The food was different than your standard Mexican offering and overall very good, good seasoning and portions. Pricing was not out of what would be expected for quality Mexican food. To begin with, my party was greeted by a poorly delivered and off putting joke about making sure she served us lots of alcohol; delivered in a way that in Spanish is known as "ser llevado" or overly familiar. When she did happen to pass by our table again, I politely asked for additional plates and silverware, when she had a chance, to which she replied that I could pick them up myself from near the register area. Her response seemed out place since we were dining in and we were under the impression that she was our waitress, so I asked her again for silverware, not plastic utensils. Again, she told me that I could pick up plastic utensils myself from the register, pointing, "see they're right there" and walked away to the kitchen. We were still processing the exchange, a bit in disbelief, when she then appeared with requested silverware and additional plates but visibly annoyed and in some kind of hurry. It was really hard to focus on enjoying our meal after that. The waitress then made her way to the back table to sit next to, one could now only presume was her boyfriend, and we never saw her again. She never checked on us, asked if we needed anything, etc. Her priority was staying seated and chatting it up with that guy. Who did come to check on us was the owner, who seems to have cooked the meals and walked out of the kitchen to speak with us. He asked if we had enjoyed the food, if it was our first time there, talked about how he sourced his ingredients, shared some of the restaurant's history. Then he walked away to continue working. Unfortunately, we were forced to engage again with the waitress (who remained seated at the back table) and had to ask her across the restaurant where we should pay. Before she answered from her chair (didn't even get up to speak with us and was getting ready to yell back at us from her seat) the owner appeared at the register and told us we could pay with him. But this regional delicacy is the focal point of the menu at Tacos de Cabrito y Machito El Lagunero. Francisco Salinas operates this San Bernardino pop-up within the inner lot of the neighborhood Good Choice Tires shop. Here, the informal menu is simple: pick either cabrito or machito (offal wrapped in chitterlings), then a style of cooking. The blue-and-orange paint is peeling on the tire shop that El Lagunero calls home. Enter into the gated back lot to find a convoy of EZ-Ups shading the dining space. Salinas tends the grill within the open-air kitchen setup, while his wife bounces between tables. The pop-up tables are lined with green-checkered tablecloths and clear plastic liners. Spanish-language radio blasts from an adjacent pickup truck. My partner and I took a detour through the little town of Muscoy on the way home from Big Bear, and we arrived at El Lagunero in the late morning. We opted for a combination plate of both meats, as well as a small consome. The meat and broth were divided between two large styrofoam bowls, while tortillas and fixings were served in ceramic ramikens on the side. The bone-in cabrito was a juicy, tender revelation, far surpassing most goat birria available in SoCal. Meanwhile, the gamey machito sported a wide range of textures from chewy to crumbly -- it may be too offal-y for the unprepared. Finally, the thin consome was incredibly flavorful without over-relying on either oil or salt. Of the sides, we mostly stuck with the tangy salsa verde, but the extra-spicy salsa roja was worth an occasional dot as well. Even with our limited Spanish, the hosts were patient and welcoming. Our bill worked out to just $20 -- a refreshing rarity compared to the often overpriced and underwhelming LA taco game. El Lagunero's hours are limited, and the location is far out of the way for many a Southern Californian. But a devoted weekend warrior with a wicked taco craving won't regret the trek to El Lagunero.

I put in my order and found a seat at the set up tables under a tented area. I soon was having some convo and getting to know some fellow patrons. As for my order, I probably was a little too excited and ordered way too much food, but I had leftovers that lasted me through dinner. I ordered: two tacos and a quesabirria, which also came with a cup of consome. I also ordered a taco with some of the offal, which was tasty, but niche and I probably wouldn't order it on my next visit (I was glad to try it and it is loved by many, but I'm more of a straight up meat kind of person). The flavors were wonderful and the meat was cooked perfectly. The salsas and accoutrements were all of high quality, fresh ingredients. I love lots of lemon/citrus on my tacos and the lemons here were juicy! After paying and on my way out, I saw that they were making some flautas on the griddle. At that point I was beyond stuffed, but it looked so darn good. I definitely have to order those next time. Just a great spot that have great folks and great food at a reasonable cost.
