I had to take my 91 year old father in law for an eye exam there at Spex. It was a very good experience. He is wheelchair bound and all necessary accommodations were made for him. The staff was awesome and provided for a stress free visit. He was able to reuse his existing frames which helped keep the cost down. read more

We used our FSA money, got some fabulous frames with a LOT of patience and advice from the staff, and liked the tech and doctors. I spent $948.00 on a pair of bifocals that can only be worn when I'm on the computer. Then I was asked if I wanted to spend another $200. for a 'magnet clip-on' sunglasses...? really? you just told me that the distance is only for sitting at the computer. Like most 40 (plus) year old, I was telling myself my eyes are fine. Holding newspaper further away was normal. But after driving one night, after a rain, I knew I had a good chance of not seeing a walker or jogger in our neighborhood. I called Dr. Frank and he got me in right away. Not only did he tell me I needed glasses but he found an infection too (he prescribed some medicine for my eye). About a week later (the infection was cured) I went back in for my glasses. WOW! what a huge difference that new glasses make, I couldn't believe I let my vision go for so long. That night when I was driving home, I was sitting at a stop light and I could read the temperature, on the rear view mirror, of the vehicle ahead of me. How's that for great vision! read more

Polite Professional Staff. Respectful, and Professional Doctors. I used to go to the Pearle vision down the street from these guys but never again. 48 hours after I made my eye exam with Pearle, they decided they were no longer accepting my Humana Vision Care coverage and didn't bother to let me know till I showed up for my appointment. Anyway I stopped by Spex Express, after Pearle let me down and I couldn't have been happier. The staff, and the Dr. Frank did a great job in explaining the various exam techniques and the results of them and has a EXCELLENT select of frames. Spex Expressions - Optometrists Near Me - DeKalb, Illinois

I'm not sure if these guys are dishonest or just bad at their job. I suspect I know which. My story: at my last appointment they told me I need progressive lenses, which are kinda like bifocals and way more expensive than my usual lenses. At 38 I was a bit young to need these but I'm a computer programmer so maybe looking at screens all day messed up my vision. Once I had them I started to suspect they misdiagnosed me because I could only see clearly out of one part of the lens, no matter if I was looking far away or close. Later my 8 year old goes in and they tell us she needs progressive lenses too! Ok...now something is fishy. She never complained about not being able to see and she doesn't even wear glasses. So I take her someplace else for a second opinion: 20/20 vision. I get examined myself: don't need progressives. I ask if maybe that's a matter of opinion and I could go either way? Nope...not a matter of opinion...definitely don't need progressive lenses. She proved it by having me read far away and close up with the same prescription. Oh, and my son asked about getting contacts and they told us he needs some kind of expensive contact. I haven't had him reexamined yet but I think I know how that will go. Plus they are way more expensive than where I go now for lenses and frames and they do like to try and up sell you. Also my new doctor has said other patients have complained about Spex too. Bottom line: avoid this place. read more

Dr. Marczewski was very friendly and explained everything in great detail. When I went to pick out my glasses the optician Brittany helped me pick out the perfect pair. I happened across this place on the Internet and am so happy that I did! Staff was AMAZING! Everyone was really great and made my daughter and I feel very welcome. It is definitely a family friendly place to be. Also, they had all new, high-tech medical equipment that took very accurate assessments of my eyes. The man who ran the machines/did the pre-screening (Nate) was super sweet, very helpful, and (not that it matters) not at all bad on the eyes. Doctor Frank is the doctor I saw and I didn't quite care for the way he did things though he was professional and nice enough. read more

Recently visited this establishment while in the market for new glasses. The initial set up / eye tests performed by his staff blew me away! They use modern technology, which my previous eye place, did not! The equipment was state of the art, the employees were wonderful to work with and explained what each test was going to accomplish & look like to me before beginning. After all the pre-test I met with Dr. Frank and he took the time and went over all the results, did a thorough eye exam. He the walked me through the options of what options I might need (transitions, etc..) Finally, Burgundy (if I remember the young lady's name) helped me pick out a great pair of frames & helped me order my newest set of glasses. I would highly recommend this establishment if you are in the market for new glasses or contacts. GREAT EXPERIENCE!! read more

Edit/Update: NEVER GO HERE! I was refunded the cost of my 1st pair of defective glasses once they were returned to the office. I was given a 2nd pair of bifocals with the same frame as before, however the Rx was the same - still wrong. I was not offered a new exam on my eyes because the lenses were too strong, I was told I had to hold a tape measure to my eye and measure how close/far I sit from everything as I go through my day so the lenses can be corrected. I will not even put here the thought that went through my head! What responsible, competent, doctor does this??? I can tell you - NONE. So, with the backing of my insurance, I returned defective glasses #2. "Free" glasses my granny's backside! They were both WRONG and they were both returned. You have them. 100 pairs of free glasses are useless and nothing to brag about if the Rx is WRONG. Don't be so arrogant to think that a mistake might have been made, a 2nd eye exam would have fixed the problem. After a month and countless visits to this office, I'm done and will never return. just pray nothing goes wrong with the glasses my two sons have because I'm pretty sure at this point the warranty won't be honored. Office staff was polite and exam was comprehensive, although they were very pushy on tests that aren't covered on the insurance. When it came time to pick out my glasses, I stated repeatedly I was on a budget and ignored. They told me I had to get the progressive lenses because otherwise I was doing horrid damage to my eyes. I have since learned progressive lenses are a CHOICE, never a requirement for anyone. I stated many times I didn't want them because I knew they would be difficult to adjust to using and my eyes are sensitive to drastic change. Long story short, I got bullied into the progressive lenses. There was an incident when I called in to see if my glasses were in and I was treated very rudely. I tried to cancel the order and was told, "no". When the glasses came in, the lenses prescription was wrong. I could only see through a small area in the center of the glasses and it was warped-looking. If I moved my head side to side (as everyone does when they read), everything became distorted, out of focus, and I felt like I would be sick. I got an instant headache when putting them on. I've had two visits to their office since then and they refuse to change the lenses. I've been told by several members of the staff (including the doctor) that I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm not REALLY having these problems. I've left their office in tears twice. I've even had my insurance company step in on my behalf. Still nothing. I'm out over $600 and still don't have usable glasses. RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN! And hold on tight to your money because they will grab as much of it as they can - they don't care about you as long as they get their money. read more

Really have been happy with my experiences with Dr Frank and Brittany at Spex expressions. I really love my high definition lenses from Zeiss that the doctor prescribed for me. Brittany helped me pick out the perfect frames and was really fun to work with. The office is really clean and has the latest equipment for eye exams. All my questions are answered and my different insurance coverages explained. I recommend Spex Expressions and will not hesitate going back for all my eyewear needs. read more

I an thoroughly disappointed with my care at Spex expressions, Sycamore, Il. My first apt. was in Oct. with Dr. Loydall and received a prescription for new lens and the progress notes which I later requested states that Latanoprost drops were ordered for me. I have never been given a prescription for this nor even had the medication discussed with me. The precription was in error and I could not see with these lens. Progress notes state that I am not on computer/device often. This is erroneus as I spend much time on the computer researching. She insisted I needed Blue protect lens because of this which added approx. $126 dollars to the cost. By the way they have not changed the symptoms I complained about at that visit. Wasted money! To make a very long story short, after many visits to the office, I was retested and given a new prescription on 10/12/2018. Finally, I can see, but I always have a smudge in the middle of each lens from I assume my eyelashes. This requires cleaning every 15-30 min. So then told I would need to choose different frames because the frames I chose were the problem. So, I was helped to pick our a different frame which should not give me smudge problems. Well, guess what? Same problem. The new frames were almost identical to the ones I had been wearing for 3 years. I really had wanted a different look. Same problem with smudging, but no one cared after that. So, I recently requested a copy of my latest prescription which by the way, was far different from the original one in Oct. 2018.I also requested a copy of all my testing and progress notes because I need to get a different pair of glasses so I don't continually need to clean them and I also need new prescription sunglasses. So, after spending $555 at Spex expressions which is only for the frames and lens, not the testing, I need to spend more money to get glasses minus the smudging somewhere else!! From Oct 2018 to Mar 2019, I still have glasses that are not satisfactory!! I have worn prescription lens for 65 years and have never had a similar problem. When reviewing the progress notes from the optometrists, I found many errors in charting by the optometrists involved. They also state all of the many educational handouts that were given to me. I was not given any. I sincerely hope they "clean up their act", so that no one else needs to spend unnecessary amounts of money. read more

As far as the staff is concerned, they go above and beyond. I went with the intention of getting a new pair of glasses while already having the prescription so I didn't deal so much with the doctor. They were very friendly and welcoming as well as knowledgeable about my insurance and what it would cover. I worked mostly with Brittany and she did an excellent job of making sure I was happy with the frames I was getting. So much so that when there wasn't much in terms of what interested me and would be covered by my plan, she ordered several pairs for me to pick from. Not only that but after I was dissatisfied with the blue light coating I got on my lenses originally they replaced them with standard anti reflective coating free of charge. At this point I'm very satisfied with the help they gave and all the staff there deserve praise for not only being knowledgeable about eye ware but also caring about keeping you happy. read more

Update on previous rating: The support staff continues to be beyond wonderful. The timeframe in which I'm able to get an appointment is great and I never have to wait long for my contacts. I now see Dr. Marczewski and she also is fantastic. She takes her time to really listen to what you want and I always leave satisfied. Spex is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for and sometimes there are hidden discounts that they find for you. I will never go anywhere else. read more

5 stars isn't enough for Spex express! I have a condition called recurrent corneal erosion and it is a pretty severe case. When my left eye kept tearing and I was in severe pain dr frank and dr m always fit me into their schedule the same day. When I need to see a surgeon for the condition dr frank made all necessary phone calls in a Sunday morning and got me an appointment that day! Well my right eye began to tear as well and was also in need of a membrane transplant. Again dr frank and dr m made sure this happened as soon as possible! After my right transplant didn't take dr frank had me in his office and again called the surgeon to see if they could get me in that day...well I am a mom of 3 and my husband just started a new job in Rockford and was unable to leave work to drive me to the appointment (with this transplant it is severe pain and one cannot see). Staff knows how intense my eye pain is and even take my kids and play with them as I'm getting the care I need. Dr frank has an employee by the name of Jamie who volunteered to drive me into Naperville and get the procedure done! Without hesitation Dr Frank told her this was fine and away we went. She stayed with me the entire time I was having the procedure and even dropped off my prescription to the pharmacy before bringing me back home. There is no words for how amazing everyone at Spex expressions are. From the receptionists, to the eye staff and ESP dr frank and dr m! There is no place I will ever go and trust more! The care one receives there is amazing and I recommend them to eVERYONE! read more

I went into the Sycamore location, and got my eyes checked. It seemed everything was OK. However there prices were astronomically higher then most of the competitors around the area. Nevertheless I ordered my contacts, and still haven't received them. It has now been over a month since they were ordered. I'm not happy about this at all. I have no problem paying a higher price for good service. However the service has been no better than that of Wal-Mart. I wouldn't recommend going here. read more
