HUGE MISTAKE! I called and signed up thinking I was getting a cheaper deal. Think again! After the installation, I was constantly up and down having to unplug and reboot. When I called and told them, they said, "oh, you didn't get wifi.". Ugh! Okay, no one told me wifi was additional but okay. Then nothing better so I called again. They said, "oh, you have an old router, we can set up with a new one but it's additional.". Okay, I'm done! I call AT&T, have them to come and set me up, call charter and tell them to come the same day to get their equipment. THEY DISCONNECTED MY EVERYTHING THAT MOMENT. for a week, I had no Internet, cable, it was g'day weekend, I had a house full of company and kids, I work from home, had to make arrangements to work somewhere else! The only reason I'm even a Charter customer is that I have little choice. They were significantly higher than Comcast and I will switch back to that competitor if given the chance. The installer was late and brought the wrong box (I explicitly requested an HD box with HDMI and he told my wife the component connectors were "the same thing." -- NOT EVEN CLOSE!) When researching my options the salesperson said there were no bandwidth caps or data limits. But buried deep on their website in an obscure corner is the truth in their terms of service legalese. Then I asked what the cost was after the promotional period ended, and they could only hazard an estimate. Then I asked if they could send to me or point me to a channel line-up so I could compare the different plans and they couldn't get one. I was eventually able to find it hidden away on their web page and after a couple of calls for clarification I built a spreadsheet that gave the answers they couldn't provide. Charter is just plain awful. I bundled my internet and phone service and now BOTH have outages all the time. I need to post this quick before it goes out again. The last time the tech came out to work on it, his solution was to unhook the splitter that runs cable to our TVs. If TV, phone and internet are all working it is a miracle. Consumerist magazine (not-for-profit subsidiary of Consumer Reports) calls Charter the "worst company in America." It's no wonder Charter went bankrupt a few years ago. This sleazy firm's business practices include: - cutting your satellite cable, then insisting that customer fight with Charter's 3rd party unlicensed contractor instead of honestly owning up to their mistake and correcting it. - moving your first bill due date ahead after first bill, without prior notification (told this is a "standard" Charter procedure on 2nd bill) - insisting that customers wait 45 days (unbelievable but true) for Charter's Autopay system to take effect, then warning that double payments may occur when customer attempts to make a one-time payment prior to the interim due date (as a safety measure) - moving from CSR agents in South Carolina to the Phillipines, where they lie to customers by claiming healthy account status with zero problems and confirming Autopay sign up weeks ago, then cutting off all services including (Emergency 911) shortly thereafter, without prior notice - migrating from helpful humans to speak with or chat online (about no-service issues) to worthless automated systems - poor no-service reliability I really wanted to love Charter. Our credit history is well above 700 and we always pay bills on time. But after several serious attempts to cooperate with Charter, acting as a good customer to straighten out their billing errors, all of our attempts have been futile. I recommend that prospective customers view the 800+ complaints about Charter on another website, plus other sites, before wasting your time. In the past 5 weeks I've had 7 technicians out to my house. They've laid and buried a new line, replaced filters, and replaced splitters and my service still goes down at least once a week. For the most part I'm lucky to receive dial-up speeds and I'm paying for 25 Mbs. I also found out that you don't get credit for outages, even if you call and they tell you about them, unless you actually ask for the credit. Then when I complained about the poor performance and how I had to call every day for a week I was told they had no record of those calls because I used the automated operator. So none of the 15 technical calls were recorded as me having trouble with my service. Stay away if at al possible. read more

Let me start off by saying I hate them. It's absolutely ridiculous how many times my internet service has had outages since I got charter. It's hardly been a month. Oh and that 60 Mbps? If you're computer savvy and you can do your own speed test find out how much you're being robbed of that 60mbps. You can have the best modem, wireless router and turn off all but one of your online devices, They're still somehow going to cut down your internet speed. Charter shouldn't even be allowed to give internet service with the way their internet service operates. An outage happened in my neighborhood and I called and was told I needed a technician to come out and fix the issue. He came, fix it and I was charge $50 on my next statement. I was told it was free initially on the phone and after arguing on the phone for hours with customer reps/managers, I got $10 off, worst customer service ever. read more

Installer spent TWO HOURS trying to tell me we have a junction connection box. After showing him the wires in the Attic, NO CONNECTION BOX, showed him where the wires came from the cable box in the yard, NO CONNECTION BOX, after looking in the Garage, NO CONNECTION BOX, after looking under the steps, NO CONNECTION BOX. He finally determined is was straight wire into the house,; which is what we told him all along. then TWO More Hours to install and equipment in the house DOESN'T WORK. High Price for very slow and unreliable Internet, and worthless cable TV channels. Consistent problems with Internet dropping, speeds slowing from 60Mbps, which is what Im paying for, to as low as 2.5Mbps... Multiple restarts of modem required. The Support people, while friendly, are not helpful as they have very basic understanding of networks and how they work and are unable to do anything except remotely restart the modem. Frankly, Ive had Verizon, AT&T, Cox, XFinity, and every single one of them are exponentially better and more reliable than Charter. Complete junk. Stay away. read more

Rocky relationship with Charter, we live in an apartment that only allows Charter even though it is illegal to do so. First 3 months the listed speeds were a fantasy, with internet slowdowns and lost packets out the wazooo. It has settled a bit and is now giving us the speeds most of the time, but recently the entire Charter network is going out at night. When that new G-Fast net releases in our area, the apartment complex cannot stop it as it goes through regular phone lines with 750mbs guaranteed up and down, we are switching to it. read more

There needs to be competition with this arrogant company- They rip off customers that have been with them for years,they add services that That are never ordered, when you call them they make up bogus excuses, sorrys and then try to sell other services or change your package, so that it cost more. They constantly charge for services not ordered- my bill has never been the same. It is a shame that this company is existing in this country. They should be revoked their operation license. Awful service. I have intermittent Internet and tel connectivity the last couple weeks. I called the technical support. I had to wait for more than 45 minutes. Then I ended up in Phillipines. A lady with awful English was reading the bla bla text from a booklet. I kept asking her to help me and she was still reading. When I asked her how much technical knowledge she has, she got upset and put the phone down and I was out. Then I tried to get on-line help through their web site. I waited for half an hour and nobody answered. I gave up after spending 2 hours in total. I am at square one again. They operate as if they are NOT in the USA because for them the customer satisfaction does not mean anything. Terrible company!! I will get a new service provider. I assume the skewed ratio of poor reviews is from people who have recently been wronged and are looking for a place to vent their frustration. Overall, Charter has been very good for me for several years. Although there have been a few issues, as a network engineer myself, I understand how complicated things can be in a large company. When I first got Charter internet, several months after it was available in my area, they had to come out and hang a new line to my house. They did this 2 days before x-mas. On x-mas eve we had a storm and the newly hung line blew partially down and a snow plow snagged it, ripping it down. The day after x-mas they came back out and re-hung the line. The next day a tech was installing my service. After the service was installed, it didn't take long to notice it was going to hell at peak times. I did my testing and realized where in their network the issue was. Dealing with any Tier 1 customer service [at any company, these days] is just being routed to a call center where someone reads to you from a troubleshooting program. Those people were not going to be helpful for the issue I knew I had, so I contacted the complaints department to explain the situation and have them pass it down the line. He replied to me immediately and they were working on it. It did take some time, because it was actually bad fiber which required digging, permits, etc. Since then, in about 7 years, I've only had a handful of times where it has been down any real length of time, and I'm very conscious of packet loss, etc. I can tell you that I've dealt with ATT and other telcos in my career where I was paying for lines that cost $1500+/mo and weren't fixed right for months. Compared to that, Charter has bent over backwards for my $60/mo. I don't have TV or Phone service from them, just Internet. My only complaint with them right now is the lackluster upload speeds offered today. Download speeds available are adequate, but not stellar. We had a terrible experience with the switch from ATT. Service lady said all services including free telephone line, dvd and internet would be $89. WE got a bill for $165. Did not get 3 DVR only 1. Were not told we could see any recorded channel on any television. Can only see on TV that is used to recored. Were also told by salesperson that tech can transfer all saved dvr recordings; complete lie. She knew it could not be done. I'm sure we were not the 1st people in the history of DVR who asked that question. Internet goes in and out and we constantly loose connection; a disaster when trying to do an online live lecture. Then were told after canceling that we would still be responsible for install fee; which they eventually cancelled. We had the same false representation with our Business service but it was such an ordeal to get it working with such a large expense that it was not worth switching back. We have had Charter cable for 15 years. Recently, we had interrupted service and our cable box turning on randomly including in the middle of the night. We called Charter for a repair. The repairman came out and said it was a problem at the main box and he could not repair the issue. After 2.5 months of this problem we asked Charter for a credit. We spoke to two supervisors and Charter refused to credit us stating it was just an inconvenience. We are looking forward to having other options in the near future. In the meantime, if anyone in Smyrna, GA is receiving great service from another provider, please post as we would very much like to move our service. read more

Charter has a monopoly in my college town, and it is by far the WORST provider. My roommates and I pay $140 a month for cable and internet- a ridiculous amount to start. We just found out we have been paying a $20 HD fee every month and have never been able to actually get HD channels on our tv. The internet goes out every couple weeks, is slow, and the tv is also quite awful. For all that money we get maybe 30 channels. On Demand is the only thing good about the tv. The customer service reps are nice and try to be helpful, but the company is awful. read more

If you are satisfied with getting 1/5 the speed you are paying for then this is the ISP for you. Download speeds are horrible and hover around 1mb (I pay for 5mb) and upload speeds are about 114kb which is at least faster than dialup 56k connection. I was very unhappy with charter's customer service, but an employee named Tamika (Smyrna, GA ofifice) solved all my problems, that I had spent days try to solve, in about 5 minutes. I'm not sure how many stars I would give charter, but Tamika gets 10 stars in my book. She is the only reason I still use charter. If you are thinking of having charter as you're provider, I would recommend going by your local branch office and seeing who you will be dealing with when (and it will happen) they make a mistake. read more

Why is it that somehow your company approved a payment twice to come out of my bank . Which let me say I have never even used a check to pay bills . And will never use a check to pay bills ? Why can Noone explain who approved of this and why are all your customer service people rude and incompetent ? Worst service ever . Before I start let me say I only gave one star because yelp makes you click at least one. After my frustration with Charter I would prefer to give -27 stars. Now I normally try to be objective with reviews and usually discount the outlier disgruntled customer whether it be anything from restaurants to plumber companies. I have been fighting with charter over an issue for approximately a year and a half now. It all started in April 2013. Charter is my ONLY option for cable providers at my house even though Comcast is available approximately 1.5 miles in one direction, U-verse is available 1.5 miles in another and Verizon fios is ran 0.25 miles away to the front of my neighborhood, but the cable companies all kindly decided to be anti-competitive to keep rates high. I had 3 cable boxes at my home. I also never, ever, even once, ordered On Demand movies. I was guilty like many of not closely examining my monthly cable bill since it was auto-drafted but in July 2013 I happened to notice on a statement that I was being charged for a 4th cable box. I went back and looked at statements to see that this started occurring in April 2013. Not only that but I was being charged for multiple on Demand movies every month that I didn't order. I finally noticed in July because several adult films were ordered that are apparently about 12 bucks a movie so it made a sizable increase on the bill. I called and they assured me someone had to be ordering those movies and they also couldn't figure out how to remove that mysterious extra cable box from my account. Now I realize there are situations where kids might be ordering movies without parents knowing or possibly even an mischievous husband ordering porn behind his wife's back but this wasn't the case for me. I even had the customer service rep tell me I needed to check my locks because someone might be coming in my house. Okay, I get people lie about ordering porn....but you are telling me someone broke into my house without causing any damage on a Thursday night at 11pm while my wife and I were both currently on a flight across the country to watch Edward Scissor Hands...FREAKING EDWARD SCISSOR HANDS for $3.99 and not steal a single thing and then lock the house when they left! It took about 10 phone calls, 15 different customer service reps and about 15 hours of my wife and my time over 2 months to get approximately $200 of movies we never ordered refunded to us. But there was still the mysterious cable box that kept showing up on our bill. Basically this cable box was out there somewhere in someone's house (probably the person ordering porn and Edward Scissor Hands) and was somehow linked to our account even though I was assured that was impossible. Every time a rep manually took it off our account the system would kick it back on because some internal check mechanism saw it was out there in use somewhere. This is where the real time and frustration came in. I am not exaggerating when I say I called 25 times over a 7 month period. I got to the point where I could basically say everything the rep was going to tell me...."A investigation report would be filed and go to the equipment research department and I would need to wait 3-4 weeks until the investigation was complete". I waited each time and each time it still showed back up. Apparently each time I got a new rep they blamed the old rep on not sending the paper work in properly but they (as much more competent reps) would be more than happy to initiate the process again. I finally got to someone's bosses' bosses' boss and he must of been a MENSA member because somehow he got it to stop showing up on my bill. Shortly after this I was so frustrated and rates kept going up that I cancelled cable TV. Fast forward 6 months later, after successfully using AEREO for several months they were unfortunately shut down by the Federal Supreme Court and I was stuck again. I was weak and unfortunately gave in to Charter when they gave me an enticing new rate offer. So the tech comes to install 2 (TWO!!!) boxes this time and low and behold the mysterious box has freaking resurrected and come back to show on my account and haunt my dreams. The tech (and let me specify this is true of all the service techs I've had at my house) was very understanding and truly as helpful as could be. Hell, he was frustrated with the situation because it was causing problems for his set up. He at least somehow after talking to customer service himself in my living room for about an hour was able to get the mystery box put in some sort of inactive or dormant status so it might still be affiliated with my account but shouldn't show on my bill (which is all I really care about). I'm eagerly awaiting my first full months bill to see if it shows. But just today I got a message from Charter asking me to please return my equipment (the mystery cable box). As of today, 1.5 years after this started, my nightmare continues. read more

I am a new customer under a year with Charter, I decided to go with this company based on the positive reviews from customers. In the month on Jan, I was layed off from my job. Living on severance, I made arrangements monthly paying the minimal. I spoke with Hanna and Amber, both pleasant ladies who told me that they are unable to assist me with an additional arrangement till my payday. I explained that I just started a new job, working from home and need the internet to keep my job. I have my first full check on march 4th in which I explained I will pay the full amount past due, knowing that the current amount will also be past due as well. I asked for a supervisor and spoke with Lincoln. Lincoln, was also said there is nothing that can be done. I then asked for Lincolns supervisor, and I was told that there is no one above me, that he would take my name and number and someone will all me back in 3-5 days. Wow.. I'm not looking for a hand out, I'm looking for assistance, I can pay 1/2 the bill and the balance in 14 days and this is still not good enough for this company. They do not care about their customers, they don't care if you loose your job, they don't care. read more

I recently started Charter Service in late June. I have had to practically beg them to send me an invoice to pay my bill; yet, they have started calling me to collect in the past few days. In mid July, I realized I had not received a bill and that it was likely due. I was on approximately my 10th call with Charter regarding service issues with outages on cable and wifi internet. I inquired about the mailing address for my bill and had that corrected. In early August, I started receiving collection calls, yet they could not resend my bill without charging me $1.99 to reprint. My thought - they would save more than $2 in the salaries/commissions they pay to the billing/collections staff, if they would just absorb the $2 fee that I refuse to pay since I have not yet received my first bill. I've tried going online to review and pay my bill; however, I need a number off the invoice to do that and no one will give me that number over the phone. They call me when I am at work vs. in the evening. If they called in the evening, there is a code I can read off my cable box to give them so that they can give me my account number. It's just a vicious cycle of inefficiency and their service is unreliable. I had Uverse until I moved. Only one outage in over a year. Charter can't match that level of reliability and they are difficult to work with. My rating is a 2. Other issues: They tell you that you can purchase your own router vs. renting theirs. However, they don't tell you that they are limited in trouble-shooting issues, unless you rent their router. Overall the sales, support, billing communications could be greatly improved. I am not impressed 6 weeks into using Charter. I also had issues several years ago when I had them. They would tell me there was no outage in my area; however, my service was not working. They tried to trouble-shoot over the phone for two weeks and finally agreed to send someone out. The guy climbed up the pole and reported that someone had turned off the cable on the pole. Hmmmm....but the telephone technicians had insisted there was no outage in my area or at my home and tried to make me believe it was user error on my part. They certainly aren't providing stellar customer service, in my opinion. read more

We have had Charter for quite a while now since our apartment has a contract with them and their internet is atrocious. I have to constantly reboot the system (which is a pain when you have to work a great amount from home) and even then it only works about 60% of the time. Its a shame you have to pay 100% of a bill for barely over half of a service. Go with AT&T or some other carrier. read more

There is a 25$ fee for a rejected payment, but they can't tell you why a payment is rejected. Copied and pasted my account information directly into their website to pay my bill, 3 days after getting paid, and for some reason it was rejected. Instead of emailing me or posting it on my acct online, they mailed me a paper letter, which arrived today, Feb. 12th, a week after the payment was rejected... called customer service and the representative just kept saying "I'm sorry, anytime there is a rejected payment its a 25$ fee!" and they charge you an extra 5$ to pay on the phone...absolute crap. read more

I wanted to give Charter a try again, but it all started going downhill when a rude contractor hung up on me when I wouldn't allow him to come to our house in the morning (though our install time was from 3 - 5 PM). Apparently he didn't like the fact that no one would be home 6 hours before our scheduled install time. He then proceeds to come to our house an hour early anyway (fortunately my wife was home), and does a completely half-ass job. Wrong boxes placed in the wrong rooms, and the DVR didn't even work (which was also in the wrong room). His crowning achievement was to leave our house without telling anyone. When I call the office to find out what's going on, I discover the installer set up a return appointment for the next morning (even though no one would be home). I now have to wait for these clowns to come back out and take their crap back. Thankfully I hadn't made the call to DirecTV to cancel services yet. I will gladly pay a premium to DirecTV rather than deal with Charter. read more

Worst customer service ever. They have my name incorrect on the account. Been trying to get it corrected for over 2 months. They actually ended up screwing themselves by selling our name and address to businesses nearby. Have a stack of mail with that jacked up name Charter gave me. Filed a Better Business Bureau complaint along with one to the FCC for violation of privacy. Even the certified idiots they have on staff to address the BBB complaint (someone by the name of Gaspar Gomez was assigned my case at Charter) won't pick up the phone after making BIG promises on fixing everything. Unless he got fired, no reason to not complete the case. It's a simple spelling correction. Perfect home but got stuck with Charter. If they had smarter people on the team, they'd be on a more advanced platform. They are about 4 versions behind Comcast. If Charter doesn't know how to keep technology updated, they should really just back off and let us be graced with Comcast's presence. Praying hard that Charter will just go away and let Comcast do what they do best: provide exceptional customer service AND advanced technology. read more

I have been a customer since it was Smyrna Cable in 1992 at which time the service was SO MUCH BETTER. The cable never went out even during a major storm and the channels were clear. Since Charter has taken over and "upgraded" the service is good at best but most times freezes up for no reason at all. My voice mail stopped working for no reason at all and it took almost a week to correct - they only credited me $3.37. My internet goes down for no reason at all and although I am paying for 60 mbps I did a speed test and am only getting 3 mbps. When I try to look at something ON DEMAND, I receive an error message stating that the service is not available. They consistently go up on the prices yet are not providing quality service. I have spoken to a Charter rep more in the last 6 months than I have to some family members. I could go on and on about the lack of quality service that I am paying a fortune for but it only upsets me. As others have stated, given the option I would have left years ago but as Charter has a complete monopoly in my area (my only other option would be Direct TV which is no option at all for me), I would have left them yesterday. read more
