It's not "just" a wine shop--change out the p for a w, and it can be a show! Many wines and liquors and liqueurs to ask about. And stools and chairs and window sears on which to sit at tables and a small bar. Recently pressed by my friends to drop by for happy hour (not usually my thing), I have discovered a much needed alternative to the usual tired, old bar scene ("familiarity breeds contempt" goes the admittedly old, tired saying!). But I digress. Anyhow, you see some new faces and old--and some loud people to jolt you out of your revery (if you "like" that kind of thing). Again, I am losing track--oh yes, I asked for a red blend (turned out to be of Greek origin) and the bartender gave me a freebie as there was not enough to me top off--the glass, I mean. Really cool spot I like the concept of a wine & spirits store that moonlights as a bar. Service was excellent and The live dj on a Friday night gave it a very lively experience. A few months ago, I called in asking for a bottle of pisco and luckily, they had some in stock. The owner was nice enough to put it aside for me so when I arrived, it was already waiting behind the counter. Really appreciated this level of service since I was in a rush to get to my dinner reservations! Although you aren't allowed to buy a bottle of wine to enjoy outside on their glorious patio, it is a nice to spot to hang for a glass (or two). They even have themed nights with specialty cocktails. The inside bar is small and usually a bit busy but there are other larger tables inside, too. On a recent visit, their wine by the glass menu included several whites, several reds, several bubbly options, and even a handful of oranges. They were nice enough to allow me to try a couple whites before I landed on one I liked for a full pour. Glasses ranged from $8 to $15 so prices are pretty standard for the area. read more

I found Mt. Vernon Spirits by mistake as I thought it looked like a bookstore before I was close enough to read the facade. My partner and I checked it out and it's since been a favorite location to grab a nice bottle of wine and usually a quick drink. While not a bookstore, it still has that same cozy vibe. There are tables and seating set up within the store and a set of dog chess in case you're in the mood for a game. Everyone I've met at this establishment is friendly and helpful. The bartender's rendering of the drink menu is excellent and they've gotten creative with off menu drinks as well. I was surprised to find them open on Thanksgiving and stopped in for a glass of wine with my guests and a couple of bottles for dinner. I haven't purchased any wine at Spirits of Mt. Vernon, but I did meet a friend here after work one day for some wine. In addition to being a small but well-stocked wine store, they also serve as a wine bar. However, their choices if you just want a glass or two of wine are very limited (when I was there, they offered one white and one red option by the glass). What is great about them is that you can drink any bottle you purchase inside. So it's a fun place for a drink if you want a whole bottle, but less great if you just want a glass or two. I wish they had a few more open bottles for people who just want a drink or two, but the service is great (even though they can get very busy)! When I walked in I was inspired by the wood shelves and beautiful display of spirits to try something different! The guy behind the register was very helpful in suggesting wines I would like based on other wines I've drank before.. He also went the extra mile of helping me find something that was already chilled since I was headed right to a friends. Next time I'm anywhere in the area I will be sure to pop in for one of their wine tasting, to thank them for the wonderful wine they helped me pick out or just to pick up another bottle of something new! If I had to say one bad thing it would be the parking.. Paying for parking in order to run in the store for 10 minutes suck, but it's not their fault. read more

I've been in this shop a handful of times over the years. Lived in the neighborhood for around 12 years. As a woman of color, it is very hard to get someone in this shop to greet, help or acknowledge me. I pay attention and I watch other young people get assistance right away. I'm 6' tall so I know I am seen. I've come in during quiet times and during busy times and my experience is exactly the same. I often remember that my last visit has been exactly this when it happens again. They could do better to at least acknowledge all patrons, particularly new patrons, even if they cannot get to them right away. Especially in the wine business, it can be easy to look like you only acknowledge those who spend hundreds of dollars at your location. Those in the neighborhood (who are all colors) and could become your regulars would like to know that you appreciate us too. read more

The beer is relegated to the back of the store...Like a second class citizen. It's ok though as they have a limited number of nice choices...more locals than not. Vernon has started a wine tasting every Friday night and it is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the place. No doubt you will be made to feel welcome. As a white patron, I was treated significantly different than other members of my group who are black. Let me paint the picture for you on what "treated differently" looked like so you can make an informed decision as whether or not you support this establishment. Black man: Drink poured and instead of being given the drink, told he can collect the drink at the cash register and bartender walks the drink directly to the cash register. Black woman: Drink poured and told she can collect her drink at the cash register. Again, drink is walked directly to the register. White woman (Me): Drink poured and smiling bartender hands over the drink. Black man: Drink poured and told he can collect the drink at the register. Drink walked to the cash register. White woman: Drink poured and smiling bartender hands over the drink. As this occurred, we all were exchanging confused glances. However, there is absolutely no way one can deny what was occurring. I outline this scenario to give you a clear visual. I did not pay for my drink upon receipt, neither did the other white woman. We all paid at the cash register. The two white women were "permitted" to walk with drink in hand. The three black patrons were required to collect their drink ONLY after having paid. As a white woman, I know no matter how aware I am of my own whiteness and what that means and how often I challenge my own privileges, I still have blind spots. However, the way that the bartender responded when the concern was raised in a very professional, private, courteous way that black and white patrons were being treated differently was unacceptable and beyond simply having a "blind spot." It was blatant. She responded in a defensive, angry, aggressive, accusatory manner. The blame was shifted to my black friends who were suddenly in it for some "end game" (her words) and the experience (and facts) were completely dismissed. I will not support this establishment. read more

This place is great if you are white. But if you are a black person do not come here if you want to be treated with respect. I came to Spirits with a group of friends (our group was half white and half black.) The way the white patrons were treated in my group was notably different than the way the black patrons in the group were treated by one of the staff. This was noticed by all members in the group. I brought this up to the attention of the owner of the establishment who seemed to be sorry about my experience and assured me that the situation could not have been what I thought it was. I took her at face value and went to another venue with my friends. At this venue, this SAME staff member who had treated us poorly, happened to be at the venue and kicked the back of my leg when she thought I wasn't looking. Shortly after, this same staff member and a friend unrelated to the incident confronted me in an aggressive manner using profane language in retaliation for making a complaint about the treatment we received. Crazy, right?? I used to have a high opinion of Spirits and I am a lover of wine. But unfortunately, if you are a black person I would recommend that you don't come here. You may get treated with less dignity and be gaslighted by the staff for simply trying to address your concerns. And who needs that? You're better off buying a bottle of wine from Mount Vernon supermarket across the street if you just want a bottle to go or if you want to sit and enjoy the glass of wine I would recommend Mount Vernon Market Place or the 2nd floor of The Elephant. read more
