UPDATE! The manager dropped me a note and said that the gizzards are not available from the supplier at this time just yet. That was so impressive for a contact from the manager! Also, after I learned this, I should have waited around for a burger but they were closed at the grill and setting up for lunch. Elizabeth, you are my hero for letting me know that I will not have to starve to death! Original review: Still ok after all these years but no gizzards any more. Have to change my gas stop out in this area. Good place if you don't have your heart set on the great gizzards that they had at one time. The chicken, potatoes and gravy looked so good. It was 10:40 and I was going to get lunch. There was a black curtain over the food with a tip jar on top. The guy behind the counter had something going on not sure if he was disabled or what was going on. After not getting any help and being confused by the curtain over the food I left. GPS showed no other restaurants in the area. So I went back in tried to order food from the guy in the kitchen. He was trying to communicate but there was a barrier of some type. I then interrupted the cashiers conversation seemingly to their annoyance and was told lunch isn't served until 11:00. It's a gas station with food ready to be served and they're telling me nope you have to wait until 11:00. At this point it was a few minutes prior. I'm guessing the gene pool isn't real deep there. read more

I had been over at Opie's getting my brisket on. I overheard the cashier mention to another customer about the "convenience store" across the road. I'd seen it a couple of times driving through Spicewood, so I felt I owed it to my Yelp friends to check out the Spicewood General Store. The Spicewood General Store lives up their billing. You need a shovel? They got it. You need keys made? They can do it. You need cotter pins? Or plumbing supplies? Or just some random groceries (although I have to say the grocery line is thin). They have it all. For those of you around Austin longer than to wet your pants, if you take an old Gibson's store, minus the electronics, clothing, and garden and shrink it into the format of about 3 convenience stores, you have the Spicewood General Store. Alas, I didn't need any turnbuckles or refrigerated 2.5 gallon Ozarka water jugs. I just needed to use the restroom. I bought a couple of drinks and three snacks to thank them for their convenience (because I was raised that way). Apparently, the grill is a happening place, and people place "to go" orders for pickup. The restaurant seems like a place where the locals gather, although you don't get any of the dumb stares you would in most small towns. I guess they're used to "city slickers" stopping in to gawk by now. The lady at the register at the time of my visit was country-friendly and made me feel totally welcome. I so appreciated that she treated me with respect and appreciated my business. About the only down side to the place is that their Exxon-branded gas isn't cheap. At the same time, realize you're in BFE with only one other gas station in the vicinity, and in a touristy area with nearby Krause Springs. They probably don't move a high enough volume each month to get a greater discount. And what exactly are you going to do if you need gas? Walk to Marble Falls or Bee Caves? Just pay the man, Aunt Bea. Just pay the man. Recommended. read more

I have been in a few times and the afternoon crew are very friendly, Both times I have ordered the burger and both times the burger was great. I have been once in the morning (7am) the cashier was friendly but the guy working the café side was not. I haven't been back in the morning, so not sure if it was a fluke or if he is always on the morning crew. The food was fine, I was also disappointed that they advertised a fish and chips special on the door, but it was only for Fridays. read more

Food has stepped up..... Keep it coming! Haven't had the Meat loaf yet (Monday's) but heard it's great. They actually make it there. Continue to make food fresh and in house and people will really love you. Burgers are great. I know the pizza in the past was terrible. Not sure if they still use the same vendor? Wish they had more room. We need a good place for food as everything along 71 from Bee Cave seems over priced and not that great. read more

Place has every damn thing you can think of! Tacos in the morning and burgers during the day, chicken is yummy. Younger staff can be a bit grumpy, but good thing is they don't last long! Live close by and order food to go when I can, gas is expensive. read more

Went in for breakfast at 10:18 a.m. stop serving at 10:30. Asked if they were still serving breakfast and they said yes even though they had a black drape over the serving area like they were about to have a puppet show or something. Ordered 4 omelettes and server says "Are you serious? We're about to close up breakfast." She's all attitude and rude so we said we'll take our business elsewhere. We live 5 minutes away and are here 5 days a week but WON'T be coming back for that. This place needs a personnel remodel. Spicewood is way too awesome for that kind of nonsense. read more

Typical convenience store products and prices. But frequently out of items you expect convenience store to have. Food is good as far as fast food goes. But never have I seen a pleasant cook or assistant on cooking line. Customer service from clerks is inconsistent. Sometimes great but more often inattentive and more focused on gossiping or texting on their phone. Don't stop. Go up to stores on Pace Bend Road or make it to Marble Falls. read more

I had been coming to Spicewood to visit my in laws for about two years before we moved out here last August and I can say I've never had a negative experience here. They are so friendly and don't get upset if I call and ask things like do y'all have celery right now, do you exchange propane tanks, ect. They have the best burgers hands down! I love that you can call in your order and go pick it up. The prices are a little higher but i don't mind paying higher prices instead of driving an extra 25 minutes into bee caves or marble falls. read more

Unfortunately, my mother and I had stopped at this connivence store only to feel unwelcomed being tourists making our way through Texas. We felt as though it was an inconvenience for a family store to have visitors outside of their area. Although the assistant lead manager was very pleasant and able to reimburse us after spending $30 on water shoes that had been dry rotted, we weren't very pleased with the attitude the cooks and other workers displayed. Granted this is a remote area but we were visiting Krause Springs as it attracts locals and travelers. Knowing this was the closest gas station, I would like to give the suggestion to "treat everyone the way you would like to be treated". read more

Spicewood General store is a hub for the locals. During summer times, the place is nearly over run with tourist. Such that, they often times need to rent port-a-paddies to handle to overload of... stuff. They have a full section of products you would see at a convenience store. They also have hardware section that always seems to have that one last part you forgot to get. The kitchen does a very nice job preparing the food. There's even a dinning room to sit and enjoy your order. Or just hang out with friends and drink morning coffee. The only issues I can think of, I pass through shortly after 6AM on my way to work The kitchen never seem to have available all breakfast menu items. And they charge to much for milk. read more

Back when I was courtin my gal, I lived out in Kingsland and drove into Austin a couple of times a week. This place served as a pit stop pretty regularly. Large fountain drink, some fried edibles, a bag of nibbles... I could always find something to help tame the road. Surprisingly tasty for a roadside gas station/store! We stopped in for a quick bite and ordered the BLT/fries combo for lunch. It was very tasty and fresh. The service was great - friendly! They also sell fresh Krispy Kreme donuts so... They're winners in my book!! read more

Secret Burger Paradise. That's the best way I can sum up the grill at this store. In itself it's a pretty cool stop if you're headed for the lake. Prices are a bit high but average with the other stores in a recreation area so you come to expect it no matter where you go. I like how it's still a "old fashioned" store and has a large hardware selection, a couple isles of camping stuff and assorted "lake gear". Friendly employees, don't have any problem getting in and getting out even when it was packed. Now for the meat, literally. This place has flat out amazing burgers. Cooked on the grill, fresh beef that looked hand shaped, good spices and amazing toppings. You end up with a thick, heavy duty burger that's as good or better than what you make on the grill at home. Yes, I said it. If you want a fast food equivalent I'd describe then as the juiciness of Wendy's meets the high quality ingredients and "wide burger" style of Whattaburger. Very cool, old school store. I can't believe I lived out here 3 years before trying the burgers. Seriously! read more

The burgers are pretty good if you're willing to wait that long. Seems the employees are too busy playing around and BSing to be concerned about getting the food out. Just pick the fried chicken and move on---unless you've got lots of time to wait. Employees are nice enough---just seems they are clueless. read more

We just stopped in for breakfast. Bummer. They really need to step up and get some communication between the kitchen and register. We ordered and paid for the two egg breakfast and got two eggs n biscuit. Where's the meat?! Where's the butter n jelly? Where's the smile n thank you? While we were eating a bunch of kids were playing tag and we were apparently home base. Where's the manager? It's one of a few places to stop for breakfast or lunch along that stretch of 71 n I'm sorry we stopped. Two stars for the coffee. read more

Stopped in last month, and was pleasantly surprised that it was much better...not how it was, but getting there. It was early on a weekend morning, there was a short line (unfortunately behind someone who ordered for a crew), but the servers were nice enough. I'm hoping that the next time will be even better. Don't advertise broasted chicken and then try to pass us regular fried chicken because you don't feel like cooking it! No one drives from NW Austin for fried chicken. Won't be back. read more
