The guy on the register named Gregory was very friendly and efficient. He was patient with me when I was still deciding what donut I wanted and even suggested some that he and his co-workers like. I didn't feel rushed and took my time even though there was a line forming behind us. His willingness to work and ebullient behavior made for a fun/comforting ambiance. My Aunt showed Gregory a photo of a recipe of how she would like her Specialty Pumpkin Brew to be made. He asked politely if he could hold her phone to view the ingredients listed closer. She also wondered if he could put the special ordered drink in a cup she brought. He made the drink exactly as she wanted and in her own cup. Plus, he added a good amount of whip cream on top. She was very pleased. All the while serving us with a smile I'd say that's the cherry on the top! As for my Ma her coffee was made a little too light and she asked for help to darken it from another worker. He was a gentleman he reached over the divider to retrieve it, so she wouldn't have to burn herself, since it was filled to the top. He added more coffee to her cup to darken for her without any issues. We didn't catch his name, but we appreciate his and Gregory's service. We look forward to our next visit whenever we are in this area again. ~ And before you assume I'm not sugarcoating this! :] ~

If you're looking for a basic, classic diner experience in, or near Cobleskill, you can't get much…read moremore spot-on than the Cobleskill Diner. We were visiting a relative in town and my wife, son and I took him for a late lunch at the diner. (Which we treated as breakfast, served all day. We were seated at a booth near the entrance...the upholstery needed a little help, and overall the place could use a little sprucing up. There's advertising on everything...the placemats, the coffee mugs, the glasses. At first, I thought it was a retro decor style choice until I realized all of these were featuring current local business ads. The coffee was okay. I've had worse but there was some flavor in it so it was a step above the "browned water" you can get at other places. The food was good enough for a classic diner experience. Not elevated in any way, but classic dishes served, well, classically. The breakfast potatoes were good and I was happy they were able to do egg whites without any question or up-charge in my breakfast. Portion sizes were okay. My teenage son needed to ask for an additional piece of French toast with his meal as he was still hungry after finishing the initial serving (with eggs and potatoes) We can chalk that up to a teenage appetite. I think the sweet-spot of the Cobleskill diner is the prices. They're low. You can get the same meal at diners in other places for twice the price. This makes it feel like a place that supports the local community. Our server was nice and took good care of us.

The sugaring features a small tour of their mid-sized and pretty impressive boiler (call first to make sure it's running, though, if you want to experience its full noisy hot glory) and an explanation of the sugaring process. You can also get a short hayride for a buck through part of their sugarbush (about 20 minutes). There's not a whole lot else to do for the kids, but they do have free samples of sugar candy. The little store itself sells lots of maple products (syrup, sugar, cream, maple nuts, maple coffee), a few other farm items (notably fresh eggs and frozen beef from the farm next door), jams, and some gifty things (very nice hand-crafted mugs, some books, a few other miscellaneous decorative items). It's not huge, as I said there's not a whole lot to do other than the boiler tour and the hayride, but it's definitely worth a detour during sugaring season and a quick stop if you're ambling through the countryside otherwise. Very friendly family-run farm. They do have an on-line store (see URL, which I hope the Yelp elves will add now that I've submitted an update) and I recommend their stuff as tasty, naturally-grown upstate product. Worth supporting. If you like antique stoves, this is probably worth a side trip. They have a big one in mint condition that looks well over a 100 years old. Navigational tip: Google maps can't find the address here for some reason; go to the corner of Grovenor's Corner and Crommie lanes, the entrance to Maple Hill is on the south side 25 yards past the intersection on the west side; note a little hillside cemetery, which you drive past going up the drive to the farm.
