The bartender was so much fun, didn't get his name but he was so pleasant and chatty, tall, dark haired and handsome especially when he put his sophisticated sunglasses on! Worst service ever and the food was just meh. My previous review was removed so I'm back leaving another one. When I sat down at the bar it was an unacceptable amount of time before my drink and food order was taken and I had to sit with dirty glasses in front of me before a floor server took them. The bartender was too busy chit chatting and singing to some other patrons. Then he grabbed someone's baby and walked all over the place with it. The bartender was just plain awful. A little bit of a weird layout in that they have 2 bars....one in the lobby area of the hotel, and another in the main dining room. Not sure why it is that way since there is only a partial wall dividing the lobby bar from the dining bar, so it was a little confusing. Anyway, got there a little early and had drinks in the lobby bar. They were excellent! I had the Old Fashioned and my wife had an espresso martini. When the restaurant opened, we grabbed a table and ordered the Fried Shrimp Appetizer and a Prosciutto Margherita Pizza. They were both very good. Our server was a school teacher by day, and a server by night. Very nice and gave us some ideas of things to do. It's a loooong way from home, but I will definitely go back at some point, soon. read more

Then we waited and waited for our drinks...one drink at a time (2 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine). We ordered appetizers to share and requested small plates and forks (in our experience, this is a normal thing!). The server brought utensils but no small plates. Is this a matter of bad training? No training? Or just apathy toward customers? The bartender wasn't much better (very slow and inattentive). The bar atmosphere was fine; clean, nice art and decor. But after having drinks and trying a couple dishes (which were fine), we decided not to order dinner here. We had a much better dining experience down the street at Margaret's. We came back for breakfast and was disappointed to not see the waffles on the menu that were pictured on their website. So went with the Marfa breakfast: 2 eggs, meat, hash browns, and sourdough toast with butter and strawberry preserves. I didn't not leave a bite of food on my plate. Not many places in Marfa were open around lunch time. We ventured here and sat in a bar like area. Our waitress came over quickly and gave us menus and waters. After having just walked out of a bad experience at our first stop in town just a few blocks away, our Marfa visit was teetering on getting off to a bad start. Elena at the Bar St. George put an immediate stop to that slide. Quick and friendly service, excellent drinks (and pub trail mix!), and a cool & classy vibe quickly put us in a better frame of mind about the small West Texas burg. Elena is an excellent ambassador not just for the establishment, but for Marfa as well. This is an excellent bar to hit on a warm, sunny spring break afternoon. Couple of visits when visiting the area. Honestly, hard to find a lunch spot in Marfa even during a holiday weekend. Hot spots like Stellina and others don't even open till I'm already in my personal cocktail hours. If your looking for brick and mortar you get a Dairy Queen and the Bar Saint George. Well, the DQ would be ALOT cheaper. Lunch on the first day with the wife was $128 with tip. Two drinks each along with a beer battered shrimp plate and some sides. First problem were my fries. Not exactly top notch and luke warm. Amazing buttermilk dipping sauce! Batter on the shrimp was inconsistent too. Sides were black eyed peas with kale and bacon, smashed potato skillet, and crispy brussel sprouts. Biggest complaint from me was the lack of actual sprouts; mostly leaves which had a good flavor. However, if your paying a premium to dine at such a lavish establishment it could have been better. We ordered both desserts that day too. Excellent key lime pie with various supremed citrus and whipped cream. Next, the creme brulee macarons with champagne gelee, raspberry, and pasionfruit curd. Key lime pie was the clear winner. I'm thinking that this place is trying to one up themselves at every turn and it's not working for them. Next day I returned to Marfa with my mom for lunch selecting the crab cake for our appetizer. This dish was bordering on terrible. Quite possibly the driest one I've ever had. Slaw was the only acceptable part of the dish. Mom ended up trying the shrimp dish I had the day before; same cold fries. Fries on my dish (burger) were better. I still failed to see despite the upcharge "tag" words like wagyu and tillamook that this was better than the burgers in my home town. Service was attentive as it could get with only one or two staffers helping in the bar. Mom received here wine after the crab cake only because I demanded she get it. Got my own S&P! read more
