Love the staff here! Always fresh food and hot coffee! One of the best convenience stores in Sparta! Plus who doesn't love speedway points?

I live in Ashe County and drive by this place every day but I had never stopped at Pop's before…read moretoday. On my way back from work earlier I was craving a soda and thought I'd stop in and check it out since it seemed like an interesting place and the Speedway is usually really crowded. The first thing you notice when you walk in is a big Confederate flag and a sign that says "we don't dial 911" with a handgun pointing out at you. That stuff doesn't really bother me since I grew up in the area, but my girlfriend is from up north so I thought she would get a kick out of it since she's not used to seeing stuff like that. In hindsight I should've asked permission to take a photo, but the owner seemed busy so I went ahead and snapped a picture nonchalantly. I grabbed my Cheerwine and went to the register. This is where things get ugly. The owner (I'm guessing the eponymous "Pops") asked me in a threatening manner "why are you taking a picture of my beer cooler?" I calmly tried to explain that I was taking a picture of the signs in the back. He called me a liar and again demanded to know why. I said the same thing, then he got really aggressive, raising his voice, and demanded to see the picture I took. This went on for what seemed like forever, but was probably only a minute or two. I hate being called a liar and I hate being ordered around as most country people do, but I'm sure this guy had numerous loaded weapons under the counter so I said "Fine, I don't have to show you but here you go." He looked at the photo and said, satisfyingly, "oh yeah I'm proud of that." We finished the transaction and that was that. He didn't apologize or try to explain what was so important about the beer coolers or anything. I went into the store that day to find a new place to buy drinks, snacks, and maybe even feed for my livestock. However, I left feeling angry and resentful. I do not recommend this place to anyone, but I'm sure "Pops" has a core group of regulars that keep his place in business and my review probably won't make much of a difference. However, if you have never been a customer before don't bother giving this hateful man your money.
