We had a reservation at 5pm on a Sunday. There was no one there so we had the place to ourselves. The location is about 40 minutes from downtown. It is serene and peaceful. I had a wine tasting with three different glasses of wine. The chicken empanadas were delicious with their red sauce. We also had the sausage. I had steak with rosemary potatoes. The steak was flavorful, the chimichurri was vibrant, and the portions were large. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. My partner had the carrots, which were also tasty with a slight smoky flavor. We had the dulce de leche cheesecake as well. It was very delicious. Our server was very friendly and helpful. THE BIG: Located in Spicewood, El Gaucho winery specializes in Argentine wine. Very big outdoor space with family friendly play areas for the kids that want to have fun. Indoor seating is also available. Plenty of parking in the lot above the tasting room. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here at 6pm and the winery was about to close up shop. Fortunately the pourer allowed for us to have one tasting and then they were closing up shop. I get it, if it's not busy then no need to keep open. We got the three wine flight which consisted of a malbec, chardonnay and cab sauv. All were delicious wines and we had a great view of the hill country in the back. We had been planning to visit El Gaucho ever since they catered a work event for my company and their authentic Argentinian cuisine blew me away. Yes, it's a drive for most of us but it is worth it times 10. Their restaurant dining area is cozy but when the weather cooperates their spacious outdoor space is a perfect hill country venue to wine and dine. We began our journey with their ceviche. It's advertised as a zesty blend of white fish and shrimp with a pinch of spiced jalapeno. Ceviche with jalapeno? It worked to perfection. A generous amount of handmade chips accompanied this Appy. The four of us easily split this dish as we enjoyed our wine flight. They do have a limited menu and a hearty specials menu, emphasis on hearty. We ordered and split the Sabor Latin Plate special and I believe we finished about two-thirds of it. Check this out: an 18 oz Churrasco steak, salad, their special rice, 4 empanadas, and two smaller servings of ceviche. Of course, chimichurri accompanied the perfectly grilled steak. The homemade empanadas were just wonderful. We ordered one of each; veggie, chicken, beef, and shrimp. Others have mentioned that their wines are from the Mendoza region in Arg. If you are not familiar with Arg wines then order a flight. Their wines range from very good to excellent. Their Cab is perfect if you are eating beef. Their wine prices are more than reasonable if you order a flight or bottle. Service was 5 plus stars. Our server was very knowledgeable and greatly assisted us with our food and wine selection. We decided to give it a shot anyways because we had a reservation. We were in the mood to try out a new winery for dinner and were recommended to try El Gaucho. We were not disappointed. They have a lot of outdoor space and a smaller indoor seating area. I love the open fire grill setup. If it had been warmer, we would have sat outside. We shared both wine flights and we both enjoyed the sparkling the most. We ordered the shareable platter with sausage. I was not a fan of the texture of the blood sausage but my husband loved it. The other sausage, chimichurri, bread and cheese were excellent. We shared the sirloin for dinner and it was cooked perfectly to order and was the best sirloin we've had. The rosemary potatoes were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside. We also had the crepe dessert. So so good!! I am certain we'll be back! Great wine, everything else...ouch. I used to come here over the years prior and it was unparalleled quality. The chef was Argentine and made some of the best steaks I have had in my life. The appetizers were also excellent - empanadas, cheeses, blood sausage (it sounds strange but it was amazing)...very authentic experience considering we weren't in Argentina. However, the last time we went in March was a spectacular disappointment. Something must have changed, and not for the better. The steaks were tough and chewy, and no longer came with the potatoes they used to come with. There was no more cheese dip appetizer, instead replaced with chips and guacamole. Seriously? A Tex-Mex snack? It's now a Pan-Latin restaurant, and Pan-anything is generally a sign of deteriorating quality in food. This was a huge let-down after all the awesome evenings and meal I had here in the past. The wine selection is still very good, at least. It's worth a visit for that. Such a great winery near Lakeway Texas. It has Argentinian influences, and a great selection of wine. To start off with, you should get a reservation. You can call to make a reservation, which I recommend as tables fill up fast. They even have live music on Saturday nights starting at 6. The outdoor patio is spacious and gorgeous. We've given this place multiple chances, but the service has consistently been disappointing. On a past visit, we actually found hair in our food -- which should've been the final straw, but we decided to try again, hoping it was a one-off issue. This most recent time was the worst yet. We sat for ten minutes before anyone even acknowledged us, and after 20 minutes, we still hadn't been given menus or even water. Meanwhile, we could clearly see the only server attending to a table inside while the rest of us were left waiting outside with no explanation. It's frustrating to see such a lack of basic hospitality. We understand if a restaurant is short-staffed, but at the very least, communicate with your guests. This place is such a hidden gem in the Austin area. Genuinely the best value for steak (probably because if you live in the city you have to drive so far to get to it), plus incredible appetizers and wine! I always take friends here and they're blown away every time. Depending on when you go, they may also have live musicians playing while you eat. I've met the owners, musicians, and cook, and they're all fantastic people. The cook is Argentinian himself and the owners lived in Argentina for some time before moving back to Texas, but own a winery in Mendoza where the wine is grown. I can't say enough great things about this place, you just need to go for yourself and try it. I'd recommend making a reservation for an outdoor table and going about an hour before sunset. My secret hideaway. Don't drive up here in a low rider. Being in the wine industry I've had exposure to tons of wine and I love their Argentinian wines. I really like their white torrontes, it is not sweet and has great minerality at $30 a bottle. They are known for their Malbecs and they are all great. Tips: they had water and bug spray outside and a kids area with teepees. They have food onsite too - not just the generic charcuterie board but empanadas, steak cooked outside over fire, antipasto, and juice + pizza for the kids. They also offer authentic Argentine food that is DELICIOUS. The steaks and roasted vegetables are just amazing. Once you slowly drive up the rocky hill and trek (us in heels) on the rocky path without falling to the small indiscrete building, you'll enter a tiny restaurant. We didn't have reservations but luckily it wasn't busy. It is a tiny place so it's definitely not recommended for a large party to dine indoors. Now outdoors across the expansive lawn there's a patio with dining but it's 105 degrees so that's not happening. The kitchen is outdoors. They do sell cigars. We tried the wine flight, however the 2 wines we wanted to try they were out of stock. So we tried the Sauvignon blanc, a Malbec and a cab. The Malbec smelled like trash imo. I did not like it. The s blanc and the cab were ok. Food we shared the charcuterie board, the chicken and the portobello mushroom. The board was delish. The mushroom was good but tasted better with blue cheese. First time we went here it was pre-Covid. We were so excited to go back and unfortunately we were pretty disappointed. The vibe when we first went there was inviting, excited to show us around and talk about their wines and when we came back at this time it felt very different. Service: We were greeted by a lovely hostess, who told us she would be with us in just a moment. Then ,I assume, the owners came up to front. The gentleman asked us if his ladies had helped us yet and made sure they'd told us they'd be right with us, we told him yes. They asked where we were from and if we had ever been here before. We told them it had been years, pre-Covid. The woman refilled her wine, and asked if it was date night. I think it was a little offputting for me because if you own a business, and are on the clock or not, you help your staff out when they're busy. The owners could've offered to let us taste a wine that was sitting right there or offered to help us find a seat but instead we waited for the hostess to be able to come back while they got more drinks and went to sit back down. It was a really awkward interaction with the owners who just seem to be there to have a good time and make sure the hostesses/servers did their job but not step in to help. The hostess helped us find a seat, gave us menus, and was very accommodating. Another strange interaction with who I assume are the owners, the wife is up, taking social media videos with some of the customers, to promote their business telling them to be louder and sound more exciting because they're the vibe, definitely not what the vibe was at the actual winery. while servers and cooks were running around, trying to clear tables and serve people, It was really offputting to see the owners just making social media videos instead of actually helping customers out. They were quite a few tables needing to be cleared or waiting for water/wine, there were only two servers working from what I could tell. Anytime the kitchen slowed down, the cooks were out helping to clear tables but again for me it's really offputting to see owners just walk by drinking their wine, enjoying themselves when they could be supporting their servers on a busy night. We never had to wait too long, both servers helped out our table and other tables to ensure customers were satisfied. Overall, I would say the service of the servers was four-star, but because of the offputting vibe from of the owners, 3. Food and wine: the wine flights were decent wine, but I would say nothing special. We know we like the Malbec reserve but now it's way more expensive than it used to be! I understand with inflation, all companies have to increase their price but as hard-working teachers it's difficult for us to be able to afford a bottle of wine over $60. Wished that one was a part of the wine fight so we could've tasted it again. It's the bottle we bought last time but they don't include it in the flight. Would say the wine is not really worth it anymore. It's good, but it's more about the atmosphere than the wine. Make sure you have an SUV or a car that can get up some pretty steep and rocky gravel road ways tho! 4 star atmosphere! The owner making a social media videos right next to our table made it not a 5. Overall, for the price of everything, I was very disappointed. It's changed a lot over the last few years, and not really our vibe anymore. The wine and food are fine, but nothing exceptional especially when you look at the prices. The cooks and servers are absolutely phenomenal! Polite, timely, but I just can't get over the weird vibe from the owners who were obviously there to enjoy wine and promote their business through social media posts and that's it. The lack of support the owners gave anybody that was working made me not like them as much. And who knows, maybe tonight was their off night and they really were there just to enjoy themselves, but then they should be sitting like any other customer and not refilling their wine at the front or posting social media posts, it gives a really bad impression to customers that are there. I want owners who are helping out their staff and making sure their business is running as effectively as possible that is not the vibe these people gave off. If you haven't been turned on to this gem outside of Austin let me tell you this place is an absolute must. I understand the 45-60 minute drive from Austin proper might be a little intimidating but it's a beautiful route through hill county to end up at this beautiful restaurant and winery. I'll start with the wine. I had both the Malbec and the Cabernet Sauvignon and they were both solid. The Malbec had nice notes of plum and cherry and was a little on the drier side if that's your thing. The Cabernet was light and fruity with a superb touch of sweetness perfect for a summer evening. Now for the star of the show, the food. We started with the Tabilta de Campo which was a great variety but be aware it might run a little small and is best suited for two hungry eaters or maybe three normal appetites. The blood sausage is some of the best I've had in recent memory with a nice smooth and silky texture while the traditional Argentinian pork sausage packs the punch you expect and is as delicious as it is meaty. The provoleta cheese was a little on the sharper side but the accompanying chimichurri sauce pairs nicely. For dinner we had the bife de chorizo which if you aren't familiar is similar to your standard steakhouse steak. You have three options for sides being the salad, grilled vegetables, or rosemary potatoes. I personally recommend the rosemary potatoes for their soft texture, hard crunch, and grilled olives mixed in. The grilled vegetables were a nice and fresh spread with sweet potato, grilled onion, pepper, and squash. The best thing on the plate though is the steak. I ordered medium rare and it was cooked to my specifications with no issues but the crust of the steak is what will have me coming back. It comes with a nice char that follows to a mid section that will melt in your mouth. The far is also worth eating if that's your thing as I found plenty of flavor and no excessive chewing. The seasoning is lovely and the flaky salt added on top is a welcome bonus. Since this is a small operation the staff is super friendly and like family with everyone. The servers are kind and knowledgeable and it's not uncommon to see the owner walking around. The chef is also a very entertaining guy and well worth talking to if you get the chance. This place is definitely more of an experience rather than a straight restaurant but the food will leave you anything but disappointed. read more

Not a winery - the wine is from a variety of wine labels but all from Argentina. You can buy a 3 wine flight - but not a tasting experience. If you buy a full bottle - they place it on your table but do not even pour it for you! The wine - particularly the Malbec is good and priced well- especially if you compare it to the pricing on Vivino - they are only charging a few dollars above retail- which is nice. The food is good - nice charcuterie board - however many of the items on the menu are not available- or not as described. When asking to substitute - told by the very kind server "the cooks are from Argentina and get mad at me when customers want to substitute" - well that's a problem. Who is running the show- the back of house ? The servers were nice and had a great sense of humor - this was funny- there is a black and white little dog running around and he would hump people's legs! No one was upset but not something you see everyday in a restaurant. The outdoor patio as in desperate need of some TLC. Very run down - chairs with cushions are so dusty - they need to be cleaned or thrown out. Perhaps they are intending a rustic look, but rustic can also be clean and organized. The driveway up to the location is all dirt- which is fine, however, you practically need a 4 Wheel Drive!!! Is very very bumpy - also, ladies, wear flat shoes. The parking area is very rocky and has slippery soil and is not lit at night. Would be super easy to get your heel, caught or fall down. When we first arrived here, it was a bit confusing on where we were allowed to park as there were to signs indicating a designated place for cars - we ended up just driving all the way up the hill and parking alongside the roundabout next to the entrance of the winery cabin. We had a reservation for right when they opened, and luckily so - it became extremely busy later on in our visit, so be mindful if you're planning on coming here that it's popular! Staff is extremely friendly and attentive - they accommodated our group and let us even switch some tables around since we were the first there. El Gaucho has a smaller wine list than other wineries I've been to, but they also had a food menu that was unique to others. Provoleta ($12.50, +prosciutto $2.00): Comes out on a hot skillet plate with some slices of bread on the side. Really flavorful in provolone, obviously, but the chimichurri gives a nice addition to the dish. Felt like the addition of prosciutto wasn't worth, however. Empanadas (2pc - $12.50): They have an option between beef empanadas, or a black bean and plantain empanada. I tried both and they were delicious in their own ways. Some people may stray away from the non-meat option, but I quite liked it! I believe they served this with the same chimichurri that was on top of the Provoleta. Light Flight 1. Chardonnay: Their description is 100% correct, if you don't prefer Chardonnay, you might change your mind after trying this! Super light and refreshing, really easy finish. 2. Chardonnay Reserve: Huge jump from the Chardonnay - seemed to taste more full. 3. Malbec Rose: Really great end to tie the first two together, the sweetness is subtle but still noticeable. They have a lovely outdoor courtyard/backyard patio where more seating is available, but unfortunately the day we went, it had just rained meaning most chairs were wet. We got their at 3 and stayed for a few hours because of how it was nested in the hills with plenty of trees and shade. Great place for a date, family, kids, dogs or a glass of wine for the day.
