Our Spicewood experience was fabulous! We arrived just after they opened for the night. There was plenty of seating and the service was great! The cocktails (fresh margaritas) were spot on. The menu had great options and the food was delicious. The prices are reasonable. It may not look like much from the curb, but the inside is beautiful- there is a nice add on and patio overlooks a nice small range. Our server confirmed that they host weddings and events. We were able to relax and finish our drinks by the fireplace (gas). It all made for a nice out as we passing through to Big Bend National Park. read more

After reading some reviews, I figured I'd give this place a try. I give this restaurant two stars, the first star is for the physical appearance of the restaurant, it is very nice inside with great views. The second star is for the mediocrity of the chicken fried steak. It wasn't bad however, there wasn't anything spectacular about it, not to mention the steak was pink towards the center. The lack of additional stars is due to customer service, customer service and the taste of sides. Spice wood could definitely use some trainings and seasonings within these areas. read more

the bartender was busy but still polite then owner came to help and wasn't as pleasant- she had a caddy remarks and wasn't professional. Our used dishes weren't not picked up. The hostess here was a little B. Rude and smug because we arrived at 430 when the sign says it opened. She was talking trash on us to other employees. She was asked why and stated because no one ever shows up at 430. We told her maybe you should change the time to 6 than. Never gave this place a chance and now never will. We have been customers of this place since the present owners took over a few years ago. I love the fact that they have stayed open throughout this virus epidemic in order to serve the locals and hotel guests. Masks thankfully are not mandated (or forbidden either). Not being a smokey meat lover I have avoided their brisket and ordered their wedge salad, mac n cheese, etc. The other day we stopped in for lunch and I thought I would order the brisket sandwich. What a dreamy sandwich - I totally found my new favorite sandwich. The brisket was thick cut, juicy and moist. Not overpowered by any smoke flavor and served on a toasted bun. Pure heaven! I first visited Spicewood shortly after they first opened. The food was okay but was way overpriced. I visited again this week and I'm happy to say that they have found a winning combination. The food was excellent, the service was great, and the price was a good deal for the high quality of the food. I highly recommend the Green Chili Cheeseburger. Doesn't look like much from the outside.....big metal building....but there were cars in the parking lot. Inside it's a whole different story. We were there on a Thursday around 1pm and apparently "just missed the rush". Wasnt crowded at all. Went back on Friday night and we actually had to walk out because we had a function to get to so didn't have time to wait. Unfortunately, we were not aware Spicewood was no longer a Bar-B-Que restaurant. So very disappointed to find a menu with not many choices, and higher than food quality prices. Seating server raised eyebrows that we did not have reservations, though there are signs posted that reservations were only required for parties of 8 plus and we were 5. Our food order was totally messed up. And later I realized that the person (not our server) that came and apologized for the mix up was there within seconds of us pointing out the first obvious mistake. Color us impressed! We were very impressed with the restaurant itself, as well as the food. My children and I had that cheeseburger and fries. This is one of the best burgers I have had in a very long time! It actually had some taste and seasoning. The french fries on the other hand, were overcooked and dried out. But the burger was so good I didn't care! My sister got the 6 ounce chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, and country gravy. She too said it was one of the best chicken fried steaks she'd had in a long while. It was a lot of breading but the breading was very good and the steak underneath was very good. She had a Chilton to drink and while it was nothing extra it was good. I had the Muscato which was also good. My sister said the green beans were very fresh and good. They have a bar but we were with our kids so didn't go in there. Outside there were fireplaces and it looked very nice but it was a very cold evening. The waiting staff were very attentive and our food came out quickly. While the restaurant wasn't going to be in any architectural digest, it was very nice for the area. I'm not happy with this place me and my wife went there for valentines. I called to make reservation and they told me that it was walk in only. So we showed up hour and half before they closed. They told us it would be 45 min wait so we put our name on list. Then I asked them why there was empty tables and he told me they were reserved a week ago. After waiting a hour they came out and told us and everyone waiting before us that they wasn't taking anymore customers and made us leave. By then everything else in town was closed. read more

I am a server so i know how hard it can be. but this was pretty ridiculous. we asked for a drink menu, which of course means we will probably want to order a drink in a couple minutes. our server didnt check on us for another 10 minutes which lead us to not being able to buy a drink because we didnt want to have to chug it down with our meal. their menu was the smallest menu ive ever seen. which, im sure is because of Covid, but it was still very disappointing seeing there was so much more on the menu online. also no one was wearing a mask? not one employee.? the food was good but if we ever eat from there again, we will be ordering togo to avoid the service. read more

While in Alpine, we stayed at the Quart Circle 7 Hotel and Spa which had an on-site restaurant. We looked up the reviews of this place and it didn't have the best reviews so we were originally not going to eat here. Due to COVID, most restaurants in town were closed, so to avoid eating at Sonic, we chose to suck it up and try Spicewood. WE ARE SO HAPPY WE DID!!! It looks as if the restaurant has undergone renovation and it is beautiful with an amazing patio that has a great view of twin peaks. The wine selection was good (we were surprised to find they had The Prisoner wines at only a small markup so we enjoyed a bottle) as well as craft cocktails that looked delicious although we did not partake. We started with the jalapeño popper dip, shared a New York Strip, and added several sides to include Brussels sprouts, hand cut fries and macaroni and cheese. The portions were way bigger than we imagined and everything tasted delicious! The macaroni was a pleasant surprise as there was a slight kick that I believe may have been poblano. I cannot say enough about how good EVERYTHING we ate ended up being! Our waitress, Isabella, was super sweet and it was mentioned this was her first night on her own. The restaurant was packed (again, I'm assuming because no other restaurant in town was open) and she struggled to keep up with refilling our water, but no biggie! My boyfriend gave her a few tips to help her in her journey as a waitress and she was very polite and receptive to what he had to say. Keep up the good work Isabella, it was a very busy night, and she kept up for the most part! If we're ever back that way, we will definitely eat here again. read more
