4 lamb chip plate with cucumber/tomato salad and chickpeas
    Gale K.

I ordered a kind of stew with lamb and spinach. The flavor was superb but the lamb could have simmered a bit longer. The flavor was enhanced by the meat being cooked on the bone and some of the bones were split which enabled the marrow to enrich the flavor even more. The portion was more than ample and I shall enjoy another meal as a result. I will simmer the meat longer to complete tenderizing it. I first encountered Afghan cuisine some 20 years ago when I was privileged to work with resettling Afghani people in St Louis, MO. I have eaten at many Afghan restaurants since then and have enjoyed the food very much. However, of all the restaurants and homes that I've eaten in, I have found that I do not enjoy the sauces offers here. There is no true "white" sauce that I've eaten elsewhere and all of the sauces are watery instead of thick. Perhaps it is a regional preference. Also, I wish they would consider adding a half naan/half rice option to the place instead of rice OR naan. The rice, by the way is absolutely DELICIOUS I also enjoy the complimentary green or milk tea but would appreciate a cooler of water to be dispensed in the same area. I enjoy both the food ambience in this casual spot. I will continue to return, as I work my way through their menu.

This place is definitely a hole in the wall. It's operated as a mom and pop shop! Service and food were okay. The portion for the naan bread was huge, definitely perfect for sharing!

Amazing restaurant! The service was outstanding from start to finish, and everyone made us feel welcome. The food was fresh, flavorful, and truly wholesome. The fresh tandoori naan was absolutely delicious--hot, soft, and the perfect complement to every dish. You can really tell they care about quality. Highly recommend this place, and we'll definitely be coming back!

Overall experience 3.5 NEW OWNERSHIP & MENU The waitresses are pleasant and the interior has been completely renovated. It's more formal and you cannot look into the kitchen. It has a very different vibe - not a homey feeling. The old menu was more diverse & interesting IMO. My lamb chops were tasty but dry. The kebabs that my table mates ordered were not dry & enjoyable. We still managed to order a few appetizers that we have not ordered before - a different type of dumpling stuffed with leeks and a bread soaked in a yogurt spice mixture. Both appetizers were good. The menu can be found on Google.

We moved to the neighborhood and have been looking forward to trying this Afghani eatery. This modern looking "hole-in-the-wall" serves amazingly delicious food! The meat (halal) was perfectly cooked. Service was a little slow but not a deal breaker. Complementary all-you-can-drink chai tea was a nice touch. We will definitely be back to try other dishes.

Great service! The customer service was very kind, professional, and helpful. Highly recommended."

Specially the bread was great as well.

Another thing that struck me was 100% Health Score. I found that very impressive. The space inside is HUGE and divided between a dining area and a grocery/home goods shop. At the counter area sat a young girl (daughter of owners). I looked at the menu and knew i wanted to try the whole chicken Sajji, a large salad and rice. After talking with the cook through her daughter translating, I ordered the Qabeli Pulay without the lamb shank. I was told that the chicken would take about 40 minutes to prepare. I had no problem with waiting. OH BOY! I am SO glad that I waited and ordered what I did. The food arrived in 2 large aluminum pans AND a large container of rice. One pan had the chicken and the other held the salad. The amount of food was enough to EASILY feed 2-3 adults and 4-5 kids. All this FRESHLY made, cooked to order, NATURAL food for $49! THE TASTE: impeccable flavor on EVERYTHING! The chicken was juicy, tender and so flavorful. There was also a sauce for the chicken. It added even more flavor. Sooo good! Licking my fingers! I love Qabeli Pulau! It is usually cooked with lamb shank however, I just wanted the rice without the lamb. The Chef was able to accommodate my request. This is the BEST, most flavorful Qabeli I have ever had. It did not need so much as a grain of salt - perfectly seasoned. Please try this dish with or without meat (she will replace the lamb with chicken, if you like). I asked for a larger salad. For $5.99, I was given a large aluminum pan of the freshest, crispiest and most wholesome salad: red cabbage, romaine, onions, Persian cucumber. It was delicious and a bargain. In my opinion, this place deserves to be successful. I wish I had the power to bring in the likes of a Chef Ramsay to do a makeover without touching the food. The outside is not appealing and I think most people don't try it simply because of that. Do yourself a favor. Go. Try this delicious food. Bring someone with you and let's give this place the credit it deserves. I've lived in other parts of the country and am not happy with the quality and diversity of food here in Sacramento. THIS restaurant is a GEM when it comes to taste, quality of food, price, and service. Do yourself a favor and just GO and bring someone with you!

It was slow tonight when I came in so the service was prompt and the man behind the counter was very friendly and asked several questions I had about the menu and about halal food in general. He taught me a few new things about middle eastern food and he was very helpful in that regard. I ordered the gyro plate and at the last minute decided to just eat in rather than take-out. So, I had a seat and the man at the counter brought out a very delicious chicken and corn chowder which was an unexpected surprise and I really enjoyed it greatly. Then, as I finished the soup, he brought out the gyro plate which was stacked generously with rice, meat, sauce with lettuce, tomato and onions. The meat was delicious, the Greek tzatziki cucumber sauce was very good also. Overall, for a very reasonable cost of about $15 I had a very satisfying meal that I struggled to even finish. Very good value. I will return with the family and I can recommend Darya to anyone looking for a meal! I did notice some very negative reviews, and I suspect that this could be related to cultural misunderstandings perhaps? English is clearly not the first language for the people running this restaurant so I think it's important to understand that perhaps it's a good policy to level expectations to that fact.

How many Afghani restaurants or grocery stores do we need? They can survive making $100 a year and write off taxes. We no longer have Mediterranean food meaning food from the Mediterranean like Lebanese or Syrian or Jordanian food, it all has been taken over by afghanis and they pretend to cook Mediterranean food when it's not. Afghani food is primarily meat and rice and they wouldn't know a vegetable to save their lives when Mediterranean food is primarily vegetables balanced with some meat. Stay away from this rotten place and be cautious about other Afghani stores as well, it's pretty much the same quality and story.

I was looking for my first and main meal of the day and decided to try the new place. The restaurant was more bright and open than I remember as a Chinese restaurant. I liked the open, airy style of the new place. I was the only customer when I arrived at around 1:15 on a Tuesday - the week before Christmas. It seems that one orders from the order desk from one of 2 photocopied menus, pay, seat one's self and food will be prepared and delivered. There were no wall menus or table menus - just the two at the front desk. There seemed to be a nice mix of foods available from different culinary styles: Turkish, Chinese, Afghan, Iranian, etc. I settled on a chicken and rice dish: Palow There was lots of rice and lots of Barberries. In the mound of rice I was able locate a roasted chicken leg. A separate plate included cucumber, lettuce, red cabbage, tomato slices, and red and yellow bell peppers with a chunk of lemon. I was not told how to eat these things or if this was a salad. I squeezed the lemon over the tomato and cucumber, cut up all of the veggies and added them to the rice! It turned out that everything was tasty and delicious. I liked the food and am glad that I did not read the reviews prior to coming because, since I was hungry, I may have thought twice! I might have been able to do with a few less barberries because of the tartness, but adding the chopped veggies seemed to downplay the tartness. The rice was nice and fluffy and combined well with everything else. The chicken was mildly seasoned, juicy, and combined well with the other flavors and textures. I noticed that the platter my entree was served on had a Chinese motif and was probably included with sale of the business. I have no problem with that. However, I do wish water - other than bottled water - could have been offered. I will return at some point to see how they are doing.
