him when he visited my yard if he knew someone who could make me a screen door. He said he did and that he would send me the person's contact information. His email that included the bid did not say anything about a carpenter, so I also asked him about that when I asked for clarification about the steps. In his reply that is quoted (in part) above, he said, "I'm waiting to hear from my friend to see if he is interested in building a screen door. I will let you know either way." He never followed up with any additional information. This vendor began by being responsive but ended up with no follow through. read more

Awesome. From the first conversation, you will see that Bill knows exactly what needs to be done. He pointed out some ways to make the house look better. We took his advice and it looks great. The bid he gave us was very reasonable and then his large crew shows up and busts out all the work in four days, even though our house is very tall, about 4400 sq. ft. and a very steep roof. His crew was great. After the fact, we realized we picked the wrong color for the front door. I contacted Bill and shortly thereafter he had one of his guys show up to redo it for us. Bill and his crew did an excellent job, and they were all very professional. They painted the exterior of my house about 2 weeks ago and it looks great. I've gotten many compliments from friends and neighbors. Bill took the time to explain all aspects of the job and helped me evaluate color schemes. Once they started, I couldn't believe how quickly the job was done! Power washed the first day and then prepped/caulked/patched for two and by the end of the week everything was done. They were great at cleaning up after finishing -- I think my driveway was cleaner after they finished than before they started. The cost was reasonable and much lower than other quotes I obtained. I have only amazing feedback on Bill and his team at Spectrum painting. We met one day in November to have him take a look at our new home and provide an estimate on painting the interior. I'd prepared myself for a ~2 month wait on getting the painting done given how busy good painters are right now. But when Bill arrived, he told me that he'd just had a job reschedule, and his team could do it the very next day if I had colors ready. So I got the paint colors picked out that afternoon, texted him the names/paint chips that evening, and he and his team showed up the next morning with all the paint quantities in hand. They were professional, thorough, and left the house cleaner than it was when they arrived. They carefully marked every paint can by room so when I pull them out again I know what goes where. He added on a garage paint refresh that I requested that day, and he'd even caught one of my mistakes in referencing one of the paints by the wrong name. He's a funny guy with a wry sense of humor too (always a pleasure). I can't say enough about the quality of their work, the stellar communication offered by Bill, and how much trust I felt in leaving them to work in my house.
