The space was nice and cooling with a good view since we were on the fourth floor. Pilates kicked my butt literally, I didn't realize how many muscles it would target. My core and glutes were on fire at the end. We were doing the Pilates reformer class, and it involved a lot of stretching and holding with the machine. I have been waiting to write a review regarding this business for quite some time. After attending a few sessions over a few months with different instructors, I feel confident to leave a 5 star review. So far I have taken classes with Doria, Sasha and Samantha. There are more instructors, but the professionalism displayed amongst the three highlights that this facility is most elite in the business. I have went to boutique studios in the past, but the design of their website, friendly atmosphere, and challenging workouts make it a no brainer to sign up every month. There are a multitude of varying time selections, especially mid day classes which is VERY hard to find in the area. Additionally, they do different types of classes, so you can break up the routine if you get bored. Although Pilates is not as strenuous as a strength training workout in the gym, it is challenging to work on core, balance and spine alignment. Pilates is a lifestyle approach to healthy living, not just for looking good. I cannot imagine my life without it after finding this studio. They are not a super fancy place, but nothing is broken with their method, so I wouldn't change a thing. Can't wait to attend my next class already! I love this studio! It's clean, bright & welcoming. The studio is broken down into 4 separate training rooms & they offer more than just a Pilates reformer class. You can choose from Pilates mat, tower, reformer, chair, jumpboard, pregnancy Pilates classes. They also have barre, yoga, Pilates playground with the Motr apparatus & more, seriously just go check out the website for all they offer at affordable rates. All the instructors that I have taken class with are wonderful. Spenser, Samantha, Sasha, Doria & Masako are excellent instructors with clear cues & challenging classes. Each instructor has their own flare which makes choosing what class you want to take almost harder than the class itself. Each instructor is knowledgeable & cares that each student are using correct form & proper breathing techniques. Classes that I have taken have had at the most 6 people in them, it makes the classes more intimate & the instructors able to go around & give corrections when/if needed. my first class was a less than okay experience due to the instructor I had, she was very strict and harsh and moved very fast, and even made some comments about people "not paying attention" and I just feel like that's a very negative thing to say about an environment that should be welcoming to everybody regardless of skill level. I almost didn't go back but decided to give it a few more tries, after taking a few more classes with other instructors I am falling in love with Pilates and enjoying the classes there. I have taken two classes here thanks to Classpass: Barre & Reformer. I learned so much in both classes. Both instructors were so kind and really gave me tons of attention to help me correct my form / posture and teach me more about Barre/Pilates. I am not familiar with either and my impression is that the classes here are great for all levels. I'm no longer intimidated by using the reformer. Environment is very relaxed and that makes for a good workout. I feel at ease even when I have no idea what I am doing. Their classes are fire!! I highly recommend them and was astounded by my body's flexibility with their Pilates Reformer class. For context, I've taken over 100 barre classes and some Pilates Mat classes so I did have exposure to Pilates in the past but have never used machines. I took a class with Gessica who was extremely attentive. She corrected my postures so I had good form throughout the entire class. I was in awe at my body's ability - at one point with my tailbone off of the base of the machine and my spine lifting up - the feeling is unbelievable! I could say now I'm hooked on Pilates reformer classes. I then took a Pilates Barre class immediately after work Elisabeth who was upbeat and also gave ample instructions. The Pilates Barre classes are good even for beginners and open to all levels from what I experienced. My friend and I got a Groupon for 3 classes. Spencer's offers a variety of classes in Forest Hills. Great location because there's lots of buses, trains and parking nearby. (Iffy on the parking but you get the point). Our favorite class was the Pilates Reformer/Tower with Gosia. She is an amazing instructor who is easy to follow and extremely patient! She gives you tips and shows you what you can do if a certain position is uncomfortable. We also did Zumba on saturday morning which was packed but so well organized. I am really happy I found this spot through class pass. I've done Mat Pilates, but really wanted to learn some more moves with the reformer. I took a fundamentals class, which I really needed. This was a lunchtime class and there were about 7 people (which seemed to be about the max). I really enjoyed it. I got a sample of all kinds of moves that Pilates has to offer. Form was really paid attention to by the instructor. Just what I needed. I love to be corrected. I need to know I'm doing it right and not leaving myself open to injury. This class was just the right amount of challenging and informative. Location is also great! It's 3 stops on the train from me and then just a 2 minute walk. For a while I've been wanting to try a reformer/tower class and finally found one via Classpass. The main studio is located on the 4th floor (this floor has the reformers/towers as well as front desk check in) and the 2nd floor is the regular pilates/yoga floor. My class had only 7 students plus the instructor (Kristin) - the room catered to a total 8 with 8 reformers/towers. I really liked the size of the class because the instructor was able to pay close attention for form correction easily. For my first experience, I felt good after class and will be back for another class in the near future. There are no lockers here but there are hangers and chairs and a shoe rack available for you to leave your personal belongings. read more

Local studio, great reviews, had to give this a try as I've been trying to get into pilates for awhile now. Great location, a couple blocks from the train station on one of the side streets between Austin St/Queens Blvd. The studio is on the 4th floor, and the elevator comes pretty quickly. Classes are small, so this allows a lot of individual attention and instruction, as there are a lot of regulars and beginners. And the instructor can easily remember your name, making it seem like a very friendly and welcoming environment. Everyone who helps you at the front desk are nice as well. I don't remember all their names, as I'm still fairly new. I tried several pilates reformer/tower classes with different instructions: Maria, Samantha, and Masoko. All were very friendly, helpful, and were not intimidating at all with their teaching style (important for a beginner). Classes flew by, and in addition to being on the reformer all the time, we also made use of other equipment like the ring, thera band. They are accommodating too, if you're too hot, they're willing to adjust the AC settings, for example. They want their clients comfortable. It's the little things that count, just willing to listen to someone's issues or complaints for something as simple as room temperature. Bathrooms are clean (there are two of them), fully stocked with soap, toilet paper, and plenty of paper towels. Not a lot of room to wait anywhere. So if you arrive early and class is still in session, you can either sit on the small bench near the front desk, or stand. Inside the class, there are some chairs and hooks for your belongings. Can't wait to come back and try more classes or whatever new offerings they have. read more

This is by far my absolute favorite pilates studio ever! I feel so fortunate to have found this gem in in Forest Hills. I have been taking pilates classes for over 20 years at various studios in the city, but Spencer Arts is unique. They offer a great variety of classes at different levels, and even offer cardio pilates, yoga classes, barre, and dance classes as well. The instructors are wonderful and they take the time to correct your form when necessary. I love trying new classes which they constantly add to their schedule. I have met some amazing people there as well. Spencer and Samantha are the owners. And they also teach classes. Their customer service is outstanding, and they are extremely accommodating. First, I'd like to mention that their customer service was awesome. I called to see if I can add a friend to the class which was already fully booked and they were very helpful to put her in the class to replace the last minute cancelation. My favorite Pilates studio! I've been coming since June and I really love that they offer several classes throughout the day unlike most places that offer just early mornings or evenings. I've only tried the open reformer classes and have really enjoyed the full body workout. All the instructors are wonderful and are very mindful of any injuries or body concerns. The studio is located off of Austin street where parking can be a bit tough so I usually come 20 minutes early. The reformer classes are located on the top floor and the studio is very clean, the reformer room has a wall of windows with a nice view of the city. The best part is seeing and feeling the difference in my body, and I love that I'm able to work my entire body in each class. You'll always leave feeling wonderful and taller after each class. read more

A great Pilates Studio in Forest Hills! Located across a few levels in a new building, it offers pilates, yoga, barre and combo classes. I first took a kids yoga class there a few years ago and recently got an Amazon Local Coupon for 3 classes. Upon calling, Spencer, the owner, asked me if I would like a personal session to get to know the basics, since I've never done Pilates before. He offered it for a affordable price and I was happy to oblige! The intro session was great. I will admit that it will probably take more than one class to get to know it all better. I went for my second session and while waiting, Spencer asked if I wanted to check out a combination class. It was awesome! A great way to target the core without the draining intensity. Called to inquire prices for group classes. Spencer the owner was nice on the phone, but didn't remember the prices. Fine, he asked Samantha and she answered with an attitude aggressively. Saying "I don't understand why she wants to know." Well first of all it's your business and there's nothing wrong with inquiring about prices. This is so I have an understanding of the prices when everything opens up I can decide to join or not. Also, I had filled out a form online. No one responded. Samantha probably deleted it anyways. I was excited to come here, but after that phone call I didn't feel welcomed. It's too bad because I live so close. Maybe it's a good place I don't know that's what the reviews said. Took my first reformer/tower class here over the weekend with Hsia and am so impressed! The transition in between classes was pretty seamless considering one class starts the minute the other ends (which is how many other studios work). She started with great warm ups and a diversified workout. She also made she we were all focused on technique and even though the class was all different skill levels, made sure to walk around and give attention to everyone. Really clean studio, and I was happy that they sold a great selection of sticky socks for the sames prices you would see online. Nice people in the class too. Last June I broke my foot and cracked some small bones during Covid. I was looking at surgery but somehow avoided it. After my cast and many other gadgets came off my dr said I could only walk half a block. My foot was stiff and my toes wouldn't bend, also I was in pain. Spencer had just re-opened the studio only for privates...I went to see him as I had been a member before Covid. Within 2 weeks my foot was no longer stiff and my toes were bending.. Well last week I injured my leg, right above my knee...playing around with my friend-kinda thinking I'm still young... I took a few days off from Pilates and then decided to call Spencer and train.. OMG, magic! He knew exactly where I was injured and we did do Pilates today. I'm so happy, I feel so much better and will see him again tomorrow for a double class with my friend. I came to Spencer Pilates in January of 2018 after I had my back surgery. I was still in a lot of pain and my doctors were talking about more surgeries. I heard about pilates but never tried as I was a skeptical about it. I have been with Spencer and Samantha since January and my back has improved. I am working with Spencer and he is great. He has knowledge, constantly educates himself and very calm. Thanks to his patience and my determination, my body feels better, I walk better, I stand better and I almost free of pain. I believe it is a life time commitment and I am all for it. Spencer, the head of Spencer Pilates is absolutely brilliant at what he does. Patient, meticulous, and, frankly, a bit of a miracle worker, Spencer has exceeded my expectations for Pilates. I have been to many of the well-known, prestigious Pilates studios in Manhattan--Kinected, Bent, and various others, and my perception is that Spencer's work is better. I'm also reluctant to say this, because I don't want to be unable to get an appointment with him, but the work is that good. It's sensitive and nuanced, and has helped me with some deep-seated ongoing issues after a car accident and various other "little" (really, not so little) injuries and problems. Some of the other reviews mention that it's not enough of a "workout," but I find the classes challenging. bought a groupon and thought it was a great deal since i've always wanted to try pilates allegro. i like that the class size is really small, only 6 people per class. you get a lot of attention and correction from the instructors. the instructors are really nice and correct your body position frequently which i find extremely helpful. they really make you focus on core movement and different isolation. however, don't expect their classes to be a real workout. the classes are designed mostly for beginner beginners to pilates and maybe older people. wish they had a more "workout" routine. the instructors I have had class with: spencer: he focuses a lot on using your core. seems the post passionate. also corrects you a lot so definitely helpful samantha : good for very beginners to pilates. focuses on breathing and simple exercises jackie: probably the best one I've taken class with. good exercises to feel the stretch all over your body ilana: talks really fast. doesn't really correct you. she tends to sit in front of the class and tells u what to do really really fast jennifer: had my first class with her. she also has great exercises. read more

This studio has amazing instructors, fantastic equipment, a great clientele and the owners are so accommodating. Its like a family here. I started with pilates by purchasing Groupons to different studios and couldn't wait till I finished them all so I could sign up for the monthly subscription at Spencer Pilates. I've been coming 3x a week since September and love it more each time. A year ago I was bedridden and had to get a steroid shot in my lower back. Since coming here on a regular basis , I have not even had to go to my chiropractor! And thats another thing. The instructors here all ask you what issues or injuries you have so they know how to modify your workout. I Just love it here! read more

I once had a mat pilates teacher who "spoke to me", and who'd also taught me yoga. MIld, forgiving, self-mortification-free gym yoga. But nothing like the way she taught pilates. She is not teaching pilates anymore--none that I know about. After (in my estimation) "going Hollywood" on me, she probably has thrown over teaching pilates for teaching yoga. (?!) About a year or so ago, I met up with her. She recommended I go to Spencer's studio. I questioned her recommendation (after all, I had some kind of home practice, while not being pilates proper, that touched on about 3 of the 5 principles). Whereupon she told me I'd be doing myself a favor (though not in so many words)--that such teachings would be to my benefit. Although this is not my first visit to this studio environment (there had been an open house party), I find the environs unchanged in years: gorgeous, sun-lit, Eastern exposure, tranquil. Well, of course, incense-free (my lungs, natch). The classes are challenging and the two teachers I have had--Ilana and Sam--motivate without trying to whip you into a frenzy or single you out (so not-needed). The day after class, my core isn't quite at that hurts-when-I-laugh-or-sneeze level of soreness, but I'm sure I'll effectively work up to that more advanced level again soon. Truth: I come to this studio, as I had come to yoga classes at one point in my recent life, with overuse injuries and from a stressed place ... and truly leave happier than when I entered class, possibly for the first time in a long time. Not knowing what to expect, however; I took a trial class package through Yelp, and took as many classes as my tight schedule would allow in a month, and promptly signed up for more. (So unlike my approach ... the time frame in which I did these things speaks for itself.) Don't walk--Run to this place! P.S. Spencer and all the teachers are super-friendly and know their stuff on alignment. The studio is very clean and sunny. The prices are great compared to Manhattan and you get a ton of attention with about six students a class. In my one month there, Masako, Yael, and Jen were the best for me because they gave challenging variations. The downside was I wanted more of a workout whereas the pace was generally more about rehabilitation even in the advanced classes. It would be good to have a Pilates for Athletes class. read more

They are very focused on form and pay close attention to each student. I have done pilates at other studios for rehabilitation of a lower back injury and am very particular about how I'm taught because of this.
