I have been severely missing my hipster coffee shop hangout since I started living in BG. But no more! I have found my sanctuary. And they serve beer! I have only been to Spencer's twice, and both times I have been impressed. They are no more expensive than Starbucks, but their quality is so much better! They have non dairy milks available for drinks, as well. I have not yet asked to see if any of their food is vegan or if it can be veganized. I'll have to inquire the next time I'm there. Spencer's beer selection is small, but it is quality. This is definitely my new favorite place in BG! read more

Tried a couple of times because I had heard good things. They were ok. Isn't always a convenient enter/exit and one time the drive thru was so backed up someone that had parked couldn't leave for a considerable amount of time. Tend to be slower with getting through the drive thru. I haven't gone inside so couldn't comment on that. Experienced a rude employee so I won't be back. read more

Great food every time I've tried it! The coffee here is great, I've also bought bags and they've ground the beans for me and it was very fresh and had a wonderful flavor. Their seasonal drinks are usually very nice as well :) I just tried the mistletoe kiss which is similar to a mocha and made with peppermint, dark chocolate, espresso, and also has whipped cream and peppermint bark pieces. Spencers coffee is a legend on the Square of Bowling Green Kentucky, and serves largely a group of mostly students from western Kentucky university using their free Wi-Fi but I find their mixed coffees are excellent and the food is also usually delicious. The atmosphere is a little bit loud but, you're surrounded by students with flipped up laptops, enjoying a good latte, or in my case an Indian spiced tea latte. The atmosphere is warm, and the outside tables offer an excellent view of the historic Square of Bowling Green. read more

Spencer's is a locally owned and run coffee shop in downtown Bowling Green, KY. I love the richness of their coffee, and specialty drinks like the Chai Latte and the seasonal Lavender Latte. Their chocolate chip cookies are so scrumptious I could not put it down to take a proper picture. They also serve sandwiches. The atmosphere is casual with the College Campus vibe. They also sell their coffee beans to enjoy at home. This is a must place to go in BG for the best cup of coffee. The only blemish in my book is that the lowest fat content milk they sell is 2%, although they have almond and soy milk options. read more

I had some time to kill before shooting an event next door and walked around the quaint small town of Bowling Green, Kentucky. I was starving, and had no idea where to eat that wasn't 10 minutes outside of the square and not in a strip mall. I parked in front of a Subway keeping it as a last ditch option if I didn't find the inevitable college town cafe somewhere. After a 10 minute jaunt I ended up back at my car, standing in front of subway saddened, I peered around one last time, only to see the "inevitable college town cafe" right across the street. duh! To my delight it had an array of fair trade coffees, free wifi, and a vegetarian sandwich. Hooray!! The sandwich needed some help, and the iced coffee a bit watered down..but hey- I didn't mind, it's always nice to visit the local coffee house in a town...and I throughly enjoyed the indie rock satellite radio as I took in the atmosphere. read more

Spent a month in Bowling Green this past winter. If it weren't for the saving graces of Spencer's, I might have committed seppuku. No offense to the rest of Bowling Green. It's maybe not as 'odd' a crowd as you'd get in Portland or Seattle, but it's definitely not Kentucky once you step inside. The espresso-based drinks (this coming from a NW coffee snob) are quite good, though a tad overpriced, with large latte-type concoctions topping out at $5ish. Same could be said for the food items. But hey, it's really the only game in town, minus the evil empire's couple locations on the outskirts of town. Staff is super-nice and welcoming. I made a comment a few weeks into my stay that "I know about seven people in this town and six of them work at Spencer's." Sure enough, shortly thereafter we ran into one of the baristas out on the town, who was just as friendly outside of work as she was when behind the counter. Good on ya! read more

What is not to love about Spencer's? I have been a fan of this coffee shop since my early college days and like fine wine, Spencer's keeps getting better with age. I typically get a black drip coffee which is one of the best coffees I've ever had. My second fave is an iced americano which is a perfectly smooth and nutty flavor, not super bitter like some espresso. Aside from the delicious coffee and drinks their food is really excellent and unique, my personal favorite is the Sicilian with an egg added or a waffle on Wednesdays. Above all else, I appreciate the baristas and staff, they are always friendly when asked questions about new items or when asked for new drink/food suggestions. I choose to bring my business downtown and get the coveted coffee shop experience that isn't offered at chain/drive thru coffee establishments. Out of the coffee houses in Bowling Green, KY, Spencer's is easily the best. For an independent, locally owned coffee shop, it has done very well in developing its presentation and its offerings. Whether you are the type to grab a cup of Joe and go, or sip on a nicely crafted latte while surfing through Pinterest and Tumblr, Spencer's has you covered. In terms of appearance, the place benefits from a nice mix of exposed brick and alternating walls painted in dark brown and burnt orange. It makes use of the qualities of a building that is a part of the historic downtown area and brings them up to date with small, modern touches. I have only tried a handful of drinks, but so far I have liked them all. The brewed coffees are rich and bold. The espresso-based drinks are good and the presentation is often impressive (latte art). The chai latte is good too. I appreciate that Spencer's offers milk substitutes including soy milk and almond milk. That's very thoughtful. Spencer's also serves individually brewed coffees (pour overs), which are very popular in other parts of the U.S., but still haven't quite caught on here. As for food, Spencer's offers soups, sandwiches (cold and hot), baked goods, and some breakfast items. Small kitchen, but great, fresh food. I enjoyed the reuben sandwich. In all, Spencer's is a well-rounded shop. It's accommodating to its customer base (from older working professionals to college students), providing a great balance of food and drinks in a welcoming environment. I think it's evident the great effort the owner and employees have put into this coffee shop. Rating: 4-4.5 out of 5. Compared to my favorite coffee shops in California and Nashville, TN, I would probably give Spencer's a firm 4 stars, though. read more

Love the coffee here and I go out of my way whenever I go to Bowling Green to stop in. I made a big mistake the other day though. I stopped in for lunch with my wife. I've never had an issue with the staff here but had a bad feeling when there were three kids behind the counter and they all ignored us as we stood at the register hoping to order. Not sure what that was about but it was at that point we should have left. The mysterious spell was finally broken when another customer walked up, got in front of us and ordered coffee. Now that our cloaks of invisibility had been compromised we each ordered a California sandwich, sodas, chips for the wife, and pasta salad for me. With tip which I included purely out of habit, the total was over $18. For that kind of money I was expecting a pretty good sandwich. Holy smokes was I mistaken. How can a place that seems to take such care in serving high quality coffee drinks serve sandwiches like what we were handed? Literally, thick, dry, white bread, bland turkey, super thin avacado slices and a smudge of mustard. I'm not joking when I say I've had better shrink wrap sandwiches out of a gas station cooler. We were SHOCKED to say the least. The pasta salad is worth mentioning because it was as bland as bland gets. Spiral noodles, a few (and I do mean a very few) sliced olives and pepperoni or salami nuggets. However, someone forgot the oil dressing that is normally found in pasta salads. If you like the taste of cold unseasoned noodles stop by and get a bucket of this. There has got to be quite a bit of this stuff in the fridge as I can't imagine many folks ask for it more than once. Chips were good as long as you like Lays. Can't complain about those at least. We ate a bit of the sandwiches, threw the better part of them out in disappointment, and headed across the square to ordered lunch at a different restaurant. I'm not going to name it here but I will say food was outstanding, the service was fine (they cared) and we left very satisfied. I am still shocked at how bad the service was at Spencer's and how bland that sandwich and salad was. I'm from Glasgow and since I discovered this place a few years ago it has always been the highlight of my infrequent trips to Bowling Green. I'll still stop in every time I can for an iced latte but there are just way too many places in town that actually want to serve someone a lunch they'd come back for. Cool old building in Downtown Square. It's worth going in just to check out the building. Stopped in for a late lunch, yes they are more that just coffee. Had the Country Club sandwich with a side of Pasta Salad. The food was fantastic and it was a big sandwich, but not too big. I'd stop in again given the chance. Several people were on their computers, so it must be a student hangout as as well, since the college is close by. I can not speak of the coffee's, as I didn't have any, but it sure smelled nice. I was headed over to Bowling Green Cigar & Pipe (with a full bar) after I ate, so just had water with my meal. read more

It isn't often we get a nice local place in Bowling Green that stays for longer than half a year. Things move in and out of BG all the time and it is the land of unrelenting chain restaurants. Luckily, Spencer's has stayed and been consistent. Product wise-I have had food, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate from Spencer's and they have all been great. (Grilled cheese was super cheesy and delicious and my favorite coffee is a latte with caramel added). Don't forget to order your coffee in ceramic if you're staying to drink for a discount (woo!). Plus, opportunities for cute photos of your drink in the awesomely cozy atmosphere abound when in a ceramic mug. They now also sell PopWorks popsicles. Service wise- this place has never let me down. I often sit and read for a long time and never felt pressured to leave or keep ordering stuff. I've came with friends and alone and always get great service. Atmosphere and location- perfect, in my opinion. Large enough you don't usually struggle to find a place to sit or a table with an outlet. Right off of the beautiful downtown square. I love to visit coffeehouses outside of my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, partly because I've been to all the Nashville coffee houses; partly because I find that smaller towns coffee houses are usually pretty good. Sure, there are crappy coffee shops outside of town as there are in the city. Nonetheless, most smaller cities' coffee shops realize they'll go out of business quickly if the limited market stop showing up. I chose Spencer's as it had a great reputation on Yelp, and I was not disappointed. The place has a lot going for it. It has good coffee, a small but intimate atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and reasonably quick service. I thought it was odd when I went to the bathroom, and the staff had disappeared, especially since there was a back door no one as watching, but that's only a small argument. I know that there are other coffee shops in Bowling Green, but this is a good one, and definitely worth a visit if you're in town. Especially since there's nothing else to do outside of the Corvette museum and amusement park. Nice job. read more
