I'm not a big videogame guy but unfortunately its not hard to miss the number that the swarm of PlayStation and X-Box zealots have done on the slot car business. Where once there were tracks all over New York and New Jersey, their numbers have been culled to a precious few, catering to the aging hard core hobbyist and the occasional nostalgia junkie such as myself who still enjoys the pleasures of a tactile experience over a virtual one. All that said SpeedZone is a blast. While I no longer have the cars or equipment that I collected as a kid, just go in and rent a car, controller and some track time and you're off. The track is reasonably fast and kept in excellent condition. Even the adolescent vegetables who had to be torn away from their game consoles in the middle of a Call Of Duty slaughter were smiling from ear to ear. Real fun, with real objects that go really fast. Go ahead, you just might like it. read more

Fun for a bit, but definitely an old dude hobbyist hang. Kind of not super inviting to casual patrons that just want to rent some cars and race with their kids. Like if you don't come in with the custom racer and a giant toolbox and are " in the know" about the hobby, you'll get the outsider vibe thrown your way. I just laugh it off because, real talk, they are grown ass men playing with children's toys. And no matter how much money and gear, and workbench time they wanna put into it, that's an unquestionable, unchanging fact. Still, it's kind of a drag for novice kids with the rented cars when these "pro" guys take over the tracks with their ten times faster cars. This is obviously a defacto clubhouse for these types of "serious hobbyist" dudes and you can really tell that they'd rather not have to deal with regular off the street people looking to kill some time with their kids. Seems like it could be okay if you bring a kids party there and just take over the whole place for a few hours. Otherwise it's kind of only for curmudgeonly old baby boomer hobby guys that got into slot cars when they were kids. Limited appeal for kids of now. There's a reason the slot car craze of the late 60s- mid 70s largely died out and has been relegated to niche hobby; More fun and engaging options for kids came along. Which reminds me: The Funplex is just up the road from here. They'll be much happier to see you and your kids show up. read more

Stopped by after a soccer tournament in Langhorne, and introduced myself and my 12 year old son to slot car racing. 12 dollars rented a car and controller for 30 minutes per person...and yes, it went past quickly. Raced with two other dads and their three boys on the large 6-lane banked track, and action was plentiful! Also tried the JerseyDevil flat track, which was quite challenging. Couldn't get to see the drag track in action, but it looks equally fun. A store area stocks all parts for 1/24 racing, pinewood Derby supplies, and modeling kits and paints. Not much for the ho-scale slots, however. Talked with one of the owners on the way out, who was very nice. Apparently, this is one of the best facilities in the east, with people coming in to events from around the world. Pretty cool! Slot cars will take you back to your childhood, and with fun available on this scale, speed zone may bring you back frequently! Not a bad place to spend time, especially with your kids! read more

My son had his 5th Birthday party here. His 5 friends ages ranged from 5-7 and boy were they interested. Arranging it was easy because the employees had a wonderful family like customer service attitude. They were all so helpful with continuous smiles on their faces. THE KIDS LOVED THE SLOT CAR RACING! Great fun! Brought three people here and we raced for an hour. It went by in a blink. Mark at SpeedZone was great in reserving four lanes for us on a Saturday afternoon. They have "beginner" cars (which are called eight seconds cars - the length of time an expert can circle the track once). They also have "advanced" cars (four seconds - you can barely see them racing on the track). The cars flipping off the track is just as fun as racing around it. We'll be back! read more

For those not familiar with SpeedZone, it is a Slot Car Raceway located in Mount Holly, NJ. I used to go to a slot car track when I was a young boy and brought my kids here a couple months back to share the same experience. I was fighting them the entire time for the controller. I should have just gotten another lane and car. We had so much fun that I booked a birthday party here for my son's 8th Birthday. The package we chose included 1 hour of track time for 8 kids and a half hour in the party room with snacks, drinks, pizza and we supplied the cake. None of the other kids at the party had ever seen a slot car track this HUGE and couldn't wait to get racing. After some quick instructions, they were off racing. I thought they would just set us up with 8 cars and let the kids at it, but I was pleasantly surprised that a couple of the staff was there to play car games with the kids and to organize races. They even put the cars back on the track for the kids so they could get right back to the fun. Chuck E. Cheese's, done that. International Sports Center, been there. Pump it up, not again.
