Ugh. Everything drenched in butter sauce -- which isn't even Indian. The Naan is great, as are the tandoori dishes, but almost everything else comes with a version of butter sauce. Coconut Prawns? Butter sauce with coconut in it. Aloo Gobi? Butter sauce. On it goes. The food is decidedly not authentic Indian. The last two times I've been there the service was horribly slow. Perfect place for a stopover dinner in Campbell River. Large, spacious and clean. Portions were huge and flavourful - and service was really friendly. Mango chicken curry taste like boiled chicken breast thrown into watery tomato soup, two samosas over fried and for the price of $5.95 such a rip off, with no condiments or anything. I don't recommend this restaurant chain. It sucks ass. I went there after seeing the reviews but i guess all these reviews are fake just like the food they're making. You can get better spice blends at Walmart and make yourself good curry with meat or vegetables for the fraction of the price and flavours. No utensils or even a napkin inside the takeout bag. The Indian girl who works at the front desk is rude These restaurants get away with it cause they don't have a competitor here, that's why they removed my review from the google, so reposting here. Delicious authentic East Indian food. Depending on your palette add heat accordingly. I ordered medium heat and found it to be mild. Will definitely go for hot next time, now knowing what to expect. The kitchen makes your spice level to order, so you can decide how hot or mild you want each dish to be. Will be back for sure. Friendly staff, nice decor. To start with, the food wasn't bad. Maybe 3 1/2 stars. But watch out. My group ordered 4 dishes. They made a mistake with one of the orders and brought the wrong meat. When we pointed it out they initially denied the mistake. Eventually the server admitted the wrong meat had been delivered (they had insisted that chicken was lamb). I then asked what they were going to do with the wasted dish. The answer was, they were going to throw it out. I asked if we could keep it but the manager/owner refused. They would prefer to throw it out. Unless we wanted to pay for it!!! Such a sad example of greed and waste. It was their mistake and they felt better to throw food out than let a customer have it. So...clearly they don't care about their customers. It actually left me wondering if they were going to re-sell it! Then, at the end of the meal they brought the credit card machine but not the detailed bill. We asked for the actual bill and when they brought it the extra dish (the one they threw out!!!) was on our bill! When they saw us studying the bill they suddenly 'realized' that the extra meal was on the bill and brought us a corrected bill!!! I'm not saying this was all on purpose, but I've never had a restaurant give me the credit card machine without first giving me the bill. So...don't trust them. Very pleasantly surprised, tandoori prawns gets 100% , garlic naan gets 100% , service by Shelly 100%, she was fantastic even when I asked for a glass of wine out of a fresh bottle. Butter chicken I give a 90%. Quantities are very generous, and medium IS spicy (and I like spice). So overall this Indian restaurant is a real find. Just paid about $100 for takeout after our drive from Victoria to Quadra. Absolutely the worst Indian food I have tasted on this island. It seems they must have a new chef as I remember the last time we were in Campbell River in Oct it was pretty good. This time the dishes were too salty and the spices were lost in the heavy use of salt. This chef working on Sat afternoon should be fired for totally lack of any basic skills in preparing Indian food. read more

We tried Spice Hut on a recommendation from our hotel, and were looking forward to it. When we stopped in for lunch, we were the only people in the place, and we had it to ourselves for the duration of our meal. The service was lacklustre and inattentive, and no sooner had we finished eating than the server was there with the bill and credit card machine waiting for us to pay. The food was not bad and reasonably priced, but I felt that the Chicken Masala was not something I couldn't have done at home with a few chunks of chicken and a jar of sauce. My wife ordered the Fish Pakoras, which had decent flavour. Overall, the experience was on the low end of average, and we wouldn't be in a hurry to revisit. read more

Like a hug from an old friend, Spice Hut's offerings are familiar and warm. This is one of my go-to places to eat. Our most recent visit to Spice Hut was on Thursday. Whiskey and I, preparing to go see some live music downtown Campbell River, stopped in for a dinner. Spice Hut is a small franchise Indian restaurant, with three locations on Vancouver Island and six in total across western Canada. And while I'm not familiar with the other locations, the one here is quite consistent with the food. The only variance is the spice level, which seems to change on a whim depending on the mood of the cooks that day. Sometimes I will order a dish with a medium level and I sweat and struggle to get through the meal (I have no aversion to hot food, I often go out of my way to indulge in it, in fact) while other times it has just a trace of warmth. The flavours are always bang on, however. Seasoned perfectly, (which is good because you wont find salt or any other seasonings to adjust your food on the table) this Indian food is rich and flavourful. It's not exactly what I would would call Indian home cooking, but it's not some kind of western fusion either, it's somewhere in between, Indian cuisine for western palettes, with generous use of cream, garlic and somewhat surprisingly beef. Portions at Spice Hut are large. Often I will order a dish, then add basmati rice and/or naan bread. This tends to, more often than not, end up with me taking half home with me for a midnight snack or lunch the next day. A curious quirk about this place: When you ask to take your unfinished food home with you, they don't wrap it up or container it for you, the simply drop some styrofoam takeout containers on your table and expect you to pack it up by yourself. This isn't exactly what I would call warm facilitation, and I found it a bit jarring the first couple times, but its a nuance of the place I've become used to and have come to accept. We started with chicken pakora, as we almost always do, to set our appetites as we waited for our main course. The tender uneven sized pieces of chicken coated in chickpea flour and dusted with spices were good, as the always are. Not mind-blowing or anything, but good. They serve this with an amazing green sauce (mint chutney?) of which we ordered an extra portion for good measure. On this most recent visit I ordered the Daal Makhni, a vegetarian dish of kidney beans and lentils with a rich mix of butter, cream and tomato sauce spiked with garlic, ginger, and Indian spices. I selected a mild-medium, this dish has a heat at the front of the mouth and on the lips, unlike some of the building heats of an Indian curry dish, and sometimes ordering a medium requires me to consume it a bit slower than my rumbling stomach wanted on this occasion. I mentioned the variance in heat earlier, on this particular occasion the mild-medium Daal Makhni had almost no heat whatsoever. I wasn't disappointed, as the flavours hold up on their own, but I would have preferred just a touch more warmth. Added on to this I ordered a portion of naan bread. I love this. Crispy in just the right amount, served hot, it's the perfect blend of chewy and tender with a fantastic taste of fire. Plating at Spice Hut is spartan is say the least with almost no garnish or flourishes, bordering on cafeteria cheesy. Naan comes in plastic baskets like you would find in a oceanside fish and chip joint, and the stoneware is stark white. This doesn't bother me in the least however, sometimes letting the food speak for itself is the way to go. The ambiance of the dining room is nice enough, clean with accents of Indian art scattered throughout. One small thing, that always draws my eye in a negative way are the menus. Single fold orange and red, they are laminated and often dirty with greasy finger smears. The drink menu is smattered with advertising product logos reminiscent of a race car at Daytona. Our server was great (Laura?). She recognized us right away (we haunt this place often) and greeted us with the right balance of banter and professionalism, being attentive to our needs at the right moments without hovering over our table and leaving us be to our privacy when we obviously enraptured in conversation. I really can't find any fault with this particular waiter's service on this or any other occasion we have been lucky enough to get a table in her section. I can't say the same the same for all the servers there. Not that the service has ever been terrible, by any means, but not quite up to the telepathy and promptness of this one. Although there are a few gaps in the overall experience, I keep coming back to Spice Hut for the consistently good food. Comfort food. It's not somewhere I'd take someone to impress, but it's somewhere I would have no problem pulling up a seat alone or with good friends to enjoy some warming, overall good Indian grub. Worst experience ever in a restaurant. Very unwelcoming atmosphere , waiter didn't come to take order for 30 mins since we arrived stating shift change. Did get the naan I ordered and even after I reminded twice. Still being charged for what I did not get. Very very bad customer service. Reasonably legit Indian food for the middle of nowhere! I've been to India so I have pretty high standards. Their spice scale is serious. We enjoyed butter chicken and kadai paneer. They brought our food very quickly since we were in a hurry to get back on the road. We ordered "hot" and it was almost too spicy... but mostly just delicious! read more

Let me begin by stating that I have spent my life travelling the world reviewing restaurants. I keep to myself, and do not use my real name ever. I have eaten cuisines from all over the world, and have sat at many east Indian tables to delight in their unique flare. The Spice Hut is truly authentic Indian food. The food I ate here reminded my of my good friends wife's cooking back in India. I have eaten at them all, from Alberta to Campbell River, my last experience was Comox. I do not review only the food, I review the entire experience. Let me tell you this, of the thousands of restaurants I have eaten at nothing compares to the 2 ladies I witnessed myself. The only sad moment of my dinner was when the Dynamic Duo was shushed by an East Indian, I am assuming the manager as he had that pretentious feel managers have. They dressed similar, one in turquoise (Jess) the other in purple (Shale). I have never seen 2 servers so in love with their job as these 2. I was lucky enough to be served by one, and my friend by the other; yes we sit separate tables to give an accurate review. These ladies were a continuous smile, floating around in a world of their own. They laughed, and laughed a lot. They teased, they genuinely loved their job. I am used to watching servers buckle under pressure, but I quizzed my server (Jess) hard, on almost every dish, and she answered without a pause, and accurate I might add. She even accurately described a Karahi, and compared it to a Wok so I would understand what she was saying. I could go on about my experience, but who reads these right? To the owner: You have found yourself a pair of Gems, in an industry starved of them. Hold on and hold on tight, these ladies are your ticket.
