Spell's is a cute little dancewear shop with two locations here in the Nashville area. Today, I visited the one out in Brentwood. Now, I don't dance...I gave up on that around the 8th grade--never was very good. But I have heard so many good things about Spell's from people who do love the sport, that I had to check it out. A very nice lady (Ms. Spell, maybe? I think she was the owner) greeted me, and showed me around the store. It's pretty much all dancewear and costumes for all ages...from toddler to old age. They have a small selection of yoga wear as well. Prices seemed, well, normal as far as I could tell. A nice pair of yoga pants that felt SO good were $35, and I've seen them far more expensive. Now, the gold lamay (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) leotard with hot pink sequins? I have nothing to compare that to, but at $25 I think it seemed reasonable enough. As I walked through the door images of all those years of dance recitals came flooding back. Those pale pink tights and some ridiculous costume. Mothers fussing back stage with bobby pins so that their little girl's hair stayed in a tight bun. This store is all that and more. I like what they have to offer. Very nice plain black leotards, a must for every dancer, and funky ones with feathers flying everywhere. My dance teacher would never have let that in her studio, but that's just how it went for me! Anyway, they have great leggings, quality lycra tops, and ballet shoes to boot. I agree with Robin S. The prices are on line with any store of this nature. If you dance, or your child does, it's worth having a look. Or a trip down memory lane. read more

My Grandaughter has been dying study ballet for much of her short life. Now that she's the ripe old age of four, she was beyond excited to get her new ballet clothes. I rushed home from work, picked her up from preschool and we got to this store at 5:40 (they close at 6). It was dark and there was no explanation why they closed early. Really? Behavior problems associated with over priced clothing and accessories. The shoe prices seem to be better or on par with other stores. Upon entering at 5:35 PM two women employees told us if we're here for our first pair of point shoes and need to be fitted it requires one hour and they close at 6:00 PM. We told her we're indeed here to get fitted for point shoes so lets get started. She didn't get started. She further explained that we could start now and finish another time if necessary. We again said "lets get started." She then said "It's up to you." Again we stated "Lets get started." We finished choosing a pair of shoes and and started looking for skirts and pants but the employees were impatiently standing at the register. We didn't buy anything else due mostly to their behavior and over priced clothing and accessories. The door was locked promptly behind the butt of the last person. read more

Lack of inventory: I have been in Spell's a dozen times and only twice have they had the items I needed. Black and pink leotards and ballet slippers are basic items but they seem to be difficult to keep in stock. Poor customer service: Last week (9/2012) I picked out an adult small black leotard with $18 written on the tag. An identical adult small black leotard was tagged with $23. I asked the difference and the sales girl said, "The $18 price is for a child's leotard, we marked that wrong." I said, "But you should sell it to me for the price marked." The sales girl apologized but refused to sell me the leotard marked $18. I had planned to buy 3 additional leotards, tights, and ballet slippers but walked out of the store. I calmly told her that it was not good customer service to refuse to sell an item for the price marked. She was willing to lose an $80 sale over $5. I will buy my dance items online from now on. read more

I bought a pair of jazz shoes for my daughter yesterday and once I got home realized they gave me two left shoes. I took them back this afternoon and told the employee I would just rather return them as I had to drive all the way out there to get the right shoe and my daughter wasn't really sure she liked them anyway, so I'd just like my money back. She said it was against store policy to return anything even with a receipt, and she could only give store credit. There was only one other style of tan jazz shoes in the store to choose from and I didn't think my daughter would like that pair any better so I asked that she speak to her manager and explain the situation. She went to the back and said she called her manager and was told they only allowed store credit. Seriously, how have they remained in business with that type of customer service? I hope these overpriced $46 shoes was worth it to them because they just lost all future business from this dance mom. read more

I am a fifteen year veteran of the stage, and I'm currently prusuing an instructor's certification for Zumba, so I have a solid working knowledge of dance supplies. Spell's had a great selection of shoes and apparel! I was espically impressed with their knitwear selection, lots of great legwarmers and legwarmer/sweater combinations. They carry the best brands of dancewear for extened quality and long life. I will defininately have to visit them again the next time I'm in Nashville! read more
